The ambiance is a bunch of diner-type tables that need a little more cleaning up. The food itself is just okay. Although the prices are lower for Japanese food, it also reflects the quality and portion. For example, we were surprised that my partner's salmon dish was so small. He had to order more protein to add on to the dish. My partner did like his sushi roll but felt the way I did about my sushi roll: too much rice and it didn't stick together much so it fell apart. The veggie rolls were creative though and although I have the same complaint about there being too much rice, I still thought that it was nice to have the option of vegetable tempura rolls. I've tried most of the Japanese spots around here and had skipped this one for a while because of the reviews, but finally gave it a shot. Prices are definitely on the cheaper side, so that's a plus. That said, a couple things stood out right away, the outside of the place looked a bit rough and not the cleanest, which didn't give the best first impression. Food wise, it was just okay. I ordered the shin ramen with tempura shrimp. The broth itself was decent, but the egg kind of fell apart and had more of that egg drop soup texture, which was a little odd. The shrimp tempura also didn't seem very fresh, the batter was different than what you'd expect and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. Overall, I'd say it works if you're just looking for a quick, inexpensive fix, but I wouldn't come in expecting anything super authentic or high quality. You kind of get what you pay for here. The staff on the phone were friendly. You should always have them repeat your order, especially if it's a large order. They didn't enter my order correctly and it was only the first two items I said. Pick up only took 20 minutes like promised. Well packaged and provided enough utensils. Rolls - All of us agreed that while the portions are big the rice was not good. Everything fell apart once you pick it up and there's no vinegar taste to it. We ordered this to go and although the sushi roll combinations were unique the rice was just too much per roll. The sushi was drenched in sauce and everything tasted like a California roll with spicy mayo. I also got a chirashi and the fish cuts were giant. The fish quality was very sad and not glossy. The fish is very dull and looks thawed out. Some of the cuts broke apart like it's been sitting out too long. The miso soup was interesting it had random pieces of noodles in it. Not sure if that was how they made miso soup or some other dish fell into the soup broth. I'm glad I gave it a try but will definitely not be returning. read more

Fat Fish Sushi is one of my favorite spots for sushi. My go-to rolls are the Golden Gate, Aloha Roll, and the Chicken Teriyaki Roll. They're all so good and always come in great portion sizes. I also love their spam musubi and the egg rolls, which come with an amazing dipping sauce. The food is very affordable for sushi, and the customer service has always been good. The menu is quite lengthy. It is posted on the wall, and you order before you sit. So, it's a little awkward standing there as a first time customer, starting at this menu with something like 80 different rolls + other menu items. For some reason I decided today was the day to be adventurous. I ordered an aloha roll and a Godzilla roll. First I will say, of you order the Godzilla roll; you can probably share it. Or at least don't order anything else for yourself. That roll is huge. Because of its extremely large size, it was difficult to eat. But it was pretty decent. The aloha roll, I would not recommend. Cream cheese and spam? Why did I think that would be a good idea. Hard pass on that one. The restroom could use a bit of a deep cleaning. Or maybe it's beyond that and just needs a straight up face lift. Anyway. I will probably return, try something a little more normal next time. Or maybe not sushi because the udon looked good too. Interior: interior is fairly small, once it gets to the busy hours, it does get crowded. It is outdated however, is cute. I prefer sharing it so I don't get overwhelmed eating it cause of the richness from the Lion King. I have been going to this restaurant from time to time ever since it opened, and each time the main chef has turned over, the quality of food has declined. Recently I took a friend there expecting a decent meal and regretted it. Sushi at Safeway would have been better. The "California Roll" was a very salty faux crab salad rolled up inside rice and seaweed. Said roll was sliced randomly, I had a 1.5" slice, a 1/2" slice, and two diagonal-ish slices, my companion had different sizes of slices as well. I ordered 3 pieces of sushi and one was quite wide, drapping over both sides of the rice, one was the width of the rice and the third was longer than the others. The lack of uniformity in preparation is concerning because thats one of the hallmarks of a trained chef. Also characteristic of Japanese cousine. I ordered the grilled salmon, and it was overcooked and dry. The tuna on the sushi smelled fishy and was chewy - not feel like fresh, sashimi quality fish. We both had salads, however mine was mostly the white stalk, not the green leaf - my companion had more lettuce leaves in hers. There was no care or pride in how the meal appeared or tasted, which says a lot about how they feel about their customers. On the positive side, it is great they are now open Sundays, there is new technology that allows you to order at the table, and the service is warm and friendly. If only the food was fresher and prepared more mindfully, I could see myself returning here. Makes me sad, I live in the neighborhood and appreciate having sushi nearby and have always had positive interactions with the owner. I hope they find a professional sushi chef to run the kitchen to provide the quality control needed to serve fresh and properly prepared food, in which case I will return. read more

I went here on a Monday night, and the place was empty. We were looking at the menu because we hadn't been there for a while. They have a lot of options for your sushi needs. The cashier had a little attitude because we took too long to order. We felt like we were being rushed, but nobody was behind or in the whole restaurant at all, so I did not see the need to rush us. We got the Lion King, lobster roll, poke salad, and miso soups. The miso soups were delicious. The Lion King and lobster roll were delicious as well. If you like baked sushi, I recommend these! For the poke salad, these are delicious, but I remember the serving used to be way bigger. When we got this, we were surprised how small it got, and for $8! Honestly, I wouldn't get it again because it wasn't worth $8 for such a small portion. The place has booths and tables so you can eat alone or with a large group. This place would have gotten 4 out of 5 stars, but it's getting a three due to the service we received. read more

Ok, I rarely give a poor review but...don't know what happened but not the same! I have been eating at Fatfish for years. I have been at the location when the building was an old Taco Bell, but something happened. Not the place I love. First they have table ordering but no one knew how to use then little machine. Because I have allergies, I need to customize my food. The little machine did not show you how. The food was subpar and the cost was higher. I was so sad. The owner used to sit by the front door and would greet you, making you feel welcomed. Hopefully over time it will get better but for right now, it's a no for me! There were no up to grades to the dining area, but not the place, I hope overtime it will get better. read more

Fat Fish Sushi is along a busy street, so it may be inconvenient to get to/leave from. There is a small parking lot though, so at least you do not have to try to find parking. I do not come here often because I prefer quality over quantity, but sometimes I want to give them another chance to prove me wrong, since it is more affordable than every other sushi spot. I ordered a couple of my usuals on my last visit - a salmon roll and an order of salmon nigiri. The salmon roll smelled and tasted fishy, and when I tasted it, it was fishy and slimy. The salmon nigiri was more rice than salmon, so the rice masked more of the fishiness taste. read more

I definitely had much better ones. Volcano: This looked good in pictures, but it was so spicy! (I would say that I can't handle spicy that well, so maybe I should've known by the name "Volcano"). I have been a long time patron of Fat Fish & for the price, it is a reasonable place to eat. Unfortunately, my to go order was wrong & had to make another trip. Always check your items before you leave. We had to drive back to have them re-make the food & there wasn't any apology or compensation for the trouble. I was a little disappointed about their customer service. As far as food goes, I always get the Dragon Roll (eel), Tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken & avocado roll. Dragon Roll-contains fresh ingredients, avocado, masago, unagi, tempera shrimp was the only ingredient that wasn't as fresh & probably frozen. I love the sweet teriyaki sauce on the unagi & the slight crunchiness from the tempera, that's why this is my go to at Fat Fish. Bento Boxes- Tonkatsu & teriyaki chicken with soup & salad. Tonkatsu was crispy, but didn't have much flavor without the sauce. The teriyaki was nicely grilled & a regular favorite. For the price, Fat Fish can't be beat. read more

Most of the chicken pieces were so hard that I was not able to bite them. Was not close to the picture that is on their website.The roll was so so. The salad was very fresh and so was the rice. A slice of orange came with it and it was refreshing but not sweet at all. My partner order two rolls.The tuna was not fresh and the color was pale, dull, and old. The tempura was soggy and the seaweed wrap tasted stale. The Fat Fish in Pleasanton is the place to go. We were very disappointed.
