Definition of hole-in-the-wall good! My younger brother loves sushi and decided to treat me on a random Thursday. I could not say no, so off we went to Kansai Hayward. There are only about 4 tables in there and they do mostly to-go, but we were able to get the table in the back by the bathroom. Not a great start, but I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Bento Combination box with Teriyaki Beef and California roll. This comes with miso soup, rice, and salad. The beef was tender and really well seasoned. I was really surprised at how good it was--everyone at the table tried it and loved it. The california roll and everything else was really well seasoned. I loved the Miso soup so much I had mine and my kid's soup. My brother got the Katie 2 and Wendy Roll. The Katie 2 was the star of the show. That thing was the size of his arm, and not the small part lol. It was HUGE and DELICIOUS. I did not order rolls cause I thought it would not fill me up. If I had just ordered that one, I would still leave stuffed. The Wendy roll was normal size but packed with flavor as well. I loved the crunch on the outside and the creamyness of the inside. Went here on a weekend night and surprisingly no one was in there when we first got there. I ordered a tekka maki roll and the special roll katie 2 and my friend ordered a philadelphia roll. I just felt like the rice was way too gummy and tasted like mush. Maybe it was just like an off day or maybe they just cooked it for a little bit too long or added too much water, but it was not good. I had to take the rolls home. So I could at least like fry up the rice. So that way it was better texture. The workers they were very nice but unfortunately, the rice itself, we'll be the reason why I wouldn't come back. It's also a very small place and pretty dimly lit.So I can see it being more of like a romantic date spot for someone. I noticed I thought they mostly had online orders rather than in person customers. Overall, I don't think I would come back. But I will say the Katie roll 2 was something else. We have been to the Oakland restaurant many times and love the food, service and interior. So, when we heard of this location, we just had to come in. The overall building and interior is extremely different from the other store, as this one is super small with tight seating (maybe 8-10 tables?) and it's clear the food pickup and delivery is the biggest draw here. And, here is why.... The food is awesome! In fact, I want to say it is better here than the other location. We came in for Bento dinners, and were very impressed. You get a ton of food, and that food is really tasty. Me and my siblings were craving sushi we decided to try some place new. The inside is on the smaller side but we went here on a Monday so it wasn't that busy. Everyone was friendly the waitress brought us plenty of water after we ordered chicken karage Avo-kappa roll, Philly roll, kansai roll, hot and spicy, and lastly the John roll. Found this place by accident. I ordered online to pick up at a different sushi place with a similar name. I paid through a food app so I was committed. I took the 10 minute extra drive and it was well worth it. This is my new sushi spot. My rolls were fresh well portion and simply delicious. I was able to finish my leftovers for lunch the next day and I can never eat day old sushi, but it was still delicious the next day. This restaurant is small , cozy, cute date spot. Went to Kansai last night for dinner. This is a really small place. Our table was right next to the cashier so the workers were next to us the whole dinner. Also, there was an unpleasant smell of the restaurant-- not very pleasing when you're trying to eat. On the other hand, the food was good! Ordered a salmon teriyaki bento with mixed tempura and chicken teriyaki bento box with fried gyoza. I would prefer more salmon in the salmon bento because the slices were a little thin. There was plenty of chicken in the chicken teriyaki bento. We also got the kansai roll that was very flavorful and filling. The portions were large and we definitely left full. I would eat the food again, but not dine here. Parking is available at a free public parking garage close by. read more

The deep fried ca was really good and the lion king was ok. I've had the lion king from here before but this time it was a lil overcooked. As far as the other two, which have eel, they tasted good but were full of bones. I eat three different pieces and had a total of five bones. I threw the rest away and wasted money which kinda made me upset. I just can't eat sushi with bones in it. The Udon was good. I didn't really care for the yakisoba but I did eat it all. We frequent this spot often because the kiddos love the children's meal- they get gyoza& teriyaki chicken - everything they want. SO and I get to try different rolls and often opt for the sweet surrender. It's a big roll and delicious! Each bite of the fish melted in my mouth. I am absolutely obsessed with the sashimi here. The chicken teriyaki was also incredible. Came here tonight with a friend as Hayward is halfway between us in Walnut Creek and San Mateo. Although tonight was our first time at Kansai's Hayward location, I have previously ordered from Kansai's Concord location via DoorDash. I'm not super familiar with Hayward but when Kansai came up on my Yelp feed, I remembered how much I liked the sushi at the Concord location. We came around 5 pm and were seated immediately. I had the rainbow roll and the salmon maki, both of which were super tasty. My friend got the James and CA rolls, which she liked. Service was friendly and we liked the candy that came with the bill. The space is small but don't let that discourage you from trying Kansai! FYI, the bathroom is hidden underneath the curtain. When I asked, they pointed to the kitchen door and I thought the bathroom required walking through the kitchen. Luckily the one of the chefs redirected me to the bathroom. The area where the curtain was seemed tight so I thought I was in the wrong place. Better signage would be helpful so people don't make the same mistake as I did. Owner likely changed recently, don't bother with Kansai anymore. I've been doordashing from here for over five years and have dined in a couple times too. Sushi was the best in the area and service was always excellent. They recently changed up the menu: $1-2 increase on everything, many items removed, some weird Chinese-Japanese "fusion" items added that I won't bother trying. In my latest order of my usual rolls, everything was wrong from very hard and lukewarm rice to their soggy and chewy seaweed that wouldn't come apart and wasn't fully cut between pieces. Their once delicious sushi is now just wet slop thrown together and rolled up with some sauce drizzles on top. They even cheapened out on the boxes which are annoyingly difficult to open. read more

I ordered through grubhub on a Sunday afternoon. It was on time. Place looked clean, polite staff. Got my order and left. I tried their Baked mussels, Oakland roll, and the CA hand roll. Mussels were delish! Soft and creamy. Not fishy at all. The crunch of the fish eggs was welcoming. The Okland roll had shrimp tempura, imitation crab, avocado and fish eggs. It was delicious! The calamari appetizer we ordered tastes like cardboard, sushi rolls was drenched in sauce, and the sashimi on the chirashi bowls were still frozen and the majority mushy quality.
