First sushi outing since moving to the neighborhood. Multiple familiar names coming from the Oakland/Berkeley area, so decided to go with Kansai. Not many tables here, but for sat right away. Menu is pretty standard, ordered veggie tempura appetizer, a roll, sushi nigiri combo, and some drinks. Everything was quick, and fresh, but the rolls and the nigiri were both pretty heavy on the rice. Tempura was a little overdone for my liking too, but nothing was bad. Overall not a bad experience, but for a ~$90 sushi outing, I need it to hit, and with a handful of other sushi spots in the immediate area, I can't say I'm committed to this one in any way. read more

I've been going to Kansai for take out sushi for a few years now and they are always quick and consistently accurate with their orders. I think their rolls are okay but nothing spectacular. This place is an easy "go to" for me because of the convenience of location and the consistent decent quality of ingredients. I would not say this place if my favorite but it's a place I can always count on filling my sushi need. I hadn't visited this place for a long time, and it's still an excellent restaurant with great value for money. The dining area is a bit small, but it doesn't take away from the quality service. I ordered the combo bento, and the teriyaki beef was absolutely delicious. The fish cake was neither dry nor greasy, and the tuna sashimi was cut into generous portions and tasted incredibly fresh. Kansai will always be some of my favorite sushi. I have been to all their locations at this point and they all share the same standards: good quality sushi, big portions and good service. Their miso soup is so comforting, i can't help but go 'mmmm' after my first sip. Their salmon and tuna is always fresh, I over order to take some home for lunch the next day. My fiance loves the chicken teriyaki roll since he's allergic to seafood. Definition of hole-in-the-wall good! My younger brother loves sushi and decided to treat me on a random Thursday. I could not say no, so off we went to Kansai Hayward. There are only about 4 tables in there and they do mostly to-go, but we were able to get the table in the back by the bathroom. This comes with miso soup, rice, and salad. The beef was tender and really well seasoned. I was really surprised at how good it was--everyone at the table tried it and loved it. The california roll and everything else was really well seasoned. I loved the Miso soup so much I had mine and my kid's soup. My brother got the Katie 2 and Wendy Roll. The Katie 2 was the star of the show. That thing was the size of his arm, and not the small part lol. It was HUGE and DELICIOUS. I did not order rolls cause I thought it would not fill me up. If I had just ordered that one, I would still leave stuffed. The Wendy roll was normal size but packed with flavor as well. I loved the crunch on the outside and the creamyness of the inside. Went here on a weekend night and surprisingly no one was in there when we first got there. I ordered a tekka maki roll and the special roll katie 2 and my friend ordered a philadelphia roll. I just felt like the rice was way too gummy and tasted like mush. Maybe it was just like an off day or maybe they just cooked it for a little bit too long or added too much water, but it was not good. I had to take the rolls home. So I could at least like fry up the rice. So that way it was better texture. The workers they were very nice but unfortunately, the rice itself, we'll be the reason why I wouldn't come back. I took the 10 minute extra drive and it was well worth it. This is my new sushi spot. My rolls were fresh well portion and simply delicious. Went to Kansai last night for dinner. This is a really small place. Our table was right next to the cashier so the workers were next to us the whole dinner. Also, there was an unpleasant smell of the restaurant-- not very pleasing when you're trying to eat. On the other hand, the food was good! Ordered a salmon teriyaki bento with mixed tempura and chicken teriyaki bento box with fried gyoza. I would prefer more salmon in the salmon bento because the slices were a little thin. There was plenty of chicken in the chicken teriyaki bento. We also got the kansai roll that was very flavorful and filling. The portions were large and we definitely left full. We frequent this spot often because the kiddos love the children's meal- they get gyoza& teriyaki chicken - everything they want.
