brisket with mac n' cheese and loaded potato salad

Dat Q BBQ be realll good. I saw them advertise on Facebook a couple of times but I basically live on the exact opposite side of the bay from them, so had to ignore my BBQ cravings. They just participated in an independent vendor event in Hayward, which gave me a good opportunity to have a closer place to procure some barbecue! It's an amazing deal for the taste, skill, and portions that go into the food. Love a good man trying to feed people with good food instead of someone just tryna make bank. A plate of brisket was $15, ribs $14, chicken $12, and pork belly burnt ends (a la carte) were $10. First of all, the burnt ends?!?!? Fire in the mouth. Fire and fat, more like. That smoky burn on them was phenomenal - it was caramelized, almost candied meat melting in your mouth mixing with fatty, BBQ goodness. Yum, next time I need two helpings of these... The other BBQ meats included two sides. The brisket was my favorite meat. Big slices smoked well, tender, forkable, and a good amount of fat. The chicken was pretty good and tender as well. The ribs were huge, but I had a dry piece. I can't fault them so much, as I think ribs are one of the harder meats to get just perfect if you're cooking en masse. What made these meats really good was the generous spread of BBQ sauce all over them - so tangy, sweet, smoky, and delicious! For sides, they only had mac n' cheese and loaded potato salad available. And geez, both of these things were loaded. The mac came in a huge block (they came straight from the pan they baked it in), and was so thick and cheesy. Great when reheated a bit! The loaded potato salad was, uh, far from a salad! I mean, it was loaded with EVERY caloric heavy item! So much sour cream was mixed into it - someone knows how to make people full... There was also a generous amount of bacon crumbles, and freshly chopped green onions mixed within. Very yummy, very heavy, and a very unique, creamy spin on the potato salad. Love the Q, and would come for the Q any time they're closer to me! For the value and portions of their BBQ obviously cooked with heart, Dat Q BBQ is definitely one of the best BBQ providers of the bay area.

Was able to book them for our corporate catering event in-house. We did individual lunch boxes. Evelyn was easy to work with and communicated well on a short notice. They were also able to put everyone's name on each of the boxes. The pricing included delivery and all of the utensils. We ordered chicken, ribs, brisket in varying combinations. They even had a vegetarian mushroom melt which people loved. Great food, good size portions and great pricing. Hopefully we can get them to cater again.

Met Dat Q BBQ at a Wine, Cigars, Jazz and BBQ event in Livermore a few weeks ago. The BBQ was amazing! We had the chicken and brisket with mac n cheese and beans. The event was that much better with Dat Q BBQ. We loved it so much we went back for seconds! This weekend they were at Longevity Winery in Livermore. We had the ribs and pork belly burnt ends, yes pork belly!!! If your looking for great BBQ, give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook to find out where they'll be next!!!

You can catch them at several farmers markets and their food truck makes plenty of stops across the bay. Their website BunBao.com displays their vast schedule of locations, ordering system, and more. I was able to catch their food truck (van) and try two of their baos, the braised pork belly and bbq pork, along with an order of sesame balls. I really like the texture of their bao buns, they're perfectly bouncy without being too soft or mushy. The taste is light enough to create balance with the rush fillings. The texture of the braised pork belly was soft and chewy from the fatty pieces. Both this filling and the bbq pork filling has a nice combination of sweet and salty. The sesame balls on the other hand had a very dry red bean filling. The paste felt very dehydrated but the outer dough was chewy and fried nicely.

The first time we got the bbq pork, XLB, and the custard/red bean buns. He gave us a 10% discount for buying three items at once. He had multiple recommendations for how to reheat but steaming is the best way. We really enjoyed those three items. So much so that we went back the next weekend to try more baos! We tried three other savory buns like the braised and the minced meat baos. The third time we also tried the sesame balls filled with red bean. They're about the size of golf balls. There are some items that were a great hit and others missed the mark for us. The ones we liked the most were the bbq pork, XLB, custard buns, minced meat bun. But that's personal preference. Everything tasted like it was fresh-frozen. Of course it's frozen. But it didn't taste "old". Since I heated them up at home I didn't encounter problems with the food being cold. Bunbao was a fun discovery. It satisfies the craving for baos and it's great they're frozen so you can stock up and enjoy whenever.

When I came back to them a couple years later, the price point had gone up & I was priced out.) The portion sizes were large. I think it was like $12-13/meal. 99% of the dishes were delicious. I was REALLY pleasantly surprised at the flavor & taste. I expected gentrified dishes. It was good! I was also specifically looking for meal delivery that generated less waste. Planter table delivered that. I got cool enough with my driver (and tipped well!) that he brought me a little thank you plant. I loved that I had the same driver each time. The food is still amazing and I'm happy to see the meal options have expanded, there's seasonal produce options and Acme bread, and now they post calorie information. They have family style option to get a bigger portion for those who have a family, or for me, to bring to a pot luck. They also have individual desserts and full size pies/cakes. Seriously - they have everything. They no longer offer wine for those who care. There are some additional pick up options, too, but I stick with Jack London Square on Wednesdays from 11:30-2:00.
