I got the Mango crunch roll which was really good loved the flavor. Also we loved the monster roll (shrimp tempura) and the sauce on top really added to the flavor. My hubby and I finally got a date night in on Friday and ended up at Kiya Sushi in Fremont. Well worth the wait! As a vegetarian, I always walk into sushi spots mentally bracing for slim pickings. But Kiya actually delivered. The veggie options felt intentional and not a substitution tacked onto the menu. Everything was fresh and well put together, and you could tell the kitchen has standards for what goes out. I went with the Veggie Crispy Roll (subbed soy paper) and the Mango Secret as-is. Both were delish and would recommend if you're a veggie lover! A little spotlight for their garlic edamame! The spice, the garlic - it was so well flavored/balanced that I found myself using the regular edamame and dipping it into the leftover garlic/spices. Haha One heads up on seating: if you're going on a weekend, grab a reservation. We walked in and waited about 20 min for two, which wasn't bad, but the spot is cozy. I looked on Yelp for my husband's favorite food and found Kiya Sushi. When we showed up, parking was really tight with a lot of cars going in and out--the lot is way too small for the number of businesses there. Nevertheless, we stayed and were told it would be a 40-minute wait for a party of eight. They were really busy and had a lot of people waiting at the door, so they were short with us and barely spoke. Unfortunately, once we were seated, the service didn't get any better. We sat for at least 5-10 minutes with no one coming to our table, so we finally asked someone passing by if we could put our order in. She told us to wait and that she'd be right back. When she returned, she said it wasn't a good time to place the order because they were really busy... like, what??? We asked her to clarify two more times, and we heard her right--she wanted us to wait to order because the food would take too long since they were so busy. Not sure how waiting would help when they were still taking other tables' orders. We decided to go ahead and put our order in anyway and just wait. Since we were a party of eight, the food came out sporadically. Some of us got soups (for those who ordered full plates), and some sushi started coming out. We were starving--it was almost 8pm--so we started eating. Unfortunately, my kids were the last to get their food since they ordered chicken teriyaki plates. My sister had a doctor's appointment at the nearby Kaiser Medical Center and I wanted to try this place for lunch afterwards. Found a parking right in front which said reserved but the hostess said it was ok to park there. We walked in and it's a cozy place and ordered 2 salmon teriyaki lunch specials, which come with miso soup, a generous salad with delicious dressing, 2 gyozas light and crispy, 4 California rolls, and of course the tasty salmon. Their karaage chicken is a favorite, and every piece of nigiri is incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our New Year's Eve dinner, we treated ourselves to a few specials, including the wagyu nigiri and a fantastic lobster roll, our first time having lobster in a sushi roll. Wow! The service here was amazing. The parking situation was difficult on a Friday night. We got here around 8pm and zero parking anywhere. Luckily found street parking. To be expected though, given the amount of food spots in this tiny plaza. There were only 15 minute parking spots available, which I assume was for the liquor store mostly or for pick up. We were seated right away for a party of 6. Luckily, a large group had just left! They set down a bowl of complimentary edamame which has never happened to me before, a nice touch! I was eying the dinner combination options but ultimately went with the chirashi don. Several people in my party went with the dinner combination and wow they give you full rolls! The chirashi don was plated beautifully, the octopus was a little fishy so wasn't my favorite. Wasabi really helped tone it down. My partner got the chicken udon and California crispy roll. He enjoyed his meal as well. Portions were very generous and food was good in quality and taste. They informed us that they were offering free ice cream and asked if we wanted any. The replacement of layang layang express in the plaza where no restaurants survive, not even the beloved lizu chinese, is kiya sushi and kiya sushi is great! Like many great sushi restaurants, kiya served us edamame beans. Normally these are salted to the extreme for flavior but like everything else, kiya is more subtle. The edamame was low sodium and they were great. I will never complain about any complomentary apperizers as they should not be expected. Many people know that kiya in japanese means sparks joy and kiya sushi does just that. We ordered 2 rolls and an appetizer. The ctazy roll came out early and fast, well before the karaage and golden gate roll. This is a served when ready restaurant and not a served together restuarant. Like all classy japanese restaurants, thus restaurants use a low sodium and regular authentic kikoman bottle. The crazy roll was my favorite but it was noted that the amount of avoxado used was subtle. I would order it again. One thing i loved was the giant plastic water cups with a slice of lemon kn it. To americans, water is key but to asians, they dont need it at all and they dont even drink beverages during a meal becuase it disrupts digestion. The ice in all my drinks were very subtle. My only wish is that is that they served more ice in the water and the cup they gave me with my coke. Kids love kataage since its just chicken nuggets. Kiya takes a different appeoach to their karaage and super fry them and use slim peices of chicken. They also use a very thin dip whixh is even different from non tradiotional restaurants. The final treat was a complimentary matcha ice cream desseet. A great finisj to a great meal. A great meal worth the lowest suggested tip amount of 18%. We ordered the Agedashi Tofu, Sushi Lunch Roll Combo, and two lunch specials The lunch specials were $14.95. It came with two gyozas, four pieces of California Roll and choice of protein. We had one with salmon and the second one with teriyaki chicken. The Sushi Lunch Roll Combo, we had the California Roll, Unagi Roll, and Tempura Roll. It also came with miso soup and salad. While we're waiting for our food, the friendly waitress brought over a bowl of complimentary edamame. The Agedashi Tofu was just ok, we had better. The Sushi Rolls were all made to order and we can taste the freshness of them. The salmon wasn't dry and they generous with the portion. The Teriyaki Chicken was tender and flavorful. Towards the end of our meal, the waitress gave us complimentary green tea ice cream. The prices are fairly reasonable and they were generous with the portions. During the few times I have dined here, I have only had to wait for a table once. The restaurant is clean overall, including the restroom -- which is a big plus for me. The quality of the ingredients stands out and is noticeably fresher than most sushi places. I can genuinely taste the difference. The food overall is quite good, and I especially enjoy the dressing on their house green salad. I typically do not care for spring mix, but the dressing makes it surprisingly tasty. I am also a fan of their mussels (not pictured); it is rare to find restaurants that prepare them the way Kiya Sushi does. Whenever I come across a unique dish that is well executed, they earn extra points from me. They also offer complimentary edamame and ice cream, which is a nice bonus.
