I came to Matchbox for a pre-matinee brunch on a chilly Sunday. We had reservations at noon, but they were very unnecessary as we were some of the only people in the restaurant. However, there were many more patrons by the time we left (around 1:30pm) so if you're on a schedule, a reservation isn't a bad idea. We ordered cocktails that were fine, but nothing exceptional -- certainly not the best espresso martini I've ever had, but it was drinkable and not overly expensive. We got buttermilk biscuits for a starter that were really tasty, but heavy and they arrived at almost the same time as our main dishes. The entrees were a good size and came out hot, correct, and fast. I had the chicken and waffles which consisted of one full Belgian waffle and three medium sized chicken tenders. My friend got the seasonal waffles with fruit and she liked it well enough. Service was quick and friendly. I will say, during colder weather, it may help to ask for a booth/table away from the door. Every time it opened we were treated to gusts of cold wind. Otherwise the dining area was clean and bright and the booths were comfortable. This is a convenient location for theaters and museums -- close to the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, but not close enough to the hotels to get flooded. We went to this place on a whim, while looking for a quick dinner spot before heading to the Miracle Theater for a show. The vibe was good, people were at the bar for happy hour and for dinner. It was a good crowd, around 5:30pm on a Wednesday night and we were seated quickly, the servers were friendly, and we placed our order relatively quickly. Our table server Neve was great, attentive and helpful. The food: the food came out in about 20 minutes, which was great! The wings were served piping hot and flavorful, the pear salads were fresh and plentiful, the fish and chips were delicious, though the fries were served cold. All of us had the cole slaw and none of us liked it. It was a weird taste, not sweet, a little watery and just not good. The brussel sprouts had good flavor, but they were prepared by flash-frying and we weren't expecting the grease. They were very tasty, but any health benefit was lost in the preparation. The ribeye was MOST disappointing! It was $38 and can accurately be described as a steak'um! This was the thinnest steak I have ever had outside of a steak and cheese sandwich shop. Dropped in during brunch and sat at the bar. They offer bottomless brunch that includes a breakfast bar on the weekends that everyone enjoys. The music was really loud so it was hard for the bartender to hear me. He was kind but super busy, but made sure to check on me. Where I sat at the bar I was able to interact with a lot of the servers and a manager. They were all kind. I started with a matchbox mimosa and it was heavy on the sweet side. I opted out of the bottomless brunch and decided to get the tres leche pancakes with chicken sausage and crispy house potatoes. The pancakes were okay. The bananas were the best part. Mixing the syrup and the tres leches cream? So good. The chicken sausage and potatoes are a pretty large side portions. The sausage was good but I found that the potatoes weren't crispy and lacked flavor. I might give this location another shot. read more

The Matchbox at Eastern Market, DC (Capitol Hill) Recently, I was walking around DC with my mom when lunchtime hunger hit us. After reviewing a few nearby options, we landed on Matchbox, largely because my mom had a craving for chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, that dish didn't make it onto the newly released menu. So, she pivoted to the fried chicken meal, which came with green beans and mashed potatoes. I, on the other hand, couldn't decide. There were too many tempting options left me paralyzed. In a moment of indecision, I hastily ordered the mumbo wings, a cup of cream of crab soup, and a guava lemonade. The décor was warm, well-laid-out, and inviting, so I was surprised by how quiet it was during prime lunch hours. When the food arrived, I instantly felt plate envy. My mom's fried chicken looked golden, crisp, and plentiful, with sides that appeared equally appetizing. My mumbo wings, however, were smaller and less flavorful than I hoped. Fortunately, the cream of crab soup was excellent, rich, creamy, and satisfying, and the guava lemonade was refreshingly good. Went on a Saturday afternoon after running a half marathon IYKYK, we were starving. Had pizza and burgers, which were both amazing. Our server was fantastic. Loved the DJ. Lots of folks were there eating brunch and all of the food we saw looked delicious. I'd also like to note that the manager noticed I was half asleep at the table and brought me a hydration packet and a bottle of water. That was clutch, and reflective of their quality of service. Unfortunately this business hasn't been a good neighbor with respect to the snow. The rest of the block is largely cleared of snow, 10 days after the big January 2026 storm, but this place made a little path big enough for maybe a badger or two ermine walking side by side, but not for a wider stroller, and definitely not for the wheelchair my party was trying to take down the block to a neighboring business. I had to clear away blocks of snow and ice with my hands and multiple passersby stopped to try to help before we were able to muscle the wheelchair up and over the remaining snow to get down the block. Right after the snow or in the frigid temps, fine, but this was 10 days later, after multiple days above freezing and they certainly could have run a shovel down the front of their shop once or twice. Very disappointed in this business, and also in DC for failing to cite them--seems to me like it's probably an ADA violation, and even if not unlawful, it's just super rude. One star. read more

Surprised my friend for her birthday with MatchBox's unlimited brunch special. It was the perfect opportunity to sample some of everything off the menu! Their biscuits are always my go to and I was glad they were included in the brunch special as we ordered 3 batches between the two of us. Our favorites were the sweet chili salmon pizza for the novelty, shrimp and grits for its creaminess, and blueberry lemon pancakes for their sweetness. The caesar salad was nice and the side of catfish was the right portion size. All the food was worth the brunch price. And the service of the waitress was excellent. She was attentive to our needs and checked on our table frequently. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the lighting at our table was awful. From the minute we sat down EVERYTHING was great! We were a group of 6 and our waitstaff, Charles was outstanding at keeping our drinks filled and bellies full! We ordered Arancini- it comes with 3 balls which is fine to cut in half, 4- 10in pizzas (hot honey pepperoni, garlic chicken, shrimp Alfredo, margherita) garlic chicken was the table favorite (shocked us all with how good it was), catfish and grits which was plenty to share with the fish lovers at the table- you would need 2 if everyone in your party loves fish, and all 5 desserts! Me and my friends went to the location on Capital Hill and it did not miss. I actually went back a month later because them BLUEBERRY LEMON PANCAKES! whewwww! Love them. The food is so good! The Jerk Chicken Pizza was delicious too. The wings, steak and eggs, biscuits, the CATFISH ! Y'allll so so so good! If you can't tell by now I did the unlimited food option. The drinks are very good and strong as well. Matchbox hosted a big family lunch on a Tuesday. Approximately 30 people, and they were extremely accommodating. The service and food were excellent, and the menu was suitable for a variety of needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free). The peach cobbler waffles were OK. The pizza was delicious, nice and crispy crust with tons of pepperoni. But the star of the show with the shrimp and grits. Nice big pieces of tender shrimp, drenched in sauce with bits and pieces of sausage. I'm guessing they forgot to put this in because it took so long it was the last dish that was served to me, and by then I was already so full to eat the whole thing. I don't like to waste food. Overall, this was a pleasant visit. The food is good, as well as the portion size. The price point is fair for the variety of dishes available. You only have two hours to enjoy and so I recommend you ordered everything you want to order as soon as you arrive so perhaps your time will be less. read more

First time coming to match box. We walked in and were seated within the first 5 minutes. I loved the decor and feel of the place. We came for the milk and honey brunch. Everything was delicious. The cinnamon rolls were melt in your mouth. A perfect outside crust from the cast iron. And the cream cheese icing is made fresh. The pancakes were crispy and buttery some of the best pancakes I've ever had. My sandwich was delicious the chicken was a bit over fried but it was still amazing sandwich. I always love the food at Matchbox but the service at this particular location on the Sunday that I went around 11am wasn't the best. The waitress seemed to keep disappearing and even once we sat down, it took a while for her to come over and take our drink orders. Then the food came out before a Coke. When we were finally ready to leave, the loud brunch crowd was trickling in, along with the Dj that couldn't determine what noise level he wanted to play the music, we had to ask the hostess to even find our waitress. The cinnamon roll 3/5 the spinach artichoke 3.5/5 the shrimp and grits -2/5 shrimp smelt old fishy. Like yes it's seafood but should not smell like straight from ocean. The waffles 1/5. Honestly there are so many other places in the same price range with better quality food. Would not return due to service alone. But the food sealed the deal. And my guest didn't like their food too much either and asked for just carrots and celery and the waiter said alot of people are just asking for that today . That says a lot. Several things: Had a reservation for 12 ppl. By 12:05 nine of the 12 were here. Told if they weren't here by 12:15 reservation automatically canceled. We were seated when the 10th person arrived at 12:15. Shortly in our section a party of 4 were seated then a 5th person arrived almost 10 mins later. Next the bottoms up is a rip off. You get ONE drink for $25 then each drink after that is $1.00. Thats not bottomless. Then there's the half-portion or full portion. Half is just for the person that ordered it. Full is for the table. Someone at our tabke said just bring the food. Lastly the beer on tap was SOUR. The bartender OFFERED bottled beer in place of the sour beer. She did not inform us that the bottled beer was not a,part of the "bottoms up" . They charged full price for each beer. After protesting/discussing they removed 2 of 3 beers. This entire concept needs to be revised or discontinued. You can get 2 drinks for less than the bottoms up. The Espresso martini was HORRIBLE. This is THE ONLY RESTAURANT THAT CHARGES an additional $1 per drink on what is supposed to be "bottomless" basically this is a play on words.
