There was a great variety to choose from, and the quality was impressive for an all-you-can-eat spot. A special shoutout to our waitress, Nancy! Honestly, the whole experience was pretty disappointing. We waited about an hour and a half just to get seated, then got to our table around 7:25 PM. Kayleen was actually fine and did let us know the omakase would take about 15 minutes, so we appreciated the heads-up. The problem was ours didn't come out until around 35 minutes later, and the rest of the meal felt just as slow. The sushi itself was pretty mediocre. The quality just wasn't there for me, especially for the price. The rice to fish ratio was way off, with way too much rice, especially on the rolls, and everything felt pretty inconsistent. We also ordered the yakiniku, which took around 30 minutes to come out. When it finally arrived, it seemed more fried than grilled, which was confusing because yakiniku is supposed to be grilled. Another thing that bothered us was that empty plates would just sit on the table unless we asked someone to clear them. When you add up the long wait to get in, the long wait for food, average sushi, and the $$$ price point, it just didn't feel worth it. We've been here several times before and normally have a good experience, so this visit was especially disappointing. We usually order the low-carb rolls because they're made without rice or wrapped in rice paper, and the portions are normally small enough that we can enjoy several different rolls and order multiple rounds. This time, however, the rolls were packed with an excessive amount of crab salad, and some of the rolls that normally come without rice had rice in them. The portions were so large that we couldn't even make it past our first round. Unfortunately, the service was just as disappointing. We ordered a chicken teriyaki plate a specific way, but it came out differently. When we politely mentioned it to our server Amanda, instead of simply addressing the issue, she rolled her eyes, took the plate away, and walked off without saying anything. We came to Sushi Damu for a birthday dinner on a Sunday afternoon. We had been here once a long time ago before they overhauled their look and seemingly their menu. We didn't have a good experience but we saw they leaned into a new premium focus and were interested in their higher tier AYCE including an omakase set ($60). We came in and were sat fairly quickly. The vibe was different before, going seemingly with a more minimalistic and traditional look. The server was very helpful in explaining their ordering system. There was fairly low caps on the quantity of nigiri you could order in 1 of the 3 rounds, but insanely high caps on rolls (like truly odd like 13 full rolls or something whereas the limit on nigiri was something like 10 pcs per person). I suppose it's not surprising as they would hope customers fill up on rolls, but at this price point we were a bit surprised. We weren't able to order sushi until the omakase came out, so we got some appetizers. While some were okay, a few of them were just not great. Their cucumber salad had some sort of off taste. The shrimp tempura was objectively just not well made. The omakase was brought out by the manager, who explained the courses. Everything looked and sounded great, but we were surprised to see salmon sashimi with basil pesto as one of them. I understand that if there was a place for experimentation, it would be in an omakase set, but it just felt kind of random. Once we got into it, the fish was all fantastic. The nigiri and sashimi pieces were very high quality. The salmon tasted how you would expect - salmon with pesto on it (not our favorite). The shrimp was great, but the oyster tasted a bit fishy. The fried aji fish looked great but came out a bit oily, maybe having to do with the temp of the fry? As we moved into AYCE, we were mostly met with impressive sushi. The nigiri quality was quite good for all you can eat. The issue was mainly the wait. Between the time we put in our first order sheet and received our first round of nigiri, we probably waited over 30 minutes. With having to wait until after the omakase, plus the time limit, that kind of wait is just unfair. That doesn't even consider the fact that you are actively getting more full as you wait. This continued on until the end of the meal. We also felt like trying one of their rolls, so we opted for the cherry bomb. The roll was shockingly full of rice, and the tuna they used to top it was of much lower quality than some of the other tuna they served. I wouldn't recommend it. We finished the meal with ice cream bars included in the AYCE menu. We ended up talking with the manager, mostly about the wait, and he ended up giving us a 10% discount on our order and offered his apologies for the experience, which we appreciated. He said they were busy, which I understand, but it didn't seem to be any more crowded than the average AYCE spot on a weekend. For the price, I don't feel like the experience is what we would've hoped, especially compared to some other options in OC. read more

Unassuming outside, Sushi Damu truly exceeded expectations especially as an AYCE! You can tell it's a local favorite -- it was crowded on a random 2PM weekday. My husband and I tried their new omakase experience, which was on a promotion for $65 for the omakase experience followed by AYCE which was such a steal. Fish was fresh and great quality especially for the price. Definitely recommend coming for this promotion while it's still going on (one of the premium AYCE options was already priced for $65 so you're essentially getting a 2 for 1 With the new omakase experience with the promotion). Salmon and yellowtail was good as well. Service was fast once it got going but it was slow to start. Staff were all friendly and nice. Main concern: when i bit into blue fin tuna sashimi, i felt a thin layer of ice as if the fish hasn't been properly thawed. Big issue since this is one of the main things i came for Regardless, imo this is one of the best ayce in oc in terms of bang for your buck since you can order as many blue fin tuna as you can. This is very similar to x fish, biggest difference is that x fish is $55 and you also get a 12 piece omakase which includes a toro piece. This place is $60 without that. But if you live in the oc area it makes more sense to come here instead of driving further to go to x fish. read more

Please note that their fizzy drinks are not from a soda machine but rather a can with ice on the side I didn't mind but just letting you know. At first, we understood because it seemed busy, but after waiting longer we finally asked about it and were told that our order paper had been lost. If we didn't ask would they have even noticed? They also forgot one of our appetizer orders but at that point it wasn't worth waiting for. The tables were somewhat close together. Everything was kept clean. If you're a millennial, you'll appreciate the type of music. Service: We thought the service can improve. 3/5 at most. The host was really nice when he greeted & seated us. If you need assistance, you'd flip the sign to get their attention. It takes a while to grab their attention. The servers weren't as efficient. They forgot some of our dishes and didn't bring a bottle opener for the beers. Throughput was a bit slow bc it took a while to receive our orders. Sushi & cocktails: They offer two options, and we decided to go with the Premium AYCE. They have a QR code for the menu then you'd fill out the sheet for each round. The taste of each fish was good, especially the seasoned ones. Presentation can improve. Some of the cuts were messy. My favorite appetizers is the Monkey Ball. The alcoholic beverages were sweet. This is my third review and I'm honestly sad to say that it was not good ... there was no wait, which was great, but service was probably the worst I've had here this day. It's usually not that bad but our table and the one next to us, we were not having it. We waited for about 20 minutes for somebody to help us. It was not that busy so we didn't understand why. There were 5-6 chefs and maybe only 3-4 servers. I did talk to Jackie in the end and told her that we waited for a while and also, my sister had a seed or something rock hard in her Philly roll. We did tell Jackie about it and they gave us a small discount but it honestly could've been better. I wish we took a photo of the rolls but we didn't. They were just messy and it kept falling apart. Came here after debating between Sushi Damu and Sake 2 Me Newport - ended up choosing Damu because we heard parking was easier. Ironically, we got there around 6 PM and still had to circle for about 10 minutes before finding parking since the plaza was packed (possibly because of the animal hospital in the same center). Pro tip: even if you join the waitlist online, you still need to check in inside when you arrive. We missed that step, so parties who arrived after us got seated before us. We ordered the AYCE Premium (without the grilled options), and honestly it was more than enough food. Service was friendly and efficient, and dishes came out at a good pace. Favorites: * Nigiri: Unagi, Scallop * Rolls: Craw Me Daddy, Dynamite, Spider Roll * Appetizer: Baked Mussels, Poke Nacho Music was decent volume where it was still easy to have a conversation. I will say the sushi was good, the interior is nice and the service was no issue! For $45 (which ends up being $55 after tax and tip) I left stuffed, but I don't think that was good, I was unsure I got my moneys worth and will say the rolls were a bit sloppy, most every sashimi and roll had rice falling out which was not great, very messy and tough to eat. Their $60 all-you-can-eat omakase might be one of the best omakases you can get in Orange County. You start off with a refreshing salad, 9 pieces of sashimi including otoro or fatty tuna, that literally melts in your mouth, and a meaty raw oyster that was super fresh. Then a tempura course with a tempura black cod that was my favorite, miso soup, and 7 pieces of premium sushi with even more otoro! $60 for everything before this AND you get access to their regular all-you-can-eat menu! I had to try some of their new yakitori skewers, extra orders of my favorite sushi like salmon carpaccio, and they also have riceless roll options. Someone recommended me this place and I was excited to try the premium sashimi and yakitori add on, but what was presented was kind of sad. The yakitori is in fact not yakitori at all but proteins pre cooked and stuck onto skewers. They presented me pork belly yakitori that was so bland looking I thought it was raw! It was weird chunks of pork cut in all random sizes and they were tough and hard to chew. It was super gross I had to ask them to recook them. The beef was tough but it was fine. Pre-Cooked and pricked onto skewers. Skip em The sashimi option was good, we had some good tuna and the eel nigiri were great. But after that it was all downhill from there. If I had just had the sashimi and some of the nigiri I would have been singing them praises but the rest of it was hard to swallow. All the rolls had an aggressive amount of mushy rice. We had a monster roll which was fine just a lot of rice. I would honestly skip all the rolls. I had the baked mussels and they used so much mayo sauce and there was water coming from the mussels so it was like soup with hot mayo on top. Uck The spicy garlic edamame used Siracha as the spice and it was not what I was expecting and it kind of grossed me out. I could not eat it. The veggie tempura was raw. I had a raw sweet potato. The broccoli had sucked up more batter and it had gummy raw batter in the inside of it. After tax and tip it was more than $155 for 2 people for lunch and it was not worth it. I don't know why people recommend this place, but hit me up and I'll tell you where some better places are. read more

I used to consider Sushi Damu one of my favorite places for all-you-can-eat sushi and sashimi. I especially loved their sashimi and the variety of options they offered. Unfortunately, after my most recent visit, I was extremely disappointed. We were seated promptly, but then waited about 30 minutes for our food, only to find out that our order had never been put in. Meanwhile, tables that were seated after us were already being served. After finally receiving our first round, the same issue happened again with our next round. We even asked for our water to be refilled and still felt like we were the forgotten table. One of the things I always appreciated about Damu was the attentive service. Servers used to come by regularly to make sure everything was taken care of, so the difference in service this time was especially noticeable. By our third round, we specifically asked for our plates to be kept separate because I cannot eat shellfish, but the fish was combined anyway. At that point, we were already frustrated and just wanted to leave. They did try to correct the mistake, but then brought out more fish than we had requested. Thankfully, they did not charge us for the leftover fish, but we were still charged the full price for the meal. The quality also seemed noticeably lower than what I remember, which was disappointing on top of all the service issues. Overall, this was honestly the worst eating experience I've ever had. It was so unpleasant and disappointing that even if I were offered a free meal, I would not come back. That's how strongly this experience changed my opinion of the restaurant. read more

This place is great. We arrived on Saturday evening, and there was a bit of a wait -- no surprise. The Google waitlist said there was no wait, but that was not true, so don't rely on that. Instead, try getting on the Yelp waitlist. In spite of being packed, the hostess was very friendly and personable, as well as our waitstaff. Their interior is a bit awkward because all the booths have low backs, so there isn't much privacy. It's a rather small place, so you will be stared at by the people waiting for a table. We did premium AYCE and were happy with everything we tried. Their lychee martini was good, as well as the Izakaya menu -- I only wish they had onigiri. Their presentation of the dishes was nice, too. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, so they were kind enough to bring us a dessert.
