It's got roast beef, mushrooms, marinated cream cheese, jack cheese, onions, and pepperoncinis on a toasted French roll. That's how you can oder it. For me I skipped the onions and added mayo just to switch it up a little, and as always, it was amazing. The bread had that nice toast on it, a little crispy on the outside but still soft. The roast beef was stacked in there, super juicy, with all that melted cheese just covering everything. You can see the mushrooms and peppers mixed in, and it all kind of blends together in every bite. It's messy as heck with all the juices soaking into the bread, but soooo good. Kurt and his team took good care of us and gave their recommendations, which were the Surf Bird with turkey, avocado, bacon, and cream cheese and the Malibu which is their pastrami sandwich. You can tell they use the freshest ingredients and quality meat. Probably one of the best pastrami sandwiches I ever had, and they use the same pastrami as the iconic Langer's Deli in LA, which makes sense! Every bite was just so good, I can't recommend this place enough. Bonus points for the cool patio they have with a pool table + $2 draft beers EVERY FRIDAY! Oh my goodness that was delicious. Lets start with Elana and the Service. 10-10 ,she was very helpful and knew the Menu so well I took her suggestion and it was instant appreciation. I had the Malibu Sandwich and when I tell you it was a hit, it is as instant. The Garlic Bread was a perfect choice to hold everything together. The Pastrami was tender and flavorful. The Avocado gave it a different but delicious texture that has to be experienced for yourself. This might have been my first time here but certainly not my last. WOW their sandwiches are great!! Have been looking for a great sandwich shop in Costa Mesa/newport and I think I've finally found it. They cover two of my most important conditions for a good sandwich: flavor and size. The Surfin Bird was not only super fresh and delicious, but GIANT! Definitely worth the money especially with what places like Jersey Mike's/Mendocino Farms are charging nowadays! I think our favorite was the Malibu which was a super simply pastrami sandwich with avocado, but they have to put something in there that just takes the flavor to the next level. Aside from the food, the employees and owner are incredibly kind and the entire atmosphere is so lovely. Since it was Easter, not many places were open, so we were thrilled to find this spot open--and even more thrilled once we walked in. Parking was super easy, and the walk-up setup was convenient. I got beach/surfer vibes in here. Food: I ordered my own custom sand which since I am a but picky with flavor combos. I created a turkey and avocado sand which with wheat bread. The shop has a lot of creations and signatures that they are known for so i would def recommend trying those! All of the sandwhiches come with heir staples (pickles, mayo, mustard, onions), and can be ordered with a roll or sliced bread. Price: They have full and half sandwhich options, but my order automatically was a full which came out to around $11-13 for the whole thing. The other sandwhiches were in this range as well. California style sandwiches are often underappreciated in the sandwich world but I'm a fan. Sandwiches born of surf culture. Can't go wrong. Similar to Board & Brew. I tried the turkey with cranberry on wheat. It had spinach, cream cheese, sunflower seeds and mayo as well. Feel like the mayo was excessive and almost ruined it. No need for mayo and cream cheese. Similar to my usual from Board & Brew which is turkey, cream cheese, and sunflower seeds on squaw bread with alfalfa sprouts and their special sauce. Board and Brew's rendition is superior. Alfalfa sprouts are nicer than spinach, the special sauce is tastier than cranberry, and the bread is much nicer. Still a great sandwich minus the mayo, though. I've also tried a turkey sub from here. Love the cream cheese but felt it was a bit heavy and wet. Kinda slimy, if I'm being honest. But this place can be really great and isn't bad. My favorite is an item off the kids menu. It's called the Beach Bum. It's a hidden beach classic if I've ever seen one. It's liberal amounts of crunchy peanut butter with dill pickle slices and Lays potato chips. Super strange but it's an all timer. The cold fresh acidity of the pickles helps cut the fat of the peanut butter and the chips really liven it up. I had an obsession with peanut butter and cheese when I was a toddler, which is completely gross. But the beach bum goes hard for the team. 5/5 on the beach bum 4/5 on the turkey cranberry (order no mayo) 3/5 for the turkey sub Give this place a go you might discover it's worth a five.
