We've been constantly seeing this place but never stopped by, and we're so glad we finally did. We had the best experience and truly loved it. We spoke with the business owner, and he attended us very well, very welcoming and friendly. I think this place is very underrated. We loved the chicken and beef ramen, and I personally enjoyed the sushi and shrimp as well. We even got a beer or two and really enjoyed our time. The restaurant itself has a very traditional theme, which makes the whole experience feel authentic. Really unfortunate experience. We came here just before 6 and waited 20 minutes before we were rushed out the door. We really wanted to give this place a try especially because it's a low-key casual mom and pop establishment. We offered to separate our group into two but that wasn't doable either. The party of two who came in after us ended up being seated. The server originally told us it'll be a long wait which we were okay with... So we weren't expected to be kicked out.. there wasn't any compromises either because half of us could've stayed to eat while the other half could've gone elsewhere. What a great place with lovely owners. The husband and wife run this restaurant together; they are so cute! The prices here are super reasonable if you're craving sushi or bento. I came here for their lunch special bento from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. You can choose two items, which come with miso soup, rice, and salad for $12. I picked beef teriyaki and gyoza. I took a lunch break here, and it ended up being almost 1.5 hours because it took so long for the food to come out and we were the only two people in the restaurant at the time. We also waited about an extra 20 or so minutes for the last dish to come out only for the cook/server/owner to tell us the tofu was still frozen and that he couldn't cook it. Looking at the reviews from long time customers I was excited to try this place out but man, do not come here. It seems like management changed. I went for lunch and the only nice thing I have to say is that service was friendly. First off, they don't have sushi on the lunch menu, you have to ask if they have it. The lunch menu has chicken/salmon bentos and ramen. I paid $19.99 for a chicken teriyaki bento that consisted of cold teriyaki chicken, gloopy lukewarm fried rice, shredded carrot stir fry, a pile of unshelled edamame, and an egg omelette. Very strange items to be in a Japanese bento. It took a long time to come out, and it came out cold. I also paid $17.99 for a bowl of pork tonkotsu ramen that was ramen you buy from the fridge section of a store topped with peas and carrots (?), wakame, half a boiled egg, and 3 slices of pork chashu. The chashu was okay, but the broth tasted extremely watery and the noodles were overcooked. Other customers that ordered sashimi and sushi also got their items extremely slowly-- confusing considering you just have to cut the prepped blocks of fish and assemble them. The owner said that they downsized the lunch menu from before to focus on quality of food, but they are failing on that front. On top of all this, service was extremely slow. The waitress was very apologetic-- she said it was her first few days working which I can understand. The man, who I think is the owner, can't remember more than one task at a time which is tough when you're working in a restaurant. There were only 4 tables occupied, but he kept forgetting orders and getting confused between the tables. I asked for the check 4 times before he finally brought it over. A small little mom & pop Japanese restaurant that's hidden just off Foothill Blvd. in Hayward that it's quite easy to miss, but step right in and it's like taking a step back in time to the years before the tech boom. Some call it old, I found it nostalgic. The staff is small - husband and wife duo who handle it all. Given that, service is a bit slow, but the food is delicious and extremely well priced. Seating is fairly limited, literally only 4-5 tables that are 4-seaters, so get there early or make a reservation, otherwise they'll have to turn you away. I'll definitely swing by next time I'm in that part of town if I need some great priced home cooked meal. read more

Wakamatsu is a small Japanese restaurant on Foothill Blvd that is just too easy to miss. And if you're missing it, you're missing out. I've been missing out for far too long. The restaurant opened in 1985 and it's run by a sweet older couple. It only has about 4-5 tables seating maybe 20-25 people at capacity. And as someone who was visiting for the first time, I could see why people would become regulars and why the restaurant has been around for so long. The other patrons in the restaurant knew the chef, server, and cooks by first name. Everyone was happy and smiling as they talked. Such a nice environment! The food is pretty good and the portions and prices are just right. I went with a dinner combo for $18 with karaage and tempura. Both perfectly fried and crispy. No left overs and I was satisfied full (not like I ate too much full) - like I said, the portions were just right. My fiancé ordered the sushi combo and sashimi combo appetizer and enjoyed it as well. Some other tips: - they have a private parking lot with quite lots of spaces and you can also park on the street - they take the last order 30 minutes before closing (so last order is 1:30pm for lunch and 7:30pm for dinner - be patient! They've got a small staff of 2-3. We got our food pretty quickly but there was only us and another group in the restaurant at the time. Walked in as a party of 4 during dinner time and the hostess said there would be 20+ min wait, but we were willing to be patient. We just stood by the door and checked out the menu, and in the meantime, another party of 2 came in and lined up behind us. After having waited about 10 minutes, the older female owner came out and asked if we had a reservation, to which we said we didn't, but the server said we could wait. The owner then yelled at the server asking "why did you tell them 20 min???" and then proceeded to tell us the kitchen was full and that the wait would be over an hour and we cannot be seated. By this time, a 2 person table was already available and we saw at least one other table finishing up soon. We reiterated that we were willing to wait and also offered to split our party into two parties of 2 so we can be seated at the tables opening up. She just kept saying "no" "no" "no" to everything we said, but offered the open table to the couple who came in after us??? At this point it was obvious we were just not welcome for who knows what reason, and decided to leave. A hole in the wall kinda place and decided to give a try. Stopped by on a Wednesday night after work. The place was established in 1988 and haven't done much of upkeep for along time. The owners are in their 70's and surprisingly they both still working and managing the place without much of help! We ordered the following dishes and will definitely come back just for the fried mackerel and chicken! Both super yummy and fresh! I will probably skip their sashimi and sushi rolls. My go to Sushi spot in Hayward. They serve not only just sushi and bento but also a variety of Japanese dishes such as Nabe, Sukiyaki and Oyako don. If you're adventurous and would like to try out some of the less well known but amazing and delicious dishes, then don't wait and get yourself a table at Wakamatsu! The restaurant is owned by an elderly couple and they make delicious food at a reasonable price. I ordered Chirashi bowl, fried oysters, Niku Nabe, fried baby octopus, yakitori and yaki zakana. Everything is prepared well and love the flavors! Sashimi are fresh and prepared very well. When you eat sushi from a regular basic sushi place, you might taste or smell that the meat was previously frozen and was not completely defrosted when served, but not this place! Everything is fresh that you can taste the difference. All their fried dishes are cooked very well. When they fry the food, they make sure to retain some moistures so when you eat them, it gives you that crisp outside, juicy inside satisfaction. A lot of Japanese restaurant would fry the heck out of their food that everything just taste like leather belt that's been sit out in the desert for 3 days. For a simple neighborhood sushi cafe it hits the mark. The atmosphere is relaxing (even with rush hour happening on Foothill just outside) and I think that has to do with the gentle kindness of the elderly couple in charge. For the slightly lower than average prices charged compared to other similar places, the food is good. I had 2 glasses of an easy to enjoy Sauvignon blanc with my soup and was very satisfied. I took extra sushi and seaweed salad home for lunch tomorrow and the tab was just over $40. I'll happily go back. read more
