Stumbled upon this place because I was looking for matcha nearby me and this place popped up and decided to give it a try! Customer service was nice, nothing out of the ordinary. The business itself was quite small inside. They had the sushi and all, packed up in the front ready to purchase. I ordered the banana creme matcha and also their inari pockets. The banana creme matcha was alright, just a little bit too sugary sweet to my liking . I like the containers they put the drink in! Very unique and unheard of. The inari pockets stole the show. They were amazing. First time having inari pockets and I want to go back just for that alone! Overall I give this business a solid 4/5 review. Will definitely be back for the inari pockets for sure! I want to try the other sushi they had to order! But unfortunately they were sold out of majority of items.

Take out and take away sushi with a full tea bar menu! My coworker and I were stoked to try Obento. It's so funny cuz they're literally across the street from Mujiri. I've had Mujiri and Ebiko and I gotta say that the portions at Obento are very generous. Although you're paying $20+ for each dish, whether it's a salmon don or nigiri box, you will get high quality pieces of fish leaving you perfectly full. We shared a nigiri deluxe and salmon don and it was perfect for the two of us for lunch. Whatever sauce that truffle flavor was was SO freaking good. The roe nigiri was way too salty, I would skip that. And the tamago was alright. The cuts of toro, yellowtail and salmon were fire. So tender and melted in my mouth. I wish there were other options not just california rolls, like katsu or something. But they do have a little snack area for Japanese chips and a refrigerator for green teas and the like. Staff is friendly and quick. And we love a small humble but clean interior. The matcha menu looks so good. And actually a matcha for $6 is wild in this overpriced economy. Finally got to try this place that's been on my list. It's in downtown Hayward with a parking lot in the back and street parking. It's fairly small but has a wide selection of fresh sushi and matcha. They open at 11 but I arrived around 11:30 on a weekday and they were already sold out of most things.. Although I picked a few bento boxes to try and got the strawberry matcha. The salmon aburi bento was my husband's and my favorite out of all. The fish is so fresh and the matcha was delicious (with real strawberry puree). I would go back! But maybe right when they open or call ahead to order.
If you can go early, the better choices you will have. We arrived around 4ish and we picked up the last couple of boxes. It sells out really quickly. They also sell matcha drinks and put it in a can! The omakase is fresh and the rice is yummy. The selection of nigiri in each box is great. It's a grab and go place so no chairs. Banana flavor was really prominent with not much of the matcha flavor standing out. It was really fun to see the girl at the counter make my drink and the cup is cute! The service is great and efficient :) i've had their chirashi bowl before and it was good. Would love to try the nigiri box next and maybe just a regular matcha latte!

There are shelves offering snacks, a refrigerated area offering sushi rolls and nigiri combinations, chirashi bowls, seaweed salad and Japanese pickles. And the lady owner/ cashier will make drinks that would be bottled in a plastic clear cans and secured with a cap. We bought 2 boxes of sushi and ordered strawberry matcha lattes. The sushi tasted fresh, and the drinks are average, would need more strawberry purée. It seems they make the boxes as the day progressed, there was a trolley of freshly made sushi boxes wheeled out ready to be put on display as we were leaving. There is a parking lot leading to the store, and street parking in front of the store.
Second visit to Obento and I came back specifically to try one of their new menu additions. I was excited to see that they've added matcha beverages to the menu. I'm happy to say their sushi continues to impress. The staff was super cool. Everything tasted fresh, well-prepared, and beautifully presented. It's always a good sign when a spot can keep the quality consistent from one visit to the next. I appreciate when a place adds new options like specialty drinks without losing what made me come back in the first place. My matcha was definitely worth another visit.
We wanted to grab something for dinner and we were around the Hayward downtown area so we stopped by obento. Not too many choices were left in their case, we were there around 4pm on a Saturday. We grab a couple boxes, a $25 box, $20 box and a couple others. Totally fresh and flavorful. Definitely go back if we are in the area.

I was really excited to try this spot, but it was unfortunately a major disappointment. This is a grab-and-go place where you pick up pre-made items from a fridge. I went around 5 PM, and I actually found a bone in one of my nigiri pieces. On top of that, several of the pieces had a distinct sour taste like they had gone bad, so I couldn't finish the meal. I was especially looking forward to the salmon, but most of the fish was heavily oversalted--likely from sitting in the fridge for too long after being prepared. The portions were quite small, and given the poor quality, safety hazard, and lack of freshness, it definitely wasn't worth the price. read more

We got the deluxe box which was pretty decent! Unagi was kind of rubberish.. I actually enjoyed more of the salmon & toro! Super fresh. I'd want to come back to try more esp the salmon aburi read more

We visited right at opening and were very impressed by the quality of the fish. It was so fresh! Price is very reasonable for quality! The rice was a bit hard, but definitely willing to look past it. Will be visiting again! read more

There's a parking lot behind the nearby adult store, kinda packed and cramped though. It's a humble restaurant, items are made to order if you don't see it. Employee was welcoming and nice. Food was as reasonably fresh. read more
Its so great that Hayward offers freshly made sushi for grab-n-go! I popped in and picked up inari filled with rice and toppings. So GOOD. I also got a pack of salmon nigiri. I really enjoyed both items and would return again. Shop is tiny and service was friendly. Lots of parking but watch out for the homeless and bums. Some do get aggressive if provoked. read more
Obento opened 4 weeks where The Cupcake Shoppe was. Just grab n. Go. No seating inside nor out. Offerings: Japanese drinks/snacks. Nigiri, Sashimi sets. The fridge unit changed to a smaller one since the larger one is being repaired. Posted prices for nigiri/sashimi has been reduced. One can either grab n. Go from fridge or ordered from sheet on table if desired item isn't in fridge. Bites: Chirashi (20): tuna, yellowtail, salmon, unagi, red real crab, edamame, pickled radish. -wasabi wasn't visible in mix. Smear probably faint. Fresh ginger, shoyu available in mini packets. -counting Ikura salmon roe was 11 items sashimi. Radish, edamame, & especially black tobiko was tasty. -very large sashimi pieces, 2X normal size. -tuna wasn't noticed, 1 piece salmon sweet tasty, 1big tuna piece flava neutral. Big unagi piece tender, juicy & sweet -red real crab fresh, yellowtail was semi-flavorful. Sushi rice was nicely nuanced vinegared. 3.5 stars: semi-worthy-YMMV. Quantity: reasonable Quality : Inconsistent. Smaller pieces better to avoid possible choking issues. Street parking is difficult at peak times. Unknown of travel issues. Ate it ASAP. read more

This place is 5/5 for me. People might think it's expensive but the deluxe nigiri has cavier. It's a grab and go so ambiance is nil but service is great! I will grab and go lunch once a week going forward . read more

Popped in here to grab some sushi bento boxes because we were nearby and wanted to try it after seeing a video on social media. The store is small and cute, they have a variety of bento boxes to choose from as well as snacks and drinks to purchase. We got two sushi bento boxes, one of salmon nigiri and maki and another of sashimi variety. Both were so delicious, the fish was super fresh - the salmon melted in my mouth with every bite. I love the pickled veggies on the side to supplement the sushi. Service was great too! They gave us a little snack to try for free after we already paid and as we were leaving. There's also a parking lot right around the corner making it easy to come here. read more

My daughter picked up lunch for us here yesterday. The quality of the food was better than most grab and go sushi. The rice was well seasoned and the fish was fresh I think the quality for the price was pretty decent. My daughter said the exchange with the staff was good. The lady that helped her was nice and the shop was setup nicely with snacks for sale as well. read more

Small, little shop in downtown Hayward. They recently opened a month ago and inside was relatively empty. They had a few shelves with Asian snacks, canned drinks, and mini fridge for their sushi boxes. You can also order up on the counter but the price wasn't bad! I ordered Salmon Aburi Bento and California Roll. Came out to 30$ total. California roll had real crab mixed with imitation and avocado. Bento had 5 pieces of salmon, 2 hamachi maki, 2 salmon maki, and 2 avocado maki. Rice for the nirigi was alot for me but it was delicious. I hope they fill up the store more though. read more
Visited Obento while in the area and it was such a cute grab and go sushi spot! The shop is pretty small, but they had a good selection of nigiri boxes ranging from about $20-$25 each. The staff member helping us was very friendly, and it wasn't too busy when we stopped by over the weekend. They also serve matcha, which was solid as well. Overall, I'd recommend it if you're looking for something quick, easy, and satisfying. read more

Obento came to me as a Yelp recommendation and I thought the concept was very similar to Ebiko in Piedmont and Hokkaido Sashimi Marketplace in Castro Valley. It's set up as takeout only, but they also have a made-to-order drink menu, which makes them a tad different from the other two places I've mentioned. My partner and I were both interested in trying this as our Friday post-work week dinner treat! We placed an order the morning of to ensure that they didn't run out of the specific items we wanted to try. I'm glad we did too because I went to pick up our order around 4-4:30PM and their fridge selection was pretty empty by then. Between my partner and I, we shared the box of Pickled Eggplant and an order of Salmon Aburi. He opted for Nigiri Box as his main dish and I got the Omakase Bento. I didn't linger at the shop for too long, but from what I glimpsed, their fridge isn't as big as Ebiko's or Hokkaido Sashimi Marketplace, but they seem to have a wider range of Asian snacks and some drinks that are chilled and ready to drink as well. Honestly, we were blown away by the quality of sushi we got! Going in, I think we didn't have too high of an expectation, but was just very curious about how it compares to Ebiko. Ebiko is our top takeout sushi place, buuuuut I have to say that Obento is right on par with it, so now we have two top options! The Salmon Aburi was absolutely delicious. I think the slices is just a tad thicker, which is great - better mouth-feel. It's very lightly charred, but charred enough that you get a good hint of that charred flavor. The salmon pieces just totally melts in your mouth. Our second indication of a good takeout sushi place is their Unagi. We're pretty picky about it because we had great Unagi in Japan and Ebiko's Unagi is also one of our favorite Nigiri there. But we were also blown away by how good Obento's Unagi is!! We didn't get the full order, but each of our main boxes already had one each. They glazed the Unagi with just the right amount of sauce so it's neither too saucy or dry. It was absolutely delicious. Other pieces that stood out in each of our orders was the Ika Nigiri (slightly charred as well), the Hotate (sooo fresh), and the Chu-Toro (melts in your mouth)! I love that even though they're takeout only, they made each of the pieces quite pretty! Each of my Nigiri pieces was topped with something a little different. Rice and fish ratio is also perfect. The pickled eggplant was delicious too, but I think it's a bit too tangy to eat with sushi since the taste of sushi is so delicate. I think it'll go well with freshly cooked rice though! All in all, amazing takeout experience here. We're excited because Obento is closer to us than Ebiko, so we will absolutely be back here for sure. I have to say that their sushi quality rivals that of dine-in restaurants and dare I say, even beats some? Yep! The only con I see is parking. There are parking lots around, but some public parking lots are very narrow and squishy. You might do better parking more towards the residential areas. But on the flip side, it's supposedly also very close to Bart! read more

This is the perfect place to grab and go when you're in the mood for good sushi or need a quick, easy meal. They also have a wide variety of snacks and drinks to choose from. The place is very tiny and no tables to dine at, so definitely a take away spot. Service good too and the young lady working the counter suggested some good recommendations. There is a back parking lot too so you don't have to worry about finding street parking. Fresh and ready-to-eat inari and nigiri tucked in downtown Hayward!!! I went during Saturday lunch time and it was so quick and easy. The items are displayed on the right side to grab and check out. It's pretty small so they have no dining tables but it didn't matter to me since I was going home. They also have matcha drinks you can order to go along with your meal but I didn't get it this time. I got a sake nigiri box and 3 set inari to share with my bf. The sake nigiri was pretty good, I would say it is a 4/5. The 3 set inari was random so look carefully to make sure you grab the ones with fish you liked. Mine had one spicy creamy scallop, one with salmon and avocado, and one with imitation crab like a California roll. My favorite inari was the scallop as it was soooooo fresh, creamy, and not rubbery at all. The other two was pretty good too but the scallop one is def one to remember for awhile. I think the inari set ($13) was worth it but the nigiri set was a bit pricey ($19). read more

Cute small grab and go sushi market. There's a small refrigerated section where you can easily choose what you want. The fish was pretty fresh and I really enjoyed the aburi. Would for sures come back. Can't stop thinking about that salmon lol. read more
Grab and go spot. Prices are very reasonable. Fish is extremely fresh. The guy at the register is super nice. Came in looking for the 3 piece yubu set one day and they ran out. I mentioned that's what I was looking for and he proceeded to step into the back and make it immediately. I come here on my "treat yourself" days. Stopped by for some sushi, the main fridge was being repaired, so offerings were a bit on the slim side. Got the Omakase Nigiri, omakase Bento, Spicy salmon roll, and what I though was the Spicy tuna roll. The omakase nigiri is a decent offering. Sushi was pretty fresh. My favorite will have to be the Omakase Bento, the garlic or yuzu toppings really help the nigiri. The roll which I thought was a spicy tuna roll was super salty and it did not look like spicy tuna, so honestly, I can't tell you what fish it was. Place is smallish and really grab to go. Great for the convenience factor. The owner was super friendly, free parking around the corner and that allowed me to visit other establishment in the area. read more
