The ayce menu is a bit limited compared to their regular offerings. The rolls I ordered were nothing special, they make them pretty big , so be prepared.Nigiri was pretty good , would recommend the salmon belly and escolar. Fish quality was high. I have passed by this place a few times and wanted to try it out. I ordered Hokkaido roll and negihama maki togo and it was ready in 15-20mins. I walked in and they directed me to the to go counter and gave me my order while the restaurant seemed to be filling up for those eating in. I wasn't expecting this to be amazing, it was mid. Hokkaido roll didn't taste like much besides spicy mayo since it overpowered everything and the negihama maki was ok had too much rice. The restaurant appeared to be very clean and bright. We were charged extra for unfinished pieces, after we told them we'd eat it. I've never got charged for extra unfinished food and even more so after finishing it. We realize that all you can eat doesn't have that much option. You're better off getting off the actual menu and do à la carte. The food all tasted all the same to us. I don't know if it's the sauce or just the stuffing that was inside.. We were kind of eating and they told us that they can bring us to Bill. They brought us the Bill and ended up charging us more for some pieces that was left over. We told them that we were gonna finish it and they need to take it off. They said OK and they came back with a receipt. It was not taken off. I called her over and asked hey you guys still charged us.. Stopped by here while I was in the area. Quality is consistent as I go to the South San Jose location too. I gotta say, it is definitely one of the best sushi spots in the area. The restaurant is very spacious and the service was pretty quick. The tables looked like it used to be a hotpot restaurant before Kakuna opened. We got some appetizer and then the entree. Chicken Teriyaki (4.7/5): The quantity of this dish is probably enough for two meals if I'm being honest. The sauce isn't too watery or thick and it is not your average sweet teriyaki place. he chicken is a bit smokey and taste great! The rice is on the mushier side, but that is my preference in rice. California Roll (3.7/5): It is your average California roll. However, I think that they put too much avocado over the imitation crab so it taste like I'm eating mostly avocado. I think that they could also make it with a bit less rice too as it does overpower the filling. Spicy tuna roll (4/5): It was pretty good. I think that it had a nice kick to the tuna. The filling was actually a good amount in the middle. I think even though I stopped eating this maki, it still taste pretty good to me. Takoyaki (4.2/5): I find the takoyaki to be pretty delicious. The outside was crispy with a nice soft middle. It came with two sauces on top with the tobiko flakes. One downside to me is that the suace is really heavy and creamy. I went to Kakuna Sushi after seeing it online and hearing they had all you can eat. First off, the all you can eat is a lie; it's only three rounds, and it doesn't say that anywhere in the directions. The restaurant was also a bit slow. They took our order and brought the food to the table, but they messed up a few times--either bringing the wrong items or forgetting to bring some. I noticed this happened to the table next to us too. The customer service wasn't great either. Our server would bring things with a shrug and just slide them on the table without telling us what they were. Plus, they didn't check in on us much. Since we had to ask the servers for help several times, I couldn't tell if they were short-staffed, but the restaurant wasn't packed. The food quality was okay. A lot of the dishes were covered in sauce, so you couldn't really taste the quality of the fish (even the oysters had sauce). Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Kakuna might be some of the best AYCE sushi I've had in a while. Came with a group of 5 on a Sunday night and it wasn't busy. The menu is extensive. You can either order individual rolls and dishes or do AYCE. We opted for AYCE and had no idea what we were in for. You know how when you go to AYCE sushi and they sometimes give you smaller portions of their rolls etc because there's 3 rounds? Yeah that's not the case here. Their rolls are HUGE and delicious. We made the mistake of ordering way too much round 1 because we thought they would give smaller portions and were left with tons of sushi left. Like most AYCE, they charge for left over food so we paid an extra $40 on top of the regular charge. Not their fault, they even warned us that left overs would be charged. We just had no idea how much food it was going to be. It's ok though we got to take the rest home and had lunch for the next day. That's being said the sushi is fresh, the udon was flavorful and the spicy chicken don was high quality. If you're wanting AYCE this is a solid choice, but honestly recommend just getting 2 rolls as it's cheaper and you'll get FULL with the size. We went with the all-you-can-eat option and tried a bunch from the specials, including the Lion King roll and the Boujee roll. My favorites were definitely the oysters and the Boujee roll. They were fresh, delicious, and gone way too fast. Some of the other dishes didn't hit the mark for me. A few of the fish had a strong "fishy" taste that I didn't enjoy. They seemed to try to balance it with lemon and sugar, but it wasn't really my thing. The Lion King roll is baked and takes about 15 minutes to come out. It was warm on top but cold on the bottom, and the heavy sauce made it a little mushy, which threw off the texture. The staff, on the other hand, was amazing. This place is really clean and has a nice back area for seating. The waiters were friendly and gave great recommendations, which I appreciated. As for the food, they do all you can eat in rounds just like many other sushi or Korean BBQ spots, but the portions here are full size. I'm used to smaller tasting portions for AYCE, but these were full rolls. We actually had to cancel a few items because there was no way we were going to finish everything. The appetizers were just okay, nothing to really rave about, but every roll we tried was really good. The surprise star of the meal was the chicken soup. It was honestly the best I have ever had, and I am not a soup, ramen, or pho person at all. Have been here a few times since it's opened, especially a couple years ago when they first had their cheaper grand opening prices. My husband and I saw recently that they started an all you can eat option, so of course we had to try. We came during lunch on a Saturday around 1pm, got the premium AYCE for $48. Usually, "regular AYCE" is as cheap as $38 during lunch on WEEKDAYS only, so if budget is an issue, you can always try that! My husband and I both tend to like nigiris over rolls (which we feel is the bigger bang for our buck), so we will probably always choose the premium option if we return. You get 90 mins to eat, which is plenty enough time. Pros: - honestly, very high quality fish for the mid-tier sushi restaurant that this is (not super fancy or expensive, but also not trash). The nigiris were all very buttery and tender, and the oysters tasted fresh. - Some of the rolls you can order with 4 pcs, which is very helpful to not get full too quickly - Pretty fast service once the orders get going, and very easy ordering system on the paper with pen - Fun millennial top hits from 2000s playing in the restaurant - All the fish tasted really fresh, wide variety of things to choose from if you happen to be going with people who don't like raw fish Cons: - the rolls on the menu aren't listed in alphabetical order, so it can be pretty difficult to find the descriptions of the rolls if you haven't been here before - have to pay for parking in this area now unfortunately - but if you aren't in a rush, I recommend parking in the residential area nearby and just taking a short walk over. - The rolls that come in 8 pcs are HUGE - which would be great if you're not doing AYCE. This was our first time visiting this restaurant. We had heard quite a few negative reviews beforehand, but since we had never been there ourselves, we decided to give it a try and form our own honest opinion. The pricing is relatively high compared to many other all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi spots. At $47.95 for the premium option, the expectation is much higher--especially because at that same price range, you could dine at a Wagyu AYCE restaurant and enjoy much better quality and value. This sushi restaurant, however, doesn't offer Wagyu at all, which already makes the price feel unjustified. On top of that, only the premium menu allows you to order nigiri (2-piece sushi). If you don't choose premium, you won't have access to nigiri at all, which is a major limitation for a sushi AYCE experience. Beyond that, the restaurant places strict limits on ordering. You can only order 2 rolls and 5 orders of nigiri per person per round, with a maximum of 3 rounds per table. Even appetizers, while advertised as unlimited, are also limited to 3 rounds. Because of these restrictions, it honestly doesn't feel like a true AYCE experience. The menu setup is also very confusing and time-consuming. The AYCE menu itself does not include descriptions of the rolls, so you're forced to look at the regular menu to understand the ingredients. However, not all items on the regular menu are included in the AYCE menu. This means you might spend a lot of time going through the regular menu, finally find something you want to try, and then realize--after cross-checking--that it's not available for AYCE. The only way to navigate this is to review the regular menu first to understand the rolls, then go back to the AYCE menu to see if you can actually order them. It's inconvenient and frustrating. To make matters worse, they charge an additional $1.50 per leftover piece, and they take it seriously. From our experience, it felt like the restaurant relies heavily on rice and sauces to fill you up. We ordered a "mini" beef don, expecting a small portion, but it came in a large bowl filled mostly with rice and only a small amount of beef and scallions. The sushi rolls were also oversized and heavily sauced, making it easy to get full quickly--but not in a satisfying way. As for the fish quality, it was inconsistent. Some items, like the hamachi, tuna, and unagi, were quite good. However, the salmon and albacore tasted very frozen and lacked flavor. There was also no tamago sushi available, which was disappointing. One of the biggest issues was cleanliness and hygiene. We noticed staff spraying cleaning solution directly onto tables while customers were still dining nearby. Given how close the seating is, the spray could easily drift onto food, which is concerning. The strong smell throughout the restaurant seems to come from this cleaning spray, making the dining environment unpleasant. From a health standpoint, this practice feels inappropriate and unsafe. Overall, regardless of a few decent items, we would not return. Between the high pricing (without matching value), the premium-only nigiri restriction, the strict ordering limits, confusing menu system, inconsistent food quality, and hygiene concerns, the experience was disappointing. In our opinion, this is not a true AYCE restaurant, and we would not recommend it. read more

I came here based on a Yelp review, and overall, I have mixed feelings about the experience. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean. The tables were comfortable, and while I didn't use the restroom, my friend did and said it was clean--so that's a plus. Now, what I didn't like: The food presentation was pretty underwhelming. Everything looked like it was just thrown on the plate with no attention to detail. You can see what I mean in the photos I posted. It didn't match how good the food actually tasted. Another issue was our waiter didn't speak English at all, so I wasn't able to ask any questions or get recommendations--which made ordering a little frustrating. Also, they served everything with plastic utensils (knife, fork, spoon, and chopsticks), which felt really tacky for a dine-in experience, especially given how nice the space itself was. Bad customer service. I walked in with my husband and kids, 6 months pregnant and excited to try this new place. We arrived at 8:18 PM, and their posted closing time is 9 PM. As soon as we walked in, the waiter made a face and started speaking to the cashier. She then came over and told us we had until 8:25 PM to place our order. We sat down and tried to scan the menu quickly, but we felt rushed and unwelcome. My husband told the server that if the kitchen closes earlier, they should update their posted hours. She didn't seem happy about the comment and said the last order is always at 8:25 PM. This felt very unprofessional and unwelcoming, especially when the restaurant clearly states it closes at 9 PM. Decided to try out the new Kakuna Sushi for dinner with my parents. It's always a bit of a gamble trying a new restaurant in this particular spot, as we've seen so many come and go. However, our experience at Kakuna Sushi left a positive impression, and I'm optimistic about their future here. We saw a post on IG about this place and it looked amazing. Since we were already in the mood for sushi we decided to go. I cannot eat rice, and I am not a huge fan of seaweed, but I will tolerate it, so just for peace of mind I called a head to ask if the chefs could make a cucumber wrapped roll without rice, most places I regular, can and will do it. There is an up-charge, but thats okay I will pay it. But this place does not. We get there and I already have my mind set on the spare ribs bento box. However, my dining partner asked knowing my conditions and what I cannot have, so she asked about the "special way" I need my rolls. I didn't know she was going to ask, but we instantly got the "No"; that's okay I already knew. Then one of the servers rolled her eyes and in annoyance said "ugh, I'll ask". I went from "it's okay" to "ready to punch a lion king roll" in an instant. Soooo, unnecessary! Anyway, we proceed to order with our actual server and my dining partner ordered her rolls and I ordered my bento box. When her first roll comes it barely has any rice on it. They automatically did it that way because of what we asked about the no rice on my roll if I ordered one, but FOR ME not her. My bento box come about 5 mins later and I was offered extra salad because of my no rice issue, and my salad was swimming in dressing (mayo). No biggie, I just won't eat it. Wasteful, I know. She orders her second roll and the server say "easy rice right" and we both say "NO, why?" Oh because you wanted no rice... again my irritation returns. And I didn't bother explaining again. Each time we said thank you we got zero response. Each time we asked for something, we got an eye roll. It wasn't until we were leaving we got a polite goodbye. So I have mixed emotions about this place, my wife may be back but I will not. Dining is not just about the food, It's about the experience. And mine was not the greatest. Note to management, some people have medical conditions that prevent them from being able to enjoy a meal that way it should be, and that's not their fault. We came here to try the AYCE sushi and had high hopes for this place because of the reviews, but was ultimately let down. It's "AYCE" but they give you a paper that says otherwise. There was a strange smell and the longer we stayed, the more the smell got stronger. The girl who served us was trying her best, but don't expect service to be fast because it seemed like she was the only one serving. This place gives excellent portions for their chirashi bowls! I got the regular chirashi bowl and it was absolutely filled to the brim with nothing but fish and rice, my favorite combo ever. First off, the fish, large chunks/slices sitting on top of a mound of white rice. The fish was nice and soft, not tough at all compared to a few places that I've tried previously and tasted super fresh. Every single piece paired perfectly with the sushi rice. When I say that it was a mound of white rice, it was a MOUNTAIN! The bowl was filled and I couldn't get enough of it. The rice was nice and sticky, with hints of vinegar. I love Kakuna, I come here every now and then. The presentation is amazing, and the food always hits the spot. Sometimes the waiters are caught up but the food is so good it makes up for it. A cute little spot in San Leandro. Usually it's not crowded which I enjoy. I always get the chicken katsu and I love their take on it. It has a different spice blend with a good zing to it. I really enjoy coming here. I don't plan to stop. Also the Toro is so so good. read more
