Ft Bbq has been around for a decade or more. It is one of the only skewer places in San Jose without the glam and frills. Skewers are decently priced in comparison to the other skewer locations in the city. Parking is readily available in the plaza. Happy hour is from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm everyday. Some dishes are on a discount. Ordering is mainly done via QR code. All skewers were covered in the same seasoning. Overall tasty but can be boring after a couple of skewers. There are some additional seasonings on each table to change things up a little. The mushroom skewers were plain, so the seasoning really stood out to be crunchier due to the salt. Fishball skewers were soft. Most of the flavor came from the seasoning itself. The lamb and beef skewers were great. The meat textures were different and difference in meat taste was noticeable. Staff was friendly and will try to converse in Mandarin first. They can also speak English, so everything went fine regardless. During my time here, most people came to pick up their takeout instead of eating in the store. Came after a night of Mah Jong with a friend. Wasn't expecting too much , but wanted a bit of a snack prior to going home. A lot of places were closing but this place was still open till later so we decided to come here. I tried to like it, got my norm skewers, but they came out cold and on a plate, so nothing was keeping in warm. The server barely even talked to us. we had to keep flagging them down to ask for everything, He didn't' even mention what stick was what (we could of gotten something else for all we knew) It was not too bad of a price but not a good late night place for skewers imo. If you're looking for a good beef skewer place, this is it! Good meaty portions and the spicy powder and house made sauce they have on the side makes it taste even better. Rice definitely goes with it. Scan QR and place order via phone. They have a good menu selection but there's still a lot of things I haven't tried yet. I know there are so many skewer spots in the bay (more flashy interior) but this place just keeps it simple while still serving good quality food. It's nice that they open until late, so good for a late night meal. However, there might be one or two loud parties so it could get loud in there. Workers are friendly and attentive. During happy hour which was from 4-11 pm on the Saturday we went, you can get 10 skewers of certain items for around 20 dollars (depending on what item). Between the lamb, beef, and chicken skin, my favorite was the lamb. It was well-flavored and quite juicy. Aside from that, the beef could be a little bit dry but still tasty, and the chicken skin in all of its fatty goodness is nicely crisped up. Service is definitely no fuss; as soon as you enter if there's a free seat you can sit down and order via QR code. It took a short while because the lone server was busy, but water and refills were given. While the restaurant is small, it's definitely more of a drinking setting (skewers + alcohol vibe). Chinese skewers!!! I crave for these skewers once in a while, and this is my first time back since the pandemic started. Happy to say the quality is still the same if not better! I've been here multiple times (funnily enough, always with the same friend haha). Some of our go-to items are Taiwanese sausage, chicken skin, chicken gizzards, chicken hearts, and shredded potato. I also like the fish tofu and chicken skewers (surprisingly juicy!), and my friend enjoys the sugar buns (these are a bit too bland for me). Each skewer is around $2, so price wise it is not bad at all. But it can really adds up if you get carried away. I'd say 10-15 skewers for each person + a shared snack is a good amount of food. We like to order soju to pair with our food time to time, since this is great drinking food (so definitely on the unhealthy side haha). Minus one star because service always takes a while no matter how busy the restaurant is, plus the lack of variety in flavor since they use the same flavoring for most skewers. I like their ordering process - They give you a plastic menu & marker, and you mark what you want to order yourself. I like that this place is open late (1 am) and its super clean inside. I love coming here for the fish tofu, taiwanese sausage, beef/lamb kebabs and chicken skin. They all have the same spices but the chicken skins and beef tasted better with the spices they use which tasted similar to oregano and chili together. The beef skewers more tender than the lamb skewers. The lamb chop was more tender than the lamb skewers. Surprisingly, the lamb were not gamy at all. The chicken skins were crispy and best eaten at the restaurant vs to go. Staff were nice. Food didn't take long to get to the table. A bit pricey for small skewers with about $2.70 per skewer. They have a deal of $20 for 10 skewers of lamb or beef or a combination of the two. The chicken skin deal was 10 for around $18. Skip the shrimp skewer, just ok and only 2 shrimp per skewer which is quite pricey. The grilled bun was a good pairing with the meat. Love this place because they have chicken hearts as an option, not many places do nowadays. Been coming here for over six years and I have always enjoyed the dry rub seasoning on these skewers. There has been a lot of skewer places popping up, but I enjoy the dry rub seasoning from this restaurant the most. They do call pickup up orders which is great for to-go. Don't expect 5-star customer service because it's a quick "here's your food" and that's it-- experience, but I'm perfectly fine with that. It's straightforward and that's all I really care about when I want my food. I really enjoy the chicken hearts, but if that's too exotic for you I recommend the lamb and beef skewers. I definitely recommend to explore and try anything that peak an interest. The prices here are exceptional and MUCH better priced than the fancier looking places. I always find the hole-in-the-wall locations to be more authentic. Try it out-- if you like it, that's awesome! If you don't, then maybe you prefer a more aesthetic/visually attractive experience like Skewer Bar. If you're coming here, have an open mind. I've been going to this place for close to ten years, and I'm a bit surprised I never really left any reviews for them. Pre-pandemic this place was a solid drunchies location. They offered a ton of value for their skewers, and it was such a convenient place to eat. What I think they do extremely well are their chicken skin skewers and the Taiwanese sausage skewers. The Taiwanese sausage skewers are always sculpted very nicely and looks almost like a piece from a floral ensemble. Post-pandemic it's alright, it's still hanging in there, but prices have slightly gone up (not too bad though) though the portions are a tad bit smaller. The caveat about this place however is that they literally use their house cumin seasoning on almost all of their offerings, most notably their skewers. So you're going to be eating/drinking/burping their house cumin seasoning all day and all night long. The whole restaurant smells like it, the hand sanitizer has got some traces of it, the potted plants around the restaurant probably has some in its soil, I mean it's just ubitiqious. Luckily the smell doesn't hang onto your clothes too tightly as I've been able to air out my clothing just fine, but as much as I like them, I have had to really take a long cooldown from eating there just because of how winded I was from all the house cumin seasoning. We place our order for: Braised Chicken Feet Needle Mushrooms Skewers: Beef, Lamb, Chicken Cartilage, Chicken Skin, Chicken Heart, Chicken Gizzard, Chicken Wings, & Beef Tendon The braised chicken feet came out first and was not what we expected. The braised liquid definitely consisted of chili peppers but the flavoring was a miss- slightly bland & not good. The needle mushroom portion was an absolute joke and didn't come out until we were pretty much done with the meal. We literally had to flag someone down and ask what the status was. I love their spices. its not too spicy, but if you can't handle Sriracha, then maybeeee not. I heard this is more of a northern Chinese type of bbq place, so they have that type of seasoning.
