I absolutely LOVE Hui Lau Shan! My favorite is hands down the mango and coconut juice with aloe jelly... it's SOOOO good! It's sweet, refreshing, and especially perfect on a hot day. I could seriously drink this all the time! I reallllly wish they would open one closer to me, like in Cerritos, Los Angeles, or even Westminster. It's a little bit of a drive all the way to Irvine, but honestly, it's worth it because this is probably my favorite mango dessert spot! The place itself is small and cute, with only a few seats inside, but they also have outdoor seating. Service is great. You're in and out. They don't take long preparing your order. Every time I go there, my order is on point and everything always comes out delicious. Parking is plentiful, which is always a plus. Naturally, this seemed like an appropriate time for dessert. Hui Lau Shan is a Hong Kong-based dessert chain heavily devoted to mango, which is immediately apparent from the display case filled with glossy dessert mannequins identified by little tags like "J3 Pomelo & Mango with Sago." The place knows its constituency. If mango is your religion, this is at minimum a chapel. The Irvine location itself is remarkably unpretentious: cracked, slightly sticky-looking concrete floors, deafening music that sounded approximately 15 years past its cultural sell-by date, and a youthful crowd containing several people whose legs appeared skinnier than my fingers. I felt less like a customer and more like an archaeological specimen temporarily admitted for observation. Being the radical nonconformist that I am, I came to a mango dessert shop and ordered the watermelon with coconut jelly. On a hot Irvine day, it was excellent -- cold, clean, refreshing and just sweet enough. 5/5. The little yellow Hui Lau Shan spoon, complete with cheerful fruit-headed mascot, provided an additional level of emotional support I did not know dessert utensils were capable of. The mango chunks were good but not too sweet. The mango pudding, mango ice cream and coconut milk lacked distinct flavors. We've had the same dessert at Hui Lau Shan in Hong Kong as well as other Asian dessert specialty shops in OC...the one at Hui Lau Shan Irvine just does not taste right. I'll never forgive them for leaving the 626. Insane that this is the only SoCal location left. But I guess that make sense since there's so much competition there in terms of Asian desserts and some late night spots versus the OC which doesn't have that much due to being a suburban hellscape (no offense). 30 minutes before close, this place was popping on a Saturday night. There was a line the entire time we were there and all of the seats inside were taken, as well as most of the ones that were outside, but service is super efficient and on it. From ordering to preparing and packaging our desserts, it happened relatively quickly. I miss the Rowland Heights location with the cute yellow decor and the characters all over it, since this is a smaller shop and the characters are only on one small side of the counter wall. You do get a Yogurtland-esque spoon with the mango mascot and the other mascots are on their to go bags as well. There's food models of some of their desserts and they show what type of mango is in season and that they're serving currently. Menu is what I remember from the other locations before closure. Since we were already full from dinner, I staved off from getting the jumbo chewy mango ball dessert that I always get and each of us decided to get a drink and get the Mango Romance to try a bit of everything. Deliciously sweet mangos without any of the tartness or stringiness from lower quality ones. Yummy variety of all sorts of desserts and all of our drinks, leaned more towards the dessert side, but yummy nonetheless. They don't skimp out on the mangos nor the toppings, which is great. The employee working the counter was awesome explaining some of their desserts. I ended up going with their Mango and Coconut Sago drink which was great. Perfectly sweet. All mango lovers need to come here immediately (or don't, I'd love to keep this to myself). One of my absolute favorite desserts in Irvine with such reasonable prices. My go-to is the mango chewy ball A4 I don't know every single ingredient but it's basically a scoop of mango ice cream with thicker tapioca chewy balls (reminds me of Filipino Bilog Bilog), mango pieces that taste so ripe, and then the puree on the bottom. A beautifully, refreshing dessert for the same price as 1 coffee, haha. An honorable mention are the mango pancakes. Such a soft crepe-like pancake filled with a cream. They are known for their famous mango Asian desserts but also have a variety of desserts in taro, black sesame, coconut, etc. too. I came here for their mango mochi balls (comes in a 6 pack) which is absolutely a (5/5)! They are about an inch wide and tall which is different from the big round ones size of your palms you may see in NYC. It was dusted in light coconut flakes which were perfect added texture to the outer chewy mango mochi. Inside when I bit in, you are met with fresh, sweet mango! I loved the combo together which was refreshing, not too sweet, and the perfect bouncy mochi consistency bite. I managed to eat 4 of these by myself because they were that good and bite size! They are known for their mango desserts, esp the 楊枝甘露 and they have added other Hong Kong snacks and drink such as bubble waffle and red bean ice dessert. The price is a little high for desserts. My sister ordered it for me so I'm not sure which number that was. All I know was it was good and refreshing. The mango topping was fresh and the aloe green jelly strings were fun to eat. Two of my sisters also had the same dessert as mine (they recommended it) and my other sister had a different kind with a pink liquid, not sure what that was.
