This is a solid Chinese restaurant in Pleasant Hill. Their lunch specials are offered daily. The dishes are all around $5 - $7 and include soup of the day, steamed rice and the choice of an egg roll or won ton. You can substitute chow mein or fried rice for the steamed rice for additional $1. I ordered the crispy ginger chicken with chow mein and an egg roll. The soup of the day (egg drop) was tasty and perfect for a cold and rainy afternoon. The egg roll was a bit bland filled mostly with cabbage and a bit of carrot. I understand that they need something that appeases vegetarians but I felt like it needed something more. The crispy ginger chicken was flavorful but didn't have nearly the amount of ginger that I would have liked. The chow mein was okay, fairly standard as far as chow mein goes. I've been to Ming's twice, both times lured in by friends and fellow Yelpers who can't say enough good things - I wasn't mega impressed the first time, but fool me twice, shame on me. BF and I came in for Sunday lunch and were seated quickly. The inside of the restaurant remains pretty and I very much liked their updated modern menu. And lucky us, the very first page listed the lunch specials, served Tue - Sun. With an average price of $5.75, it sure seems like an unbeatable value. I decided to order the famous Crispy Ginger Chicken with steamed rice, BF got the Kung Pao chicken with fried rice. We had barely finished saying our orders, and our server was literally walking away while we were still talking to him. I had to stop him so I could add a dish of potstickers to our order, and we could not stop him from running before we were able to order drinks, nor did he ask. We were a bit dumbfounded. BF was able to stop him as he walked by and ordered his drink, and I went to order mine and again this guy walks away quickly and didn't even look to me for a drink order, or offer. Come on - general server courtesies? In the meantime, another server brought us glasses of ice water that were SLAMMED down on the table. Wonderful. BF finally had to walk up to our server to order my drink. Our soup came first, bowls of hot & sour which I'm generally not a fan of but I found theirs quite tasty. And despite a note on their menu saying orders of potstickers take 10 minutes, we received them maybe 5 minutes after ordering them. Blazing hot but tasty, though my criticism from my original review remains - tasty fillng, but they are borderline deep fried which makes them greasy and texturally unpleasant. Our lunches came and were very generously plated. This epic ginger chicken ended up being exactly what I feared it would be - small pieces of fried chicken in a sweet coagulated sauce. Ginger flavor was there, but was not dazzling, and there was sadly no vegetable counterplay. BF's kung pao chicken was spicy, savory and well cooked, but I've definitely had better. Their fried rice, assuming what comes with the lunch specials is the same as an a la carte order, is rice with egg. No veggies, no meat, no herbs, no seasoning aside from soy sauce. Absolutely nothing craveable OR raveable going on here. Last straw: BF finished his plate and a server came to clear it, and after picking up that plate LEANED HIS ARM IN FRONT OF MY FACE to grab my soup bowl. I was mid-fork-raise and had to pull my face back because his arm was centimeters away. And when I pulled my face back he took it as his cue to lean over even more and closer to my face. That is BEYOND rude, and an unforgivable server move. I had no interest in finishing my meal after that - I let them clear my plate, and we paid and ran. Certain things can be forgiven, especially if the food is truly fabulous. But I have most definitely had tastier Chinese elsewhere. If I can beat the food AND staff friendliness across town, you better believe I will. So I'm done with this place. Based on the reviews of others, it doesn't seem like I will be missed, which is fine. All I can say is wow. Reading so many great reviews, highly praising this place and all I keep thinking "What do they see that I don't?" The place is small but charming and I love the fish tank at the entrance. We were seated, and then a few minutes later we had our order taken. The waiter started walking away almost immediately and the gf had to stop him so we can continue ordering. He walked away in a hurry and then we realized he never even took our drink order. When we dropped off the soup I asked for for a diet coke which he happily obliged, but never thought to ask her if she wanted anything. I finally ended up just going to the counter and asking them up front for her drink. We ordered from the lunch combos on the front of the menu which included hot and sour soup. The soup was good and the best tasting dish of our lunch. A few minutes after the soup was delivered the pot stickers showed up. Six plump pot stickers that looked deep fried. The pot stickers sadly didn't have much flavor for me. It tasted very bland. The filling was OK but I've had much better. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken with fried rice. For the cheap price of the lunch combo you get a ton of food. It all looked good and I was ready to dive in. Again though, lack of flavor. The fried rice was nothing but egg and rice. The chicken was bland and boring. The best tasting item on the plate were the red and green peppers. About halfway through our lunch we exchanged plates. I think we both needed a break from what we ordered. So I finished the rest of the Crispy Ginger Chicken. Honestly I found it better then my Kung Pao Chicken, but it tasted more like something you would buy in the frozen section at your local store. Just so not impressed. Though the food wasn't good, it wasn't god awful either. I have had much worse tasting food but the reason Ming's get's 2 stars instead of 3 was the final sin of our server. As gf is eating, he reaches his arm over her plate, to pick up empty dishes on the other side. You just do not do that and there is no excuse for it. The steam rice wasn't that great.. didn't looked washed before cooking. Almost every grain had the black on it and super dry/hard pieces in every bite of it. The cashew chicken was decent flavor at most, personally Panda Express was better, so that something for lack of any flavor! The chicken it self was thin, chewy and undercooked. We were there on a Wednesday night, not exactly a big time to go out. And still the place was full. That's what happens when you earn a reputation for good food. Tonight we had a couple items for takeout. Delux chow mein and Wong tong soup. The soup was good no complaints flavorful and good. The chowmein was plain just awful no flavor at all bland and very dry. I would rate this below Panda Express and that's not good. I do not like to write a negative review I try to only write good or very good reviews or in this case a bad review as I don't want to see people spend money on a bad product. Five stars for a Chinese restaurant? Well, this one is actually worth it. Decided to go here based on Yelp reviews (thanks guys) and am so glad I did. It's a little out of the way for me to get to, but it is hands down my favorite Chinese food restaurant in the area. The food was fresh tasting, well prepared, the wait staff was efficient and courteous, and the owner obviously loves what he does and is very proud of his restaurant. When we were leaving, he took time to show us all the awards he has won and followed us out the door thanking us for coming. Talk about feeling like royalty. the good: The food we had was prepared very well. Flavor was great, all the ingredients were fresh and the portions are great for the $5.95 price tag. The restaurant itself was clean and well-appointed. The furniture all looked like it belonged in a nice house and not a restaurant. the Staff was fast and must have refilled my water glass no less than 5 times without me having to ask. And the price was well worth it for the soup, main course, and egg roll. The bad: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The mediocre: One of our lunches came out about 2 minutes after the other one, but that is really reaching. Overall: Wow. Makes other "upscale" Asian food restaurants (e.g. Uncle Yu's) look way overpriced and hardly worth the exorbitant prices. First time here and I'm just going to say that this is the best Chinese food I've ever had since moving to concord about 10 years ago. I've tried so many places but this tops them all. Food was excellent and priced well. Wonton Soup- never liked it until now! It has good flavor and not overly salted. Vegetable Fried Rice- amaaaazing. I loved every bit of it. Not greasy or bland. General Chicken- crispy chicken coated in a nice sauce. The waiter said it would be spicy but it wasn't and I was okay with that. No weird chewey pieces or textures. Beef and Broccoli- this is what my boyfriend ordered and I'm not a fan of this dish anyways so it's the only one I didn't care for. The beef was thin and kinda chewey, but they don't skimp on broccoli that's for sure! All this and a beer for $35 (before tip). I was shocked and I already can't wait to bring my family here! After reading articles about e coli and lemons in water at restaurants i'm about as leary about them as bedspreads in hotel rooms and handles of shopping carts, but enough about my justifiable paranoia! Bathroom was small, size of a 1/2 bathroom, but the sink had a nice fancy bowl and spout and it was separated by another door from the restaurant AND best of all it was clean. Service was quick, water refills and checking back to make sure things were good, was timely and unobtrusive. They run this place like a well oiled machine. Tonight was our third time at Ming's. We've never eaten in house, always to go. The first two times were pretty damn good. Probably 4 star worthy. Tonight was a disaster for their kitchen. Almost everything was off. Egg rolls - These were comically poor. 99% cabbage, zero flavor. Kung Pao- Wife knows her Kung Pao chicken, and she said it was poor. Almost no heat at all. MooShoo Pork- I'm getting angry just writing this. Like the egg rolls, it was almost all cabbage. Very little pork. Pancakes were basically tortillas, and awful. Beef Chow Fun - This was a lazy man's dish. The noodles were all stuck together, and overcooked. Honey Walnut Prawns - These were actually pretty damn good. Sweet and sour chicken and Hot and Sour soup were very middling. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. I don't know if they had a sub in the kitchen, but it looks like they are starting to cut corners. read more

I went here for the first time today. I ordered from the lunch menu. The prices were not bad at all. I'd come back for the prices. And well, the food was good too. I ordered the Honey Walnut Chicken. I paid an extra dollar for the chow mein, well, because I gotta have my chow mein. It was quite delish. The atmosphere was nice with sophisticated touch. We got there around 12:30 and it was packed, but we managed to be seated. The food came out pretty fast, but it took a while to get our check. That said, I think the Chinese food is still pretty good--just don't expect more ethnic selections like beef tripe and chicken dark meat. *Sizzling Rice Soup ($6.95) is pretty good. Portion is enough for 4. The broth has water chestnut, a bit of pork and shrimps. Rice crispies are still hot when served. *Vegetarian Egg Rolls ($5.95) two giant rolls filled with carrots, cabbage, celery and silver noodle cut into eight pieces. Crispy and fresh. *Glazed Walnut Prawns ($13.95) are slightly overcooked. I think they fried the prawns all the way instead of halfway like they usually do in Hong Kong. Batter at Ming's a bit too thick. *Orange Chicken ($8.95) is a citrusy explosion of flavor. Lightly battered chicken pieces sautéed in orange juice and chunks of oranges. It's pretty good. I don't go out for Chinese food often, for two reasons: (1) I can cook it pretty well myself; (2) I'm fairly health conscious, and generally find restaurant Chinese food to be greasy and salty. That said, neither of these two reasons will keep me from Ming's. I'd be hard pressed to make better food than they do here. The hot and sour soup was the best I'd had in a long time, and all three lunch specials my colleagues and I ordered (sweet & sour chicken, happily family combo, and fish fillet with veg) were very good. Also, it's possible to eat really healthily here. You have the option of having your dish prepared "dry-wok style", in which they use no oil. They also use no MSG, offer brown rice, and indicate which chicken dishes are prepared with white meat. I'll be back (though probably not too often, since it's tucked away in a secluded area of Pleasant Hill), and would love to come here for dinner with a large group (now I just need to convince a large group of people to go to Pleasant Hill....). read more

This review is for a to-go order of the following 3 items: STRING BEANS WITH TOFU: This is really only ok, too salty and too much soy sauce, which tastes more like Americanized Chinese food. But in the Pleasant Hills area, this is probably what you'll expect. HONEY WALNUT CHICKEN: This is truly awesome! A+ .Chunks of lightly breaded chicken breasts were deep fried to perfection and coated with a super yummy sauce and served with mayonnaise. I highly recommend you try this if you happen to go there. YEUNG CHOW FRIED RICE: Good but not spectacular. The portion is generous and it's loaded with lots of sliced chicken breasts and bbq pork. The taste is again Americanized as one would expect in this area, but this is still very good by Chinese standard. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Pleasant Hill. I'm giving a rating of five stars because the service is excellent, the food is good, and the prices are very reasonable. The servers are very efficient and truly work together as a team to make sure my water is full, food is ready in a timely manner, and dishes are cleared away immediately. Lunch specials are anywhere from 5.50 to 5.75, and you need to pay one dollar extra to get fried rice instead of steamed, if that is your preference. Lunch specials are served with soup of the day but this Is always hot and sour soup, which isn't a problem at all because it is delicious. When I find somewhere I like, I normally have to try at least 5 or 6 menu items to ensure continuity. The results of the actual food review are below(pictures are included for each item): Hot and sour soup: Absolutely excellent. Some places have soup that is too hot, or too runny. This soup is viscous, but not too thick, it is very tangy and savory. General Tso's chicken: My absolute favorite dish to try at any chinese restaurant. This one was no disappointment, easily the best or tied for the best I've ever tasted. It was very sweet and savory. I always find myself getting so full because of the large portions! Honey Walnut Prawns: Wow.. The portion that you get is pretty gigantic.. most places give you much less. They had a honey glaze on them that had a good flavor. Definitely will be having this again. Lemon chicken: The lemon sauce was tangy and pretty good, but I expected there to be more sauce; Because of this, the chicken tasted overly breaded and bland, just like eating sweet and sour chicken and not dipping it in the sauce, wouldn't recommend this specific dish Stick with the Generals, you'll love it :P read more

Terrible, slow service. We've been waiting at least 1.5 hours for our entree. The waitstaff never checks on us. We had to wave them down, and were ignored. Finally, they served ONE entree. After 15 minutes, I went to the counter to complain. Our waiter saw me and said he would check on the second entree, which came a few minutes later. In the meantime, the first entree got cold. We came here on a Saturday night but luckily we had s reservation so we sat down rather quickly despite the crowd. We were initially deterred by the fact that most diners were not Asians, which gave out a bad signal this might not be authentic. Their menu also offers egg fuyon among other Americanized Chinese food dishes. Nevertheless, we decided to give them a chance. We ordered their walnut shrimp, crispy ginger chicken, black pepper beef, shredded pork with Chinese mushroom, Pork Chop Peking Style and Gai-lan in Oyster sauce. I think my table was really surprised in a good way. We really love the black pepper steak as it is very tender and peppery. The pork chop peking style is sweet and sour and lightly fried and the portion is generous. I also really like the shredded pork with Chinese mushroom. The crispy ginger chicken is their signature dish but I didn't find it special. Guess it is not my type of flavors. The owner Ming, was friendly and came to check upon us.
