Their $60 all-you-can-eat omakase might be one of the best omakases you can get in Orange County. You start off with a refreshing salad, 9 pieces of sashimi including otoro or fatty tuna, that literally melts in your mouth, and a meaty raw oyster that was super fresh. Then a tempura course with a tempura black cod that was my favorite, miso soup, and 7 pieces of premium sushi with even more otoro! $60 for everything before this AND you get access to their regular all-you-can-eat menu! I had to try some of their new yakitori skewers, extra orders of my favorite sushi like salmon carpaccio, and they also have riceless roll options. I've been here before (about a year ago), and the food and service were both excellent, which is why I decided to come back. Unfortunately, today's experience was completely different. When you're paying around $45 per person for what is advertised as premium all-you-can-eat sushi, you expect the service to match the price. I was surprised to walk in and see the restaurant nearly empty with only a few occupied tables, yet the service was unbelievably slow from start to finish. It took a long time just to get water, even longer for someone to pick up our order sheet, and refills were almost nonexistent. There was only one waitress serving the dining room while several other employees appeared to be recording content for the restaurant's new menu. Our food came out extremely slowly, and we spent most of our meal just sitting there waiting. After our first round of sushi, we finally asked our waitress what was going on. She explained that they were busy recording content for the new menu. As paying customers, it was frustrating to feel like creating social media content was a higher priority than providing good service to the guests who were actually in the restaurant. We asked to speak with a manager, and that conversation was just as disappointing. Instead of apologizing or taking ownership of the situation, his first response was that we could leave without paying if we wanted. That was such a strange way to handle a customer complaint. He then asked if taking 50% off the bill would be okay. While I appreciated the discount, the interaction felt awkward and didn't really address the issue. The sushi itself was okay, but the overall experience was not. I came for the premium $60 ayce includes blue fin tuna and sashimi They have a bunch of things on their menu from nigiri, rolls, appetizers, hot dishes, sashimi, and etc. The blue fin tuna nigiri was pretty good, similar quality to x fish. Salmon and yellowtail was good as well. Service was fast once it got going but it was slow to start. Staff were all friendly and nice. Main concern: when i bit into blue fin tuna sashimi, i felt a thin layer of ice as if the fish hasn't been properly thawed. Big issue since this is one of the main things i came for Regardless, imo this is one of the best ayce in oc in terms of bang for your buck since you can order as many blue fin tuna as you can. This is very similar to x fish, biggest difference is that x fish is $55 and you also get a 12 piece omakase which includes a toro piece. This place is $60 without that. The ambiance is gorgeous dark, moody, and they have great food and service. This may be weird to point out but I love the size of their tables haha so spacious. Please note that their fizzy drinks are not from a soda machine but rather a can with ice on the side I didn't mind but just letting you know. Food is absolutely picture perfect and I love the options of the baked sushi. I was able to get dry udon for my baby girl. Ages 0-3 are free and thank goodness because I have twin babies (not so babies) and it gets expensive doing family outings. Im already thinking about my next meal here. Sushi Damu has always been my favorite AYCE sushi spot because of the quality, variety, and usually great service, so this experience was really disappointing. I give Five Stars for the food, but two for the service we received this night. We came in for dinner and placed our first round of orders, and while we received our sides and two rolls, we were still waiting on our nigiri for quite a while. At first, we understood because it seemed busy, but after waiting longer we finally asked about it and were told that our order paper had been lost. If we didn't ask would they have even noticed? By that point, we had already been waiting a long time. We were handed a new order sheet and put in our 1st round order again and not long after that we were then told to put in the rest of our order because last call was soon... They also forgot one of our appetizer orders but at that point it wasn't worth waiting for. Finding a spot can be difficult. Since all the spots close to the restaurant were already taken, I parked further in the back. The host was really nice when he greeted & seated us. If you need assistance, you'd flip the sign to get their attention. It takes a while to grab their attention. The servers weren't as efficient. They forgot some of our dishes and didn't bring a bottle opener for the beers. Throughput was a bit slow bc it took a while to receive our orders. Sushi & cocktails: They offer two options, and we decided to go with the Premium AYCE. They have a QR code for the menu then you'd fill out the sheet for each round. The taste of each fish was good, especially the seasoned ones. Presentation can improve. Some of the cuts were messy. My favorite appetizers is the Monkey Ball. The alcoholic beverages were sweet. Came here after debating between Sushi Damu and Sake 2 Me Newport - ended up choosing Damu because we heard parking was easier. Ironically, we got there around 6 PM and still had to circle for about 10 minutes before finding parking since the plaza was packed (possibly because of the animal hospital in the same center). Pro tip: even if you join the waitlist online, you still need to check in inside when you arrive. We missed that step, so parties who arrived after us got seated before us. We ordered the AYCE Premium (without the grilled options), and honestly it was more than enough food. Service was friendly and efficient, and dishes came out at a good pace. Favorites: * Nigiri: Unagi, Scallop * Rolls: Craw Me Daddy, Dynamite, Spider Roll * Appetizer: Baked Mussels, Poke Nacho Music was decent volume where it was still easy to have a conversation. This place is great. We arrived on Saturday evening, and there was a bit of a wait -- no surprise. The Google waitlist said there was no wait, but that was not true, so don't rely on that. Instead, try getting on the Yelp waitlist. In spite of being packed, the hostess was very friendly and personable, as well as our waitstaff. Their interior is a bit awkward because all the booths have low backs, so there isn't much privacy. It's a rather small place, so you will be stared at by the people waiting for a table. We did premium AYCE and were happy with everything we tried. Their lychee martini was good, as well as the Izakaya menu -- I only wish they had onigiri. Their presentation of the dishes was nice, too. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, so they were kind enough to bring us a dessert. (I want to preface that I have come to Sushi Damu a handful of times prior to this review, and back then it would have been a 4/5 review.) The sushi quality is top tier, there are many options of rolls to choose from, and I love that the interior has been renovated to look more upscale. My only reason for bumping down my review to 3/5 stars is because the service quality on my last visit was a bit concerning. My party and I came in on a Friday evening, around 8pm, but after we sat down and ordered our first round, more than 30 mins had past and we never got the first round! By that time, it was already close to 8:50 and the servers admitted they lost our order sheet, and were prompting us to make one big batch to order as last call was coming up in the next 20 mins. We had no choice but to bulk order what should have been the second and third round, and it sucked because we were rushed from our meal. I want to give Sushi Damu and the team another chance, but I am also being honest here and learn from our mistake of not waiting more than 20+ mins to check on your order. The place is clean but the music is just way too loud (maybe because I'm old now) and the service is good but slow . Our server Amy was cool and nice though. The food is good here. We ordered fish taco, beef skewers, jalapeño bomb, sushi salad from the appetizers and all 10/10. We ordered nigiri's, sashimi's, rolls, and much more all 10/10. We also had some soju frose and soju with beer to make somaek. Lots of variety of options to chose from but since the orders take long to make order a lot in round one. The lovers set for two people came with salmon, tuna, and yellowtail nigiri, one salmon roll, one tuna roll, and an assortment of tuna and yellowtail imitation crab meat and avocado rolls. Just not for me. Started strong with sashimi. Made the mistake of ordering 3 rolls for two people. Four came to the table. The rolls were loaded with rice and sauce. We were done after trying to finish what they sent to the table. So for $75pp after tax and tip it felt like not a great experience. It would be great if the kitchen could do smaller portions. Then we wouldn't have felt force-fed. We also found things too salty and were thirsty for hours after. I think I just have to swear off buffets. Sushi Damu used to be our go-to spot for AYCE sushi back when they had three different tiers. The price was very fair for the portion and quality of food you'd get. But ever since they changed the menu the food quality has gotten drastically worse. We mainly order nigiri at sushi restaurants and the fish didn't taste as fresh as it used to. There was also way too much rice, and on top of that the rice itself was stiff. Some of the appetizers were lacking flavors and basically tasted like they were unseasoned. The service was still great. Our server Mai was very sweet and attentive. But unfortunately, despite how much I used to love this place, I don't think I'll be returning. This is an all you can eat (AYCE) spot, so when they called us we were greeted with two diff menus and told to choose before we got seated. And since it was our first time, that was a bit overwhelming as we weren't even seated yet. But it seems that they're so busy that they suggested we choose before sitting since once we sit our "time limit starts." As for the food, the first round was great! Loved it! But then we noticed the second round, it wasn't consistent! Not sure if it's because they were so busy or what. For example, we knew we liked certain carpaccio and sashimi, so we ordered them again the second round, but the cut or taste was different.. disappointing. Service was just okay. We expected better service like refilling our waters. We noticed that the servers only checked on us when we turned the table's sign to "alert" them... Actually branched out for the first time and tried some other options. I am already stuffed and I have my five rolls to go through still lol it's been absolutely delicious. Music is great service is fantastic. It's nice to see people with manners. You can choose between two AYCE options: premium $45 and their sashimi/grill $60 that also comes with dessert. We got the premium AYCE and ordered: -variety of nigiri: bluefin tuna, ebi, salmon, scallops, smoked salmon- 4 stars, unagi, and yellowtail - scallop handroll- 3 stars- bland - caterpillar roll- 4 stars - coconut shrimp roll- 4 stars - craw me daddy roll- 3.5 stars - dynamite roll- 4.5 stars - Alaska roll- 5 stars - spider roll- 3 stars- very bland - shogun roll- 5 stars You can order up to 3 rounds and you have a 90-minute time limit. There is a green and red card you can rotate towards the kitchen so you can order your izakaya/ small dishes and snacks with the server, and hand them your nigiri and rolls sheet. The servers were welcoming and efficient, and our orders came out fast. They were attentive and came back to collect our dishes and refill our waters. The food was pretty good overall, although their rolls were a bit oversauced, so the quality of the fish could not shine through. Glad I got to try them out. We've been on a sushi kick lately, and decided to try the AYCE dinner at Sushi Damu. We arrived early at 4pm on a Saturday to avoid the crowd. They're located in a small shopping center right off of El Camino Real and Red Hill Ave. Parking is somewhat limited since they're in a small plaza. Upon arrival, the restaurant was already 3/4 full. It's a medium-sized restaurant that's laid out in several rows. We added our name to the Yelp waitlist, but they sat us right away. Pro tip: you can also put your name on the waitlist via their website before you arrive. It'll tell you how long the wait is. They have 2 menu options for dinner - Premium AYCE for $45 or Sashimi + Grill for $60 (see attached photos). We opted for the Premium $45 menu. The waitress explained how the ordering system works, and the green/red sign (green facing the chefs means you're ready to eat, red means you're not ready). Our food came out really fast! We ordered several rounds - various types of nigiri, hand rolls (forgot to take a pic of those), Alaska baked roll, poke nachos & mussels. My favorites were the blue fin tuna and salmon nigiri. Hubby & I both agreed that the fish was fresher and more flavorful than the other AYCE sushi place that we've been going to. The waitresses and servers were very friendly, attentive and efficient. We never had to wait for anything. The atmosphere was a bit too loud though, especially the music. I could barely hear my hubby speak. I feel like others were speaking loudly so they could be heard above the music, too. I think it would help to turn the music down a bit. My first time trying $60 AYCE, Sashimi are fresh with good texture, I would give 4.5 rating, the reasons why not full 5 star is because the following that I think is not perfect. Hand Roll- the seaweed wrap is little bit hard to chew, I see some traditional Japanese restaurant where they bake the seaweed first so it will taste better. The yellowtail collard is little bit overcooked, I prefer it to be more juicy. But if you come here for just Sashimi, this is the place to enjoy, and I will be back for sure. read more

Finally tried the $90 omakase at Sushi Damu and honestly the fact that it also includes the premium AYCE makes it feel pretty worth it if you come hungry. The omakase pieces were solid across the board, especially the tuna and yellowtail which tasted really fresh. The eel had a great texture and the izumi dai was lighter and super clean tasting. I also liked the octopus more than expected since it wasn't overly chewy. One of my favorite bites overall was actually the spicy scallop nigiri from the AYCE side. Simple but really satisfying. The staff was so focused on filming and creating social media content for their new menu that they completely neglected the customers who were actually paying to eat there. We were literally forgotten about. Our food was left sitting on the counter while they continued filming instead of serving it. We waited over 30 minutes for our second round of food with no explanation, no apology, and no communication. Eventually we canceled it because we had already been sitting there for so long. We left hungry because we never received the food we ordered, yet we were still charged $75. If filming promotional content was their priority that day, they should have closed the restaurant for a couple of hours instead of staying open and providing half-hearted service to paying customers. It's incredibly unprofessional to use your customers to fund your business while treating them like an inconvenience because you're busy making content for social media. This was our first visit, and it will absolutely be our last. There are plenty of restaurants that know how to balance marketing with customer service. This place clearly does not. This was nice considering some sushi restaurants do not quickly check in on additional orders. The sushi was pretty good, but the ratio of rice to fish felt more rice heavy. We love eel and usually get some form of a dragon roll. Seeing Dragon's Breath appealed to us. When they served it in a firy plate, it gave us unwarranted attention from other patrons. We didn't know this, so our social anxiety went up (not the restaurant's fault! But good to note). The roll had too much cream cheese, which made it feel heavy, and overpowered the taste of the fish.
