Second strikeout of Summer Restaurant Week '25 in the DMV. "Unfortunately, the Restaurant Week Menu is not available at this location. They haven't arrived from the printer, yet." Meanwhile, I only came to this location because of the menu I saw on RAMW.org. I was disappointed because my whole point of coming out was to sample different restaurants for a reasonable price. They had one waiter, one bar back, one bartender, and one manager for the entire restaurant. There was a large birthday party at another table. Service was super slow!! Meh Mondays. Big break between finishing our appetizers and ordering mains. Drinks melted before we could order the next round. They did apologize about the menu. And they did offer us a discount. Food was pretty good. Had the Garlic Chicken Pizza. My Mango Hennessy was good and strong. Husband said the Sinful lemonade was just ok. The 369 Mini Sliders were the highlight for him, and the Honey Butter Biscuits were anticlimactic. I did not like that we asked for the manager, and the waiter refused to get him. Let's start with reservations are recommended because this place is lit! And if you don't have reservations for Saturday or Sunday brunch seating may be bar or a 2 hour wait. There is a live DC and the music is fire! Now for the food and drinks. The food was amazing! And the drinks were delicious and strong. They say drink responsibly and they mean it. It experience is well worth it! We had the shrimp and grits, pancakes (buttermilk and blueberry lemon), ultimate sandwich and pepperoni pizza. Matchbox Capitol Hill might have been the worst brunch experience I've had! First, brunch was booked for a specific reservation time and the party arrived maybe 10min ahead of time. We didn't get seated until after the 4th complaint about 45min later (they only provide 2hrs of bottom brunch from the time of your reservation). The realization hit the waiters that they gave our table away two times which extended the wait even more. Second, once we got seated, we waited another 15min before I had to get up and get the manager due to us not being greeted, provided water, etc. The manager brought out "courtesy biscuits" then walked away. Didn't leave plates, silverware, or napkins! I had to walk to the bar & ask for plates and silverware. Third, the unlimited family-style brunch is not consistent. You order items from a menu and they bring it to you. With the mass amount of people dining for brunch, the items brought out individually came out every 20min or didn't arrive at all! Despite being annoyed, I tried to stay calm as I explained the incident from arrival to payment and offered solutions. The manager's response was nonchalant. Pros: -I was able to book a reservation on OpenTable (party of 2), -Because of that reservation, I was able to sit immediately upon my arrival, -The drinks were good (pictured - strawberry rose margarita), -Cj was the highlight of a server (who actually - wasn't our server at all - just a helpful bystander) and sadly... that's it. Cons: -The service sucked, -It was severely hot in the establishment (doors were eventually opened), -Our appetizer (calamari, also pictured), was brought to the table before our drinks (when the drinks were ordered first), -That same calamari.... lol, better has been eaten before. I have a bunch of food allergies which often makes eating out tough. Jonathan, the Sous Chef of this location, went out of his way to make an incredible, delicious, and unique salad, that met all my dietary restrictions - and utilized ingredients from dishes on their menu. I cannot express how grateful I am for Jonathan's attention to detail. My 12 yr old son had the half rack of ribs and he practically licked his plate clean. And what was even more delightful was that Jonathan came out to check if I enjoyed the salad (which I did, very much!) He then knelt down beside our table to explain their dessert options to my son. My son was in heaven with his warm brownie, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and caramel choice. Eating outside on a stunning DC evening was a bonus. Sad to have to write this review. I used to LOVE this restaurant, but just wrapped up my third consecutive horrible experience with the service and will never be back. The place was not busy at all yet it still took 25 minutes to just receive my drink order and 1 hour to receive our food. My 8 year old's pizza never even came out and had to be rush ordered. I got a salad from another location a couple years ago and randomly remembered it and REALLY wanted it... and it was just as yummy as I remembered! And this time we also got drinks, the table bread, and sliders and everything was delicious!!! That table bread smells like heaven... super fluffy and garlicky! We just missed happy hour (ends at 6)...but there was zero wait and it was pretty empty on a Tuesday night, so the service was amazing and quick. And I'm glad we still got drinks (not too expensive either even without happy hour)... the cute ass cosmo was DELICIOUS! Highly recommend if you like sweet/strong drinks, haha. If this is the one on 8th St, don't go there until they get sufficient staff. We went there for brunch on Saturday to celebrate a grandchild's recital. It took an hour to get the food and another hour to get the bill. With a 7 year old and 2 year old, it was a brutal wait. The table next to us was also frustrated and when we walked outside there was another customer who said the wait time was unbearable. Matchbox used to be a favorite of mine. Have dined at every Matchbox in the DMV and was taken aback at the horrendous service we received at this location yesterday. Food was just okay, but we waited forever for almost every item, from drinks, to refills, salads, and meals, and every person dining with us received the wrong meal and/or drink. However, the icing on the cake was our server, who got an attitude with us over our frustration of having to wait well over 15 minutes for him to bring the check and run our cards, and who then proceeded to argue with us over how he did not appreciate our frustration. Showed up here last night with about 13 friends wet from the thunderstorms. We were seated and accommodated as a big group with waters brought and orders taken right away. Food quality was great and their Matchbox beer was delicious. Since we were a big group and sat in the back we didn't realize we had stayed past closing (sorry!). We weren't given a hard time and our server made sure to split the checks to everyone's request. I'd recommend this specific Matchbox location to anyone and would come again based on the people working there who made sure our experience was great. read more

Absolutely horrible. No hostess. Was seated by one of the servers to a table that was not set up. Waited over 20 minutes for staff to recognize we had no server. Finally Shannon takes over being the server but she was awful. Extremely inattentive and forgetful. I suppose the manager came over and provided silverware? Unsure as this person did not introduce themselves but just said hey missing silverware, let me get some. Shannon comes back to the table to provide one water. She was supposed to go get more but we see her delivering food to other tables instead of getting water. We have to ask 3 more times for water, finally comes, but without straws. Ok 10 years later she comes with 2 straws instead of 3 lol and then takes 10 more years to get the last straw. Then food comes out and we ask for cheese and oregano. Again, instead of her getting that for the table she serves food to another table. Then proceeds to talk to her coworker and play in her hair. We are still waiting to eat because we want the added toppings but ultimately give up and started eating. The pizza was HORRIBLE. Quality has gone downhill. That was not the matchbox pizza I know and love. Very salty as well. I didn't even take a picture because I thought I was going write a positive updated review. Nope. Looks nothing like the last pizza pic. Just thrown together. No point in trying to wave Shannon down or anybody else for that matter about it. Don't even bother. Menu changes, price hikes and rude customer service lost me as a frequent diner at the Capital Hill Matchbox. This was one of my "go to" restaurants and I hate that I didn't care for their menu "updates"! NOW...their pizza is some of the best in DC! I will order every now and then for nostalgia's sake! We tried to get in for dinner Friday night and found staff completely disorganized, several tables needed to be cleaned and the host said it would be a 30 minute wait. We went a couple doors down, were seated immediately, and had a fantastic meal. Tried again this morning for brunch and after the host and a server walked the (mostly empty) dining room for several minutes we were told they could seat our family but they were only offering a "bottomless" menu at a ridiculous price for adults and children. I really wanted to love everything about this experience, especially based off the fantastic vids on social media. Unfortunately, it was a miss for both my guest and me. We sat outside in perfect weather. There is a great amount of seating and no table feels crowded by another. The menu has a ton of choices and we tried a few things. The main issues were the food being pretty bland and the service being subpar. Everyone was nice, but our main server was quite slow and seemed distracted by something else, perhaps other tables. The portions were also very big and although shareable, just seemed like too much for two people. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits were a bit mushy but the ones in the seafood scramble were cooked perfectly. The lemon aioli in the breakfast sandwich was a bit overpowering. Stood at the front without being acknowledged or seated for a while- that's with a reservation and them not busy. Should have left then. Maybe under staffed? Friday night and the place acted like they couldn't care less to have any business. Finally seated, ordered. Drinks took another inappropriate long period of time to arrive and when their in-house beer arrived (the Matchbox Lager) it was flat. The server actually noticed and said she would fix it and get me another then after another long wait she just came by and asked if I wanted something else. I chose water. Pizza arrived. This is not a pizza place, it is a place that also serves mediocre pizza. And if you have kids the sauce is spicy and it was too much for one of ours so he didn't eat. Spend your time and money somewhere else. Oh, and then the bill came and through some smoke and mirrors the bill shot up to $90 - for two pizzas three kid's sodas and my wife's Margarita. (The waitress said she removed the flat beer) - It is not at all clear on the screen that they are already including a 20% tip (we are a party of 5). Then they ask on the next screen after you swipe your card if you want to tip MORE. I tip always but it was just odd is what I'm saying. Other than a lack of hustle the server was ok and again- she did notice the flat beer without having to be told. In the end it's a Friday night out for dinner with my family in DC that I would never repeat. I wish we had walked out when we were not being noticed at the hostess station way back at the start of the night. However the waiter training her, although a pretty nice guy, was kinda too lax or something. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it was a vibe that he slick didn't wanna be there or training. For example, I wanted a frozen watermelon margarita. He said they didn't have any frozen drinks. I said I'll just have water then & he was like ok. A good server tries to help find another drink bc alcohol is expensive, but water is free I'm sure the owner wants you to have an expensive drink over free water. I have lived in Capitol Hill since 2009, and I have a long track record of enjoying Matchbox. I will never order from them again based on how my order was handled tonight. I ordered 3 pizzas and sliders from their own website, not an independent delivery site. The driver arrived with my 3 pizzas but not my sliders. He didn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish, so I couldn't get his perspective on what happened. But his hand gestures clearly suggested he thought he had fulfilled the order. When I immediately called Matchbox to try to figure out how to get my sliders, i was placed on hold for over 5 minutes two separate times, and then they stopped answering the phone. Eventually they picked up again, and the employee explained that he had no authority to fix the situation - to either get me my sliders or refund my money - without a manager. After a further delay, a manager came on the phone and said my money for the sliders and my tip had been refunded. I do appreciate that I won't be paying for the food I did not receive. But Matchbox screwed up, then made the situation worse by wasting another 20-25 minutes of my time on the phone, and in the end I just ended up not getting what I ordered in the first place. Now.I understand why they don't accept returns of food. Ordered your basic fried wings, mac & cheese, cabbage, and potato salad. Chicken was too salty with no crunch. Mac & cheese was dry with very little cheese and no flavor. Potato salad was watery with a weird taste and cabbage had a weird taste. Waste of money!! Barely ate it and wish I could have returned it, but remembered they have a bo return policy. I didn't think the food or drinks were kick out of the park delicious but they were pretty good for happy hour! I was with a big group of people so we got a bunch of appetizers and I made sure to try every single one to give the people (yelp) what they want! Starting off with the nachos... loaded with meat and sauces they were delectable. The mini burgers were quite dry and I felt that the patty lacked on flavor and the bread was not as fresh as I would have liked. The pizza was mid with it lacking tomato sauce and could have been way cheesier or just have had something more to it. The Mac and cheese balls, now those were really good they had some sort of vodka sauce that I ended up drowning my mini burger in. The bread for the table wasn't very good as it lacked flavor but the marinara sauce on the side of it was a great touch! Drinks: I tried their red sangria and thought it was tasty but quite sweet! They garnished it nicely with some fruits which added to the freshness of the drink! I got the lavender 25 I think it was called which was a low alc content beverage made of sparkling wine with lavender syrup and lemon. I thought it was good but nothing to write home about. The staff was super friendly and accommodating so shout out for that!
