Gobi is one of the restaurants we come back to often, as it is one of the only Mongolian BBQ places in the area. We're always pleased with the selection of ingredients. The vegetables are always fresh and tasty. Although it is no longer all you can eat, I have seen people pack their 2 bowls and make giant portions still (if you're looking for a larger serving). They have suggested recipes for you to use at the sauces which taste well, but you make your own dish regardless! It's always casual inside and a nice place to eat. Gobi is a great place to grab lunch when in the area (San Jose). I used to eat here often when I had a project nearby. The food is fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful. My reasons for not giving 5 stars are: -the quality has gone down, not sure why. There are less options for sauce to add to your bowl. I also remember the cook using sauce while heating your dish; not he just adds water to keep it from drying up. -Each table used to have a selection of hot sauce, soy sauce, etc. Now these condiments are found on a communal table. Besides that this is a good diner for me to get my Mongolian bbq fix. The cost is reasonable ($20 with a soft drink) and the food is fresh. The last time I had something like this was probably back in 2011 at my local mall. When we walked in, we were a bit confused on how to start since there wasn't clear instructions posted. It starts with grabbing two bowls, picking your ingredients, placing it on the counter for the staff to cook, and then paying. The lady who works here was very kind and offered advice on what sauces to use and how much since she noticed that I didn't add enough. I used to bring the family here, but those days are over. I recognize that under President Trump's tax increases and tariffs, food is more expensive than it was two years ago. I see it in my grocery shopping and in my restaurant orders. I sympathize and hope all these prices will drop once Trump's presidency ends. We'll see. Many grocery stores and restaurants have raised their prices and their businesses have been hurt. Some, like McDonalds are trying to win back lost customers with new promotions and special pricing. Good for them! Consumers should not be suffering alone. Unfortunately, Gobi has changed their entire pricing model by charging for everything. First, we were suspicious when we walked in at 1 PM and there were no other customers. All you eat is no longer a part of their pricing structure. You pay for your first order and an equal amount if you go back for seconds. (No lamb available, which is my requirement for Mongolian BBQ.) You pay for soda, which I expected. What galled me was that they charged me for an ice cream cone! Small cone and the ice cream was all runny. I don't recall seeing a sign that ice cream was extra. If I had, I would have skipped that. I've been going to the Mongolian BBQ place on Castro St. in Mountain View for probably 30 years. I think I will continue going there over any other Mongolian BBQ, no matter the driving convenience. Customizations to your dish is completely up to you! Add more or less of whatever tickles your fancy and the employees will cook all of the ingredients on a large flat grill. On entering, you get two medium sized bowls to fill with meat, veggies, noodles, and sauces. There are signs recommending which sauces to mix and in what quantities to get various flavors. It was hard to balance things once my bowls got pretty full, so I wish that we were given one bigger bowl instead of the 2 medium bowls but I guess that is for a reason. I also wish that the chefs added the sauces to your meal for you instead of spooning it into the bowl myself, I feel like I did not end up with the proper ratio of sauces. I appreciated the wide variety of vegetables and meats available for choosing, as well as the wonton chips that come with your meal! When I got to the oils & sauces, I put them only on veggies, thinking- they get mixed anyway! Well, I forgot how much water they use to help the cooking process! So my food came out a bit bland. I miss the days before covid. When this was all you can eat. It's still a great deal, but I can't help for long for better prices too. Been going to Gobi for around 5 years. My sons love being able to pick out what they want and making up their own sauces. I prefer different noodles so I'm just straight meat and veggies. If you eat there I believe you can get a second helping. Even for my teenagers boys 1 serving is enough. They like to fill up on the noodles. I hope people continue to go as we don't have enough of these options. I also miss Hồng Kông buffet in Fremont and don't want to see Gobi have the same fate. My coworker and I went here for the first time. Basically, you walk in, grab two bowls and fill them with all the meats, vegetables, and noodles you can fit on them and put the sauces on top that will be cooked all together on this huge, round flat top grill. I didn't put enough sauces, but they do have separate condiments you can put on your food, like soy sauce, chili sauce, sesame seeds, seasoning salt, etc. Otherwise, the food was pretty good. They have won ton chips you can help yourself to that are at the beginning of the line. At the back wall is a huge rice cooker with steamed rice you can have with your meal if you want. They have a self-serve soda and water machine. This area is where you get your utensils and napkins. They also have self-serve vanilla ice cream cones, which is two for $1. When you're done eating, you can leave your plate, etc., on the table and it'll get bussed by an employee. You just tell the cashier what you ate and drank when you're ready to leave. We got there about 11:45 am, and there weren't a whole lot of people; but by the time we were almost done, the line was to the door. This when they had a second person help with cooking the food. The cook is such an expert, how he cooks the food and then slides the food from the flat top onto the plate. Another good place to check out, and they're quick. I decided to try going to this place seeing it popped up in "buffet" restaurant joints. Upon arrival, I found out from a worker it is not a buffet anymore? It consists of people choosing two bowls for the price of an entree or one bowl for half the price. For people who want to do "2nd trips" for the bowl, they have to pay 3 dollars which is neat. This is the first time I have encountered a place that allows people to have two bowls at once, usually it is one per person. Knowing that, the choices are fair and simple, make it fit in the bowl and the contents are all yours after cooking. Since you have choices on how to prepare your bowl/s, if you know your flavors, you can self prepare a delicious dish. I do intend to come here every now and then, personally I don't see the need to buy two bowls for one person when its better to just stick to one. If you know how to make the contents fit properly, one bowl can keep your hunger at bay for a while. I also recommend people to bring their own drinks to save money. read more

I came here during dinner with my partner. We had just finished working out and were looking for a protein-packed meal. So we came here looking to stuff our bowls with meat. Similar to other posts about this place, we had a terrible experience with the cook. He looks absolutely miserable and is extremely rude. Just seems like he doesn't wanna be there and even told my partner (who was waiting with for my bowl) to go sit down. Like what? He even was pointing to his tip jar at us. If that wasn't enough, he literally took out meat from meal. One of my bowls was absolutely stacked with meat- like I'm talking about 5-6 tong servings. But when starting cooking my meats, he slapped it a couple times because it was so stuck it together and just slid it of the grill. It wasn't until I started eating until I realized what happened. At that point I just got up and left. If this place wants any chance of improving, it needs to get rid of that lousy ass cook. Completely unacceptable. read more

Not sure if they clean the hot plate everytime though. My noodles were a bit spicy even though I didn't put spicy sauce? Possibly from the previous order before mine? Pros: + Lots of options for veggies, frozen meats, and sauces! Very vegetarian friendly. My go-to items are the beef, water chestnuts, tofu, spinach, and the Garlic Taste Sauce! After tax, it's about $15 for one bowl. I am giving this 5 stars for a variety of reasons. We saw the rating on Google reviews after searching for Mongolian food. We went there around 6pm on a Friday evening and noticed the place was quite empty. We walked around the complex to see what else there was but ended up coming back to Gobi to give it a try. You are not going to get an elegant ambience when you come here. But what you get is something that is not found in most places. The place seems to be run by a wife and husband and possibly other family members. For $19, you get two bowls which you can then go and stack as much of the meats (thing slices of lamb, chicken, beef, or pork, shrimp, and a few other items), a wide assortment of veggies to choose from, tofu, and then several sauces that you add to the bowls for flavor. There are recipes on the wall to let you know what flavors and spice levels you want to try. Once you get the bowls packed and filled, stack the noodles on top as high as you want to and take it to the counter. The husband was the cook who takes the bowls and then cooks it on the circular griddle walking in circles and cooking the food. Once done in just a few minutes, he slides everything onto your dinner plate. Add a few more spices to your liking and take it to the table to start eating. The portion size you get for $19 is incredible. We could hardly make a dent in it so we took it home and going to enjoy it once again. The value in this economy is unfounded. The flavor is what you want to make it (my suggestion is to add a good amount of spicy oil to the bowl and several scoops of the soy, and garlic. Cooked white rice is included as well which you can self serve from the cooker along with fried wonton chips. Soda will cost you $2.50 for all you can drink and for an extra .50, you can get soft serve ice cream. For $3 more, you can get one more bowl of food to make. We could not believe that not many people were here however, this is a gem in the rough. The family is so nice and humble. I support family owned restaurants and definitely recommend coming here and supporting them too. This is truly the value play of the bay area. Oh no sharing so each person will have to spend $19. Remember this is not a fancy place to dine but the place is clean and the food quality and value and of course the fact that it is family owned makes this worth it. Inside was very quiet and the atmosphere reminded me of a somewhat dated 2000s decor, but there's nothing with that. The lady in the front was nice and clarified the ordering system as I had never been before. It's akin to the Genghis Khan in Great Mall, for those in the know. The food itself was alright, the meat and vegetables were mildly seasoned (as the staff did it for us) and the rice extra is free. As we got take out, I can't say much about getting refills but the noodles were nice and soft and the meat was perfectly cooked. One of the employees was extremely aggressive about telling us we could only do one trip. The ambience of the restaurant felt very intense so we thought maybe there was a change in ownership or management or something different but at the end of our meal, the lady that typically works front of house arrived for what we assume was her shift. So me and my friends came here for lunch, but a Togo meal. First off, the place is pretty clean for the most part , and there are so many different meats and veggies to choose from. The inside isn't super fancy but pretty basic, which is expectable for a Mongolian bbq. It is not a sit down restaurant, you start at the front and create your bowls. Then they cook it for you and you pay before you leave. Second, they grill it right in front of you, and it is just absolutely delicious. We had originally planned on going to another restaurant that was in this little plaza island, but I have a 1-Star waiting to be written about them soon enough. Anyway, we ended up here! So I don't believe that they allow indoor dining, but they do have some tables/chair set up outside on the patio. The food came quickly enough, and they saw that I was damaged, and were nice enough to bring out the food to me. A+ Service! I love it! I am not sure that they are not normally AYCE, but I have never been to a MBBQ that wasn't AYCE, but they are currently not doing that, as expected, because of this big, dumb COVID that just needs to go away already. I'm curious what this place was normally like during non-pandemic times because while I really liked my food here today, I was very let down that all you can eat was advertised on their menu and I didn't find out they weren't offering it until I spoke with the cook of all people. So that was a total bummer and that alone warrants two stars off. So I piled on as much meat as humanly possible into two bowls I was given and created a pretty delicious noodle dish. It wasn't bad for frozen meat. If you like spicy food, I suggest you ignore the recipe menu they have of sauce scoops to bowl ratios or whatever that was because I felt like I should've put way more hot oil onto my food. Still delicious nonetheless. I just wished I could eat all I wanted. I'm a pig and was led to believe this was all you can eat and wasn't told otherwise until it would've made me look like a complete prick to just walk out. Not cool. Game on. You have to stack the proteins correctly against the wall of the bowl. Then fill in the nooks and crannies with toppings and of course the veggies and toppings. Then top it off with however much noodles you can stack on top without it tipping over. Fair warning! The more noodles you add, the more sauce you should add to your bowl! The sauce and the amount of water they use while cooking it, will make the food seem "bland". But if you're piling with a lot of noods and small scoops of sauce, well, yeah.... 2 ice cream cones for a buck? What a deal. The ice cream did taste a little off vanilla. There is a froyo machine for vanilla ice cream (2 for $1) if you want dessert :) My only problem was the pitcher of water they poured on the food making the food extremely bland.
