Kapow Thai Eatery has quickly become one of my favorite Thai spots in the East Bay! My fiancé and I had such a great experience--from the friendly service to the incredible food. Some of our favorites were the Wings of Kapow, which were perfectly crispy with a sweet and spicy glaze, the crispy garlic pork belly, and the Crying Tiger sirloin steak, which was tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the dipping sauce. We also couldn't leave without ordering the mango sticky rice, and it was the perfect way to end the meal. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were generous, and you can tell a lot of care goes into each dish. The staff was welcoming and attentive throughout our visit, making the experience even better. Food was good. The crying tiger sirloin steak was a little more charred than I had preferred but the meat was very tender. The scallop zap is refreshing. For the chicken wings they cut them in half so each piece is half a wing which makes it easier to eat. Service was good and they were very nice. Kapow is our favorite Thai place in the area. Every dish we've had here so far has been a hit and their drinks are also good. We've dined in 4 times now and have enjoyed it every time! We came here for dinner and it was amazing. I haven't been to a Thai restaurant in a long long time. But we dropped by and the staff was so pleasant And humble. The menu had a lot of items I haven't had in a long time. Some of the dishes such as crispy pata are Filipino dishes. The 4 of us opted for the scallops, sirloin with basil rice, chicken green curry, Thai papaya salad and garlic crispy pork belly. Every dish was flavorful and excellent. We couldn't be happier. The sirloin was cooked a perfect medium rare on a hot plate. Basil Rice was delicious. The pork belly was so crispy. And the scallop was tender and flavorful. I wish it was an extra large scallop! Service was really really good. Food on the other hand is pretty mid. We had the scallop zapp, crying sirloin steak and the kasoy duck that everyone seems to get. The kasoy duck was good.. but the kasoy broth was lacking flavor. I had high hopes for this dish as it seems like lots of people get it. But it was the best dish we had between the three we ordered. For the crying sirloin steak, I had expected a much spicier and more sour sauce that came with it. It's just steak with a sweet and sour sauce in my opinion. Scallop zapp was good, just wish they had put more lime juice and I think that would definitely elevated the dish completely. Overall, I think this place is pretty mid. A relatively new Thai restaurant making a splash in the Union City food scene! Tucked into a strip mall just blocks away from the BART station, Kapow Thai Eatery has generated a lot of interest from locals with their photogenic, yet delicious dishes authentically representing Thai cuisine. The parking lot is tight during peak times but this strip mall isn't frequented much aside from a few shops and has good churn. You'll find a spot most definitely but the restaurant itself isn't huge so a short wait may be expected. We came for an early dinner and they had plenty of tables for us to choose from. Most of their tables fit small to medium sized groups but larger groups may need to consider reserving in advance. As we stepped in, the staff greeted us and sat us with waters and menus. There were two menus, one for the food and one for the drinks. Both are pretty simple to peruse through but the food menu doesn't have any pictures. The descriptions are pretty good at previewing what you'll get for each dish but I found asking the staff or referring to pictures online did more justice. If in doubt, their chef specials are solid options, but being a Thai eatery, curries and duck are likely your best bet. The drink menu on the other hand does have some pictures and has a few specialty drinks for the sweet toothed folks. Naturally, we ordered a few items to give this place a good try. Gui chai thod (chive cake) - hands down one of the best appetizers I've had of this variety and for me, a must get each time. Each piece is bite sized and can be skewered with the wooden pick they give you. The crispy exterior pairs exceptionally well with the chewiness of its center. The smell, taste, and texture of this dish with the dipping sauce as an added component makes this simple, yet complex chunk of veggie infused mochi a fantastic first impression. Tom kha - creamy soup heavy with lemongrass fragrance and flavor. You have the option to add protein (chicken, tofu, shrimp, seafood) to make this a filling bowl. It comes out hot and maintains its temperature quite well! Kow Soi Duck - succulent slices of duck served atop noodles and intended to be smothered or dipped in the delicious curry. This dish was hearty, presented beautifully deconstructed, and flavorful. A bit pricey for a bowl of noodles but quality is there. Crab fried rice - big portion of fried rice with big chunks of crab. Another hearty dish perfect for sharing and can easily feed 4-6 people with seconds to spare. As the menu indicates, this dish is big on umami. Thai tea - I opted for no ice as I'm not a fan and despite no ice to dilute the flavor, it wasn't too overly sweet and satisfied my craving. Pink Thai milk - unless you're a fan of peptobismol, I would stay away from this despite its beautiful, radiant color The staff were wonderful in communicating with us on what to expect with flavors, ingredients, portion size, sweetness (regarding drinks) and methods of consumption. They all had smiles and were quick to clear our tables. Overall, Kapow Thai Eatery has made a mark in this small city and I hope it's here to stay with its authentic Thai dishes and exceptional quality of food and service. The prices certainly reflect these qualities but as a novice of the Thai cuisine, this place was worth a visit and many more in the future, just perhaps once in a long while due to the prices of eating out nowadays. Came to Kapow for my birthday dinner to close out the month Ordered the Sirloin Nam Tok (part of the new menu), Larb Wrap, Thai green & pink tea, and mango sticky rice. The Sirloin Nam Tok came grilled with Thai herbs, toasted rice powder, dried chili, kaffir lime leaves, and a house-made tamarind sauce--but the meat was pretty tough to slice and chew. Wouldn't order again. The Larb Wrap (minced pork with roasted rice powder, chili flakes, citrus, herbs, and fried garlic) had good flavor but felt like it was missing something. Both the green and pink Thai teas were overly sweet--the pink one tasted like Pepto Bismo.. Mango sticky rice was decent, but nothing memorable. Okay I just found my favorite Thai restaurant. I met the owner, and Jaz and were already like family. The food, from appetizer to main course and dessert were outstanding. The restaurant is a bit smaller, but they're dynamite. The way they decorated, the mural, awesome. Appetizer: crispy garlic chili pork belly. This was absolutely insane good. Don't be foolish. Came again and decided to stick with some old, Wings of Kapow and Scallop Zapp, and try some new things as well, Pad Thai and Chicken Satay. Wings of Kapow and Scallop Zapp tasted as great as last time. The Wings this time though felt a bit... smaller. The portion size looks the same, but the wings were less "meatier," so it wasn't as satisfying. Pad Thai was good. A little bit too sweet for my liking at first, but once I squeezed in some lemon the sourness balanced it out. Chicken Satay was unfortunately a miss for me. Flavors were great, cucumbers were yummy, and the peanut sauce was amazing, but the chicken didn't impress me. It wasn't dry, but it wasn't particularly juicy or tender either. The Thai Pink Milk was also a miss. Looks interesting, but the taste is exactly the same as the strawberry milk you would get during lunch in Elementary school. What made up for this visit however is the Mango Sticky Rice - it exceeded all my expectations. Loved the sweetness and texture. I was expecting some sourness from the mangos but they were also very sweet; I was pleasantly surprised. Would return solely for this dessert. Service like last time was great. Tried this new Thai spot on a Monday evening and was seriously impressed! The service was quick and incredibly friendly from the moment we walked in. The restaurant itself has a very modern, clean aesthetic that feels fresh and welcoming. There isn't a ton of seating, so I imagine it probably gets pretty busy on weekends. We started with the crispy pork belly appetizer and it was incredible. Perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the two dipping sauces that came with it were both delicious and really complemented the dish. For entrées we ordered the Pad C U and the Kow Soi duck. The Pad C U was amazing--light, clean, and full of flavor. They're also very generous with the meat, which was a nice surprise. The Kow Soi duck was the star of the show. Can't say it was worth the wait since service wasn't to par as the first time we went. But that didn't stop us from enjoying our food. Food is on the pricier side but so worth. We've ordered different items to try each time we came. My partner absolutely loves the creamy salted egg squid. The texture of the squid was perfect. We've had their green Thai as well. It was a tasty dine overall but I definitely feel like it is overpriced. My mom and I shared the calamari, yellow curry w/beef & a thai fried rice. We also each got a drink. My favorite was the yellow curry with beef which I asked them to make extra spicy. It was disappointingly not spicy but the flavor was rich and coconut-forward. I like that the beef wasn't an extra charge, but the curry was basically close to $20 anyways. The calamari was perfectly crispy but flavorless on its own, and the thai fried rice was good but not worth spending $18 on. Drinks were nice and tasty but on the sweeter side. The place was crowded on a Saturday around 1PM and we waited around 30 minutes. The place is cramped but cozy. Workers were really efficient. It's a nice, quaint Thai spot that just opened about four months ago, and it already seems to have a loyal following. We ordered the ka pow, pineapple fried rice, chicken satay, a couple of drinks, and dessert. The ka pow was on the spicier side but very flavorful. The pineapple fried rice had a generous portion size with that distinct wok-hei flavor, which I loved, and a good amount of shrimp. The chicken satay came in thick, juicy pieces of chicken breast and paired really well with the peanut sauce and cucumber salad. The service was great! We started with the Larb Wrap, a funky mixture of ground chicken, roasted rice powder, chili, garlic, and herbs, served with lettuce leaves for making wraps. Next, the Pad Eggplant was a simple stir-fried dish of eggplant, bell pepper, onion, tofu, and basil in a sticky, savory sauce. But the standout dishes had yet to come. The Crab BBQ Noodle was made of thin egg noodles covered in Moo-Dang sauce, served with sliced BBQ pork, chunks of crab meat, and spinach. The sauce gave the noodles a vibrant dark pink color, though the presentation was more memorable than the flavors. The Kow Soi Duck was a bowl of egg noodles topped with sliced duck breast, served with crispy egg noodles and a rich coconut curry broth on the side. The flavor of the curry broth was deep and delicious, and serving it separate from the noodles kept them from getting soggy. However, my favorite dish of all was the Creamy Salted Egg Squid, made of squid, bell peppers, onions, and scallions stir-fried in an amazing umami salted egg yolk sauce that went nicely with a side of rice! What deliciousness! Overall, the flavors and presentation of this modern Thai restaurant were on point, and the service was quick and friendly too. Entry: You put ur name on the waitlist tablet by the door. It'll ask if your party is all there or partially. If you elect partially, you NEED to go back to the tablet and mark that everyone in your party has arrived otherwise they won't seat you. Menu: For a thai place, it def has a limited selection but I was able to find a few items that were vegetarian/vegan. Food: I got the fresh spring rolls with tofu for the appetizer. These were just ok but of course, peanut sauce MADE this worthwhile. For the entree, I really wanted to try the Ka Pow "must try" item but the waiter said it's just a stir fry that's mainly protein. For a vegetarian, I assumed that would just be a plate full of tofu so I elected to go with the Pad Kee Mao. IMO can never go wrong with drunken noodles, and I was right! It was delicious! Surprisingly, unlike other Thai places, they didn't ask for spice level. For dessert, my friend and I shared the fruit and ice cream (middle option). This was quite unique and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The ice cream was pandan flavor and came on top of a slice of bread. 5-star Review for this first visit. Kapow Thai Eatery is a new modern Thai spot in Union City and what stood out for me are their specialty dishes. KOW SOI DUCK: Rich coconut, yellow curry broth (with a slight kick), egg noodles . and a topping of crispy, deep-fried egg noodles. The dish was accompanied by a side of fried shallots, pickled mustard greens and topped with wonderfully tender and perfectly cooked duck. Loved the different textures, flavors but wish they provided a tad more of the pickled mustard greens. Ate only half as it was so rich, decadent, and not cheap so saved for another meal. 5/5 WING OF KAPOW - crispy, deep-fried chicken wings with their signature sweet sauce. They split the flats so at first glance thought they were some skinny wings. Having them split made them crispier yet still juicy. - 5/5 LARB WRAP - minced chicken and pork - a very flavorful dish with lime juice, fish sauce, chili, and fresh herbs like mint, cilantro, scallions and served with romaine...so good! Items were a hit - flavors balanced with right amount of heat, sweetness, saltiness, varying textures and nicely presented. Service friendly, efficient and welcoming. Weekday lunch at 1140 was full. Didn't see any wait by the time we left but once word gets out, this place will be busy! For myself, I'd avoid the weekends as place is small with tables close together. I can see a min 30 min wait at peak times. For a more leisure dining experience I'd recommend weekday dining. Shared lot parking with other businesses so limited. Such a small, cozy, clean aesthetic! The staff was very friendly. The place was small and might have a wait but it goes by fast bc their service is quick. My face dishes were the papaya salad and chicken wings. So much flavor. The duck was also good but probably would have preferred it on rice than noodles (personal preference). Ambiance: small little restaurant. Tables were a bit close together. Casual dining with a kiosk in the front to check in. Warning: can get very busy. When we went there were 5 parties ahead of us. Service: food comes out quick and plates get cleared fast. When we started to slow down we were immediately asked how the food was and if boxes were needed. The waiter helped bag the food and check was brought out quickly. Definitely quick and efficient service. No complaints. Food: - scallops: 5/5 came with a tangy sauce and fish roe on top that added a nice crunch. Would order again - calamari: 5/5 color was lighter than I was used to, but the crunch was definitely still there. Came with a lemon and some sweet and sour sauce. Loved the batter. Light and crunchy - khao kha moo: 3/5 problem with this one was that I ordered the khao moo dang, but think I was misheard. Food was brought out and I was confused because it looked different from the pictures I saw on yelp, but I ate it anyways. My fault for not asking for clarification.
