I was walking home from CVS on Baker and Fairview in the morning, and decided to stop in DK's Donuts to inquire if they made ham & cheese croissants. From past experience, the best ham & cheese croissants came from good ol' mom-&-pop donut shops and it had been quite a long time since I'd had one. To my surprise and excitement I realized this place is not just a donut shop but a hidden gem for savory breakfast "pastries" and sandwiches as well. Their ham and cheese croissants are quite large pillows-of-buttery heavy (yet delicate if that makes sense) dough soft on the inside, and beautifully crisp on the outside. It has that unmistakable, old-school donut shop magic--warmed gooey melted cheese, savory deli ham in a buttery & flaky croissant that sheds flakes into the bottom of the old school bag, and satisfying enough to carry you for hours. I ate half on the way home and was excited to eat the 2nd half the next morning. Throwback music! Basically feels like a mom and pop donut shop. Kind of feels like stepping back in time by 20 years (in a good way; please give me my bottled nostalgia). Donuts are exceptionally crisp without being oily. I've tried the chocolate old fashion fresh with soft ganache spilling off of it. If you can get it then it's worth all the calories for sure! My normal order is a maple bar or glaze twist with a large coffee (comes out for less than $6 and it's cheaper if you pay in cash). This place is so good! It's next to MoguMogu and is open 24/7. The woman is very friendly and gave us free donut holes too. We came during dinner time and there were still many donuts fresh and available. We got the maple buttermilk and cronut which were both incredible. The maple buttermilk has a frosting that's crisp and not too sweet. The cronut is crispy on the outside and doughy in the inside. It's a small shop with no seating but perfect for a quick takeout. This has to be the best cinnamon roll I've ever had and I've had cinnamon rolls up and down the California coast. It is midnight and they have fresh cinnamon rolls. The ring donuts are far superior to their bar counterparts. Somehow the rings were even more fluffy than the bars! This donut shop is it. We came upon this place because one night I had a sudden intense craving for banana bread, so my husband called around and found the next best thing which was banana muffins. Came here after eating next door at Mogumogu. Looks like a normal hole in the wall donut joint. First time I had a flat Apple fritter, which was really good. Also had the old fashioned which was even better. But the star of the place had to have been the little old lady (most likely the owner) who was just so pleasantly nice!
