I've really come to love Matchbox. I've had happy hour, lunch and dinner a few times and it was a win each time. I decided to round out my experience with brunch. While I usually visit the Chinatown location, I wanted to experience brunch at the Capitol Hill location. With a reservation, I wasn't disappointed. Delicious as expected. I got the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were flavorful, not overpowering with seafood seasoning, but not bland-- just right. There were bits of chopped andouille sausage topping the dish, adding some flavor. The grits had great taste and consistency. My dad got the crab cake benedict (no english muffin). The crab cake was wrapped in bacon and served with their brunch potatoes. So good! They had flavorful mimosa options that I loved ($8-10, no bottomless option ladies). Because I love onion rings and I enjoyed an order I had before, I had to have a side of them. These were not the same onion rings I got from the Chinatown location. These were more tempura like, but the fried batter was lighter, more fluffy. I didn't enjoy them. Parking is rather iffy, so have walking shoes if you have to park a few blocks away. Otherwise, Eastern Market metro is the closest stop (still have your walking shoes), Uber or the Circulator will get you here. Overall, it was great eats in the city. I've been here before but this was my first time here for happy hour. The only complaint I have is that their happy hour drink selection is very slim so there aren't very many options. We started with the calamari which didn't really taste like much but the breading was light so it was perfect but I didn't really care to much for the jam that was served it. The jam woulda been better suited for bread. The pizza was pretty good but I crust was a little crispier than I needed it to be. It was left in a little longer than I wanted it to be I think was the problem but I think it's just because they cook it with an open flame so the crust cooks the quickest. I'm not sure if I would come back for happy hour but the bartender with the long hair was really nice. I enjoy their pizza always so I will definitely be back some other time. read more

It's very easy to overlook this gem in Capitol Hill. I pass this spot every Wednesday, but always dismissed it. Well, my cousin and I decided to go here on Valentine's Day. What a spot!!! The atmosphere is amazing. Our server, WILLIAM is hands down in the top 5 of the best servers I have ever had in life. No exaggeration. He was polite, funny, attentive and truthful. He made some awesome recommendations, was never obtrusive or too familiar. He struck the right balance. We were in the restaurant for probably five hours. No lie. The crab soup was so damned good that I ended up ordering it as an appetizer and as a entree. I cannot wait to return. The pizzas look so good, so I will be trying one when I go back. Today was the official opening of Matchbox on Capitol Hill! I didn't think I was going to get to come today, but I was cut last minute from work! I arrived around 2030 and found that in true Matchbox style, it was packed. I immediately advanced to the host stand to put my name down. I was given a plastic Bingo ball that said B12. Cute. They call your bingo number and your name when your table is ready. Mary arrived shortly after and we stood in the front near the host stand and door to make sure we wouldn't miss being called to be seated. Being the Asian Tourist I am known to be, I had my camera in hand and was attempting photos but it was kind of hard with the very low light and lots of people walking around. As I was taking a photo, a rather tall gentleman approached me with his own Nikon SLR in hand. He turned out to be Perry, the owner and was curious about my taking photos; perhaps I was from a magazine? Sadly not. But it was cool talking to him; we exchanged cards and I told him about my budding photography career and also mentioned Yelp. I told him I had actually just planned a brunch for the other location but since this one is now open, we are shifting it to here. He explained that they actually won't be taking reservations for brunch but if our larger party arrives early, we should be fine. (YAY!) He welcomed me to walk around the place while I waited and take whatever photos I desired. (DOUBLE YAY!!) When I walked around, another one of the managers/owners(?) approached me about my photo taking and thought I was from a magazine (if only!) and wanted to chat with him. So that's my intro, here's my breakdown::: HOSTESS/RECEPTION: Seemed to have a good handle on the large crowd and got people seated as quickly as could be expected on opening night. We waited a little over an hour for our table which was basically what they projected. As I mentioned before, the Bingo balls are a cute concept, but Perry said he wasn't sure how long that would last. Apparently during the "friends/family" event, they found balls bouncing on the floor everywhere. One of the hostesses asked me about my photography and I gave her my card! (Yay for potential clients) BAR: Beautiful wood bar, fully stocked with everything a bar should have. Lots of TV's, ample seating, attentive bartenders. Impressive, really. We got martinis while we waited but they didn't seem to fill the glass very much. The Berry Blast at the Chinatown location was purple, if I recall correctly. This one was pink. Still absolutely delicious and could probably drink at least 5 of them if I wasn't becoming so poor. LAYOUT/DECOR: It seems to be a bit more spacious than the Chinatown location. You just don't feel quite as cramped or tight. There's an upstairs (which is where we were seated) and the main dining room area as well as a few booths just below the balcony. It's very cozy and the lights are low. Thus, making it hard for really good photos, but it's a wonderful ambiance. FOOD/SERVICE: Our server was a girl named Liz and she was great. I got another martini and Mary got wine. Mary got the crabcake sandwich whereas I got the mini-burgers. I got pizza last time I was at a Matchbox so it seemed only fitting that I get sliders this time; no pickles, add gorgonzola. Ahh everything was great. They did however, forget to add my gorgonzola, but that is totally forgivable. We flagged Liz down and she was off to get it. The burgers were cooked to a perfect medium and tasted fresh and juicy. I ordered 6 and only ate 3. The other 3 are currently in a box in my fridge and will make a great snack tomorrow. Too full for dessert - but it was tempting. BATHROOM: Surprisingly small. I dunno, I guess I was expecting something a lot bigger than two stalls and one sink. Nothing fancy about it; it's a bathroom. It smelled nice though and it did have one of those crazy fast air dryers for your hands. I can appreciate this, being a hostess at a restaurant where I have to go into each individual bathroom and empty the garbage cans filled with paper towels. This does simplify it a bit. CROWD: Maybe I notice it because I'm short, but the crowd this evening seemed to be on the really tall side. I felt like I was straining my neck sometimes looking up to talk to people. But overall, it seemed like a Capitol Hill crowd (shocking, I know); lots of young professionals, well-dressed and ready to wind down from a long week of work. CONCLUSION: Overall, for having just opened, Matchbox really has their stuff together. Service was fantastic and the food came out in a timely manner. It's a known fact that when most restaurants first open, service can be spotty, food will get messed up or come out slow, etc... but they had none of these problems. My visit was horrible. We had to wait a little over 20 minutes before being greeted by a server. We eventually had to walk over to the hostess in order for a server to come over to our table. The wait for our drink took tremendously long. I ordered the cream of crab soup which I wanted to like but didn't. My boyfriend ordered the jumbo lump crab cakes in which he stated were not good. The pizza was pretty average for your typical pepperoni pizza. Before leaving, we asked for a glass of water which took over 10 minutes to be served to us. Two Words: Bloody Beer I took one for the team today with the Brunch Bunch and I had the Bloody Beer, which is a PBR tall boy and bloody Mary mix. Yes ladies and gentlemen and very classy drink. I am almost embarrassed to say how delightful it was. So GOOD! It is also the cheapest "Mary" drink on the menu at 5 dollars, so drink up. I had the prosciutto and Gruyere waffle sandwich. YUM-O as the annoying Rachel Ray would say. It was beautifully plated and had a couple rasbperries and some melon on the side. Shawn G was also a smarty and ordered this delicious dish. My experience at Matchbox is one that exceeded my expectations. I am not the one who dines at Italian/American restaurants, and especially not ones that cost more than $15 per person per meal. These kinds of restaurants, in my experience, have little to offer for vegans, and just cost way too much. But somehow, Matchbox outdid themselves and didn't get caught into the unfortunate "I will never eat there again!" folder. I would've never decided to eat here, but one of my co-workers is moving back to Australia after temporarily working in DC for 2 months. This was going to be our last dinner together, and a last "hoorah!" before she leaves for her home island half way across the globe. Another person in our group suggested this restaurant, and I, not wanting to let the group down because of my dietary needs, figured I could talk to the waiter about customizing my meal and agreed on dining here. We made a reservation for 4, but ended up bringing along another person. "No problem!," they said, and seated us at a table for 6. We were a pretty diverse group as well, 2 from Australia, 2 from California, and 1 from Connecticut. Our waiter, Everitt, was prompt the entire night, paying close attention to our orders and needs. He got us water, he recommended beer, (I ended up getting the "Flying Dog" Lager, which was full of flavor, and delicious!), and answered all my questions. Their wine list is extensive, and they have a nice selection of local beers, as well as your usual favorites. They even break down cocktails between "girly" and "manly" which opens up the debate to the gender roles that drinks play into...BUT we understand where they're coming from and I'm gonna let them go on that one. (I love 'girly' drinks, don't judge me!) The menu itself is not vegan friendly at all. Only 1 appetizer was vegetarian, and there was a vegetarian sandwich, and a few vegetarian pizzas. However, everything had some form of milk or cheese in it. After long deliberation, I got the small pizza, with tomato sauce, roasted garlic sauce, and wild mushrooms (no cheese). Everitt made sure that he got my order correct, and that no mistakes would be made. Our meal came out and it looked amazing. Even my friend's burger with onion rings, and my other friend's proschiutto pizza looked really good! The verdict? Their woodstove ovens always give their pizzas a nice crunch and slight burnt crusts which I enjoy. The garlic sauce mixed with the tomato sauce was absolutely delicious, and you wouldn't even miss the cheese. Mushrooms were piled and were present in every bite I took. I wish the crust was a tad bit thicker, as it was almost as thin as paper, but that's a personal preference. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and everyone devoured their pizza. I usually have to take my food home, but this pizza was so good, that even finished off the entire thing! Of course, Everitt came around to make sure everything was going great, and our plates were picked up promptly. And of course a little dessert menu was conveniently placed at the corner of our table when we finished our meals. I usually never have dessert, but we were celebrating! So I ordered the strawberry sorbet, my Australian friend ordered the molten chocolate cake, and another friend ordered the chocolate chip bread pudding. Everything looked soo good. My sorbet was soft and creamy, and tasted like real strawberries! The molten chocolate cake was thick and oozed chocolate in every bit. The bread pudding was a generous serving, which was filling, sweet, and a bit savory. Even when the bill came, we paid with 5 different credit cards, and not a single mistake was made. My entire experience here was great from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. I felt welcomed, and I ordered great food that worked with my dietary needs. I woke up this morning thinking about something I ate last night. At Matchbox. This is what life is about! Shame on me for just now giving this place a go. I mean, I have eaten almost *everywhere else on this strip--from hot spots Belga and Cava (repeatedly)-- to newcomers Senarts Oyster & Chop House and Chesapeake Room--to more under-the-radar spots, like Las Placitas, which is Matchbox's neighbor... But I've been been deterred by Matchbox as I was under the impression they only/mainly served pizza! What a mistake! Love the venue. Warm, relaxed, kid-friendly but still refined enough. The menu was certainly not only pizza and the other offerings were creative and appealing. There were several specials of the day that also sounded lovely. One of those I started with: THEE lobster and avocado sliders. OMG. Lightly toasted and buttered buns with huge pieces of claw meat and fresh avocado and not much else (I think there was a very light/unimposing sauce but it was perfect). These are what are still on my mind today. They were awesome and I was tempted to order another plate of this. My entree was similarly stand-out. Pan seared salmon that has was a bit crispy on top, topped with a citrus-herb butter and served atop a bed of creamy cheese grits and perfectly sauteed spinach. The dish was phenomenal. It played perfectly. Service was attentive and my little girls were given pizza dough to occupy them. This entertained them for the entire visit. Well, until the 2-year-old decided to hurl hers from the second-level of the restaurant where we were seated. Yeah. Don't wanna go there right now... The restaurant had a diverse crowd: peeps at the bar, peeps on dates, peeps out for a romantic dinner and then peeps out with children. But they had a little system going where all of the tables with kids were pretty much contained to the second floor, so all were happy! Yes, the miniburgers are real good but don't freak out over them or anything. They're obviously Matchbox's proudest accomplishment with their "3.6.9" plastered everywhere, but the pizza is what's really worth bragging rights. My faves are the flat-iron steak, proscuitto white and the fire & smoke. This location is great because it's not as much of a madhouse as Chinatown - you can actually get a table. Now that I've been to both the Capital Hill and Chinatown Matchbox I can tell you honestly that the Capital Hill location is far better. Not only do I like the location more (not really as busy and much more aesthetically appealing), but the service is 10 times better. Yes this could be a bias based off singular experiences, but the shabby service my sister and I received from the Chinatown location compared to the stellar service my friend and I received at Capital Hill is note worthy. Chad, sir, you took wonderful care of Carla and I. Thank you. I hope your manager reads this and rewards you! On this recent trip I decided to finally try the famous slides. Holy moly! Why did I wait so long? Not only were they cooked to a perfect medium (a pretty difficult thing to achieve when cooking a slider), they were very flavorful and had a great burger-to-bun ratio. The only thing I would change would be the cheese. I asked for gouda, and did get what I asked for, but could only tell by looking at it. I didn't really taste it and neither did my friend. Perhaps use a different type of gouda? or maybe I'll just ask for something different next time. We also ordered the prosciutto and black mission fig pizza. I'm happy my friend wanted something other than a meat pizza. I get tired of most individual's lack of adventure with food. Her excitement was refreshing. Now we'll be about to hang out again. :) The pizza was great. There were just enough toppings on it, and just like the sliders, the ratio of crust to toppings was spot on. The roasted garlic spread that acted in place of the traditional tomato sauce was killer. I ordered to drink Matchbox's blood and sand. Yum. Oh yum. Today was my first time, and I'll definitely be back. I ordered the Caesar salad with fried chicken and it was heaven. I know it's know for pizza but they have so many other options, I had to try them. I have to go back because I need to try the shrimp w/ grits, cream of crab soup, steak frites, fried chicken sandwich, and of course, the pizza, which is an amazing size! A small can be shared by 2 ppl... Everything looked and smelled delicious! There is also a full bar, so it's an awesome place for drinks! The layout is open and spacious, with an upstairs as well, and they do private events! 4 stars because it wasn't too busy and service was slow! I was completely ignored for the better part of 15 minutes when I first went into the restaurant and there were probably only 10 other customers there at the time (it was fairly early into the weekday lunch hour). As I was in somewhat of a hurry, I finally flagged someone down to order my food. I ordered the ahi tuna salad, which was fresh and healthy and definitely a filling enough amount. It came with romaine, spring mix, red onions, carrots, red peppers, peanuts, wonton strips, soba noodles, daikon sprouts, sesame seeds, and a ginger-soy vinaigrette. I love love loved this salad and it's the only thing saving this review from 2 stars (since the service was so bad). I love Matchbox as a chain generally (the one in Chinatown is superb and consistently gets 5 stats from me), but the Capitol Hill location isn't the best. Came on a Sunday during brunch hours and was able to grab a seat outside with no wait. To sit inside there was a 1/2 hour. The server was so knowledgable and one of the best waiters I've had in a long time. He really represented the brand well and explained the menu you really well. I was able to try the burger and the pizza. The food took a little long to come out but it was worth the wait for the most part. I was very disappointed in my mushroom burger only having a sprinkle of mushrooms and had to send it back for more. The server said he was sorry and wasn't sure why it was lacking considering it normally has way more. The onion rings it came with BLEW ME AWAY. Thick, tasty and super yummy. We walked the street scoping out the plentiful brunch options and ended up choosing Matchbox. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait, so we made out way to the bar for drinks. Any place that has a specific menu for brunch drinks already wins my heart. I am not a Bloody Mary drinker, but I was impressed with their assortment of Bloody Mary choices. They had 5-6 different options- one with bacon, one with pickles, one with bleu cheese olives, and one with a sriracha rim. Spicy! They had 4-5 different mimosas as well. I ordered the Palm Springs mimosa which included grapefruit juice and pomegranate liquor. Was great! I wish there were some brunch drink specials though. Come on mimosa doubles! The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and trendy, but there's not a lot of space to wait with drinks unless you have a seat at the bar. Luckily, our table was ready earlier than expected. We were seated upstairs and received great service from Parker. I ordered the Bloody Mary burger with a black bean patty and ordered the cast iron cinnamon rolls for the table (just couldn't say no!). The black bean burger was handmade and delicious. The Bloody Mary mayonnaise was to die for and was perfect on the burger. It's served with a side of greens and was the perfect breakfast. The cinnamon rolls came with 5 rolls and were a nice treat for the table. They aren't crazy sweet and have a distinct cream cheese taste. Pretty good! 5 stars -- just to balance out the out of balance 2 star review that preceded this one. The new Capitol Hill Matchbox lives in a soaring space and the pizza remains the same top-notch wood-fired pies youve come to expect from the Chinatown original. Went here Saturday night, and despite the not surprising opening weekend crowds, we waited about half an hour (as promised when we arrived) for a booth to open up for our party of 6. Have to say it wasnt a bad thing to while away some time at the beautiful bar, they have an outstanding beer selection tho the wines by the glass seemed a bit pricey for a (fancy) pizza joint. 8th Street has been waiting for a place like this -- and Matchbox delivers -- the service was outstanding, the food was terrific -- we had the Fire & Smoke pizza which was a clever and tasty bit of, well, fire and smoke. Also ordered the sausage and onion pie, which was good, if not as inventive as some of the other items on the menu (but the blame resides with me on that one, I chickened out on some of the more adventurous offering (a mistake I wont make next time). MatchBox CH delivered exactly what we were hoping for: an unfussy, fun and moderately priced restaurant residing in a grown-up space to spend an evening with friends (the sort of place that for too long has meant heading to another part of town). I would really like to give Matchbox 4.5 stars....I previously rated Seventh Hill as my favorite take-out pizza in Eastern Market; however, it's really Matchbox...I just tend to be too lazy to walk the extra few blocks from my house. Sometimes the walk is just necessary though, and I also LOVE going to Matchbox as a sit-down restaurant. Matchbox is very well done, just like anything from its owners, who also own Ted's Bulletin and DC-3. The past few times we've just ordered pick-up, but it's well worth it. The fire and smoke pizza is spicy, but tolerable. The spice comes from a variety of sources (fire-roasted red peppers, spanish onions, and chipotle pepper). There is just the right ratio of sauce, cheese, toppings, and bread - nothing is overwhelming on its own. I've also had plain pizza because, let's face it, I'm kind of boring when it comes to pizza....and it was the best I've had on the eastern side of DC. Unfortunately, I like the pizza so much that I haven't tried any of the entrees at Matchbox, but I'm sure they're just as good as everything else because I've never had anything bad. Last weekend, we also got the simple salad (without the dried cherries). We got a pretty big portion for $10 and the salad was made from very fresh ingredients. We were also impressed that they packaged up 4 big containers of dressing for us given that we asked for ranch in addition to the house. The house dressing was great - light, but tasty. I also highly recommend the mozzi carrozzi appetizer - it's like a huge, gourmet mozzarella stick made with high-quality ingredients, including fresh basil! Matchbox would also make a great happy hour location because it has great drinks - they have a variety of red wines to eat with your Italian food, but they also have awesome cocktails! I don't remember exactly what I've had, but I've had a few different cocktails from their menu and have never been disappointed. The bar area is also a nice space for grabbing a drink with a friend or waiting for a table --one of the things I don't like is that they don't take reservations. The ambience at Matchbox completes the whole experience - the owners really know how to make the most of a space, ensuring that it open and roomy inside without being too loud, while also keeping the historic feel (brick walls, dark wood, etc). Outside, there is a nice seating area along Barracks Row that is perfect for a warm fall day. I would also highly recommend the other Matchbox locations (Chinatown and Rockville), which both live up to the brand! read more

09/25/11. Barracks Row Festival. I finally accepted I don't like street food I don't like being obligated to a whole styrofoam container of food I've never tasted before at $12.00 a pop. I like to go inside a restaurant, sit down, take my time looking at the menu, and look my server in the eye when I place my picky ass order. So that is what I did at BRF. Or at least I tried to. Folks at the bar were hunkered down watching the game, hoarding stools for folk who hadn't even arrived yet, and in general holding up my food/wine acquisition process. Try as I might, I couldn't get the "eyeglass wearing" BT's attention. (I later learned his name was Dylan. He open mouth sneezed twice by the way and the next day I felt fluish.) I was on the verge of walking out when af-am BT came to the rescue! Got me a wine list, took/fulfilled my order, started a tab for me all in record time. Ahhh. Sauvignon blanc! Nectar of this Goddess. Next mission, a seat at the bar. It didnt take too long. Although to this day, I wish I'd sat somewhere else. The stupid, divorced, underemployed, homeless musician guy seated beside me tried to ask me 1.5 million questions. Ugh. What a drag. Can't even enjoy my cream of crab soup in peace. But it was delicious. Warm & thick with a plentiful pile of crabmeat on top. Yum. I also eventually ordered the slider trio. Supposed to have been 2 scallop, 2 crabcake, & 2 burger. I wanted to swap out the burgers for 2 shrimp. But that was going to be a $4 up charge. The slider trio was already $15.99 so to me, $4 would have pushed the dish in the entree price range. So I went for the no-cost substitution: polenta. That tasty carb-loaded pouf was enough to put me straight to sleep! But I stayed awake just long enough for another glass of wine. I do love Matchbox. Well...today we were in The District and at dinner time decided we wanted some mini-sliders and pizza but dreaded the thought of going to the Chinatown location, especially when the Caps were in town. So...it was time to try the one near the Eastern Market Metro station. We got there around 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday night and much to our surprise---were seated immediately! Seating is tight but we figured that was to be expected---sitting so close that you could hear everything being said at the table next to you. Service was prompt. The waiter came with a few minutes to take our drink orders. I decided to try a "girlie martini"---the one with pomegranate in it while my husband went for non-alcoholic beer. The Pomegranate martini was quite good---tart but not so tart that my mouth puckered. I got my husband to take a sip and he liked it so much he ended up sharing it with me LOL. In fact, when we finished it, we ordered a second one to share. Oh...those mini-sliders! --- Medium rare and juicy with a pickle slice---delicious! And those onion strings---thin, crispy and flavorful. Onion strings and sliders---those two alone make a visit to Matchbox well worthwhile. We decided to try a pizza after hearing so much about them. After looking at the pizza selection, we got a small pizza with buffalo mozzarella and dried tomatoes. My husband was a good sport in agreeing to share this because he doesn't like dried tomatoes. He told me he was going to pick them off and give them to me LOL. However, it was a different story when the pizza came---he ended up liking the dried tomatoes. As for the rest of the pizza---the sauce was great---flavored just right. The cheese was good, too, even though the portion was skimpy. Good crust with good flavor and on the crisp side completed the tasty pie. Needless to say, we were quite full and had no room for dessert. All in all, we're glad we tried this location. It's less crowded than the Chinatown location and we found it to be less noisy. Next time we start dreaming of mini-sliders, this is where we'll be heading! read more

Visited matchbox on a Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. We were greeted and seated right away........ but it took about 10 mins to get a hold of a waiter and twenty minutes for someone to bring us water to drink. That was disappointing when the place wasn't even that busy. It was happy hour and they had a good selection of food and drinks. We decided on the wings, mini burgers, meatballs, and meat pizza. All the food was delicious, just was upset at the service in the beginning. read more

I can admit when I'm wrong. Well, maybe not wrong, but when something deserves a second (third) chance. I will happily eat my words, as long as they're as tasty as the meal I finally enjoyed at Matchbox. I finally made it back to Matchbox to give it another shot. I was hot and tired from walking all over DC, pizza sounded really good, and I'd had a couple of warm-up drinks to hold me over for a potential long wait. But this time, there was no need! We were seated promptly at a lovely table near the windows. We started with the apple-pear salad, which was light and refreshing - perfect after a hot day in the sun. We devoured the combination of greens, fruit, candied pecans, gorgonzola and honey-balsamic vinaigrette in a hurry while we waited for the star of the dinner show. The pizza didn't disappoint! We went with a half & half pizza. One half was the prosciutto and black mission fig, which also has roasted garlic and gorgonzola. We unintentionally continued with the honey theme, as this pie features a delicious black pepper honey that really ties the entire thing together nicely with a sweet and savory finish. The other half was simple pepperoni and sausage, but it's all about how the pepperoni is cooked. I'm fussy and like it slightly well done, with a little bit of crisp to it. I was delighted to find it cooked to (my fussy) perfection. Throw in the Allagash White that I paired with the meal, and it was a truly delicious way to wrap up the day's adventures. read more

Super satisfying and a great pick for almost everyone! Matchbox is a great choice for almost any occasion- quick lunch, lunch with co-workers, a date, family dinner with kids, meeting for dinner with a large group...anything! Their menu isn't cheap, but it isn't expensive and they offer many ordinary menu items at top-notch quality. Their pizza is very delicious, and probably my favorite in the neighborhood (...but &pizza is opening on 8th street soon!). They have delicious burgers, and I recommend the bloody mary burger. The space and setup is nice, and they have a bit more room than many of the small restaurants nearby...but they do utilize every inch and you may feel like you are dining with the strangers next to you. For those looking to have a drink they have a nice cocktail list and offer a good happy hour deal. Overall, Matchbox is a very solid restaurant and you will not be disappointed leaving! read more

I know, it's so passe to review Matchbox at this point, but I just have to say two things. I still love the pizza more than life itself (at times) - can't decide between the pepperoni (double pepp is standard) or the Matchbox Meat (meaty and a touch of spice). but the thing I really love - they are open later than every other restaurant on 8th Street, and never cranky about stopping in at 11:30 for dinner - and FULL menu! read more

A couple years later and I'm updating my review. This experience was a lot better. Our server was great. He never introduced himself but we didn't have to ask for anything. He even brought our kiddos some dough to play with to keep them busy. We ordered the Matchbox meat and the Sausage and onions. The kiddos got a cheese pizza. The kids pizza was big. They shared and we had a slice leftover. Six slices! The pizza was cooked great. The crust is really thin which I like. If this is your first time and you don't mind a little spice, try the Fire and smoke it's delish. We were a little bummed that they got rid of our favorite dessert...basically a cookie sandwich with ice cream. So good. The service was great and our food was hot and fast. This is one very busy place on a Friday night! Both seating and receiving our meal took a very long time. Even the bread we asked for took a long time. They must use pizza crust and cut it into strips. It was very good with the seasoned olive oil. I ordered the Cremini mushroom pizza with arugula. It was good but not spectacular. Cyndy's Bottom Line: Love the onion strings!!! I've been to this location twice before and it was great!!! The bloody Mary's were superb! Well crafted with great condiments and awesome service at the bar. We went back and it was kapakahi if you know what I mean. The Bloody Mary had a drooping dried out celery and a sad cucumber. The bloody mix was not mixed well. The positive was the service by Ashley and the onion strings! It is not on the menu so just order it. read more

Everything here was amazing. The food was awesome, we got a meat lovers pizza that was perfect portions. We ended the night off with a slice of chocolate cake that was ginormous and super rich. Our server Rachel was phenomenal and we even had a little in common. The only thing I didn't like about this was the host, he sat us down, and it seems as if he forgot to tell anyone else we were there so we waited for a few minutes before even getting drinks. The service and food quickly made up and I completely forgot about it. Overall, visit was worth the trip for some out of Towner's looking for a good spot on their first night in the city. read more

I called for a takeout order of the flat iron steak pizza and I was so disappointed to find out that they no longer have my pizza on my menu. OMG, its like I didn't know what else to choose on the menu. I ordered the soppresetta (sp?) and wild mushroom pizza. The pizza tasted a little too porky for me. Yes, I knew ahead of time that I was eating an italian pork product, but I didn't like it too much and the more I think about it, the more upset I am that they don't have my pizza anymore. Come on management! Please put my flat iron steak pizza back on the menu!!! PLEEEASSSEE!! I am begging you!!! On another note, the curbside service was awesome and the nice guy that brough out my pizza was very nice too...but Iam still boycotting Matchbox until I can get another flat iron steak pizza. Went to Matchbox last Sunday to check out the debut of their new brunch menu! As usual the food was absolutely delicious. Flavorful and just the right portion size. The Matchbox skillet is my fav. My party also had the chicken & waffles and the fried chicken & grits. Both were good! One thing I do miss is that brunch pizza from the old menu but everything else was up to par! read more
