This place is great! Been here about 3 times and the fish quality has been consistently great as well as at an affordable price point. The chawanmushi is a tasty steam egg with shrimp and crab. The Hokkaido sea urchin nigiri has been my favorite and they sell out usually end of week. The restaurant is small and is usually busy during peak lunch or dinner hours, better to make a reservation or get there right when they open. Service is great despite having only 2-3 workers. I have been wanting to try Mujiri for a while after learning about their affordable nigiri combo! I scheduled a pick-up for two nigiri combos and one sashimi combo. As of now, Mujiri is takeout only but the space is kind of small, so not sure if dine-in will be an option in the future. We waited about 10 minutes after coming in at our scheduled pick-up time. I received a text notifying me when my order was complete so maybe I will plan better next time. I was certainly not disappointed of the fish quality and the ingredients used. Everything was fresh which was impressive considering the price point ($25). However the only complaint I had was the variety of fish we received for the nigiri combo. Although I did not make my own selection, the chef's choice seemed limited compared to what was received for the sashimi combo. Quality sushi with fish delivered straight from Japan! Had my birthday dinner at home with takeout from Mujiri and every piece was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Got two nigiri combos, a sashimi combo, spicy tuna and sake roll, sides of sushi rice, and cheesecakes for dessert. The nigiri combos consisted of seven different pieces of assorted nigiri and a six piece maki roll. All of which were the chef's choice of fish and were listed on the order receipt. I loved the variety each box had to offer and I especially loved that there was toro in each one. The sashimi combo was equally as delicious. Each piece was so good and unique from each other. The scallop, salmon, and toro were a slightly sweet and had that melt-in-your-moth texture. The sushi rice was seasoned and fragrant with a sweet soy and rice vinegar. Lastly were the cheesecake slices. The matcha was rich in matcha flavor without being overly earthy or sweet. The texture was a bit crumbly but nonetheless enjoyable! The yuzu cheesecake was my favorite of the two. It's tartness paired deliciously with the moist cake. read more

Came here on a Saturday night and was able to be seated right away. Fish was pretty good for the east bay but the server was so rude that it really ruined the whole experience for me. When I go and spend over $150 for 2 people I expect the server to at least act like they want to be there. Take out maybe in the future, but I wouldn't come back for dine in again unless they get some better servers. It was also super awkward because they stand there while you input the tip. Can we just go back to paper and pen for tipping without the server hovering? Or they can leave the device there so you can tip in peace? read more

I first tried Mujiri at the Oakland location with friends and was blown away that I was super ecstatic they opened one in Hayward closer to me! They were take out only for awhile but now they have dine in as of mid-November! There's a parking lot across the street where you can park to dine; and the restaurant is small but cozy and has bar seating. It took a little while for our food to come out when we dined in, but I think it's because the Presentation is spectacular, even for the takeout! And you can preorder a week in advance for a pick up time. I love the nigiri set ($25) and you can choose your fish or upgrade too. It's great to take away for a picnic and I've taken it to the Hayward Japanese gardens nearby for lunch! The sashimi set is also great ($35) but I kinda like having a bit of rice with my fish so you can also order a side of rice. The spicy salmon roll is also EXCELLENT and a favorite of mine. For a splurge, try the uni. Their sake sampler we tried in Oakland was great as well! Overall, this is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area now. Super fresh fish that melts in your mouth and totally worth it!! I came here on a reservation as this restaurant is incredibly small. There are only 2 tables that can hold a group of 4 each, maybe 2-3 tables that can seat 2 people, and a couple seats at the chefs counter. I heard the server quote a wait time of 1.5 hours to a group who had come in without a reservation looking for a table of 4, so make sure you make a reservation! After ordering, it takes quite a long time for the chefs to make your sushi, I think we waited around 30 minutes? But that's because everything was cut and made fresh. Make sure you have good company to chat with or else the wait will bore you! For a group of 3, we got 2 nigiri combos, 1 sashimi combo, 1 spicy salmon maki roll, 1 negi hama hosomaki roll. 1. Nigiri combo - 8/10. This was a great value for for only $25! You can pick 7 nigiris as well as a chef's choice maki roll. I really enjoyed the Kanpachi, Kurodai, and Ika because they torched the top for some smokey flavor. Our maki roll of the day was the salmon & shiso hosomaki which had a hint of perilla leaf flavor! For the amount paid, it was definitely worth it! 2. Spicy salmon maki roll - 9/10. This isn't your standard spicy salmon roll where they mince the salmon with some spice. These are strips of whole salmon so you really get to taste the meaty parts of the salmon. It was my favorite dish of the night! 3. Negi hama hosomaki roll - 6/10. We all didn't think much of it. It was pretty bland and I thought that the rice in the roll overpowered the fish. It is a pretty light fish in the first place, so you won't be able to taste it much. Ughhhhhhhhhhh. I only ate this and Chipotle yesterday and it's most likely not the Chipotle because I've been eating there multiple times per week for years...but I have the WORST stomach ache right now due to probably a bad piece of fish from here. I woke up at 3 am to go diarrhea and went multiple times (sorry for the TMI) throughout today...and I have a really bad stomachache right now. I guess everyone has an off day, but I will not be returning. In addition, out of the 7 pieces of fish, I only enjoyed the toro, scallop, and arctic char...because these were the only fish I could taste. I couldn't taste the tuna, amberjack, salmon, and even surprisingly the hamachi which usually has a really strong taste. I couldn't really taste the vinegar of the rice either. The pieces of the fish are also SO small. I don't think $27.69 is worth it for 3 good pieces of fish and a bout with diarrhea. =( read more

This is definitely the best, freshest sushi in the Hayward, Union City, Fremont area. It's always good. Back in December I ordered pick up for later and when I arrived they were closing and forgot to set my order aside. They were very apologetic and of course refunded my money. Daniel, who I believe is a chef or a manager gave me his name for the future. Due to the holidays and what not I never followed up. I ordered some pick up for dinner tonight and when I went in the server greeted me and let me know they still wanted to fulfill my previous order on the house and that they would comp my current order. My wife and I took a trip to Hayward to pick up some desserts and needed to kill some time before our pick-up time. I gave my wife a couple of options of walkable restaurants and she chose Mujiri. It is a very small place. At first, we were a bit confused as the counter staff told us to sit anywhere and then paid us no attention for a time. We looked over the menu (accessible via QR code at the table) before someone finally walked over to our table. Our waiter/server gave us our water and promptly took our order. We got a seaweed salad appetizer, a couple of salmon rolls, a side of rice, one nigiri combo, a couple inari, and one ume-based roll. The salad itself was pretty small and not super satisfying. Honestly, considering the lack of veggies in any of the other offerings, I can't imagine skipping the salad the next time we visit. Our main courses were all excellent and filling (especially with the side of rice we sprung for as well). I must say that the ume-based roll was definitely not as good as the salmon one. Service was good and prompt following the initial delay. Music was playing pretty loudly in the background but not so loud as to disturb our ability to converse. Overall, while it was certainly pricier than our typical sushi places, the food quality and experience of Mujiri were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Mujiri and look forward to returning at some point. read more

I'm a fan! Definitely some of the best quality sushi you can get Hayward. If you're into well made sushi rice and high quality seafood, this is for you. If you enjoy your sushi strictly with lots of different toppings and sauces, or flaming in a piece of aluminum foil - this isn't that. Both have their place, so align your expectations.
