It's more of a 3.5, but rounding up to a 4. My husband and I came to Ramen Shu after seeing a TikTok video introducing them and since we were still trying to explore restaurants near us we figured this would be a good option. Located in a quieter area of the plaza, there's a decent amount of parking available. We came on a Friday night so there was a decent amount of people waiting for a table. The restaurant was also bigger than we thought it was. We thought it was only what we saw from the door opening, but they had another room of tables available further back. We opted for the the black garlic ramen, both regular and spicy and the cold tofu appetizer. Honestly, the ramen was good, but I would've loved for it to have more garlic flavor. Even the spicy one had a mild kick, but not enough for me to consider it spicy... and I'm a weenie when it comes to spice. The star of the meal was the cold tofu appetizer - the flavor was on point with it and we were surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Overall, I think Ramen Shu is a good option for ramen if you're in the area, but I'm still on the search for our go to spot.

We walked in a bit before 8pm on a Wednesday. It wasn't that busy. They have two dining rooms. We ordered the black garlic oil/ Kuro tonkotsu ramen. We ordered bamboo shoot, corn, and extra spicy sauce: The extra spicy sauce wasn't even spicy so our waitress brought a chili oil. This actually had a kick to it. The broth was flavorful and wasn't salty. The fried garlic on the table was really good. I love garlic. I added a lot of garlic to my ramen. Chasu wasn't tough or dry. Decent ramen and service. Parking lot shared with other businesses.

Decent spot to get ramen. Place is a bit small but doesn't feel cramped. Pretty cozy. Staff there are friendly and attentive. The ramen was just a bit average for me. The chicken karaage came in 3 pieces and it was a good size for the 3 pieces. I never had karaage like that before since it's more bit size, but I had to tear it apart. Not a bad thing just different from what chicken karaage usually is.

Ramen Shu was good and an instant kid favorite. The service was fast and there were various options.

One of my new go-to ramen spots in the East Bay! I am a die hard fan for Ramen Nagi in Santa Clara, and I'd say this is the next best thing. The ramen here is incredibly delicious with perfectly bouncy noodles, umami broths, and fair prices for large portions. It is a smaller restaurant so expect waits. My friend and I did surprisingly get seated immediately on a Saturday as we arrived around 1:30pm. RECS: + Kuro tonkotsu ($17.95, 5/5 stars) was SO good. Broth was rich and the black garlic oil elevated the umami flavors. I got mine with medium spice, yum!

Came in for ramen and ended up having one of the best overall meals I've had in a while. The place is clean, cozy, and has a nice vibe the moment you walk in (loved the little seasonal/holiday touches). Service was friendly and everything came out fast. The food was the star. The ramen broth was rich and flavorful, noodles cooked perfectly, and the toppings were generous -- especially the egg and meat. We also ordered a few appetizers/sides and everything was fresh and packed with flavor. The presentation was on point too (you can tell they care). Prices were solid for the portion sizes, and there were a lot of tempting options on the menu -- I already want to come back and try more. If you're craving quality ramen + Japanese comfort food, this spot is a must. Highly recommend!

This review is long overdue -- I absolutely love Ramen Shu! This place has always been one of my go to spots for ramen. The service is friendly and fast; the restaurant is very welcoming. The staff is extremely kind and at ease. I love the staff's calmness and positive vibes. You can tell the team here really cares about quality and consistency. As for the ramen -- incredible! The broth is rich and flavorful, the noodles are perfectly cooked, and the ingredients always taste fresh. I have tried ALL throughout the years but my favorites are their Black Ramen and Tonkatsu Ramen! I've come here at least once a week with my family. Ramen Shu is perfect for lunch or dinner -- would highly recommend!

The vibes were immaculate and the food was amazing!! Not only is their ramen great, their rice dishes and appetizers were spectacular! The owner Kate and the serving staff were absolute top notch and friendly!! I will absolutely be coming back here in the future, so i recommend you give this place a shot! You won't regret it :))

Quite honestly the best Ramen I've had in the East Bay. I always choose to go to well known chains for their quality in the Peninsula and SF, but being able to enjoy a home made ramen bowl with its own uniqueness is really the way you're supposed to be able to enjoy Ramen. Service here is attentive and the food tastes like they really care about their craft! Their noodles have a texture I've never had elsewhere, and it has a great balance of firm and chewy that makes it unique. Eggs are cooked just right and portions and generous! It has a very cozy interior as well - would definitely recommend!

Staffs were nice and the shop was clean! We came for ramen but I was surprised to find Abura Soba on the menu! I love Abura Soba but have always gone to San Mateo for it - but now I know, I'm definitely coming back! The Charshu Abura Soba was hot and saucy with bamboo, seaweed, a soft boil egg and a piece of fish cake on top. It was a big bowl too! We also got a shoyu ramen as well as karaage, both yummy! Recommended and will return!

**Edit/Response to Owner** Hello Kate! No clarification needed. I'm well aware that the 4% only applies to credit card payments (it's what I had also mentioned in my review). As a customer I am still entitled to my own opinion. I also never challenged you on the 4% fee??? I only gave this spot a 3 star because the broth had no flavors other than the green onions. I had higher expectations given what you guys put on the "From the business" section on Yelp. I wish y'all the best too. Hoping this was an one off because I came in half an hour before closing. The broth itself was very bland, which, in turn, affected everything else. Not sure if Ramen Shu has their own black garlic oil because the broth didn't have the typical black oil color. The flavors just weren't there either. I did enjoy the noodles texture, but there were no flavor for it to absorb. The egg stood out the most; I thought both the marinade and runniness aspects were done well. Overall, an okay experience. This restaurant seems nice for small groups. It's in a good location with ample parking as well. I'm not a fan of the 4% fee for customers using credit cards. The ramen isn't exactly cheap either. I know it's not the typical "health mandate" fees we see in some areas, but it's still a fee being passed onto the customers nonetheless.

    Viki N.

Changing my review to 1* based on the restaurant manager's snarky responses to my husband and I's honest reviews. We'll gladly take your advice and dine elsewhere we feel more comfortable. Note: As of today (05/02/2025), the 4% surcharge is still not disclosed on the online menu as they claim.

Union City was one of the feel-good places throughout the Bay Area that has few shopping arcades, each with decently good businesses such as DAISO and others. After the Laundromat next door was a good izakaya spot known as Ramen Shu. My brother had chosen a ramen spot that's both cozy and spacious. Plenty of exquisite Japanese paintings and decorations, especially the large lamps dangling onto each tables. Background songs, mostly kpop from iHeart radio. My whole family and I, including my daughter, were here to finish up our tasty lunches before bringing my daughter to Kaiser which is few blocks away. My dad had Unagi Bento, my brother had pork ramen and a small kare raisu. While my mom and my daughter both had their kare raisu plates, I had vegan Aburasoba. Colorful veggie goodness with an added touch of vinegar oil, absolutely buttery when mixed together! Bamboo shoots, grape tomatoes, edamame beans, cilantro, diced onions, radish chips, and nori strips over soba. Never forget when I keep looking at it. I can tell that my daughter likes being in any izakaya since Sushi House in Alameda. She has yet to open up to new eats in due time. The menu options of Ramen Shu was fair; I consider having more veggie options though. Long as the quality of the food was good, Ramen Shu won't fail to please.
