brisket with mac n' cheese and loaded potato salad

Dat Q BBQ be realll good. I saw them advertise on Facebook a couple of times but I basically live on the exact opposite side of the bay from them, so had to ignore my BBQ cravings. They just participated in an independent vendor event in Hayward, which gave me a good opportunity to have a closer place to procure some barbecue! It's an amazing deal for the taste, skill, and portions that go into the food. Love a good man trying to feed people with good food instead of someone just tryna make bank. A plate of brisket was $15, ribs $14, chicken $12, and pork belly burnt ends (a la carte) were $10. First of all, the burnt ends?!?!? Fire in the mouth. Fire and fat, more like. That smoky burn on them was phenomenal - it was caramelized, almost candied meat melting in your mouth mixing with fatty, BBQ goodness. Yum, next time I need two helpings of these... The other BBQ meats included two sides. The brisket was my favorite meat. Big slices smoked well, tender, forkable, and a good amount of fat. The chicken was pretty good and tender as well. The ribs were huge, but I had a dry piece. I can't fault them so much, as I think ribs are one of the harder meats to get just perfect if you're cooking en masse. What made these meats really good was the generous spread of BBQ sauce all over them - so tangy, sweet, smoky, and delicious! For sides, they only had mac n' cheese and loaded potato salad available. And geez, both of these things were loaded. The mac came in a huge block (they came straight from the pan they baked it in), and was so thick and cheesy. Great when reheated a bit! The loaded potato salad was, uh, far from a salad! I mean, it was loaded with EVERY caloric heavy item! So much sour cream was mixed into it - someone knows how to make people full... There was also a generous amount of bacon crumbles, and freshly chopped green onions mixed within. Very yummy, very heavy, and a very unique, creamy spin on the potato salad. Love the Q, and would come for the Q any time they're closer to me! For the value and portions of their BBQ obviously cooked with heart, Dat Q BBQ is definitely one of the best BBQ providers of the bay area.

Trays of black eyed peas salad, collard greens, Mac n cheese, corn on the cob

Was able to book them for our corporate catering event in-house. We did individual lunch boxes. Evelyn was easy to work with and communicated well on a short notice. They were also able to put everyone's name on each of the boxes. The pricing included delivery and all of the utensils. We ordered chicken, ribs, brisket in varying combinations. They even had a vegetarian mushroom melt which people loved. Great food, good size portions and great pricing. Hopefully we can get them to cater again.

Met Dat Q BBQ at a Wine, Cigars, Jazz and BBQ event in Livermore a few weeks ago. The BBQ was amazing! We had the chicken and brisket with mac n cheese and beans. The event was that much better with Dat Q BBQ. We loved it so much we went back for seconds! This weekend they were at Longevity Winery in Livermore. We had the ribs and pork belly burnt ends, yes pork belly!!! If your looking for great BBQ, give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook to find out where they'll be next!!!

When you enter and get seated, you will be prompted to go on the url code at the table to pick your items. While I understand that this is the new way for restaurants to serve guests post-covid, the vast menu items you have to scroll through makes me long for physical menus of the past - but that's just my boomer take for the day. There were a bunch of other items like rice and noodle dishes that looked interesting to pair with the meats, but we were only craving bbq so we skipped out on the carbs. We ordered a BUNCH of skewers, from the standard beef, lamb, pork belly to chicken skin and a fried quail. All of the skewers had the same type of dried chili powder spice seasoning mix so unfortunately there wasn't too much of a diversity in flavor profile but on the flip side, it allowed us to focus more on enjoying the meat quality itself (this is where rice or noodles would definitely help cut through the richness). All of the meats were incredibly well-cooked and charred. It is on the drier side, so be aware if you are looking for a juicier, plumper cut of meat that some other restaurants have. Paired with the Chinese vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil, they were super delectable. My personal favorites were the pork belly, chicken skin, and beef. We had some leftovers to go and the staff provided us some extra sauce to go so that's a big plus. Great food here and definitely will be back to try more of the other menu items for the full experience.

First, I ordered through the restaurant's online system hoping to dodge all of the DoorDash cuts so their people gets all the money. But their system put in a wait time at 30 minutes, which I somewhat already knew it was unrealistic. The restaurant then called me telling me that the wait will be 45 minutes which I said exactly this, "that's fine, I'll wait". When I showed up at the restaurant tried to retrieve my order after 45+ minutes, a waitress said, "oh, I thought you didn't want the order so I never put it in". Then I said, "No, I said I could wait; I even told her that I'd see you there" I kept my cool, but you'd think they'd try to fix what went wrong, but the waitress continue to proceed with, "no you'd still have to wait another 45 minutes". Didn't ask if I could wait or checked how long I've already waited. Again, I totally understand the chaos during a Saturday dinner and try very best to empathize with services. But also, I think the way it was handled is quite unprofessional and tone deaf. I don't think it was necessary for anyone to give me a call, if I ordered through the system, I wish there's a way for the restaurant to notify the wait time through their text/online system, just like their waitlist. If they really don't want people to flake on their orders, maybe take card deposits or text confirmation or something. All in all, I won't be going there anytime soon. Their business is doing well and certainly doesn't need our money.

I think because our expectations were low, the actual meal was surprisingly good so we left in high spirits. [[ Reasons why I can see the lower stars ]] 1.) We came in and there was no one there to greet us or someone visible. We almost thought we had to go sit down ourselves but eventually after a couple of minutes an employee showed up and told us to find a seat we liked. 2.) The place feels a bit rundown. Seats are kind of old and the ground was sticky in the area we sat down. [[ The Good ]] 1.) Although service initially started off kind of spotty, the actual employees were extremely friendly and nice. I think during the meal, 3 separate employees came to check up on us to make sure we were enjoying it. The person who sat us down was so nice too and gave my young toddler a full set of crayons and coloring paper so he wouldn't be bored. 2.) The food was surprisingly very good even though it wasn't very busy on a Tuesday. We got a 2-piece meat combo set for the both of us in the following configuration: a.) Pork Spareribs, Angus Beef Brisket, Mac N Cheese, and Cornbread b.) Pulled Pork, Angus Beef Brisket, Potato Salad, and Cornbread HIGHLY Recommend getting the Angus Beef Brisket in the FATTY selection rather than Lean/Mixed. The fatty version of it was perfect and so tender while the lean was a bit dry. The Pulled Pork was very soft and flavorful and would highly recommend this at all. All the sides (Mac N Cheese, Potato Salad, Cornbread) were so good as well with good portion sizes. I would skip the Pork Spareribs as I didn't find it very good. 3.) Restaurant itself is humongous with tons of seating and a lot of places to roam. My toddler was able to walk around after eating and explore without causing too much ruckus which I always appreciate. [[ Conclusion ]] We will definitely be back and hopefully more people come to this establishment as it's always nice to have a BBQ spot here in Fremont.

The prices are very reasonable for the meats, and they have a variety of limitless sauces you can grab. The only negative is that the sides can be better, but that's fine - totally into going pure meat for them! We typically get the 3 meat plates because it's a great value and can feed two. I sometimes can even share one with my parents. All their meats taste equally good. Our favorites are the beef brisket and pork ribs, but their pulled pork and smoked chicken are very moist, tender, and flavorful as well. We sometimes get a hot link on the side, as it's smooth with a good snap and spice. You can request it to be sliced. The grilled chicken breasts are not as tender as the other meats, but still has a good barbecue flavor - I imagine you'd get this if you need to eat lean. For sides, the mac & cheese, baked beans, and corn muffin are our favorites. The mac has a chunky and thick Velveeta-like coating, the beans have a strongly sweet and smoky robust flavor, and the corn muffin has a soft texture. The slaws are more vinegary, and the other sides are something you'd expect from your local grocer's prepared food section. Another thing that Capelo's Barbecue does well are the sauces - they have four types that escalate in heat. They all have very different flavor profiles and are on the sweet and tangy side, but I like them all. Their spiciest sauce is not that bad and does have some natural sweetness, but you should have water ready anyways because it's the spice that slowly grows on your tongue. The employees are extremely nice and efficient, both from the food truck and brick and mortar in Redwood City. One day when we came in for a pickup order, they were celebrating an employee's birthday and offered everyone a slice of cake! I wouldn't be surprised if I went to the South and had better BBQ, but we're in Northern California so I'll note Capelo's as amongst the best I've had in the bay (I've tried a lot of them). It seems they sporadically have live music at their dine-in location (which closes late for a barbecue place), so I hope to join them sometime in the summer for that! Their schedule is posted on their website, and they also have both indoor and outdoor seating, and a beer garden. Parking is not that bad, since they're away from downtown and have their own small lot. Their food truck roams around the entire bay, but I especially love partaking when they go to my local Off the Grid.
