We ordered the Fancy Roll Tray for pickup, but it wasn't fancy. We were expecting more variety, but most of the seven rolls were essentially the same fish prepared in different ways. The presentation was pretty, but for a tray called the "Fancy Roll Tray," we expected a better variety of fish, flavors, and rolls. Overall, it was a bit disappointing for the price.
Poke and clam chowder. So... good. If I lived closer, I would go again and again and again. Service is quick and friendly. There are plenty of items to choose from on the menu. Its more of a to-go place, no sit downs. Plenty of parking!
Hole in the wall, mom and pop shop. Budget friendly rolls. Poke combo starting at around $12. Not too filling, but you get what you pay for. Fish and chips, lightly battered and cooked and fresh oil. They are skimpy on sauces and napkins.

Clams present with chunks of potatoes. This was decent 3.25/5 Service pleasant and no nonsense. I'd return for the soft-shelled crab burger and clam chowder and make small mods at home. 4 tables for dine-in but most orders were for take out. Private lot parking.

This place is great for chill ass sushi at a great price. Easy, quick options and combos. The fish is nice and fresh, and it's just the right size portion wise for me.
Found this place via other Yelp reviews as I was looking for a new poke spot to try out. I'm giving this place a 3 star because the dishes I ordered were okay. My kiddo liked her California roll, I didn't get to try any. The spicy salmon poke was good and decent price for amount you get. I did add some soy sauce and wasabi with the spicy salmon poke and that made it so much better. I didn't enjoy the fish ceviche though I wasn't sure what type of fish it was but it had a very fishy taste to it. I wish it was more citrus flavor to it. The customer service was awesome though! I would go back to try their burgers and other dishes for sure.

Parking is plenty, lots of seafood to choose from, and the catering looks delish Service is neat and there's good enough seating to enjoy a lunch here.

I do wish the fish was a bit fresher in taste as I had some chunks that didn't go down well. I would recommend getting the poke only as part of a combo or with an accompanying roll to actually be a meal. RECS: + California roll ($4.50) was surprisingly really good! Rice was cooked well and imitation crab was perfect. Easily my favorite over the poke + Spicy salmon ($8) had good flavor, better than I remembered. The sriracha definitely comes through as does other savory, umami flavors

Pretty solid seafood spot with sushi rolls, fried seafood, poke and a little bit for everyone. I got the fried shrimp and teriyaki salmon special which was pretty good. The salmon was a little overcooked and dry but overall was tasty and I'd get it again. The clam chowder needed more clams but the flavor was there. Overall, pretty good value and a welcome addition to the East Bay.

Conveniently located on a main road, Castro Valley Blvd, we easily found parking at their lot. Upon entering, the shop is bright, vibrant and clean. Their order counter is right at the entrance to order first, and they have a few tables inside. Good for small groups. Their Poke Special Combo comes with your choice of shoyu/spicy tuna or salmon, rice, seaweed salad and water. I ordered the spicy salmon and thought it was great! Fresh, well seasoned and really hit the spot. Highly recommend a visit.

The line was out the door, so it took a while to order, but it was definitely worth the wait. We got one of each: spicy salmon and shoyu salmon poke. I thought I would like the shoyu more, but the spicy salmon ended up being better! We wanted to buy a block of tuna, but unfortunately it wasn't available for purchase at the time. We also ordered from the hot food menu and got the fish and chips. It was okay, but the portion size was solid for the price. Overall, a great experience during their soft opening, and we'd gladly come back!

Plenty of options to poke, burgers, plates, clam chowder and many more options. I love the batter on the fish and their tartar sauce was so good! Not that nasty onion vinergery smell and taste. I was in the neighborhood so I thought I'll drop by to order lunch. I ordered a soft shelled crab burger and the spicy salmon poke. When I opened the lid of the burger container, I thought I was getting this huge sandwich but it turns out, only the bun was huge. The crab barely had any meat and the were a few slivers of onions and a thin piece of lettuce. I tasted more bread than anything else. The only thing I enjoyed from eating the burger was the sauce. It was tangy which cut off the greasiness from the fried soft shelled crab. As for the spicy salmon poke, I thought the portions were pretty skimpy but the salmon was fresh. read more

Our current favorite "fast food" more like fast pick up but the food is FRESH & delicious. If you like traditional poke, I want to say this place definitely matches that vibe. If you want A LOT toppings this might not be for you so don't go complaining that they don't offer a lot of toppings, they just don't do that here okay. Respect that. Their prices are fair, especially in this area & in this economy for this type of cuisine. This is our 7+ time (I lost count tbh) coming here at this point so figured I'd give a review!! My spicy salmon poke combo comes with the spicy salmon poke, a serving of seaweed salad, & good portion of rice. We also ordered a dynamite roll, the tempura was delicious, the tuna was soooo filling, and went perfect with the poke, my husband and I shared the roll so it was big enough to share for two people! We personally love coming here because it helps us meet our protein goals and the food is delicious, the staff is always polite and helpful, very nice people. The cozy shop displays their ready to go poke which is nice to look at when you walk in. The spicy salmon poke is something I crave often so we probably been coming here almost every other week or so because we LOVE it. I don't feel bloated after eating here, only energized, full & satisfied but not sluggish or anything like that. So even tho the portions are great, we don't feel like we over ate WHICH has definitely helped us eat better overall. The portions are generous and healthy, we don't feel guilty about coming here and getting our munch on cuz it's honestly one of our favorite meals & places to order from right now! I'm actually on my way here to pick up another order cuz we're in the mood for it again! Appreciate this local poke spot in the Bay Area, and hope to continue coming. read more
I was rolling around Castro Valley and I saw Basa Seafood Express and Decided to Stop in!!! I strolled in and approached the Cashier and Perused the Menu !!! I ordered the Seafood Combo!!! I Paid by Credit Card!! They Gave me a Pager to Notify me when my Order was Ready!!!! I had them Wipe my Table top off because it was Dirty!!! My Seafood Combo had 3 Pieces of Fish . 3 Fried Oysters and 6 Pieces of Fried Shrimp !!!! On a Bed of Crinkle Fries !!!! The Seafood Combo was very Tasty!! They definitely change their Cooking Oil Frequently!! The Fried Oysters were the Bomb!!! Fried Fish was Corn Meal Coated and Well Seasoned!! Fried Shrimp was cooked to perfection!! They require a Minimum $10 Purchase for Credit Card Usage!!! They also Charge $. 10 cent for a Bag when you place a To Go Order!!!! Checked out the new seafood spot in Castro valley today. The workers were friendly and greeted me as soon as I walked in the door to assist me. I had ordered ahead online and was a few minutes early. Basa has a parking lot right outside that has a few spots but I can see it posing a problem during peak hours. There was a few tables inside but I would assume most people take their meals to go because the place itself is relatively small. I ordered the spicy salmon poke, side of rice and a dynamite roll to go. My total about $23 which I thought was pretty reasonable. My personal preference for poke is a lot of toppings so I would say this didn't exactly hit the spot for me but it did taste fresh and tasted good. The dynamite roll was good and crispy, id probably get it again. The rice was fluffy and warm. I'd definitely come back to this restaurant and try different items on the menu especially for their price points. read more
Basa Seafood Express recently opened in Dell Cafe's 3 year vacant space. Interior retrofitted totally in a service counter, display cases and a few tables. Basically setup as "to-go" biz re "express". Exterior has a new signage, new paint over, new food pics on windows. Parking lot holds up to 20 cars. Greeted courteously by friendly cashier who explained many things not easily discerned from the menus. Entrees aren't grab n go. Must order thru cashier who rings it up. Ordered. Pd. Food brought to table is 6 minutes. Offerings: poke, combo meals, seafood & chips, ceviche, clam chowder, salads, seafood burgers, rice bowls, sides, sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi, drinks. Bites: 5 pieces hamachi sashimi (10) -ultra fresh taste, buttery melt in mouth quality. Generous medium thin cuts. Fresh bed of Cucumber sticks. Ample ginger slices Slurps: clam chowder (12 oz. 6) -came with sardine crackers which wasn't eaten. -chowder and it's contents didn't have a distinctive taste: chucks of potato, chewy clam bits, a thyme leaf, bacon ish notes, celery bits, butter notes, garlic notes. Chowder was thick, had a muddled aura. sodium aftertaste. (Ai overview) suggests butter, flour, onions, black pepper & salt, clam juice, chicken broth, half & half may also be present. 3.5 stars: worthy. Quantity: good. My husband and I have been picking up poke here for the past few weeks since it opened, and we decided to get it for dinner and try some rolls. Our order: salmon poke tray ($12), the double salmon roll ($12), and the hawaiian roll ($12 ish). My theory about why people give this place bad reviews is that they're not going in with the right expectations. This place is NOT a cute vibes sit down seafood restaurant, it's a grab and go spot that prioritizes fish freshness over service. Pros: - despite the poke trays being their signature "thing," there's actually a pretty wide variety of menu to choose from. - Available parking right in front that doesn't really get too difficult since people are mostly here for grab and go - super fresh fish! The poke is always really tasty and doesn't taste fishy, and it comes with a delicious spicy soy sauce that is very flavorful - Pretty affordable for sushi - I Think it's hard to get rolls of this size for $12 at any other sit down restaurant. And the rolls have great fish to rice ratio too - I didn't feel like they were padding the roll with things like cucumbers/rice. I cannot speak to their cooked items, because I think if you're trying to get other cooked items you should go to a different restaurant - Small quaint atmosphere, there are some tables if you want to eat your poke or sushi right away Cons: - Does close "early" ish around 7:30pm, so make your way here for an on-time dinner! - The chopsticks they give out are the really cheap kind that can easily give you splinters 10/10 will be back for the fresh poke! read more

We waited a long time for this local business to open and it was worth the wait! Such a nice family owned business! Great customer service & the food is cooked to order, so it's hot & delicious! Nice number of tables if you want to eat there, we did. They have the buzzer disc to notify you when your food is ready. We also had shrimp & chips too. They were perfectly golden in a crisp coating. Not greasy at all! And they have crinkle fries with a light seasoning that is just right! Get by there for a visit, the owner is very kind & they express appreciation for your business. This place is more of a grab and go place, or order over the phone for pickup. Limited seating, vibe is utilitarian. Got the spicy salmon, and while the flavor is really good and spicy- I really disliked how the fish is cut. The pieces are cut sooo small it feels like minced salmon, you don't really get the texture of the fish. Even though the flavors are there, the way the fish is cut reads to me as cutting corners. The portion is also kind of small. They had several things on their menu but it made me not confident to try anything else that I couldn't visibly see because I wasn't sure of how it would be cut/ prepared. That being said, it seems like a lot of people like this place - maybe they do great platters or other items that are redeeming. Probably won't come back. read more
Went to the newly opened Basa Seafood Express on Castro Valley Blvd. We were there around 3 in the afternoon on a weekday. Not busy. Sunny 85 degree weather. Interior is simple two refrigerators with seafood options and beverages. Only laminated paper menu taped to the ordering counter. The front door propped open obviously for airflow. Order at the counter seat yourself in the dining area. Here are is the good, the bad and ugly. Good Very inexpensive Clam Chowder Spicy salmon poke Large clean parking lot Bad The fish n Chips fish is dry and institutionally prepared Fish ceviche and shrimp is bland Just shrimp with pico de gallo Any thing that is not already in a prepared tray there is a wait. Ugly They don't turn on the AC so it's hot in the dining area. Plus the flies that fly in the open front door. Hard to eat and swipe the flies away. There were two counter persons one was rude. One was clueless. Hopefully they can give a better experience after this review. read more

Still on my journey to find in the Bay Area (or Reno, NV) a HI poke place that I miss so much. Sadly, this will not be it, so the journey continues... Overall a 3.5 experience rounded up. Quality/Quantity - Due to the size of this location and how busy they were, we decided to take our lunch to-go. Got here at noon and they were out of tuna already?!? Today we got the following: Large 16 oz Clam Chowder $7 - Decent quantity, but we felt a little too watery for us. We like a heartier clam chowder. Also, it did not have many clams. Dragon Roll $12.50 - Smaller than we are used to, but the flavors were okay. Mixed Sushi - My order. This was done well. Love the "tight" roll, where the sushi does NOT fall apart when you pick it up. Squid Salad $8 - Just okay. We actually liked the ones from Costco or Korean supermarkets better. It was more flavorful. Well, this tasted very similar to the ones sold at Costco. Atmosphere - Small location, with limited indoor and outdoor seating. Huge parking lot. One unisex restroom; you need to ask for a key to use. Service - 3 star experience. Not good or bad. We shared with who I think is one of the owners, that we were first time customers, but she did not seem to care. So as a first time customer, I had many questions. She offered no suggestions, just answered my questions. If I had more time, I would have spent more $ and bought one of your combos. But a line was starting to form behind me and I did not want to be rude. Price - $40, reasonably priced for what we got. Can I suggest an itemized receipt...? I do not know what I paid for my Mixed Sushi, but then I should/could have also asked. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success at this location since May of this year. Writing this as I savor over the last bite of my food.. simply just full of joy that Basa is now open in the East Bay. $10 minimum spending for card charges, which is super practical. Prices are fair, quality is great, and most importantly, consistent! Basa has always been an easy, simple meal to not over complicate a basic sushi craving in my opinion. A CA roll & spicy salmon poke costed me a little under $15. Pokes are already packed and ready to go, as well as certain rolls/combos. It could be a super quick in and out visit, great for those who're on a time crunch. The staff is kind, very informative. Seating is available inside. Parking is plentiful outside as they have a spacious lot. read more
Finally a fresh poke spot close to me! Came here for dinner around 5pm and it was empty. The interior is very clean and the service quick. As I was there waiting for my food lots of other people came in and it got packed for dinner service. Wanted to try a variety of things so I ordered the rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, shoyu tuna poke and the chicken teriyaki bowl. Everything was delicious! The sushi rolls and the poke were very fresh. The rainbow roll only came with two types of fish on top, but overall the roll was great. The chicken teriyaki bowl was a bit of a disappointment. I honestly expected a bigger portion. The flavor and consistency of the chicken was good, but I just wish they gave more. The veggies were non existent. Two pieces of steamed broccoli and carrots isn't enough. The portion of rice was huge compared to everything else. I'll be back to try what else they have. Good spot for grab&go ... nothing much to rave about. I ordered chicken teriyaki which comes with fresh steam broccoli and carrot, sauce was a bit too salty while salmon was fresh but sauce was too salty as well. Love that they have big parking lot.... read more
Get your fresh poke here. Their poke had great flavors. On the pricey end. I wished they would sell their poke by the pound. The clam chowder was a miss. It did not had enough clams it had more potatoes than anything. Service was good. The was had small eating area. I think it had 2 to 3 big tables and 2 small tables with chairs. So you can enjoy your food here or take it with you. Sorry I didn't get to take pictures of our food. read more

Basa, commonly known as a species of fish, is a great name for this little shop out here in Castro Valley as it serves delicious sashimi/poke grade fish as well as cooked/fried fish for their prepared meals. Sharing a parking lot with a building that looks to be under renovations, Basa commands the whole lot (for now) and sits comfortably in view of the busy street and intersection. Despite the small shop, they do have a steady flow of customers from locals as well as visitors from afar familiar with the shop with the same name located across the bay in San Francisco. As you enter the storefront, you'll be greeted by the staff and display cases of their canned and bottled beverages and ready-made seaweed salad, sauces, and poke cuts and sashimi grade salmon and tuna. You'll also see up ahead the full menu for items that require a bit more preparation in the kitchen like sandwiches, fried goodies, and soup (clam chowder). After placing your order, if you have any prepared food, take a seat and wait with your little electric beeper/buzzer that they'll hand you (when your order is ready, you'll hear the beep and feel the buzz). Otherwise, if you're only grabbing their raw fish, you may already be on your way to enjoying your food. Either way, the wait shouldn't be more than 10 minutes or so (longer for those fish and chips). They have quite a few tables for indoor dining and it's quite casual/comfortable. There's no table service so be sure to clean up after yourself. They also have a gender neutral bathroom for use while you're there. We ordered a large cup of their chowder which was not as salty as others we have had; it tasted healthier, chunkier with the large pieces of potato, and more complex due to the plentiful bits of clam. The poke boxes were pretty good portioned for one (maybe even two if you have other food to supplement); we made our own rice to pair with the fish. Each box comes with their house marinated soy sauce and it's super tasty! Their fish and chips were also freshly fried and are more Cajun style (think crispy, tender catfish) as opposed to more New England style. The fries (chips) that go with the fish were seasoned well and super crispy. The staff were friendly and efficient. If you speak Cantonese, you may be able to converse with the store owners and practice the language! Overall, Basa Seafood Express is your quick stop for fresh poke or sashimi grade tuna and salmon while you're in the area. The price is reasonable and there's a lot of churn in this shop so you'll be sure to get a fresh taste each time. They just opened so they're still getting their bearings and establishing their full menu but if you're just looking to satisfy that poke craving, they're ready for you to swim on by! read more

We came here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and it wasn't too busy. My nephew and niece wanted to try it out so why not. I know this place just recently opened up so it's always exciting to try something new. I'm currently pregnant so I am a little upset that I couldn't have the raw stuff. My order was the Saigon garlic shrimp rice bowl. My niece and nephew both ordered the poke combo with shoyu salmon. My review will only be for the Saigon garlic shrimp. It was mid. Comes with white rice , and blanched brocolli and carrots, pretty standard and basic nothing special. The shrimp itself has an okay sauce but it was honestly just O.K. Unfortunately, this first impression was not a lasting one for this particular dish. It's not something I'd be ordering again. As far as the shoyu poke goes, my nephew and niece liked it. This place popped up on social media and heard that they serve fresh seafood. So I decided to come here. This place seems to be one of those restaurants where you go for lunch and have it to go. Many people were seated on the tables not to really dine in, but to wait for their orders. It serves all sorts of seafood: sushi, burgers, fried seafood, poke, etc. I heard that their main location is at SF, but they recently opened their other location in Castro Valley. Normally when you go out to eat poke, you choose your base, protein, sauces, and other toppings. This one is different because poke is served in a tray with a side of rice and seaweed. I heard that they're out of spicy salmon poke, but there's some in the display glass. However, I think we're told that they need to chill them first before serving them. Prices are fairly cheap. We called in our order and when picked up, we were told we cannot call in anymore- I thought that's the best way to avoid the crowd but I guessed they cannot handle the added services.... Food wise - portion is smaller than the pictures The pokes were fresh. The spicy is good and tang Garlic fries were. Bit bland and flat Soft shell crab sandwich has no crunch and did not screams.
