Their matcha doesn't taste like that overly sweet, artificial kind, it was pretty solid. Black sesame was also a hit. So was the brownie. Who knew you could find really good mochi donuts inside a food court? When you first walk into Mitsuwa's food court, Mochill is the first place you'll see. They have a variety of mochi donut flavors ranging from $3- 3.60 a piece or you can get 6 for $18. Their Mango and Strawberry mochi donuts were both very good. They had the perfect texture combination of crispy and chewy. The only thing that needs improvement is their packaging. The donuts were so fresh and sticky that they kept sticking to the paper bag. If you're a coffee person, they serve Honolulu Coffee Company coffee which is awesome. They also have matcha drinks and I got their Iced Mango Matcha ($6.75). You can taste the mango and it was the right amount of sweetness. Definitely stop by if you're in the mood for something sweet. read more

Not the best presentation in a box because the six donuts had a bit of a tight squeeze so the typical round shape was deformed... but flavor is decent. This mochi donut stand is part of the mini food court in the Mitsuwa Store in Irvine (I call it "Little Mitsuwa"). They sell 18 flavors of mochi donuts as well as some coffee drinks and soft serve. I've noticed this place on my frequent trips to shop in Mitsuwa over the past couple years and on this particular day decided to give them a try. I ordered an iced Hawaiian Latte plus two mochi donuts. I've not been much of a fan of mochi donuts in the past so stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered two with more than just a flavored glaze: a cinnamon crunch and also a fruity pebbles. Both of the cereal-topped mochi donuts were okay. The crunchy toppings provided nice texture with the fruity pebbles adding more flavor than the rather bland cinnamon crunch. The donuts themselves were dense, slightly chewy, and overall pretty good. I still prefer a normal doughnut. The iced latte was made with coffee from the Honolulu Coffee Company which had excellent flavor. It was mixed with coconut milk. The nice woman I ordered it from told me something about macadamia nut too but if there was any macadamia flavoring in the latte I couldn't detect it. Regardless, it was quite tasty. read more

The staff were friendly and they had a variety of 15 types of mochi donuts which made it so hard for me to choose! I ended up with a dozen box of assorted donuts. Tried this at the Taste of Japan event a few weeks ago when they had a booth. Probably one of the only and best looking dessert booths at the event! We got the banana salted caramel crepe on the way out for the 1 hr drive home but that was a mistake. It was incredibly hot out and it was melting in SECONDS. I had whipped cream and it's not very "eater friendly" lol. It's wrapped in a very tight paper cone thing and you can't really unwrap it in a good way because then the whole thing just falls apart. The bottom was already soggy from whatever cream seeped through. We basically just had to gobble it up in the messiest way possible. The Mochi was towards the bottom but it was very good. It's been awhile since my last visit here and I think they renovated? It looked nice and modern in any case. To be honest I was actually waiting for my ramen order when my eyes and legs wandered here. My family has always liked their mochi donuts; the calories are ok when one shares, right? Right? Ok now that I get the calorie guilt over with... So their mochi donut options are great, and the taste and consistency are appreciated. I don't know what prompted the change in packaging (hopefully didn't cause any increase in price?) but I felt like the expression on hubs face when he saw me carrying the box home was worth it ha. Finally, a mochi donut place that's comparable to Fill Bakeshop! Their mochi donut is consistent is pretty spot on! And the same for their flavors, it's detectable and delectable! It's located inside the Mitsuwa Market off Culver drive, where the parking lot is a hit and miss with availability. Service: pretty much got serviced immediately as it wasn't busy at the time (this was around 430pm-ish, they close by 7pm). She was nice and helped me with my selections. I'd love to try one of each if I could but that is definitely not possible. I opted for a few flavors and try one of their malasadas. Pricing isn't horrible, it's about right for the sizing and taste. Mochi donuts: LOVED their matcha flavor, it wasn't too strong but the perfect amount of that tea flavor. Mochi consistancy is right! Chewy inside whole being slightly soft and still maintaining the slight fried crunch on the outside. NOW that's a mochi donut. Also their black sesame was DIVINE! I'd get those again and the other flavors to try! Malasadas: I got their Strawberry and loved how the texture was still a slight crunch since it was dipped in strawberry coating. I had ulterior motives for coming here. I needed napkins. I bought this titanic sushi boat from Mitsuwa, and they give you chopsticks but no napkins. Walking up to the counter, I was thinking, "Wow, Modo Hawaii changed a lot." They never made Cronuts or Cream Puffs before. There was definitely no display case before either since they made donuts to order. Something was off, but I still needed napkins. I got the Salted Caramel Mochi Donut and helped myself to 5 of those super thin, nearly-sheer napkins. I think the worker gave me a sideways glance. I don't care. Yay, napkins! Although not fresh out of the fryer, the donut wasn't dry and had a nice chew. I like my mochi donuts more on the mochi side, and this was it. The icing was okay- thick and sweet, didn't taste the salty part. Price was sorta steep at $3.60. Workers were slow to the counter, even though they had a clear view of the queue. The people in front of me stood a good minute before being helped. They should just install a self-order kiosk if workers don't like to be pulled from other tasks. I don't like to distract them either. It wasn't until I got home and Yelped that I realized Modo Hawaii had closed down forever. So where was I, and what did I eat? It's like one of those horror movies where you visit a normal-looking house then later found out it had been abandoned for years. Chilling. Turns out that Mochill Donuts & Coffee had taken over the same spot. Though it was a good donut, it's disappointing they don't make them fresh like Modo used to. After having lunch at the food court here I stopped by this place to pick up some desserts to go. They have a lot of different options and flavors, but I went with my gut and got some of my basic favorites. I just got a couple of mochi donuts, one matcha green tea and one black sesame flavored. Service was quick and easy, I loved the little box my donuts came in. I ate them later that night and they had stayed fresh in the box. The donuts were chewy and had an even glaze. I preferred the black sesame flavor as it is my favorite. It had that great nutty taste with a hint of sweetness. Very rarely do I crave donuts but for some reason this morning, I couldn't stop thinking of donuts. I found this place on yelp and thought I would give it a try. Matcha is my favorite flavor ever so I specifically came here to try the matcha. A couple of things you should know: 1) it is inside the Mitsuwa Market. You walk inside and you see it right away, straight in front of you. Parking is easy! 2) There is a difference between mochi donuts and regular donuts if you don't already know. Mochi is more chewy and bread-y. 3) Pricing was not awful. A mochi donut was $3. The other fancy stuffed varied. THEYRE CASHLESS. 4) It is REALLY sweet. Hence the 4 stars. I love sweet but I couldn't even finish my donut because my teeth were aching (and I don't even have cavities lol). The donut itself is sweet and when you add on stuff and creams, it gets too much for me. 5) The flavor of the matcha and strawberry were really good, if you could separate the sweetness from the flavor. I loved both the matcha and black sesame donuts. They were very chewy - even more so than the ones from Mochinut. My only complain is that it's a bit too sweet for me. It's not as sweet as most American donuts, but with mochi donuts I prefer very subtle sweetness. It's expensive at $3 per donut but I still recommend it. It's located in the Culver Irvine Marketplace and so the parking can be a bit of a challenge. All the baked goodies, including the mochisada and the malasadas, are what caught my attention but when I immediately saw the drink menu, I got distracted. There are so many that I wanted to try. I chose the Hawaiian Latte. The drink was made pretty quick and it totally hit the spot. Got a little taste of paradise. Customer service was warm with great attitudes! This review is long overdue! I got donuts here for a Yelp elite event awhile back. I had never heard of it before, but was familiar with the shopping center it was located in. I didn't realize it was in a grocery store/food court (in case you're like me and get lost). Because of this, they also aren't open super early like most donut shops FYI. These are not your usual donuts, they are mochi! They are much different in texture and more chewy. I got the strawberry crunch, matcha, and strawberry cronut. I always order matcha anything and I think I've started to accept that matcha just isn't for me. I didn't like the flavor and this donut was much chewier than the strawberry crunch - which I highly recommend. I loved this one! My husband's favorite was the strawberry cronut. Had a great impromptu 1st visit here on a recent weekend. This was only my 2nd time trying mochi donuts and I definitely liked Mochill's better. They had an amazing selection at this location inside a Japanese grocery store. My daughter treated herself to a strawberry matcha which she really enjoyed, and she treated us both to the regular glazed mochi donuts. I liked that the donut was fresh and soft, yet firm, and glazed on both sides. And, it was not greasy/didn't leave an oily aftertaste at all (which was my problem at the first mochi donut place I ever tried). I was pleasantly surprised with each "donut" and loved it. The cronut was perfectly crispy and flakey with just the right amount of light sweetness. The big strawberry mochi donut ball (I honestly forgot the name it was something unique sorry lol) was huge and just a big mochi donut ball filled with some type of filling. It wasn't anything too spectacular but I think I enjoy this form of mochi donut over the "beads" kind. The lemon meringue was also pleasant with a balanced tart and creamy filling. Again, it was really nice that it wasn't too overly sweet which is usually what a lot of other donuts and desserts are. Each of these were 5 bucks and at first I was going to say it's not worth it but after trying these, honestly, I might come back if I ever stop by Mitsuwa again.
