I've known this spot has been around for a long time, and I noticed it's been receiving more and more attention. It's summer, so it's the perfect time to finally check this spot out. Parking: They're located in a high foot traffic plaza with a small parking lot so finding an open spot will be difficult. Ambiance/Environment: This is a quick grab-n-go location. No indoor seating. They have four outdoor tables. The donuts are displayed and labeled. Love the decor and vibes. Service: I was greeted immediately every time I entered. Everyone is courteous, quick, & efficient. Doughnuts & coffee: The donuts are surprisingly not overly sweet. Presentation is absolutely eye catching. Their flavors sound intimidating yet interestingly delicious, and it tastes even better. Their flavors sound drinks are a hit or miss. So far, I've only tried their mochas and lattes. Their drinks are sweet. If you prefer sweet drinks, then these are for you. Their cold foams could use some work bc it disappears after 20 min and lack some flavor. - S'mores Mocha (seasonal) - Brown Sugar Latte (seasonal) - Vanilla Latte (staple) - Donuts: Mango Sticky Rice, Potato Chip Streusel, Butter & Salt, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb Pricing: They're constantly offering seasonal donuts and drinks. Highly recommend downloading their rewards app. You'll get a welcome reward and many coupons.
Parking is in a shared lot so we had no issue finding any. Wow this place is so cute inside! Loved the vibe. The doughnuts looked phenomenal & had cute descriptions next to them. They all looked delicious. We sampled some & they were all great. The staff were very kind & service was fast. I got their drink special; the s'mores latte which was tasty with the foam on top. Very tasty. Price was typical for the area. Would definitely come again!

I love the unique flavors of Sidecar and how everything is made fresh in house! The Mango Sticky Rice collab with Van Leeuwen is definitely worth trying if you like the Thai dessert. While the donut itself did not have a ton of flavor, the mango sticky rice topping was delicious, and did not make the donut too sweet. I also tried the vegan Neapolitan and was shocked how that made that donut vegan! It was a strawberry donut, topped with chocolate glaze, vanilla whipped cream, and even a cherry. I really appreciate how the vegan option is a rotating flavor, and I can't wait to go back to try more. I've been wanting to try the Basil Egg Benedict donut, but never seem to get there in time before it sells out. So arrive early if you are in the mood for a savory flavor!

I stopped by on the 4th of July and tried their summer specials--the Passion Fruit Pavlova donut and the S'mores Iced Mocha--and both were absolutely delicious. The staff is always warm and friendly, the donuts are incredibly fresh, soft, and full of flavor, and the coffee never disappoints. They also typically carry a Vegan and gluten friendly donut option. Whenever I'm in the OC, I have to stop by for a donut... or two... or three. Definitely a place that's worth the visit every time!
The summer seasonal doughnuts are back, some favs are definitely the passionfruit pavlova! The balance and freshness of this passionfruit doughnut is incredible! Tastes similar to freshly made sweet bread filled with custard/cream. Service is always friendly and quick, along with great vibes all around. Def recommend trying all the new summer seasonal offerings!
When I'm in Newport Beach or Costa Mesa, I always make a quick stop at Sidecar Doughnuts. Butter and Salt is our top favorite. In season is the Buttermilk Strawberry Doughnut, used fresh strawberries and cake like dough.
Friendly and welcoming staff, clean establishment. Some donut samples are offered and they will cut another flavor if you ask. Free donuts on your Bday month (we live that). They are a bit pricey as far as donuts go, however, most of the donuts are large so it feels like a better value. Free parking, good size coffee selections and they sell swag.

My experience with premium donuts have been poor, but these one still reminisce a classic donut texture and flavor which I appreciate greatly. The banana bread latte was more of just a straight banana flavor, but it was good if you're into that sorta stuff. Overall, it's a small shop with standing room only and outdoor seating. The staff are attentive and helped/managed a large group of 15-20 people easily. They also give free samples to try!

Sidecar never ever misses and they have me hooked with their seasonal flavors. They have the best donuts, and I'm not even a donut person. I specifically LOVE their cake donuts. I could go on and on about them... seriously. This time we had to come try their collab with Cake Picnic, which was the golden hour grey donut. Let me tell you, it was bomb.com. The orange flavor was phenomenal and I have no notes. We also got the strawberry donut and hot chocolate with almond milk, both obviously very good as well. It was my first time getting the hot chocolate and I was honestly surprised with how yummy it was. It was not too chocolatey and not too milky. It was the perfect balance and the perfect pairing with the donuts.

I absolutely love Sidecar Doughnuts! I don't eat doughnuts too often because I don't always feel like they're worth the calories, but Sidecar is definitely the exception. These are incredible, especially when you get them fresh and hot! My favorite is the Butter & Salt doughnut. Pair that with a coffee and you really can't go wrong. I love that their doughnuts are light and flavorful without feeling overly heavy or super sweet. read more

I haven't been to Sidecar in years and this visit left me wondering why it took so long to come back. It was a bit pricey but I guess everything else is too, especially in OC. The samples of the chocolate and strawberry donuts were good, although I was not a fan of the strawberry, so I went with an old fashion glaze and a mocha. Nothing disappointed but I do wish they had a maple option without bacon or salt, just a fluffy maple like I had so many years ago. This is a small storefront with great customer service. There's a couple small tables outside to enjoy your donuts there, but most get it to-go. That's this critic's review, until next time, I'll be eating. read more
These donuts never miss! There's a flavor for everyone. I love their seasonal rotation with the blueberry and the classics like salt and butter (pictured below). Each donut ranges from $4-$7 and they have a range of donuts with different sweetness levels. The passion fruit is so fresh and natural tasting. I love passion fruit and the natural tartness of the fruit remains true. Highly reccomend their savory donut collabs, such as with prince pizza!! Their savory donut bites are usually limited to certain days but grab one if you get a chance!! read more
Really good! I've been here many times but I realized I've never reviewed this place. Of all times I've been here, it's no question a 5 star. The donuts were really fresh and hot when we got them. My wife loves the butter and salt one and it's absolutely perfect! The saltiness balances out with the richness and sweetness. I also ordered the golden hour grey, which was the seasonal flavor, and it was really unique. It was citrusy and light. Sidecar is definitely in it's own league and its tough to find other donuts to really compete with them. The store was pretty small with very limited seating at this location so it's more of a grab and go type of location. It's not too far from the beach though. Service was really efficient. Even if there was a line, it goes by quite quickly. It's worth it anyways! read more

I ordered online the huckleberry donut and mango sticky rice donut. Quick service and it was ready in no time. I would highly recommend the hucklberry donut, the dough itself was delightful and not dry at all, it had a really great base flavor and the frosting itself added a great taste. Mango sticky rice was just whatever, it was bland and underwhelming, definitely stick to the basics. I would comeback again to try their other flavors. Just very pricy... read more

Store was tiny but the placement of the donuts was nice to see them clearly. Service was quick. There were samples out to try, which was nice as a first timer. We got a 6 pack and the 2 I tried so far were absolutely delicious. Of course the price is expensive but I was expecting that with them being fresh and made throughout the day while also using quality ingredients. You can tell by the flavor! Super yummy! read more

I ordered the Mango Sticky Rice and Salted Malted Cookie Dough donuts. The Mango Sticky Rice donut was noticeably overdone--the bottom was burnt enough that it overpowered the flavors and left a bitter taste. The Salted Malted Cookie Dough donut was definitely the better of the two, but even it had a slightly burnt bottom. For premium-priced donuts, I expected much better consistency and quality control. The flavors themselves had potential, especially the cookie dough, but the burnt bottoms really took away from the experience. I've had sidecar a bunch of times that's why I went there, but this was a bad batch and is now making me think twice about there donuts. read more

First time at this donut shop and what a surprise. They have a very broad menu of item, from sweet to savory. Had to do a sampler so had the maple bacon donut, birthday sugar cake, butter & salt and the basil eggs Benedict. Everything was so good. My favorite was the Basil Egg Benedict. It was super busy on the weekends but worth the wait. Parking is tough but moves pretty quickly. read more

If you ever get a donut craving this is the place to visit! I got the Old Fashion and the blueberry cheesecake. Both donuts were flavorful, moist, and the epitome of what a donut should be. My husband wants me to mention that the icing on the blueberry cheesecake was "chefs kiss". The coffee was unfortunately not as impressive, but I'll let it slide haha. Service was fast. Sidecar Doughnuts and Coffee is located in a small strip mall. The parking lot in this part of the strip mall is pretty narrow, so be careful when parking. It was very busy when I arrived around 11am on a Saturday morning. There have a few tables out front which were all occupied. There were also quite a few people just hanging around in front of the shop chatting while eating their donuts. I went inside so I could see what was available, but they do have an outdoor window for ordering if you know what you want ahead of time. This is definitely the nicest donut shop I have ever been in. The display cases are attractive, and have nice wood paneling in front of them. Dark ceilings, cool light fixtures, and overall nice décor give it a classy feel. It is pretty small inside though, and it was so crowded I couldn't take a picture. Most of their donuts are not your garden variety types with names such as White Chocolate Banana Bread, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb, and Apple Pan Pie. When I first walked in, I could see they were out of a few flavors, but fresh ones were put in the display shortly after. They apparently make them fresh all day long in small batches. I picked a few donuts and proceeded to the register. Even though I only purchased two donuts, they still packaged them up in a real nice custom printed box. White Chocolate Banana Bread ($6.50) - Two of my favorite things, banana bread and white chocolate. The donut was still very noticeably warm, and had the freshest, most delicious banana bread flavor. The chocolate chips give it an extra little sweetness. The white chocolate glaze on top is just enough to be there, and not make it a sugar bomb. And the walnuts on top give it a little crunch. These are not large donuts, but they are pretty decadent. I was pretty satisfied after just one, and waited ten minutes before having the second donut. Strawberry Buttermilk ($5.00) - It was actually still a little warm, even though it was boxed almost fifteen minutes earlier. It was a great strawberry cake donut that was equally fresh and decadent. The chopped fresh strawberries inside give an extra burst of flavor with each bite. I was just out running errands on an empty stomach, and looked for the nearest donut shop. I just happened to stumble across the best donuts I've probably ever had. They are not cheap at $4.75 to $6.50 per donut, but after you have them, you realize the price is pretty justified. read more

A Doughnut Experience That Transcends Human Understanding Let me be absolutely clear about something: there are doughnut shops, and then there is Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee in Costa Mesa. These are not the same category of thing. Comparing the two is like comparing a kiddie pool to the Pacific Ocean. One gets the job done. The other one makes you bust. Nestled on E 17th Street like a well-kept secret that somehow 4.6 stars and thousands of people already know about, Sidecar has quietly, confidently, and without apology become the gold standard of doughnut craft in all of Orange County. No gimmicks. No neon signs screaming for attention. Just an unyielding commitment to doing things right. The moment you walk in, you understand. The display case hits you like a revelation -- rows of perfectly crafted rounds, each one a small, edible masterpiece made in small batches so everything is stupidly, almost offensively fresh. The kind of fresh that makes you question every doughnut you've eaten before this moment. Now. Let's talk about the Huckleberry doughnut. I have to choose my words carefully here because what I experienced defies casual description. That huckleberry glaze -- floral, tart, impossibly vibrant -- draped over a cake doughnut with a texture so perfectly fluffy yet slightly crisp on the outside that food scientists should probably be studying it. This is one of my all-time favorite doughnuts. If I'm ever asked to describe what a doughnut should taste like at its theoretical peak, I will close my eyes and think of this one. The coffee? Worthy of the doughnuts beside it -- which is saying everything but to me their normal drip is just okay, pretty standard. If you haven't been, that's a problem. If you have been and skipped the huckleberry, that's a tragedy. Fix both immediately. One of the best donuts ever created. Everyone knows it's a pretty iconic spot. Whenever I'm down in the area and I have time, I always try to stop by Sidecar Doughnuts. Their donuts are consistently delicious, and I love that they keep their classic favorites while also doing fun things--new flavors, seasonal specials, and plenty of creative collaborations. My two favorites are definitely the Celebration Cake and the Saigon Cinnamon. You also can't go wrong with the Huckleberry or the Butter & Salt donut. It's hard to pick a "best" because the quality is just always there, but those are the ones I find myself craving again and again. The staff is friendly every time, and parking is usually pretty easy. I also really appreciate that you can now order ahead and pick up, which makes it so much easier for me since I live kind of far away in North Orange County. If I think about it ahead of time and I know I'm going to be in the area, I'll absolutely place an order before I head over. I always look forward to the seasonal donuts and the collabs, and if you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend checking them out. Their coffee is also delicious, so if you're a coffee lover, you should definitely check it out too. Their donuts are awesome here! We love the huckleberry flavor and then their new one was the. French toast donut with what may be some Kellogg style crunchy cereal, some sweet cream topping and strawberries! All are good tasting!! Service is always good here and they have the lines flowing smoothly without any hiccups. All seem cheery and personable! This place is small but they accomplish all things fine! They do offer storefront seats and tables, just not a lot. Best if you just grab and go. Overall, yes! read more
We dropped by a little after 8AM on a Saturday morning, fully expecting to stand in a long line, but was pleasantly surprised to walk right in. The vibe is vintage classic; dark wood tones and hex-tiled flooring. The smell of butter, sugar, and coffee fill the air, but don't get too comfortable inside; a limited amount of dining tables are only available outside. THE FOOD. - Cinnamon Roll. Soft and pillowy, packed with brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans. Maple glaze tops this doughnut and candied maple pecans added a crunchy, nutty contrast. Highly recommend. - White Chocolate Banana Bread. Moist banana bread cake with chocolate chips inside and dipped in a white chocolate glaze. Toasted walnuts on top gave it a satisfying crunch. Highly recommend. - Old Fashion. Classic comfort with subtle notes of nutmeg and cinnamon. The vanilla bean glaze was lightly sweet. - Saigon Cinnamon Crumb. Bold cinnamon flavor and vanilla-glazed. It's aromatic, cozy, and perfect with coffee. - Biscoff Cookie Butter. The gingerbread cake paired perfectly with the Biscoff cookie butter glaze, which was rich and nutty. Loved the biscoff cookie crumble and powdered sugar on top! Highly recommend. - The Apple Pan Pie. Filled with apple chunks in a spiced compote. Topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel. THE DRINKS. - Caramel Latte. The sweet, smooth caramel balanced well with the espresso. - Coffee. Strong, straightforward, and exactly what you want alongside a box of doughnuts. THE PARKING. The shop sat at the corner of a large shopping center, and while the immediate lot could fill up, more parking is available nearby. Parking was free. THE VERDICT. Classic and specialty doughnuts that are well-executed. Is it worth standing in a long line for? That depends on how much of a doughnut fiend you are. Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee is a popular spot for a reason. The donuts are simple, classic, and done really well. You can taste the quality in every bite -- fresh, soft, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. My favorite was the donut with bacon. The combination of sweet and salty is so satisfying, and the bacon adds just the right amount of crunch and smokiness to elevate it. It's indulgent but not overwhelming. You also can't go wrong with a classic blueberry donut. It's soft, slightly dense, and packed with blueberry flavor, with a light sweetness that makes it easy to finish before you even realize it. Incredibly aesthetic hole in the wall. There is no seating inside, but there are two small tables outside. Service: 5/5. These ladies are polite, efficient, and run the place like a well oiled machine. Fresh donuts came out consistently in the few minutes we were in the shop deciding what to get. SIGNATURE DRIP COFFEE: 3/5. A little burnt. It's coffee. BUTTER & SALT DONUT: 5/5. Sweetness offset with rich and savory. Everything I want in a pastry. STRAWBERRY MATCHA DONUT: 3/5. I don't think these were as fresh as I've enjoyed in the past- still delicious. Definitely a difference though in taste and quality. Delivery is a nice feature so thank you so much for offering that. Only downside was we for the wrong order. We'd made two orders: one to a colleague's work for their staff and one to our office with the corn cake jalapeño donut. TLDR: butter&salt = love their cake donuts are really good when you eat them right away. after a couple hours, they lose that special amazingness. After first trying them, I went 5 times in 2 weeks.. I only get their butter & salt ones now - it's so perfectly buttery, salty, and sweet. Their raised donuts are too dry and bready in my opinion. The matcha is also a no. When they had their pizza collab, life was goooood. Hoping to try some other savory stuff soon. read more

I work at Sidecar and no, they are not safe for celiacs. They do not contain any gluten, but there is a chance for cross contamination as they are fried in the same oil as the regular donuts.
