Man... disappointed honestly. First, I need to mention we have been here before and enjoyed it for the quality of food, quantity and pricing. But we went yesterday & man did it really let us down & we probably will not be returning. First, the restaurant was super dark & dingy, & after looking at the ceiling, I realized it was a popcorn crawling with black dust and dirt all over it, especially in the corners and near vents. Then, there was a woman sitting down with her dog in the restaurant, while this wouldn't be a big deal for most, I think it speaks to the hygiene level & care for the restaurant, ESPECIALLY when the floor isn't hard wood or tile or anything, it's carpet. Next, we ordered two BELGIAN waffles & got two small, thin, square pancakes. Just look at the photo. Like what? I paid nearly $15 for that? No, just no. Their website says they've been open since 2010 but that's hard to believe. McDuff's feels like it's been open for much longer than that. It has that old school diner feel, very homey, very friendly, where the staff knows your name because you've been going there for over 30 years. It's small and cozy but we've never had to wait for a long time to be seated. We've been there for breakfast 4X and have ordered something different every time. Everything is good. Portions are good. Came here recently with friends as we were celebrating a birthday for one. This place is usually super packed but my gosh, they deserve all the business. I got a good cup of joe and a full waffle breakfast. All of which was delicious. Only downside was my sausage patty that came with my waffles which tasted kind of off?? But otherwise, the rest of my food was delish! We were awkwardly squished into the front and split up between 2 tables but no complaints here as the service and food made up so well for it. My husband and I recently had breakfast for the first time at McDuff's a few weeks ago and had a great experience. The food was good and the service was fantastic. We were originally going to take our meal to go, but after receiving it, the staff was extremely kind to let us eat our food on site, tending to us as if we were regular dine in customers. We came in on a weekday for breakfast and they were busy. This is definitely a popular spot in town. Our order consisted of the short stack of pancakes and the breakfast burrito with chorizo. The portions were generous, despite us technically placing our order to go. The short stack had large, tasty pancakes and the breakfast burrito was big and bursting with all of the included fixings with tons of chorizo. We left with smiles and full stomachs. Mcduffs was great! It is very small inside with not a ton of seating but it is clean and well taken care of. We were walking around downtown Redlands looking for a place that had breakfast or sandwiches and we found one with both in Mcduffs. We shared the cinnamon roll which was great! It was hot and soft with just the right amount of frosting on it. I had the breakfast burrito with avocado as my protein and wow was it great! The eggs and potato's were cooked perfectly did not dominate the burrito. It was well balanced between all the flavors and it came with a free side of sour cream which I loved. My gf had the cold vegetarian sandwich which was excellent as well. It has three cheeses on it (American, Jack, and cream cheese) which we loved and was also a very good sandwich that had mushrooms, sprouts, and avocado on it. The service was great as it is just two waitresses serving, cleaning, and seating the whole restaurant. You could tell that they cared about the restaurant and your experience and meal. I imagine that they normally have an extra worker helping during weekends but for a busy weekday our two waitresses did fantastic. Also everything was so fast. From the time we sat down to paying the check it was 30 minutes. Overall I would definitely recommend Mcduffs to anyone in Redlands not looking to wait a long time for a great meal. McDuffs is a cute, cozy, home style restaurant in downtown Redlands. Compared to come of the most popular breakfast spots, I consider McDuffs the hidden gem. It feels like an old diner/ coffee shop vibes with friendly staff and great food. The breakfast is a traditional American breakfast with all the things you need and very reasonable pricing! My favorite is the scramble (pictured), with egg whites! The only downside I will say is the lack of coffee drinks, besides hot coffee and an iced coffee (which is really the hot coffee with some ice). My husband had heard about this place from a friend, so when we worked a job out here and finished early he knew we had to eat here. When you walk in you seat yourself. It's a smaller place, maybe 10-12 tables tightly packed in. We sat at a table behind another table and had to scoot our table a bit to fit within that area. We were able to order quick my husband got the steak and eggs (great price btw!), a half order of biscuits and gravy, and I got the chicken ranchero sandwich. We also order some squaw bread cause we were curious lol! All the food was HOT which I love! The sandwich was open faced and loaded with hot veggies and tons of avocado! The fries were crispy and the salad on the side was so crisp and fresh! My husbands steak was cooked perfectly, it had a bit more fat and cartilage than you would like, but still very juicy and tender. His potatoes were surprisingly flavorful. That being said we did feel like everything needed more salt. That's literally the only reason for 4 stars vs 5, just more salt. The biscuits and gravy were solid. The gravy tastes homemade and has a chipotle flavor we really liked. I'd say the biscuit was the least favorite, it was a little bland and too soft. I like a crispy biscuit top! And last. That squaw bread. It's like the most flavorful wheat bread you've ever had. Slathered in melted butter and served with jam. I love bread, and I am IN love with this bread haha! I love cozy diners, and you still make Redlands a worthy place to stop for breakfast. We shall happily visit you again. This particular weekday morning, I started with a delicious scramble filled with mushroom, delicious sausage chunks, onion, red bell pepper, and cheese. Nicely done and very generous. The freshly made, country potatoes were perfect, too. My choice for toast was the sweet, dark squaw bread, two slices that had been buttered with REAL butter, applied while still hot. That tickles me immensely and makes me feel spoiled (in a good way, of course). The Biscuits with Gravy was Mr. B's choice. He has been going on a mini-B&G binge lately, some better than others, but this one was a real winner. Add a side sausage patty, a generous round of well seasoned pork, and he was very satisfied. Someone came by often enough to keep the coffee cups full. Later, we talked about the experience. We both agreed that it was good, but nothing special. It was delicious!! We started with the cinnamon roll topped with melted butter. It was warm and soft that top off the taste of the delicious coffee. I had the omelette with bacon and ham, potatoes and toast. So delicious and not greasy at all. My friend had the two egg breakfast with ham. Ham slice was juicy...not dry looking at all. She ate her whole plate and loved it. I enjoyed how quaint the restaurant looked and very clean. Our waitress (wish I asked her name) was wonderful even when I asked for more creamer. Oh man, where do I begin? My family and I were really looking forward to trying this place, but we encountered racism, passive-aggressiveness, and unfriendly looks. We didn't even get to order our food. To start, we ordered drinks and made sure to keep things simple. It bothered the staff that we were trying to make their job easier by moving the seasonings. A girl came up to our table and said, "Oh no, give me that. Don't put it on the empty table, just give it to me instead," with a disrespectful attitude. Immediately, we felt unwelcome and uncomfortable. We thought maybe they were just having a bad day. Then we started to overhear their attitudes towards other customers. They were being disrespectful and rudely correcting someone for mistakenly ordering potatoes instead of French fries. At that moment, we decided it was best to pay for our drinks and leave. We hadn't even ordered food yet, and we were already having a negative experience. I can't even imagine how it would have gone if we had ordered more or asked questions, since it was our first time there. It would also be our last. To top it off, when we said we would just pay for our drinks and leave, the girl grabbed our menus and turned around rudely, saying, "Cash or card? You can pay at the register." As I approached the register, she stated, "$10.50." I replied, "We just ordered two drinks; can we please see the receipt?" She then explained that each drink was $4.50, so adding them together plus tax brought the total to just over $9. McDuff's in Redlands - 233 East State Street, Redlands, California I visited McDuff's in Redlands yesterday with my grandson for lunch. He requested a plain pancake rather than the Mickey pancake. I simply asked if the fruit that normally decorates the Mickey pancake could be placed on the side. That was the entirety of my request. As a regular customer who has frequented this establishment many times, I was deeply disappointed by what transpired. The blonde female employee who took my order--later revealed to be the manager--approached the counter to hand the ticket to the cook. At that point, I clearly overheard her remark: "She's so picky. She should have just ordered a regular pancake." In fact, that is exactly what I had ordered. Such a dismissive and unprofessional comment, made audibly within earshot of a customer, is wholly inappropriate in any service setting. Having worked in the legal field, I can state unequivocally that professionalism requires restraint and courtesy, not disparagement of the very patrons who support the business. As a Hispanic woman dining in a restaurant that was overwhelmingly white at the time, the comment carried an undertone that felt discriminatory, especially when contrasted with the markedly positive demeanor she displayed toward other tables. What made matters worse is that I then heard this manager speaking about us to other tables. Her words and tone were condescending, and frankly, it came across as labeling us "ghetto." This type of behavior is not only unprofessional, it is degrading and deeply offensive. When I requested to speak to the manager, I was surprised to discover that the individual who made the comment was in fact the manager herself. I then asked for the owner's contact information but was told by this manager that she could not provide it. I later took it upon myself to track down the owner, Larry McDowell, and spoke with him directly. Unfortunately, rather than taking my concern seriously, Mr. McDowell dismissed it outright. He told me he had never received a complaint about this employee, praised her character, and recited his own contributions to the restaurant--despite no longer working there. Instead of being heard, I felt ridiculed and brushed aside, which only deepened my disappointment. To further highlight the issue, several neighbors have since confirmed to me that complaints about this establishment are, in fact, not uncommon--one even mentioned a mother and daughter walking out recently due to similar poor treatment. The food itself is mediocre at best and offers nothing distinctive. In today's competitive market, establishments should be striving to earn and retain customer loyalty through excellent service. Instead, McDuff's appears content with complacency and, worse, tolerates management that openly disrespects its patrons. As consumers, it is important that we utilize reviews to hold businesses accountable. Supporting establishments that fail to respect their clientele only perpetuates poor practices. Restaurants of this nature are, frankly, a dime a dozen. My recommendation is to spend your money where professionalism and customer service are valued. McDuff's is not that place.
