    sakura mochi
    Yvi H.

Whenever I crave mochi, I head over to Kobe Fugetsudo. It reminds me of vacationing in Japan and shopping in the mall food courts which have tons of goodies. One of my favorites is this sakura mochi that I love to eat while drinking a bowl of matcha.

    Mochi - it's frozen...
    Akiko I.

**** Disclaimer **** They have tea, mochi, donuts, cakes, sweets etc. I was looking for mochi for my little Yelp buddy, and happened to find these "mochi" (rice cake in Japanese). This is the review only for their "mochi". ************************ - Locale Destination - It's on Paularino Ave and Bristol St in Costa Mesa. It's in "Mitsuwa" (Japanese supermarket) building - actually in front of the supermarket's registers. It's small yet full of "Japanese" sweets. The staff were Japanese and friendly ones. Parking here isn't good - full of dumb Asian drivers, very tight spacing between cars and limited amount of parking spots. So be careful. Payments: Drinks are cash only. You can use credit cards for everything else. Mochi Flavors: Tons - strawberry, darjeeling tea, taro, green tea etc. Something interesting, challenging, and unique ones. Very interesting. Mochi Price: Each small mochi costs $1.80 to $2 or so. It's kinda expensive, but the flavor quality is there. In the show case, you see lots of colorful mochi as you see on my pictures. But somehow they gave me the frozen ones, not from the show case. Why? I don't understand the business practice. They told me "it was frozen, so you need to thaw them a little bit before you eat them". I was skeptical whether if mochi would stand for freezing or not. It turned out it was OK. I left them in the fridge for a while, and the mochi got softer. - Gluttony Expedition - The texture of mochi is very similar to the one you get for "mango mochi" at "Phoenix" (Taiwanese sweet shop located all over the Asian/Taiwanese communities), not so much of ordinary Japanese mochi I could think of (thicker in texture for "daifuku" -mochi stuffed sweet paste inside). It's a lighter and stringier than usual mochi texture. There're various mochi textures exist in Japan, but this was a lot lighter than usual. The sweetness of "an" (sweet paste in Japanese) was very light. The flavors were very interesting and strong. Very interesting as a whole. Blueberry yogurt mochi: Lots of blueberry flavor with light "an" (Japanese sweet paste, not red bean paste since it was sorta white). Not bad. Darjeeling mochi: Sea salt cream like stuff had a Darjeeling flavor. It also had a light "an" (Japanese sweet paste). Very interesting textured stuffing. Good! Caramel pudding mochi - Custard cream with a hint of pudding sauce (barely taste it) inside of the soft mochi (rice cake). Not bad! - Conqueror's Deduction - Very light mochi with full of flavors. It's a bit expensive, but this is interesting. They have so many flavor varieties, so it would be great to get so many different flavors and share with your friends. Very interesting.

    ICED GREEN TEA!!!

Hey Tiffany! What is the best drink ever made in the history of mankind? Ummm! GREEN MACCHA ICED TEA FROM KOBE FUGETSUDO! It is always impeccably sweetened, nicely chilled, and only $1.20+tax! 5 stars because the tea is that awesome.

Lots of mochi desserts---I haven't try these yet but they sure look appealingly

The Churreria specifically has delicious churros, hot cocoa, and dipping sauces. I like to get the churro bites and 2-3 sauces to enjoy. There's a seasonal sauce right now guava which is delicious! I'm a chocoholic and always have to get a chocolate and caramel sauce. The line gets very long, as it should, since it is so popular. Once your order is in, you'll have time to wander the bakery and gifts sections to kill time. Personally, I like to watch the staff make the churros. It's fun to see how the magic happens with the machines and twirling. Northgate is great for everyone! It's huge, plenty of seating and even family friendly. Often folks go to the tv/dj area with multigenerational families to enjoy whatever big sporting event is on. Come for the Churros, stay for the liveliness of the Mercado.

I got the combo, which consists of 4 churros, a hot chocolate and dipping sauce. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to choose the type of hot chocolate but he didn't ask. He also didn't ask what type of dipping sauce I wanted. There weren't any customers either, so it's not like they were busy. The churros were made fresh and tasted great except there were some pieces that tasted gummy/still raw. It's crispy and the sugar isn't too sweet. The hot chocolate was pretty good but very sweet. It is also scorching hot. I burnt my mouth twice trying to drink it. The sauce - I wasn't handed or asked what type of sauce I wanted. I had to ask for the sauce, which I was redirected to the ordering counter where there was a stack. Would have been nice if they had just given it to me or asked what I wanted. There's no labels or signs at all and I blindly chose what I assumed to be the cajeta- caramel but it didn't taste like caramel. At first I thought it was expired due to the sour taste, but after tasting it again a few times, it tasted like apple sauce? I'm not sure what it was but it was interesting with the churros.

Sadly, the jasmine tea cheesecake was one of the worst desserts we've had. It tasted so unpleasant that we ended up throwing away what you see in the photo because we simply couldn't take another bite. The checkout experience was also a little unusual. The cashier told us the credit card machine wasn't working, so the only payment options were cash or sending a Zelle payment directly to the owner. There was a small handwritten sticky note with an individual's name and phone number for the Zelle payment, which felt a bit odd. To be fair, there wasn't a large selection available when we visited, so it's possible they have other pastries or desserts that are much better than what we tried. However, based on our experience, the item we purchased was disappointing, and the $12 definitely didn't feel well spent. On the positive side, the décor and overall aesthetic were lovely and were probably the bakery's strongest feature. But as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover... and you can't judge a bakery by its ambience either.
