The best sushi I could eat close to home. I have been ordering their specialty rolls, like Lion King rolls, for two years via DoorDash delivery. I decided to sit down by myself in their renovated restaurant. It was more spacious since they took over part of the Kung Fu school next door. I was seated right away and offered water with complimentary refill. I ordered their Cherry Blossom Roll and The Bay (less spicy). The Cherry Blossom Roll had fresh raw tuna and salmon, and avocado filling, topped with tobiko, which was a healthier option to get and light to digest. The Bay was the opposite, and it took longer to arrive. It was drenched in melted mozzarella cheese and sriracha mayo covering the whole roll. It took me a while to pick up a roll because it was melted and flattened, hence it's like driving through the heavy fog in SF. Not much scallops in here. That's why it's called The Bay lol. They were not busy so it wasn't like they couldn't clean it. We had to swipe the crumbs and stains off our table. We really wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. The only decent thing that we got was the veggie tempura. That tasted the most fresh out of everything else. While we were eating we unfortunately felt sick. We didn't get checked on once while we were there. There was a deaf couple next to us that was trying to get the waitresses attention for a while that it got to a point to where we had to get up and get help for them. At the end of our dinner we were asked to give a 5 star review for free coconut jelly. That probably explains why the ratings are so high for this place. That didn't seem fair at all. It was so heavenly! The Mt Fuji roll was good as well. I had initially thought that the "mixed fish, onion"(per the menu) were inside the roll, but it was actually on the side. I've been seeing Kakuna trending a lot on IG recently so I decided it was time to finally check out their OG location! This place is a small hole in the wall located in a random shopping plaza. There is a large parking lot which is always a huge plus in my book. We came in around 1 pm on a Wednesday after doing our research on Yelp and seeing that they have happy hour! Happy hour is M-F from 1-2:15 pm and 7-8:45 pm. I ordered the 3 for $16 maki deal and got the negihama, salmon skin and spicy tuna rolls. My husband got the Kakuna roll and citrus roll. If you get two speciality rolls during happy hour then you also get another free maki rolls, so we got the eel avocado cucumber for free. It was a lot of food for 2 people. We were hungry but we definitely couldn't finish it all and ended up packing an entire takeout box for home! All the fish we had was very fresh and the sizes were very generous given the reasonable pricing. The citrus roll is similar to a 49er roll in that it's topped with lemon slices. We usually go for the 49er but wanted to try something new and this did not disappoint! It had great, bright flavor. My only complaint is that it was a bit wet from all of the sauce, but not soggy. The Kakuna roll was delicious as well and I would also order this again. All of the makis were really good. My favorite was definitely the spicy tuna and I loved that they added cucumber inside. Even my husband enjoyed this and he usually isn't a huge spicy tuna fan. The salmon skin was really crunchy and topped with even more salmon skin flakes. It was good but different from what I was expecting! We will definitely be back here soon. This spot is super worth it especially if you come during happy hour. The waitress sat us, & also did not advertise the AYCE, in fact we had to ask for menus & once we saw it wasn't on there, we asked if they were even doing the AYCE. Once she confirmed, we took a look at everything; now my fiancé has food allergies (eggs, peanuts & fish) so we intended for him to do a Bento box dinner or eat mostly the appetizers if he did the AYCE Regular (like we've done at plenty of other sushi spots). We asked the waitress our routine questions allergy wise, & when it came to the AYCE, she told us we couldn't do 1 person AYCE, & the other a bento box. I have never heard of that? I asked "so if one person comes in, they can't do AYCE?" She said no. So we were gonna do the AYCE for both of us, but the she told us we can't do 1 premium & 1 regular. I have seen many restaurants do this for big parties, which makes sense, but not for a Party of 2. Essentially we would've had to pay over $100 at the premium price just for him to not even be able to eat much? We are experts at eating out with his allergies, & have never come across a place that has these policies, so this was very disappointing for the lack of accommodation.
