There are alot of mixed reviews about this place... you either hate it or love it. First off the inside and outdoor patio is gorgeous. So open yet still warm and welcoming. It's a very aesthetic place to have breakfast/brunch. You order first at the counter and then find your own seat. They have an extensive menu that ranges from coffee and teas to pastries and brunch items. Everything looks very appealing and picturesque and I hoped the food was as tasty as they looked. Especially considering how steep the prices are... The banana bread latte was tasty but with a subtle banana flavor and strong notes of cinnamon more than anything. I also did get this less sweet so that could have affected the strength of the flavor. The sourdough croissant had that signature tangy flavor but be warned the texture is not like a traditional croissant at all. It is dense and bread-like rather than flakey. I found it interesting to say the least. Also do note that they refuse to heat up pastries here. I understand charging a premium when there are these beneficial claims (seed oil free, refined sugar free, in house milled flour, etc) attached to it but I personally don't think the prices justify the claims nor taste. Truly don't understand the hype this place gets. I came here after hearing many great things about their pastries, especially their cinnamon rolls, so I figured I'd give them a try. Could not be more disappointed. -Cinnamon Roll: Man oh man was this dry. Probably one of the worst cinnamon rolls I've ever had. I came in a little bit before noon on a Friday and they only had a handful of them left on display. Went straight home to warm it up and it was as if these had been left out on the counter for 3 days. The dough was not chewy or plush like you'd expect. The frosting stayed pretty stiff compared to classic cinnamon rolls. The flavor profile was OVERWHELMINGLY sour. Like I get having cream cheese frosting which typically adds some tang to any cinnamon roll but both the dough and the icing were far tooooo tart. Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this type of cinnamon roll but this was an immediate no for me. Tried to pass it off to my family and everyone said no thanks after trying one bite. Don't get this unless you like sour and dry cinnamon rolls. -Chocolate Croissant: I think croissants are an excellent way to judge the skill of a pastry shop. Unfortunately, this one was also very telling. I don't see this often when it comes to bakeries that are suppose to specialize in making bread and pastries, but man the croissant was flat and hollow?! After my disappointing cinnamon roll, I only wanted to try half of the croissant in case it was also not good so I cut it in half and warmed it up. You would have thought I bought a hot pocket lol. This croissant had large gaping holes and extremely poor lamination. No discernable flakey layers which is exactly what you want from a croissant. Since they also use the sourdough base for this pastry, it also lends a very pronounced sour taste to the croissant, but that's hardly an issue, all things considered. The shop and parking: The saving graces for this bakery is the interior and patio areas were cute. Staff were also nice. Parking is not good. There are about 8 spots out front, 4 on the left and 4 on the right. They don't connect to each other because the sidewalk starts immediately in front so if you see a spot open on the other side, you have to exit the lot and re-enter because there's no thru road. The back side has some additional parking but many of the spots are reserved for the other businesses and all of them were taken as well. Overall: I spent $17 for 2 poorly made pastries. As others have mentioned, the prices here are high. I am skeptical of places like this where the prices are high and not worth it. While I don't think that their food and drinks fully justify the high cost, it was pretty good overall. I love the ambiance and decor of this place. It's a neutral, modern design that I absolutely love. I enjoyed just sitting and spending time slowly eating my food and drinking my latte while taking in how nice this place looked! The Roasted Chicken Pesto ($24), while pricey, was a decently sized sandwich that filled my hubby and me up. The Bread Basket ($5) was much more affordable considering how pricey everything else was. I'm a huge fan of sourdough, so I had to try the bread basket that offered me a taste of their sourdough and baguette. They definitely have a tang to their sourdough, but not as tangy as I had hoped (I like them real sour). Service was great from all the staff members - friendly! I really like this place. Their sourdough, loves, cinnamon rolls, chausson aux pommes (they don't have them anymore) were all excellent. You see everything is made with quality, and with a constant turn around of house made product. It is a cute and quaint spot with limited parking. We came here on a Sunday afternoon, ordered the benedict (perfect poached eggs, hollandaise pretty good), the egg sandwich (on croissant), and the breakfast wrap. The breakfast wrap really surprised me because it was wrapped in a crepe. Very good and tasty. Lattes and coffee are excellent quality. It's not often that I feel a business who does super well should be at 4 stars instead of 5, but I would say for how small this place is, the service is just okay, and I think the prices are quite high for certain things. If you read a negative review about Eller Bakery, they're trying to gate keep. Everything about this coffee shop/bakery combo is A1. Eller Bakery had been in my bookmarks for months, but I only recently ventured deep enough into Costa Mesa to experience it first hand. And I have to say.. this might be my favorite Costa Mesa coffee shop. Eller Bakery truly does it all. Their baked goods are made fresh daily, their coffee menu is dialed in, and they're stacked in the seating department. I know this place is known for its cinnamon rolls, but I came on a Sunday around noon, and they ran out, so my review is not for the cinnamon rolls. TLDR: Only come here if you LOVE sourdough. I wanted to like this place because there aren't that many cute pastry focused places in the OC, but this place was a miss for me :/ It's sourdough everything, and the sourdough taste is VERY apparent. And through this experience, I learned I do not like sourdough as much as I thought...I tried 3 pastries (carrot cake, coffee cake, and a croissant), and each of them were dry and tasted sour(dough) to me. Although pretty, the flavors and chewy texture of the pastries were not working for me. I also got a matcha latte (and the only non-dairy milk option was this almond-like milk). Definitely passs on the drink. It tasted super watery. I was so sad because I spent $50 in total on the order, and I didn't enjoy a single thing. Unfortunately the service was also a miss for me. We ordered the pastries for dine in and they said they would bring it to us. It took them 10 minutes to bring to us already made pastries and another 5 after that to bring me my latte. When you get in, you order at the counter and you will be asked if you would like outdoor or indoor seating, in which there is plenty both indoor and outdoor. The outdoor seating is really nice as they have planted trees outside which provide partial shade. This bakery has pastries, breakfast, and a lunch menu. I will say for the pastries they will run out; if you want pastries you can go at an earlier time. I went in 2 hours before closing and they only had one type of pastry left. I ordered the two eggs plate and the omelette. I enjoyed both of the plates, especially the potatoes they come with. I wish they had more potatoes as they were my favorite. The outside of the potato is crunchy and the inside is soft and savory. I do feel that the eggs weren't seasoned enough but I personally like heavy seasoning. We also bought a mango smoothie and a strawberry smoothie. The drinks were a bit more expensive as these two bottles cost about 17-18 together. The strawberry smoothie was super delicious but the mango smoothie was a bit disappointing. I'm not sure if it was just my bottle or if the smoothie was supposed to be like that, but it hardly tasted like mango and had a weird taste- I took two sips and had to throw the bottle away. I was sort of scared to stop by on a sunday morning because I thought it was going to be packed but quite honestly, it wasn't too bad. They are known for their banana bread latte which I can confirm is really good! I am one of those people who like creamer with a splash of coffee but quite honestly this wasn't as sweet as i expected it to be. The potatoes, in my opinion, were the star of the meal! They were so good, perfectly seasoned (almost steeped in herby oil), crispy yet soft inside. My dining companion also ordered the banana bread latte, which she really liked. I was a little disappointed there was no chai tea latte on the menu (it is my designated drink), but that is alright. I'm a sucker for a beautiful pastry case, so seeing all the breads and pastries was a delight. The interior is very minimalist and clean. As foodies who value high quality ingredients over everything else, we were thrilled to find somewhere that uses organic ingredients and even mills their own flour! A month ago we started milling our own flour at home and realized how hard it is, and how short the shelf life is, which made us appreciate Eller even more! Recently we came in for breakfast (which runs us $100+ for a family of 4) and asked Mickey (the guy in charge up front) if ALL of their pastries use fresh milled flour to which he responded "Yes everything uses fresh milled flour. This is the healthiest place you'll eat." Something was weird the way he said it though...he sounded almost defensive. Then we were eating outside and we saw a bunch of 25lb bags of flour stacked inside through the window. Obviously those were not fresh milled (and they didnt even say organic). Something smelled off. The next week we came in again, this time we were determined to get answers. We asked the cashier when they run the giant flour mill that's displayed next to the register. He said usually at night, but it wasn't working right now. Then we asked if they use 100% fresh milled flour in their pastries, to which he replied "Yes, everything up here uses freshly milled flour." Hmmmm. Then we asked if the mill isn't working, how are they getting all the fresh milled flour? He started stuttering, thinking what to say, then said they get the flour from someone else who's milling it for them. Oh ok... Then we asked about the giant stack of 25lb bags of flour sitting behind him, and he starting stuttering even more, then finally said "Well...not everything uses fresh milled flour. There are some changes going on right now. Only the items that say 'Heritage' use fresh flour" (which was 3 of the 12 or so items on display). We asked if these were short term changes and if they would go back to fresh milled flour to which he replied "No, these changes are permanent. That's all I can say right now. Sorry." So....TWO different employees lied to us about the ingredients they're using. Obviously the 2nd person had been coached on what to say. Now we are wondering how long this has been going on, and if they were ever using 100% fresh milled flour?!? I don't know what's going on at this place but, when it comes to food, honesty and transparency are MANDATORY. Had they been upfront about this I wouldn't have come to write this review. But if you're going to lie to customers faces, especially ones who have promoted you over the years, well, here's your review. It's as if 'sourdough' has now replaced 'artisanal' or 'farm to table' ideals marketing so often try to sell us on, all to avoid the unnecessary sugar and frosting distraction. If Eller was a song, she'd be sang by Christina Aguilera. Just enticing enough to catch your attention but something about her 'flavor profile' that's keeping our palettes at bay. Also the first time we were here, both coffee cups tasted and smelled of dish soap residue. The Yukon gold potatoes that's been sliced to crispy delight has a distinct old oil taste. The oil that was used to fry these were reconstituted more times than gross. However, I did LOVE their egg crepe. Small but done well. They know how to fry an egg but $4 per extra egg? It's the OC alright. Lastly that French omelette... all that lingers is heavy heavy olive oil. Not the good kind either. Just Kirkland brand olive oil.. coating my entire French omelette. I could taste any eggs after the first third of the egg. Traditionally the only way to get French omelette done is with butter. Lots and lots of butter. I signed up for it but got none of it. Visited Eller for the first time and can't believe we didn't know about it sooner! It's hidden away in a largely warehouse district, so don't be surprised when you drive up. The interior aesthetic of Eller is incredible, with the open mill and kitchen, and the long wall of available baked goods. The staff are all incredible friendly and helpful and very attentive to each customer. Even though the baked items steal the show, don't miss out on their menu of prepared meals, which are also delicious! We chose a couple sourdough items, the best of which was the cinnamon roll, and simple coffees. We loved the ceramics they used and the outdoor patio seating was the perfect setting to enjoy the food. Eller Bakery is a place I'm super into taking OTHERS to. I think the variety of sourdough pastries is insane and they all look really good. I'm not a huge fan of sourdough in my sweets but everyone I've taken here loves it! I enjoy the coffee and searing area. Usually very crowded and a little pricey but definitely a place you should try at least once. Drinks come out fast! read more

If you love beautifully executed sourdough and trendy cafe vibes, Eller Bakery in Costa Mesa is absolutely worth the hype. The space itself is gorgeous; very industrial, modern, and effortlessly cool, but still warm and inviting. From the moment we arrived until we left, the cafe stayed packed, which honestly says everything. We decided to sit outside in their back garden area and it was such a cute, quaint little escape. Perfect atmosphere for a slow breakfast date. The food was incredible. Eller is clearly serious about sourdough and they absolutely nail the execution. We shared the sourdough cinnamon roll and it was easily one of the best pastries we've had in a long time. I ordered the bacon quiche with a side salad, and my husband had the breakfast sandwich with chicken sausage, both were outstanding and felt thoughtfully made with really high-quality ingredients. For drinks, he had the hot Americano and I went with the cold protein latte. Both were solid choices and paired perfectly with breakfast.
