Open faced CTA on an onion bagel

I lovvvvve the open-face CTA on an onion bagel with lemon pepper on the side! It was YUMMY, and I can totally see why this place is busy on a weekday morning. The ingredients tasted fresh, and every bite was perfect. The flavors came together so incredibly well that I was already thinking about coming back for another one. One tip: order online to skip the wait!

Nova Lox and egg bagel with chive cream cheese
Angie Y.

We got the egg bagel with chive cream cheese and the nova lox on a cheddar jalapeño bagel to share with a friend. Both of them were really good. The jalapeno on the bagel gave the nova lox a little spice kick which was perfect. There are onions and you will have some onion breath afterwards so make sure you bring a mint or something. Since we had half half of the two, having the egg bagel while also eating the lox was the perfect combo since the lox did get to be a lot of flavor at times. Theres sitting areas inside and a little outside too.

Looked so good except my bagel is completely burnt breakfast ruined
Ashley D.

Really disappointed with my order. I ordered this through DoorDash and was so excited for my bagel, but it's so burnt. They tried to hide it with the toppings but you can taste it immediately. It was completely inedible and tasted horrible. I ended up wasting $16 on breakfast I couldn't even eat. Really frustrating and definitely not what I expected.

Californian on an everything bagel minus tomato and red onion with bacon
Jennifer J.

Stopped by for breakfast before heading to a conference for breakfast. We beat the morning rush and got a table inside. I had the Californian on an everything bagel, minus the onion and tomato with bacon. It was delicious. The bagel had a chewy outside with a soft pillowy inside. The place was clean with seating inside and out. It is evident thst this is a local shop as customers greet the employees by name. I will definitely be back or be sure to visit their other locations.

Californian on Everything Bagel
Michelle N.

Cheated on my favorite bagel place and tried this place out! I got the Californian with Everything Bagel. By the time I got to it, it was a bit dry and could've used more flavor. There were so many options to choose from, so maybe I'll go for a bagel with different fillings next time that might work better together.

I absolutely love Shirley's! Some of the best bagels in OC! Cinnamon raisin Cream cheese bagel! They have a good amount of cream cheese! Can be a MISS with the cream cheese sometimes (can bed to light) On the weekend - it's always crowded! Locally loved!! Seating is decent but don't expect seating on crowded days! Unless you're patient.

Pesto Florentine
Alisha S.

Got a pesto florentine on a sourdough bagel and a santa fe on a garlic bagel. Both were incredible, however the iced lattes were not good at all. 4 stars because of the lattes, but otherwise would give it a 5 for the bagels!

The service from this fine gentleman named Daniel was spectacular. He gave me a pizza bagel to try on the house. Also, the bagels are fire and they loaded my bagel up with Schmear.

Came back to this spot for their delicious Santa Fe Breakfast Sandwich on the Jalapeno Cheese Bagel. This spot get busy, so order online for pickup if you can! I think the last time I came, they put my in person order with the phone orders and we were waiting for a long time even after our order is ready. Other than that, the food itself is soooo delicious!! The chipotle sauce in the bagel sandwich is to die for!

Salmon lox sandwich to go
Deb H.

I prefer the Costa Mesa location on 17th Street to this Shirley's Bagel location here in Newport because I like to get the Salmon Lox sandwich and sometimes (like today) the salmon lox is very fishy and tastes stale :-( The bagels and cream cheese are always good at this location I just wish the quality and freshness of their salmon lox was better.

This is by far one of the best places to get a bagel. The bagels are always amazing and the Californian and the open face CTA are delicious, everything is made to order. It is a smaller place so not alot of seating but some so keep that in mind. They also do get busier on the weekends. The customer service is unmatched and they always greet you with a smile. The service plus the food make this place one of the best places to get a bagel. Lots of variety, they have sweet treats such as muffins and cinnamon rolls.

Egg, cheese, and meat bagel
Daisy G.

The bagels were good here and the cream cheese was nice and smooth. The eggs actually tasted like actual eggs, not like the watered down eggs you get from most bagel places. Ordered in person around 9:40, a wave of people (8-10 people) came in after and ordered and left before us. Turns out they accidentally put it under a phone order so our bagels were just sitting on their behind the counter shelf for about 10 minutes. We ended up getting our order after 20 minutes of ordering. The bagel sandwiches were delicious but would probably be more fresh if we had gotten it right away!

Probably one of the most expensive bagels in OC but they offer fresh toppings and the bagels themselves are delicious.

And that makes Mario's Butcher Shop (which opened just a few years ago) all the more remarkable. Chef and owner Mario Llamas honed his craft as executive chef at an Argentine steakhouse in Guadalajara, Mexico, before settling back down in Orange County. His namesake restaurant offers a full butcher selection, plus an eclectic sando menu ranging from Argentinian roast beef to Italian hoagies. Over a few short years, Mario's has earned features by the Los Angeles Times and Eater, and it has the loyal customer base to back it up. Mario's occupies the far end of a bustling Newport strip mall, otherwise highlighted by boutique fitness centers and spas. The industrial-chic interior is clean and minimalist. The concrete floors are polished, and the muted walls are decorated only with a single flat screen and a single framed photograph. To the left, the line loops around a merch counter. On the right, the butcher display is lined with Dodgers' bobbleheads. Industrial fridges are filled with gourmet sauces, broths, and meats (including lobster tails and veal brains). Wicker barstool chairs are pressed up to the narrow lightwood window counters. Eighties rock plays respectfully around the room. Outside, patio furniture lines the perimeter of the restaurant. My fiancee and I visited Mario's for a pre-beach bite, and we hit the weekend lunch rush. We opted to split a Pastrami on Rye and a Steak Sandwich with provolone. The pastrami sando fully met my expectations. The reasonable portion of meat was sandwiched between two slices of sturdy, thick-cut rye. While the spicy brown mustard added a mild bite, I enjoyed a side of the horseradish-forward Russian dressing for some extra zing. In contrast, the steak sandwich was disappointing. The steak was tender, but the oily chimichurri was one-dimensional in flavor and turned the bread into a mushy mess; the romaine and tomato felt like unnecessary space-fillers. The line was long, but the staff efficiently churned through orders. Each sandwich was $20, and the standard portion size felt satisfyingly filling. My fiancee and I agreed that the steak sando was a forgettable dud, but the pastrami was worth the wait. I wouldn't go out of my way to pay Mario's a repeat visit, but I could see myself popping in if I'm already in the neighborhood.

The sandwich selection offered a great variety of options and instantly reminded us of some of the delis we visited in Italy. The employee mentioned that fresh focaccia would be ready in about 10 minutes, which was a thoughtful heads-up and definitely worth the wait. I ordered the Carissimo, while my husband--who tends to prefer simpler flavors--went with the Not a Muffuletta without the olive salad. At first, the price for two sandwiches felt a little steep, but after taking a few bites, it felt justified. The focaccia was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. If I had one small suggestion, it would be slightly thinner bread to let the fillings shine even more. That said, both sandwiches were delicious, satisfying, and surprisingly light while still filling. As with many spots on Balboa Island, seating is limited, so I'd recommend planning to take your food to go and enjoy it on the beach or at one of the nearby benches. Overall, though pricier for a sandwich, this is a wonderful addition to the island and a great spot for a summer lunch.

I recently ordered the Seasonal GOAT with Pink Lady Apples Salad, and while the ingredients were fresh and the salad tasted good, the portion was incredibly disappointing. I understand that promotional photos are styled, but there should still be some consistency between what's advertised online, displayed in-store, and actually served to customers - especially given the price. I've had much better experiences with portion sizes at other Mendocino Farms locations, which makes the inconsistency here even more frustrating.
