Had the pleasure of dining at Chaak, and since I knew I'd be in the area that day, I decided it was best to make reservations. We arrived about 15-20 minutes early because we weren't sure how busy it would be. When we walked in, it was surprisingly slow, which was odd, the maitre d took a good minute to seat us. There were plenty of available tables, but she decided to wait until exactly 6:30, which felt a bit off. Our server also took a while, maybe another 10-15 minutes to arrive, but at least someone was pouring water in the meantime. After some time, Lyndsay came over apologizing, explaining she was busy cleaning up broken wine bottles? Once that was sorted, everything got much better. We ordered the bone-in NY steak, octopus (pulpo asado), esquites, and finally the Bombas! Everything was absolutely -- it was a fantastic experience. I can't wait to visit their sister location, which offers more modern Mexican cuisine, compared to Chaak, which is inspired by the Yucatan Peninsula. Very modern ambiance! Reservations not required but highly suggested!

I ate here with a group of work colleagues. When I had Googled the location before coming I realized that I would be eating at my first Michelin star rated restaurant in the US. This in a old downtown area of Tustin where parking is limited; I had to cruise around the block a few times to find a parking place on the street. We were seated after checking in with a reservation. The restaurant is dimly-lit so I needed the light on my phone to illuminate the menu. I started out with the Higa, a gin cocktail. There were quite a few offerings to chose from but ended up getting the half chicken. That chicken had a generous spice rub on it and gave it great flavor. I was disappointed that they had very limited offerings for vegetables. My colleagues were pleased with their food and the service was good. I had never been to a Michelin starred restaurant in the US and didn't know what to expect. I was surprised when I saw how plain the restroom was. This was a four star experience for me.

Service was awesome. Everyone was super attentive. Food came out quickly. We tried a myriad of appetizers and then had a couple of mains and it was perfect for a group of eight. The aguas frescas guava hibiscus was really good. Standouts were the clams, unique corn and the chicken with a spicy citrusy sauce. The sauces were all super flavorful. We enjoyed the dessert as well. They made the celebration super special with a card!

Empanadas and ceviche campeche appetizers

I asked an OC foodie friend to recommend a good brunch spot around Santa Ana, and his answer was immediate: "Chaak Kitchen, hands down." Great call--and it's even listed in the Michelin Guide. The restaurant is beautiful, with inviting indoor/outdoor seating (a bonus since I could bring my dog). The brunch menu is somewhat limited, but there are still plenty of appealing options. We started with the empanadas, which were excellent--perfectly crisp, filled with melted Oaxaca cheese and scented with epazote, and served with a tangy habanero romesco. The ceviche campeche was equally impressive: bass and octopus with avocado and cucumber over a bed of avocado mousse, accompanied by blue corn tacos. Two of us ordered the Cubana torta with spicy fries. The roasted pork, Nueske ham, pickles, and Swiss cheese came together on a perfectly griddled roll. However, the chilaquiles rojos our friend chose were less successful--once the fried egg, crema, and avocado were gone, what remained was a plate of tortillas drenched in red sauce. Still, this Yucatán-inspired spot is a gem--and to top it off, our wonderful server was named Maya!

Marisco en Arroz Negro

This place seems to be highly recommended by people online, so we were extremely excited to try it. We came in around 8:40 p.m., and they told us they were closing soon, so we had about five minutes to put in our order. That wasn't an issue for us--we already knew what we wanted and understood we were coming in a bit late. The main issue was that our food came out undercooked. We ordered the Marisco en Arroz Negro, and some of the shrimp were undercooked--the bottoms were still transparent. We asked the server about it, and they told us, "It's usually fully cooked, but these tiger prawns can be eaten raw." But this dish is supposed to be cooked?? I didn't want to risk it tho. They did offer to remake it for us. Unfortunately, that experience kind of killed the vibe. I understand that mistakes happen, but for a dish that costs $52, you'd expect more care. Maybe it was because we came in close to closing time--I'm not sure--but overall it left a bad impression. Putting that aside and focusing on the food itself: aside from the undercooked seafood, the flavors were good. The crispy black rice was different, and I enjoyed the texture. The seafood tasted fresh. However, there were two major downsides--the dish was way too salty and extremely heavy. You can't finish it without feeling like you just drank a bunch of oil. We also ordered the castacán (pork belly taco). It was good, but overly sour. That said, I really enjoyed the tortilla--it tasted fresh and well made. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. Maybe this was just our experience, but it felt way too expensive for what it delivered and didn't have a wow factor.

We had a reservation for Easter brunch and were seated promptly. We ordered family-style for the table, and everything we tried was delicious. There were a couple of dishes we were hoping to try, but they weren't available on the brunch menu. The service was friendly and we had a nice time. There's street parking across the street which was easy enough early on Sunday.

Came here on New Year's Day for dinner with a reservation. Food was amazing! We ordered the Castacan (pork belly tacos), Codorniz a la brasa (grilled quail), mariscos en arroz negro, and orange margarita. The two of us had a pretty large lunch so we weren't super hungry. We got full after eating the quail and pork belly tacos and could only finish half of the mariscos en arroz negro. The Castacan tacos look small but they are actually really hefty and filling! The mariscos en arroz negro was also quite a large portion; I heated it up in a pan the next day and could barely finish the remaining half of the leftovers before I got full. Be aware that the rice is burnt and crunchy. I would recommend trying everything, especially the mariscos and the pork belly tacos. The orange margarita is a good recommendation for anyone who enjoys the clean strong taste of alcohol. The orange adds mild citrusy flavor, but it definitely is not a fruity drink.

CHAAK Kitchen is one of those places you walk into and immediately know you're in for something special. The flavors are bold, layered, and so thoughtfully done. Every dish feels like it was crafted with intention. The proteins were perfectly cooked, and the sauces had that deep, savory richness you can't fake. The atmosphere is warm and modern without trying too hard, and the service was genuinely kind and attentive. You can really feel the pride in everything they bring to the table. If you're looking for food that's memorable, elevated, and still comforting, CHAAK Kitchen is absolutely worth the visit. I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Ceviche and empanadas

Chaak Kitchen truly exceeded all my expectations - from the service, to the food to the restaurant's ambiance and decor, everything was top-notch. They offer a modern take on Yucatan-style Mexican cuisine, and every dish tasted incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared. While we tried a number of dishes, my favorites were the Ceviche Campeche, as the bass and octopus were perfectly marinated, and it was served with fresh blue-corn tortilla chips. The empanadas were soo good as well, they came out of the oven piping hot and generously stuffed with gooey Oaxaca cheese. The Caesar salad was elevated with their unique twist of crunchy corn nuts and plenty of cheese, making it better than your average salad. The Bistec en Recado sirloin steak was the star of the night, as it was cooked to perfection and paired with Chaak's flavorful (although a bit spicy) take on chimichurri. The service was great as well - our waitress, who is from the Yucatan, took the time to explain the roots of each dish, explaining what elements were traditional and how they were modernized, adding an extra layer of appreciation to the experience.

The ambience and service is phenomenal. I didn't love the food but the cocktails were delicious. Maybe I need to try a couple different dishes next time and give it another go. Overall it was a pleasant experience!

Great flavors and portions. The decor is pretty cool with a kind-of open kitchen concept.

Hibiscus + Grapefruit Margarita and Espinoza drinks

By far, one of the best meals we've had in the OC area! We went on a date night on a Saturday around 6pm. We didn't have any reservations but because we went around the time they opened, we were able to get seated outside within 10 min of arriving. Now for the star of the show: the delicious food. We got the CHAAK Caesar and wow it was delicious! The best Cesar salad we've had! We got the Castacan which are 2 confit pork belly tacos and the Cochinita Pibil, which we shared everything between 2 people. The pork belly tacos were INCREDIBLE. The pork belly melts in your mouth and holy cow the tortillas were so good. The Cochinita Pibil - another incredible dish! It came with tortillas and a side of sauces, it was perfect! All three dishes were great for 2 people. Everything was fresh, had incredible flavors and was delicious. The drinks were great too! We got the Hibiscus + Grapefruit Margarita and Espinoza drinks and we loved them!!! We also got the Bombas dessert to go and wow-they do not miss! We recommend! The service was also top notch! Nothing missed at CHAAK and now it is my favorite restaurant! We will be back! Definitely recommend visiting and trying it out for yourself!

Not sure what took me so long to try this spot out but I'm really glad I did! We had reservations on a Friday night for a friends birthday and started off with some cocktails which were really tasty. I got the ceviche and the pork belly tacos which were omg soooooo good! It comes with two but they are a pretty good size to be honest and it was pretty filling. The service was awesome also. I can't wait to come back and hopefully next time, for brunch!

Ask the Community - Chaak Kitchen

What is the noise level? Is it possible to have a conversation with several people at a table?

The noise level is moderate...you can have a conversation with your table.

Is there valet?

No. This is at the Old Town Tustin area. There are a lot of restaurants and shops in the area.

Is the brunch menu similar to dinner menu?

brunch has breakfast options and lunch plates. Menus are on the website too!

Is this restaurant kid friendly?

Not really- unless they are food aficionados

Is the roof always open?

No, but they do like to open every day if they can.

To make a reservation - they ask for you to put your credit card info online to book. Will it charge anything on the card?

No, they won't charge unless you're a no show. They said you can cancel up to 5 minutes before your reservation time and they still won't charge you. They just want a heads up so they're not saving your table for nothing.

Is the outdoor patio dog friendly?

Yes! We have brought our dog there before

Are you able to order food to go?

Only certain dishes are able to be made Togo. A lot of the menu is plated for service and not everything can be made Togo since it might take away from the integrity of the dish.

Do you sell giftcards?

Yes we do!

What's the corkage fee? Thanks

It was $20 last time I was in. I'd check it again when they reopen because a lot of restaurants have been upping these types of charges.

Can you accommodate a party of 8-10 outdoors?

Yes! I'd call the restaurant and ask to speak to a manager though so you could make a pre set menu

Do you have high chairs if I brought my child?

Yes!

Is there TV's to watch football on sunday's?

Hello! We do not have TVs.

On a Sunday, may we order from any menu, or must we order from the menus available for the hours designated for "lunch," "afternoon," &/or "dinner"? I would like to have a dinner menu item for lunch. Thanks!

I am sure that they don't have some of the dinner items available at certain times, hence the different menu. I know there are some items that are available on both menus. If you want a dinner item, that is in the dinner menu, my suggestion is to… Read more

Do they have happy hour?

No -- at least they didn't on a Friday afternoon.

Is this a family friendly restaurant and do they have a kids menu?

This is a small plate Yucatán themed restaurant that is good for kids who are open minded. No chicken nuggets on menu. Otherwise, leave the kids at home and enjoy a nice night out with very good food & drinks.

When making reservations a $25 deposit is required per person but will be applied to your bill day of visit. The hostess was very kind upon check in and took us to the back where the 46 door is. She provided us a code and explained the time limit along with house rules. We were then told to knock on the door and proceed with the experience. Kudos to the owner as this is the only speakeasy in the OC that has a true speakeasy feel entrance. They had a gentleman open the peephole and ask for the entry code. Once we said the code we entered a really cool mine shaft area. The attention to detail was on point and I was impressed! We were then taken upstairs to a private bar where there are four tables of four so a max of 16. This makes sense as to why reservations are hard to come by. The only ding about seating is you are sat with strangers it is not a private table. Luckily we had a fun older couple at our table so it made the conversation more lively. Otherwise don't go here with an expectation of an intimate/ private date night. They also offer a limited food menu but looked very promising. However, we were here for a night cap so just dabbled in drinks. The bartender had a seasonal menu of 4 cocktails he created. He explained the drinks and then had us try each one with a straw. We then placed our order based on what we liked. He did say if we were not a fan he could create us our own personal cocktail as well. The old fashion he created was phenomenal! Overall, a cool little spot in the OC. Do wish they were open later as they do close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Once this resolved, the meal proceeded to be more pleasant. We started with the tom yum cucumber - a hit with family with its pungent fish sauce and tang. The dish paired nicely with the crunchy peanuts although we did wonder if the overpowering flavors of this made it hard to enjoy some of the other dishes later. The wings were decent - a generous, slightly Asian variation of buffalo wings. The charred beets were the best beet dish we've had - the smokiness paired with the incredible natural sweetness of the beet itself was such a delightful surprise - they almost tasted like a sweet potato. The fresh wasabi was an excellent subtle pairing for this dish, not at all spicy, just added the perfect herbal undertones Fiddleheads and speck was the most disappointing, it felt like something was missing, perhaps it was the low acidity in comparison to the other dishes. The fiddleheads also had an difficult astringency to them and was essentially 95% fiddlehead to 5% speck. The spring onion pancake was also disappointing - ours was soggy which made the soft on soft falvors with the trout schmear not so appetizing. Flavor was good but we wanted more textural contrast. Iberico pork secreto was delicious - an amazing piece of meat. This, however, could benefit again from a more flavorful sauce. We ended up dipping this meat into the tom yum cucumber sauce above (see other wayward comment above). We finished with the red bean cinnabon dessert hich was tasty - not too sweet, although we wished the red bean flavor came through more. It comes beautifully presented in its own mini skillet. Unfortunately, the pieces that naturally stuck to the side in the skillet had a pretty strong metallic aftertaste that was quite unpleasant. Would not order this again unless the plateware was changed.

All items were ordered for the first time at this visit except for the porridge which we have had many times before. The peach oolong tea was a disappointment as the flavor came from added syrup and you couldn't really taste the tea. We tried the BBQ Pork Puff Pastry because it had black char siu versus the traditional red char siu. The puff pastry was good and flaky. The Mapo Lamb Dip has creamy whipped tofu that could be spread on the accompanying pita. The Wonton Noodle Soup doesn't have the usual thin noodles one would normally expect. Instead, the noodles are thick and wavy. We counted 6 wontons for 2 each person. There were 2 bunches of baby bok choy. The Pork Belly Sesame Noodles had tender braised red pork and came with mustard greens. The whole prawns were well prepared such that it was easy to remove the shells that covered them. We liked the garlic sauce and the garnish of fresh cilantro. The kitchen tends to have a liberal hand when it comes to chili. We'll need to remember to tell them on our next visit to go lighter with the red chili pepper flakes. Service was seamless by Kim. Water glasses were refilled when half empty. Extra napkins were brought when serving chopsticks were delivered. Kim kept watch on the progress of the meal and we did not need to tell her that we were ready for the Cheese Lava Tarts which would need 8 minutes. Obviously with covid takeout i imagine if eaten fresh off the grill the sourdough would be crunch exterior melty soft. BUT even with a 35minute travel time home, the steam builds up inside so kinda soggy, it's still so yummy! so much wagyu beef so juicy plus the slightly spicy sauceOoMPh just slap me! the fries are like sliiiiightly spiced. meh. i've never been a fan of fat steak fries. too chonky. will try the tots next cuz who doesn't love fluffy crumbled tater tots!??? will update as i eat my way thru the rest but the big juicy dog is being eyed ---- Loco Moco burger $14 - is even better than opening week. It actually seems flatter now, buts it's every bit as delicious and better. which if you take into account you can't eat it fresh cuz u have to take it home (25-30min drive for me), then it would've been awesome right off the grill. It's downright juicy, oddly i love the frisée? it's like thinly crunchy which turns out really nice especially when it's seeping with whatever that thousandislandy looking sauce with the faintest of spicy hints (not actually spicy, the sweet savory juices drown it), however it makes the super soft bun mushy which makes your hands ultra messy (do not touch your phone or your face, that's how viruses get passed around). Egg was nestled in the center so when i popped it, the oozy goodness enhanced the already amazing burger. Comes with a side of polynesian mac salad which is nothing like blind rabbits truffle mac n cheese but this mac salad is cold with fun crunchy bits and a hint of a spicy kick. Banana Bread $8 - yo i do not know how they came up with this but this item is godly. the bread itself is good, dense, sweet like lvl3 delicious. but the explosive flight to lvl7 is from the super caramellyish thick sauce and the crunchy pieces of whatever sprinkled about. PLuS whatever that white cream is, all together is a super amazing experience. Saturn 2 for $22 - alright i thought this was the 1 of the 4 drinks that i liked from opening week. the online order thing is weird, it LISTED as 2 for $22, but when you add 2 to your cart, it charges you $44, so naturally i thought each order is a set of 2 right? so i order 1 (set) for $22. And that's where it got weird, the package contained 1 pouch which appears like 1 drink of saturn BUT they also gave me 2 ziploc bags of ice (1 of which was leaking), 2 straws, 2 sets of garnish (i LOVE that even tho its to go, they're giving you the garnish even tho it was 2 leaves and 2 flowers). Now with 1 pouch tho it's either you share the same drink (very anti-social distancing) or you bring your own glass to split it....and then ice+garnish it. anyways um...it's strong, like just out the front door strong, like beast claw just ravaged your face strong. every sip, i felt the tonic punch me in the face and i would fade away a little. The taste? really wasn't appealing to me, but i paid $22 for it so i'm gonna drink it fml. IT JUST wouldn't end though! i kept sipping and sipping and oh lord my face kept getting punched so i was like....alright let's just man up and down this sucker. BAD MOVE. X_X. Brain decided to take a 5 hour nap. Woke up...and ITS STILL UNFINISHED!!! Service: always a pleasure. For curbside they'll bring it out to the curb but the street doesn't really have per se like an expanded area to wait, so if you're there for long, you could totally be blocking traffic cuz people are turning into the small 2 becoming 1 lane street. And i hate idling my car, 10minutes of idling? We're killing the planet (and she's having her revenge now). Nah i'll park at the open lot and just walk over, i need the exerFRIES anyways. -apparently i saved this andnever posted I apology. Im coming back today and i anticipate itll still be awesome.

I spent my 21st birthday here and it was a great experience. What truly made it was the service…read morethat we received from Adrian and Sergio. They were absolutely wonderful and made great drinks. This was a truly memorable experience and the beef tartare was so good. If you're looking for good food, drinks, and a great atmosphere I highly recommend the blind rabbit and will be here again.

Found this place while searching for local cocktail bars close to the Anaheim Convention Center…read more It's located on the lower level of the Anaheim Packing District, which is made up of multiple businesses spread across a few different buildings. The Blind Rabbit is in building B (I think... 2 story building right off the main road). A reservation is highly recommended, as this spot can only hold about 30 people. As I went alone, my reservation was for a bar seat, which was cool as I was able to watch the bartenders make lots of very cool shaken and stirred drinks. This place serves absinthe drinks plus absinthe served the traditional way (cold water on sugar cube into the alcohol). I did not try that, but was tempted. My pineapple old fashioned (Retired Old Man was what Sergio (bartender) told me) was very tasty. The Tamerand Marg with mezcal that I tried next was just okay (should have stuck with the whiskey!). The ambience is great, but it is quite dark inside. Use the light under the bar top to read the menu. There is food available. I tried the crabcake and thoroughly enjoyed it! If you go looking for the entrance, look for the "boxes" stacked against the wall and the black bunny handle (next to a hostess station that may/may not be staffed). Photos were highly discouraged, so I respected their wishes and just enjoyed the moment. I hope you enjoy it too!
