    Vermecilli Noodles

I am a bit picky when it comes to foods so I'm always a sucker for restaurants that have a build-your-own option. The set up is similar to a Chipotle or Subway where you order up front and there's a variety of ingredients you can select from. To start, you get an option between rice, vermicelli, zucchini noodles or banh mi. Then you pick the protein and toppings you want. There's also no limit to the number of toppings (woohoo!). Finally for the sauce you can pick up to two. Honestly for someone who grew up eating a lot of Vietnamese food, this place is legit. The food was 5/5 for me. Both quantity and quality was there all at an affordable price. I'll definitely be coming back here.

I've had Moi before and have enjoyed the food. My most recent experience wasn't that great. The bahn mi I had I wasn't too impressed. When I think of a good bahn mi, I'm thinking of a French bread with a golden crunchy crust. The bread that it was served with was pale. While it was cooked, the bread had the texture of dough. The grilled pork had good flavor but was a bit on the chewier side (a bit over cooked). I did have some concerns on the service. The person making my sandwich used the same pair of gloves. Touching the iPad between making sandwiches, they touched their hair, their hair was not tied all the way and hair hung over the bahn mi as it was being made.

This place is really nice. The food was good and service was nice. I brought an out of town guest with me and they enjoyed their plate as well.

Mini Moi with shrimp (3) $11.75

Our last four to go orders have been way different than pre-pandemic quality. I have emailed the business previously just to let them know because we loved eating at Moi and want them to be around for a long time. I've never ask for or expect a discount or anything. I just wanted to give feedback because we have been eating at Moi from day one and it has been a family favorite. The Mini Moi kid bowl is what my kids always pick. Today they asked for shrimp. It was 3.75 extra. Ok, sure, let's do it. With shrimp, the mini Moi it's $11.75 but you only get three tiny shrimp and that's it (see pic). The bbq pork, beef, chicken and tofu are all very tasty and it's great to have veggie options with warm proteins. We enjoy our bowls. We will continue to support this business because we want them to be around for a long time. I know they struggle with being short staffed as well.

Pork Bahn Mi with the works!

This place is amazing! We've driven by it at least a thousand times but have only just tried it for the first time today. We LOVED their grilled chicken fresh spring rolls, loaded with delicious protein and veggies. The chicken was surprisingly moist and it filled us up quickly, we had trouble eating the main course. Their bahn mi's are huuuuge! I'm so full right now as I'm writing this... (zzz). I'm no expert on bahn mi's but I am very satisfied with our meal. The traditional pork bahn mi with all the toppings came out to be around $6.50, a good deal in my book. I can see ourselves being regulars at this place!

Moi is a great option for great Vietnamese Food but please follow this one recommendation, I would avoid the banh mi. The wife got the banh mi and I got a Vermicelli bowl and an order of egg rolls. My wife is Vietnamese and her main complaint was the banh mi bread. The bread tastes doughy and soft when it is suppose to be more toasted and crispy I thoroughly enjoyed my vermicelli bowl, the pork was super flavorful and I was able to add as many toppings as I wanted. Portions were huge and I left quite satisfied. The egg rolls were kind of cold and stale. I will probably pass on these next time. Going to stick with my go to vermicelli bowl next time. Great portion for a great price.

You can't really call a sandwich banhmi with a bread this pale, it looked like it saw a ghost. Banh mi is notorious for being so crusty it cuts the top of your mouth, so you know this place don't make banh mi. There were also not butter and pate spread, and when asked to add the "traditional toppings" (an option on the menu, not something we created), they put lettuce on there. Lettuce is NOT a banh mi vegetable. I would not have paid the special price of $6 Tuesday specials if I had known this was the standard. Much less the original price, without the Tuesday special. However, the meats were marinated well and though the bread was small, they did stuff it with lots of meats and vegetables so the special price was kind of worth it if you're looking for a sub. Not banh mi though. The moi special sauce was a light lemongrass sauce which is decent for a rice or noodle bowl. Guess the high ratings here speak more about the bowls than the bread. TLDR not a banhmi place but you can try the bowls I guess.

The food was very good here, the chicken was juicy and hot, and I like how you are able to select all of the toppings and sauces you want. I don't think I have been to Vietnamese restaurant that allows you to customize your order as much as you can here, which I enjoy! The egg rolls were very tasty but they weren't the most fresh. Almost everything here was great except the restrooms, which were really dirty.

Grill BBQ Pork with Zucchini Noodles base. Fresh and good as it looks!

For my real viets, don't be too hesitant because I do confirm that they don't skimp out on the traditional Vietnamese ingredients including (sprouts, cilantro, mint, crush peanuts, fried shallots, etc.) I love this place and think it deserves more attention! Stole my business idea! This is a chipotle style Vietnamese grill restaurant. We're talking pick your base (vermicelli noodles, rice, or zucchini noodles), protein (tofu, bbq grills pork, chicken, beef), and vegetable toppings. The portions are HUGE! The pork is still tender and juicy, flavorful but not too powerful. You can tell that you're eating good quality and not thinly chopped up meat that becomes unrecognizable. Vegetables and toppings are fresh, cold and crisp. Fish sauce the right amount - not too sweet not to salty. The owners HAS to be viet! It is a struggle as a Vietnamese American to go on a low carb diet if our grown up pallet is of rice and noodles. The fact that this place offers zucchini noodles is a life saver. The only worry you got now is to portion control yourself . Prior to my date, I tried the vermicelli and it was also great - fresh and springy. If you live or work close by, definitely give it a try. They are quick and can be grab and go option if you're deprived of healthy viet food without the wait and struggling with the Dell Café.... Apparently they offer Pho now which I have yet to try. Holler at me if you try it!

    Veronica R.

Small menu but I liked that. Explained it was my first time and they slowed down the assembly line to assist and explain process. Food had good flavor and enjoyed my meal for the most part. The rice noodles are served cold which I don't like. Rice is hot, why not the noodles? Made what would have been a great meal cold. Please serve hot/warm. Other than that, I loved it.

The waitress checked on us several times. That said, I would not come back here. The noise level was horrendous. The constant scraping of metal chairs on concrete and the echo chamber the tall blank walls and bare metal ceiling causes was equivalent to nails on a chalkboard for the whole meal. Additionally , the music volume was SO high. I think someone went up to talk to them About the noise and the employee just looked like he didn't care , wouldn't look at her and just kept shrugging and making a "what can you do face". I almost asked them to turn the music down too but instead wore noise canceling AirPods my whole meal :-/ it was not an enjoyable experience to be honest and canceled out the other positives i mentioned. Hope they do something about the scrapping chairs in the future. Idk-put rubber caps on them all and have extra to replace them as they inevitably fall off???

The inside was vey inviting and tastefully decorated. We had the Beef Bulgogi Bao, this was really yummy. The bao was soft and delightful. The beef had a sweet bulgogi glaze that worked really well with it. The rest of the toppings added a nice balance without overpowering the meat. My only wish was that it was 4 baos and not two since they are so small. The highlight was the Firecracker Shrimp. Be warned this is not a spicy dish like you might think from the name. The crispy shrimp was crunchy and not soggy at all, it felt pretty clean and not greasy. It came with salad, rice and a spicy soy sauce and it was just so good. With 12 shrimp, it's definitely shareable between 2 people. Lastly we had the Vietnamese iced coffee which was $6. It tasted like Ovaltine and was mostly ice with just a few sips. I wouldn't recommend it unless the cup size is increased or the price is decreased. So overall, it's a bit pricey. The menu was also a little confusing. We checked online prior to coming and they had a lot of stuff but when at the restaurant, there were only a few items listed which caught us off guard. We actually ended up ordering the wrong item (firecracker shrimp when we actually wanted dynamite shrimp, ultimately it worked out cuz it was delicious but the problem still stands). So those are the only cons I can think off. Other than that, The place was fantastic. Did not think Hutto would have a place of this caliber. The clientele here is downscale. The food is downscale. If you are looking for the Elizabeth Street Cafe, it is not here. A lot of the places are fine for what they are. But you have to get yourself into a downscale mentality. * * * Virtually every single truck has built a shack to eat the food in. You are out of the sun. You are in the shade. There is some kind of a breeze - either from an electric fan or cracks in the wall or ceiling. Housing is crude. This is rough eating. More importantly, there is no air conditioning. So it is going to get hot, shade or no shade, fan or no fan. * * * Most of the patrons are Mexican or Central Americans. They are also much much smarter than me. They would show up in their trucks - often a giant pick up truck. Someone would jump down from the passenger side ... Go into a shack ... Get their bag of food ... And take it Home. They were eating in air conditioned comfort. I was the only idiot actually eating in the shacks. I was roasting like a horned frog on a rock That said, I ate like a king I also got a huge lesson in what Vietnamese food is all about. * * * A lot of Vietnamese places are like the food trucks at Parmer and Dessau. Vietnam is hot. Vietnam is humid. Lots of street food is served outside. You eat on a folding chair. Or you eat in a shack similar to what I was eating in. In 105 degrees, things change. * * * a) In air conditioned restaurants, you get raw carrot and raw daikon and raw cucumber on the side. You ignore those and eat your main dish. Out in the shack in 105 degrees, the raw carrots, raw daikon and raw cucumbers were life savers. They were a major contrast with the hot food straight out of the fryer. Never have I enjoyed a raw cucumber so much. b) In an air conditioned restaurant, you ignore the condiments that are served at your table. You leave the Rooster Sauce and the Rice Vinegar alone. Condiments become king in 105 degrees in a shack. I was dipping my raw veggies in rice vinegar or alternatively in chili paste. They were the absolute best part of the meal. c) I will describe the two dishes I had next. Keep in mind this is downscale Vietnamese cooking. Lots of the ingredients are going to come straight out of the freezer. In a brick and mortar air conditioned place, I would be unhappy if I was served food straight from the freezer. In the shack, my meal actually worked. d) One of my two dishes was a lemon salt and pepper fried shrimp. This was straight out of the freezer and almost tasteless by itself. But dipped in chili paste, it was just divine. I chowed down my shrimp quite happily. I was starting to get addicted to that chili paste. e) The other dish was vermicelli with egg roll and grilled pork. Once again, the egg roll was out of the freezer. Once again, rice vinegar and chili paste would be the stars of the show. The pork was what you would expect from an honest but downscale lower class place. The pork was decent enough to eat. (No health violations here.) But it was definitely gristly and fatty. The pork was just acceptable all by itself. It got better - but not amazing - if it was dipped in sauce. f) In 105 degrees, iced Vietnamese coffee is GOD. They serve theirs the old fashioned way where it brews in your tin cup before you pour it over ice. The iced Vietnamese coffee extended by two hours the amount of time I could have sat comfortably in that shack. I wish I had some of that iced Vietnamese coffee right now. * * * If you ate only one Vietnamese meal in Austin, would you want it to be Com Tam Pa Phi? Probably not. Do you want to replicate the experience of eating out on a road somewhere in rural central Vietnam? Com Tam Pa Phi will do you for sure. Can you eat well at Com Tam Pa Phi? I had a great time. But frankly, the Mexicans were more on top of things than I was. If you live anywhere near the corner of Parmer and Dessau, Picking your food up from the food court and eating it in your apartment makes a lot of sense. And in your apartment, you can dip your veggies in anything you want that HEB sells.
