I finally tried Indigo Cow after seeing posts about in on social media, and it was pretty good! They had plenty of great options for toppings, and I ordered the Hokkaido Milk in a cup with soybean powder, brown sugar syrup, and warabi mochi. Honestly, I feel like there's better options at Hmart if you're looking for ice cream with things like red bean paste or warabi mochi. Firstly, this shop is located inside of a ramen shop, so we sat outside. There's one countertop and two waiting chairs outside of the restaurant, which was nice. However, when it came to the ice cream, when we got ours, it was already a bit melted, which I found disappointing. My friend's immediate reaction was that the flavor was not very similar to the flavor in Japan, which is unfortunate because this ice cream comes at the elevated price of $7.00 with toppings for a small because of its "Hokkaido Milk" flavors. It was definitely still enjoyable, but there's many ice cream places nearby that are stronger at this price point.
Delicious Hokkaido milk ice cream located inside a ramen store. No indoor seating but some small outdoor seating outside the restaurant. The ice cream had a soft serve consistency. The flavor was really mild with a subtle sweetness but I liked that the toppings added more flavor.
Indigo Cow is located inside the Ramen Tatsunoya in Costa Mesa. It's just a stand with a tablet for you to place your order. There's no seating inside, just a couple of handful of chairs outside. We ordered a small Hokkaido Milk with MBR (mochi, brown sugar syrup and roasted soybean powder). The ice cream was nice and creamy and the mochi was very soft. I'm not a mochi fan, so I probably would have been better off without it since it didn't have much flavor (though I did like the texture). It is expensive. A small cup is $4.50, with an extra $2 for the MBR. With tax, it's $7 (before tip). A Mixue opened near me, and while the ice cream is much better at Indigo Cow, it's hard for me to justify spending almost 4 times as much on ice cream. Would not go out of my way, but if I'm back in the area, I might stop by and try their matcha soft serve.
Ice cream, actually soft serve from Hokkaido, Japan. Need I say more? The milk flavor is the one to get. We got milk and green tea flavors, in the black sesame waffle cone. There is no shop, you just order from the cashier inside a ramen shop, Ramen Tatsunoya. It is SO good!
I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. The ice cream itself was good but I've definitely had more rich/milky ice cream in Hokkaido itself. The toppings were great and unlike myself, I actually wish they had put more. Loved the soy bean powder and brown sugar glaze. Mochi had great texture but wasn't sweetened. Which is fine because the ice cream itself is sweet. Got it in a cone which I think was black sesame flavor but regardless, complimented the ice cream very well.
So happy Indigo Cow has a location closer to where I live! Don't get me wrong, I loved visiting the Echo Park location, but the Costa Mesa location is so much more convenient. Ample parking, super easy to order and quick to get my ice cream! This location isn't a standalone, it's within a ramen shop. At first, I was a bit confused, but upon my visit, I realized how easy it is to get my ice cream! They take your order right at the front and quickly bring it out to you. I was pleased with how efficient this was. Staff was friendly as well. The ice cream itself is soooo smooth and creamy. It isn't heavy and tastes clean. I am a big fan of Indigo Cow already, so I was happy with this location being consistent. I can't wait to come back! So glad it opened when it did so I can visit all throughout summer!

But I think the mochi price and the toppings is a bit steep, you get 4 pieces of mochi and some powder on top at an extra price of 3 dollars, the ice cream with the mochi comes out around 8 dollars. The service was fast and the lady taking my order was very kind. It's inside a ramen shop so there's a little kiosk to take orders and you wait outside for it.
Went during their soft opening. The register is tucked inside the ramen shop, just to the right of the entrance. Ordering was easy, and they brought the soft serve out to us. There were a couple of chairs outside, but most people just stood or walked around the plaza. Ngl, the soft serve was pretty mid for the price. It wasn't especially rich or creamy, and the matcha flavor was really lacking. Without the MBR topping (dango, brown sugar syrup, and kinako), it would've been a pretty sad cup of soft serve. Maybe my expectations were too high for a place that advertises milk from Japan, or maybe they were still missing toppings like yuzu salt during the soft opening. Either way, I'm glad I didn't make the drive to LA for this.
I am sooo happy there's an Indigo Cow location that's not in LA and semi-close to me! I had to get my Hokkaido soft serve with MBR and it tasted just as good as the first time I had it. My only note is I wish they added more soybean powder to my ice cream, especially because I ordered a Regular. But other than that, it was so good and I can't wait to make the trek to OC and have it again :)
Do the cows in Hokkaido know about this ice cream?? -- one star purely for the sweet server. Soft serve was extremely icy, nothing near the buttery-creamy-richness I am told Hokkaido dairy is. Even when disregarding the origin of the milk, I've had powder soft serve mixes that have been so much better. At this price level point, consider going elsewhere for dessert.
The cone was good but the ice cream tasted like regular vanilla. wasn't as creamy as I was expecting it to be either. Mochi balls were hard and had no flavor or filling.
It was just ok. Indigo cow is inside the ramen spot. I got the Hokkaido milk + MBR and it came out to over $9. Definitely has different flavors than a regular ice cream place but I Can't say I would come back here
Glad to see Indigo Cow closer to home but a bit bummed out that it was only a collab and not their standalone place. Since it is a collab with the main ramen restaurant, your option for seating is just a couple of high chairs and a single table outdoor. You order directly at the register by the front door and the selection is pretty much the same from other Indigo locations in LA. The waitress that took our order was friendly and service was pretty quick. I got the Swirl (half Hokkaido and half Matcha) MBR, it was pretty creamy but the matcha flavor wasn't strong enough and was on the sweeter side for me; however, because of the mochi and the warabimochi - it made the whole ice cream much more enjoyable. Hopefully they'll be able to expand in the future to having their own space and having more seatings available for their guests. Attentive service - I'd describe as a pop-up in a ramen store though really it's a separate cashless terminal when you enter. Yummy soft serve milk flavor which to me is light (not vanilla flavored!) I had mine with the most popular topping combo - mochi balls, brown sugar syrup, and some roasted soybean powder. Expect super subtle flavors - the best compliment is "yumm not too sweet"! my first time trying indigo cow and i'm glad i didn't have to drive all the way to LA! i got the hokkaido milk with MBR (mochi, brown sugar syrup, and roasted soy bean powder) and it was heavenly. so creamy and the mochi was so chewy!! this location is in a small ramen restaurant, and they take your order at the front. i went around 8 pm so there was no wait. service is great and they bring out your ice cream pretty fast! will definitely come back!! read more

This spot is located inside a ramen shop and wasn't busy and service was super quick. The hokkaido flavor was light and refreshing and the matcha was light and a little tangy. There's a little seating outside to eat. read more

SO YUMMY. Get the larger size (it's called regular) one person could easily eat it all :) the mochi is rly good and soft. No seating for indigo cow except 1 table and 2 chairs outside. No line 8 pm on a Thurs, and it came out in like 2 mins read more

TL;DR: A hidden gem of a soft-serve spot located right inside a restaurant. The Hokkaido milk soft serve is incredibly refreshing and not overly sweet, and the fresh, chewy mochi topping is an absolute must-try. We actually saw this ice cream spot on TikTok and knew we had to give it a try. Finding it was a little confusing at first because it's located right inside a restaurant, functioning almost like a pop-up shop. The cashier who helped us mentioned they'd only been set up there for a couple of months. On the bright side, parking in the plaza is super easy with plenty of spots. If you end up eating at the restaurant inside--which I believe was a ramen place--having this ice cream right there for dessert sounds like the perfect setup. The ice cream itself was amazing and, most importantly, it wasn't extremely sweet, which is exactly what I love. We decided to get the swirl so we could try both, and while both were really good, the Hokkaido milk flavor was definitely my favorite over the matcha. For the topping, we went with the MBR combo, which includes mochi, brown sugar, and roasted soybean powder. The mochi was incredible--you could easily tell it was made fresh, and they give you a generous portion of I think it was 4 pieces. If I'm back in the area, I'd definitely stop by again for a refreshing, high-quality treat! read more

I need to preface that the hokkaido ice cream is pretty good, and I enjoyed the flavor that I got. The main reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because the service was really disappointing. Indigo Cow is in the same building as Ramen Tatsunoya and there were other parties inside eating their restaurant options. They have a hostess desk, and a separate register at the front for the ice cream. This was my first time going so when I was at the front, there was a hostess/server who asked how many and I explained that I was here to order the ice cream. They did explain that the register on the right is for the ice cream and I did get a menu for the flavor options and toppings. After a few minutes of looking at the menu, I told the hostess/server at the front that I was ready to order, but they told me that a different employee, an older asian woman who I'm assuming was the owner or manager, would be ringing me up. They tell the asian woman from the hostess desk so she can ring up my order, however, the asian woman was busy clearing out dishes from a table, and asked the hostess/server to ring me up instead. I wasn't sure if they were inputting an order for a dine-in table that had just ordered, but after the asian woman instructed them to take my order they went to go take my order. I found that experience a little awkward - I would've been okay if I was told "oh just give me a moment as I finish ringing this up" or "oh we have a separate employee who rings up the ice cream and she'll be with you in a few moments." I then ordered a small Hokkaido Milk Ice Cream with MBR which came out to $7, and I sat at the one table they have right outside their door to wait since I had only ordered ice cream. I've worked as a server at a restaurant before, so I didn't mind waiting while they took care of their tables, it was only them two out and I did see them bring dishes out to tables. I think what disappointed me is that some minutes later, a couple comes in to order ice cream - they were rung up and immediately got their ice cream. Another family comes in to look at the menu to order the ice cream, but since I haven't gotten mine yet I wanted to ask if it was ready yet. Unfortunately the asian woman thought I was trying to order ice cream and asked me to wait in line - so the hostess never informed her that I had an order, and I had to explain to her that I was waiting & already purchased. I will take accountability for this next part - the asian woman did ask for my name & went back to look for my order on their screen in the kitchen, she comes to ask me (which I now realize - she asked me if it was the strawberry sauce one) which I said yes. She gives me a hokkaido ice cream with just strawberry sauce and I took it, said thank you, and left. Again, I will take accountability for not letting them know that I actually ordered the ice cream with MBR, but there were more people coming in to order, and I didn't want to make them any more busier. Again, the quality of the ice cream is great. It's really creamy, the strawberry sauce isn't too sweet, there wasn't too much of that sauce and it does not overpower the hokkaido milk ice cream - it was a really good balance. However, for $7 it's really expensive (which forsure isn't the actual price of it - again, I did not receive what I actually ordered but that's on me), BUT worth trying if you're in the area. I do hope they improve their service or team communication though. I apologize if it seemed like I was upset but I swear it was confusion & anxiety because I genuinely don't know what happened - if my order was never received in the kitchen, was given to the couple accidentally, or never made. Again, I understand it could've been busy for them at the time that I came in & if they needed to prioritize their dine-in patrons - but not receiving a proper explanation of the ordering process, having someone take my order but not communicating that to other team members or managers in case they have to do something else, and then not getting the right item was a really disappointing experience. read more
