My family and I have been patrons of Cream Pan in Tustin for nearly two decades now, even before the TikTok strawberry croissant craze and even before it opened more locations like in Fountain Valley and Lomita. The quality has just been so utterly consistent. These baked goods truly taste rustic and homemade; I believe the freshness is guaranteed and everything is baked daily. I always buy the shuku pan to make sandwiches my daily lunches and the country bread/sourdough for my avocado toast and breakfasts. The sandwiches made in-house are also recommended especially the chicken katsu and the assorted ham/tuna/egg salad. I like the croquette and egg salad in a bun especially. All of these are savory and flavorful yet subtle. I also recommend any of the pastries including curry pan, melon pan, and of course the strawberry croissants but beyond that I also really like the strawberry banana croissant and blueberry croissant. There is also a selection of drinks made in-house café-style as well as bottled Japanese drinks. The staff are friendly and I really like the space even though it's small. You can find seating outside especially if you avoid rush hours. Of all the three locations, this one is my favorite because it's so rustic and historic and really fits in with the overall vibe and aesthetic of Old Town Tustin and the El Camino Real. The portions across the board are generous, high-quality, and worth every penny.  As you can see from my previous review, their chicken katsu is one of my faves. It is crisp on the outside, and tender on the inside. It's a generous portion with plenty of Japanese curry sauce, and I love the pickled red ginger. There is a kiosk available from 9:30 to 5 pm, where you can now order and pay for their katsu items. I believe the Chicken Katsu Curry was around $17.99. You need to show the receipt when they call your name. I also picked up a couple of sandwiches. The Tuna Butter Roll hits the spot for a quick, comforting lunch. It is packed with creamy tuna, cucumber, and tomato slices--at just around $3.50, it's an incredible value. The Sandwich Box assortment (egg, ham, turkey, tuna) gives you a little bit of everything, making it perfect for a satisfying light lunch on the go. Cream Pan is a solid staple. I haven't tried most of their items, but have tried a few. Strawberry croissants: 7.5/10. What Cream Pan is known for, to the point where people call this a cream pan. Solid and I prefer their pastry cream over the whipped cream that a lot of places use. You can easily buy as a set. The more you buy, the larger the discount. It feels like it's gone through shrinkflation though. Also not as good as it used to be. Adzuki cream: 10/10. The hidden star of the place. Absolutely phenomenal. Great flavor. The whipped cream is slightly too sweet but amazing otherwise. Love the red bean in here. There's a good mix of textures. Feels light thanks to the cream. Cream puff: 6/10. Was disappointed by this to be honest. Other pastries I've tried like the one in the photo are just okay. Nothing stand out. Customer service isn't great. This place is such a mystery. How could someplace so unattractive and run down produce the very best bakery items in Orange County? The old adage "You can't judge a book by its cover," is true here. Inside, it is like a aged cafeteria of your childhood. You have to wait for a young lady who can't even look over the top of the counter because there is so much stuff piled high. She stands on tip toes to see you and you have to shout at her and point what you want. The problem is when she sees you, you are near the cash register, so you must say excuse me and walk in front of a line of people to point and shout out what you want. It is so poorly designed and complicated to order. We all endure because like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, the product is worth it. I have to go back to cream pan whenever I'm in socal. Everything still tastes great and they still have all the pastries I enjoy. During my recent trip here, I got cream Puffs (my favorite) and the strawberry croissant. There was a short line but it moved quickly. Customer service was average, and they keep the line moving. I would've ordered more, but was flying back to sac in a few hours so had to limit what I ordered to bring back. This location is the original and it is crowded inside since they sell goods also. We have made pit stops at this OG branch of Cream Pan in Tustin over the years. The location of this well-known Japanese/French bakery was unusual in that it's isolated in a corner of the El Camino Plaza. I had expected the business to be in a more high volume area, however a benefit of their corner spot was that the parking lot had plenty of spaces. There's no indoor seating, but outdoor tables were set up along the north and east perimeters of the building. I was by myself at this latest visit, and it was close to the end of the day so the inventory was quite depleted. There was no line at all which was not a surprise. The famous Strawberry Croissants and prepackaged items were on refrigerated display to the left when you walked in. As the service counter rounded a corner, there were more fresh baked goods on display before you reached a register. Across from the registers were shelves containing bags of fresh bread products. I bought a Strawberry Croissant, a Sticky Bun, a Ham and Cheese Croissant, and an Apple Croissant. The quality of the pastry dough was very good, and I could see why the Strawberry Croissant was a favorite with the customers. The croissants were light and flakey, and the powdered sugar added a delicate topping to the strawberry version. If I were to rate on just the Strawberry Croissant, then it would be five stars. My overall rating was downgraded because of the customer traffic flow. The lines can be optimized so that if you wanted to buy a six-pack of the Strawberry Croissants and/or anything prepackaged, then a separate queue should be arranged for those customers. The cafeteria trays were of limited use if you were not getting a large number of items. As you advanced in the queue, other products had to be requested from a worker behind the counter and then those were not placed on the tray. Ultimately, I think they can configure the operation to more efficiently handle the higher volume periods of the day. read more

THIS ONE STAR REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE WAY THE LINE IS SET UP HERE. I love everything else about Cream Pan, but honestly, the line to select your pastry and the checkout is so UN-USER-FRIENDLY. The self service, pre-made lunch bentos, sandos and sushi area is fine, but once you need assistance from a worker, it starts getting ridic. How so? You speak to whomever is attempting to assist you OVER and UNDER a twenty-four year old counter area that holds the pastries and/or through a tiny hole in the cabinets. You can hardly make eye contact with the person, because all the pastry is in between where you are standing and where they are standing. Some people are tall, some short, but regardless, there is NO WAY to have a conversation with them. They are trying to see what exactly you are possibly pointing to in the case, but as noted, you're talking thru a case of pastry. This is also true at the Fountain Valley location, where they only have a very small counter to check out with many people standing in line trying to have someone collect their order from the back. Maybe also ask WHY there is never any KINAKO donuts? I was there at 11 am and I got THE LAST ONE! If these are so popular, why don't you make enough to sell throughout the day? Every other time I've been here, you were already SOLD OUT! SMH HAS ANYONE HERE SEEN THE SELF SERVICE process at 85 degrees? All their pastry is individually wrapped and you calmly walk through the SELF SERVICE pastry area with a tray and tongs to help yourself. If you'd like to pass the person in front of you, it's easy and doable because there is plenty of room and it doesn't make anyone feel like you are taking "cuts". Once you get to the end, the cashier totals up your tray and puts it in a bag or box for you. Done & Done. Let me reiterate that your pastry and food are all above par and I know you've been in business since 2002 and let me commend you for 24 years of service, but it's time to CHANGE IT UP to a more user friendly process. It's not appealing to anyone in this busy day and age that there is a line out the door, ONLY BECAUSE THE PROCESS INSIDE NEEDS HELP! Good thing I got here before 11am on my way to church; I read a review here that the lines go out the door after 11am. Whew. On this inaugural visit, I got thei namesake cream pan. The have both sweet and savory pastries. The sweet ones are out front as you pass the case facing the door. The savory selections are featured after you turn the corner of the counter. They also have sandwiches as well as a Karaage and musubi combo which I want to try. I got the iconic strawberry croissant which was flakey and had a bit of custard and a few slices of strawberry inside. It's 2 maybe 3 bites. It was delicious but I think I prefer the azuki cream pan. The azuki cream pan was filled with azuki bean and had a light sweet cream filling too. The combination of the 2 made for a delightful taste and texture. The process is easy, stand in line, order the items as you see them. So sweet items first then savory. If you want a bunch of sandwiches or musubi then grab a tray. This Cream Pan is nothing like their FV location, which is sad because Tustin is actually the original. I don't know what happened to this place. We came on a Monday at 2pm thinking it wouldn't be crazy because it's wasn't the weekend and we're surprised to see nothing on the shelves. I don't know why they just didn't lock up early. Staff said if you don't get there before noon you most likely won't be able to get anything. They were completely out of sandwiches, salad and sushi. No curries and almost all pasties were gone with the exception of the strawberry croissants thank god because that is what they are famous for. I've been a customer since the 90's. But with my blood sugar climbing, my doctor suggested I tone down my consumption of carbs. So I am not here so much anymore but still love this place and buy a box full when I have company. Everything I've ever had has been good to great, except for one bakery item - the donut - and the coffee. Not a fan of those two items. My favorite item is their blueberry croissant. The open face pastry with blueberries on a light bed of custard. especially when warmed in an air fryer for a few minutes is perfect. Most love their custard and strawberry filled croissant, not very big but just enough as a sweet after a nice meal. Their almond croissant is great, chock full of almonds on top and almond paste inside. The blueberry scones are great with coffee - flakey and moist blueberries. Apple croissant and b utter croissant are buttery and tasty. Again best warmed up in a conventional oven or air fryer. Microwaving (which only rotates the water molecules inside a baked good) kills the crisp texture. I have not tried pork bun, sandwiches, or other newer items I wish they would make eclairs or cream puffs. They also have some cake slices and a beautiful and delicious but pricey tiny fruit tart. There are tables outside. But i don't like their coffee so I always end up taking my purchased items home. One warning - during busy times, the line is out the door and they will sometimes run out. When we moved to Old Town a few years ago, I was happy because we were so close to Cream Pan. On our weekend walks, we always pass by Cream Pan. It always smells amazing because they make everything fresh. Whenever we celebrate a birthday (which is often because we have three kids), we always order a Strawberry Shortcake a couple of days beforehand and pick it up the morning we need it. It saves time and we don't need to stand in line. I tried their Chocolate Cake and I wasn't a fan of it. I thought it was chocolate cake, but they had bananas in it.
