McDuff's is the quintessential breakfast diner in town: small, local, quaint and unpretentious. It's only wall art are Redlands' pictures by a local artist. Its food is just as the pictures portray: simple, straight-forward, no fluff and real. The service was quick, pleasant and attentive. They are closed by 2:00 pm daily. This is a small place, so arriving at meal rush time you may have to wait. And the parking can be a bit tough at peak times. This morning was a treat of a "real" breakfast before starting the day of manual labor. Both set of eggs were cooked as we ordered them. But the country potatoes were the star. I ordered my extra crispy (I think our ticket called them "well done") and they came out perfect. They had the right amount of salt, tons of potato skin flavor, not too oily, and lots of crunchies (it's a word in my dictionary). The ham had a nice smoke under current in its flavor profile. The coffee wasn't the typical diner swill. It was smooth and, yet, still robust. The toast was better than restaurant chain toast: it carried the butter and jelly. Great food, served fast, friendly, impeccable service!! Dani has been working here since we started coming here in the late 90's. Super friendly, fast, and just an amazing human. Dani's daughter is equally amazing and backs her friendly mannerisms up with aplomb. Finally, the newest team member is a young lady named Katherine (sp?). Super fast, helpful, friendly. I complimented her on her work ethic and the smile it elicited was priceless. Her parents should be very proud. McDuff's in Redlands - 233 East State Street, Redlands, California I visited McDuff's in Redlands yesterday with my grandson for lunch. He requested a plain pancake rather than the Mickey pancake. I simply asked if the fruit that normally decorates the Mickey pancake could be placed on the side. That was the entirety of my request. As a regular customer who has frequented this establishment many times, I was deeply disappointed by what transpired. The blonde female employee who took my order--later revealed to be the manager--approached the counter to hand the ticket to the cook. At that point, I clearly overheard her remark: "She's so picky. She should have just ordered a regular pancake." In fact, that is exactly what I had ordered. Such a dismissive and unprofessional comment, made audibly within earshot of a customer, is wholly inappropriate in any service setting. Having worked in the legal field, I can state unequivocally that professionalism requires restraint and courtesy, not disparagement of the very patrons who support the business. As a Hispanic woman dining in a restaurant that was overwhelmingly white at the time, the comment carried an undertone that felt discriminatory, especially when contrasted with the markedly positive demeanor she displayed toward other tables. What made matters worse is that I then heard this manager speaking about us to other tables. Her words and tone were condescending, and frankly, it came across as labeling us "ghetto." This type of behavior is not only unprofessional, it is degrading and deeply offensive. When I requested to speak to the manager, I was surprised to discover that the individual who made the comment was in fact the manager herself. I then asked for the owner's contact information but was told by this manager that she could not provide it. I later took it upon myself to track down the owner, Larry McDowell, and spoke with him directly. Unfortunately, rather than taking my concern seriously, Mr. McDowell dismissed it outright. He told me he had never received a complaint about this employee, praised her character, and recited his own contributions to the restaurant--despite no longer working there. Instead of being heard, I felt ridiculed and brushed aside, which only deepened my disappointment. To further highlight the issue, several neighbors have since confirmed to me that complaints about this establishment are, in fact, not uncommon--one even mentioned a mother and daughter walking out recently due to similar poor treatment. The food itself is mediocre at best and offers nothing distinctive. In today's competitive market, establishments should be striving to earn and retain customer loyalty through excellent service. Instead, McDuff's appears content with complacency and, worse, tolerates management that openly disrespects its patrons. As consumers, it is important that we utilize reviews to hold businesses accountable. Supporting establishments that fail to respect their clientele only perpetuates poor practices. Restaurants of this nature are, frankly, a dime a dozen. My recommendation is to spend your money where professionalism and customer service are valued. McDuff's is not that place. Went in around 845 Sun morning. No line outside but inside was full. We asked the waitress how long would the wait be for 8. 5 adults 3 children. Before I could even finish my sentence, I was rudely cut off by an old blonde lady telling me no. She did not offer two tables so I could sit at one table and the other 4 at another table. She was short and told us we can't eat there. No wait time. No trying to make something happen. Just no, we can't help u in the rudest way possible. I've been going there for years and for those years, have been bringing many people to Mcduffs because the food is good BUT no food on this earth, is good enough to get treated like crap. I was in the neighborhood while waiting for an errand. At first, I had no interest in going in, but then I saw they had a breakfast burrito on their menu. The interior is cramped and I guess they don't do much takeout because the waitress was initially hesitant to do so until she checked with someone else. I wasn't expecting much, however this burrito was amazing. I've had ALOT of breakfast burritos in my time, and this is definitely in the top 3!! Friday, July 8,2022 What a nice little spot in downtown Redlands. I believe the parking was perfect for us because of the time. A nice clean, small dinner/cafe friendly atmosphere. Very busy but only a five minute wait time for us. This does not seem to be a restaurant where folks linger. This was a plus for me and my mom. Due to our concern with social distancing. Arriving at a time close to 1:15 ish was good timing, because folks appeared to be thining out. The restaurant closes at 2pm. We were greeted by a nice friendly waitress by the name of Danny. After viewing the menu, mom ordered the Steak & Eggs with sourdough toast and decaf coffee. I had the Sausage Scramble with one pancake and a side order of French toast. As usual, I always have questions about something on the menu. I had short conversations with Danny about the soups they serve and the fact they make homemade salsa. I was also interested in the history of McDuff's. Danny was happy to share and even told us , she has been there for the past 22 years. Our food was Excellent, just like our service! The New York steak was tender and seasoned perfectly. My Sausage scramble and oat bran pancake was delish. I really enjoyed the French toast and the salsa was very tasty. Nice home style potatoes. Honestly, the WORST service I've ever had here or anywhere else in that manner. I walked in to access the seating situation because I know how busy Sunday mornings can be. I was approached by a very rude waitress that I've never seen before that asked me how many were in my party. I responded, I'm not sure yet, as I was on the phone texting. She had the audacity to ask me again within 30 seconds of how many were in my party and also had the nerve to mention she didn't have time to wait around... I then asked for a manager. In addition, she decided to tell me that I had listening problems/issues. At this point, I feel like I was highly discriminated against. Some entry level hostess teamed up with with her and said that I don't come there everyday, so I didn't have any say... I actually do visit this location weekly. I enjoy the mom and daughter that work very hard and show a sense of community everyday. Went to McDuff's today after Carolyn's Cafe had a one to two hour wait. The restaurant was packed with several people waiting outside but the wait was less than twenty minutes. Which we thought was great. We have been to McDuff's many times in the past for breakfast or lunch and the food or service has never been an issue with us. But today after this meal was delivered I could not help to ask the waitress, " This is the Belgian waffle?" The waitress replied " the waffle press says Belgian on it". To me this looked like a frozen waffle that was put in a toaster to cook. The best part of this meal was the bacon and eggs but the waffle was horrible, very dense and dry. Very difficult to eat. Had a pretty bad experience here one time, although the other times I'd been here were okay. Long story short I came in with my 2 year old who out of nowhere threw up a few moments after sitting down. If you have kids you know how sometimes you can't predict these things. Anyway, the waitress before we even sat down seemed super annoyed I came in with a child. After the incident where my kid had thrown up I asked if I could get something to wipe down the area. Waitress was visibly upset about what had just happened, made a few negative remarks, and began freaking out at the fact a kid had thrown up on the floor. What's strange to me is there was only one other person eating there before I came in. It was pretty early in the morning so the place was dead. What struck me though was how little help I got and on top of that was made to feel bad for what had happened. I'm a new parent, so I didn't expect or prepare for something like this so naturally I was in a bit of shock with how I was treated. After I tried cleaning up as best I could I left and heard the waitress under her breathe make another snarky remark which felt really bad to hear. Safe to say, ain't going back. While this was the only negative experience I've had here, I can't say I'll ever return given how my daughter and I were treated. My son is a normal healthy happy child, So of course, he can be loud at timeshe got up and fell and cried, like any other child would. It felt like everybody there has never seen a small child cry before. It was all older and mid age people. So if you have little ones, don't go. Save yourself a trip of people looking at you like. I asked for assistance and the wait staff said- you were literally out there for five minutes. Is this the standard of customer service? Never again. Do not go. You will be disappointed. The ambiance was awful too. The manager backed up the rude employee. The waitress really should not be in customer service. It was not a psychologically, safe environment for a grandmother to take her grandchildren and being spoken to that way is very rude anywhere. I really wanted to give it 4.5 but you can't lol. The food is AMAZING. Best French toast and omelet! We got the kids the waffle meal and split it so they brought it out split which was awesome as a parent I don't have to ask for an extra plate. The reason I don't give it 5 stars is its really tight seating inside. That's a problem when trying to enjoy your good. Everyone was offered bumping into each other, hard to get out your seat etc. I hope they fix that! read more
