Every time I stop by I try something new from Yu Cake, but every time, I haven't been impressed by my purchase despite the steep price tag. I wouldn't say the cakes are extremely expensive, but Yu Cake's desserts have not impressed us. We got the jasmine matcha yogurt millefeuille, taro box cake, the coconut milk jelly and the black sesame latte. Jasmine matcha yogurt millefeuille - 2/5 clearly a victim of too many flavors jammed together. The only thing that we could really taste was the yogurt Taro box cake - 3.5/5 not too bad but nothing super impressive. I did like that it wasn't too sweet, but a fluffy whipped cream may have made the cake lighter vs the buttercream they used Coconut milk jelly - 4/5 not bad at all. The milk flavor was a bit stronger than the coconut flavor tho Black Sesame latte - 4.5/5 I enjoyed this latte and found it to be the perfect amt of sweet. The black Sesame paste on the side of the cup wasnt sweetened either, ensuring the latte wasn't too heavy. read more

Yu Cake is an upscale dessert shop located just outside the Saks Fifth Avenue front entrance on the lower level of South Coast Plaza. Prices are expensive but the cakes are refined and delicious. They make excellent mille crepe cakes (as good as Lady M, seriously!) and they are available in many flavors. Shown in the picture here is my top favorite - the Tiramisu. Matcha and hazelnut chocolate are also very good. Their newest additions are yogurt mille crepe cakes, which I have yet to try - which give me good reasons to come back and indulge myself again! There are plenty of fruity teas to go with your dessert such as peach, strawberry, grapefruit, and my favorite, lychee. This is located right next to Saks, and there's both indoor seating as well as seats outside the store in the main mall. Overall, was quite disappointed since the cake flavors were not strong at all. I got the hazelnut cake and the yogurt matcha and both flavors were very subtle. Good thing is the cakes were not too sweet, but there really wasn't much kick to it either. The yogurt matcha had more yogurt taste and really no matcha. The hazelnut itself also didnt have a strong hazelnut flavor. Yu Cakes is located inside South Coast Plaza and right across from Macy's Men. I came to Yu Cakes to try out their Mille Crepe Cakes. Inside the dessert shop was nicely designed and clean, and gave a luxury feel. I got three slices: matcha, hazelnut and tiramisu. And here is my breakdown of these three cakes: 1) Matcha Mille Crepe: The crepe cake lacked sweetness and felt a bit bland. I could definitely taste the matcha, but it didn't have a strong tea flavor or any sweetness to it. The cake felt dense and I could not feel the texture of the crepe layers. It felt like I was eating a mousse cake, but not as dense as a cheesecake, but it was definitely close to it. 2) Hazelnut Mille Crepe Cake: This cake was sweeter, but it had the same issue. Felt dense and could not feel the texture or layers of the crepe, felt more like a mousse cake. 3) Tiramisu Mille Crepe Cake: This cake was probably the best out of the three. I'm not sure what they did this one, but I could actually feel like I was eating a mille crepe cake. Flavor was good and I can actually taste and feel the layers of the crepe cakes. Also these mille crepe cakes are not cheap and are on the more expensive side at $11 to $12 a slice. I do share in the same opinion that customer service isn't at the top here, the staff don't seem to greet you as you enter. What is one big positive, I would day is they have a great variety of flavors for their mille crepe cakes and they do have other types of cakes. It's unfortunate as I expected a lot more from here given the price point and it seems they fall short. Overall, it wasn't the best mille crepe cake I have had, but if you want to try, get their tiramisu mille crepe cake if I had to recommend something, but I don't think it was that amazing that I'd personally come back. read more

I'm a dessert person and I know I'm in a good dessert shop when I struggle to make a choice. This place had SO many kinds of cheesecake and some interesting boxed desserts. I love floral flavors and berries so I struggled to choose between rose cheesecake, rose/oolong milk based boxed dessert, and a blueberry cheesecake. Wonderful little cafe at the SaksFifth corner of SouthCoastPlaza. Clean area, comfortable but limited seating. I enjoy coming here on Wednesdays or Thursdays when the crowds are minimal. The wkends are a zoo here. Service is excellent. Both the guy and girl servers (I'm guessing they're the owners) are very welcoming and helpful with the menu. I've tried all their drinks already and the watermelon refresher is THE BEST!! Not too sweet but incredibly refreshing, made with REAL watermelon. I've bought more than a dozen of these perfect drinks and every single time , it was a perfect choice. :) Another yummy drink is the UBE/purple yam "milk drink" --sooo YUMMY creamy, made with real Taro/ube paste. The Soybean Mochi coffee was nice too.....not too sweet, which is greatly appreciated (compared to other coffee shops). If you want a guilty pleasure drink, get the Yogurt Mango drink--delish! It's dessert in drink form. But my fave treat here is the MangoGrapefruit Mochi Jar. I made this my birthday cake because it was so darn yummy! :) and of course we cannot leave this place without buying several tins of the Salted EggYolk ChewyCubes. Stopped by Yu Cake a few days ago with a craving for something sweet. I wasn't familiar with their concept but the desserts in the display looked too good to pass up. I tried the Ube Box. It had a beautiful presentation but the flavor wasn't quite for me. My husband, on the other hand, went all in with two cheesecakes (no judgment, he's got a serious sweet tooth ). Disappointed... You can barely taste the flavor of the cakes. "Not too sweet..." but in a bad way. Rose oolong cream cheese box cake -- could not taste the rose nor the oolong.
