We worked up an appetite after our big adventures in the city. We ended up not too far from The Wharf so we picked a place and walked over. Makers Union was quite busy when we arrived, but we were greeted and seated right away. The space is bright and complimented by artificial cherry blossoms. There was a slight hiccup at the beginning. It seemed like there was a miscommunication between the staff because we didn't have anyone check on us for at least ten minutes. Just as we were considering leaving and going somewhere else, one of the servers was made aware and she came over immediately. Everything went smoothly from then on. We ordered the following: Poké Wings and truffle fries Espresso martini The menu offers a nice range of options, but the poké spoke to me. Even though I had never tried warm poké with cooked veggies before, it was surprisingly enjoyable. The tuna looked fresh and the entire bowl was quite tasty. My husband was craving wings and I was able to convince him to upgrade his side to truffle fries so I could "help" him eat them, which I definitely did. It was a dope experience seeing a GOAT Santana Moss and I think it's awesome that this location is partnered with him. I also appreciated the footballs they handed out for him to sign. The ambiance and interior was great and the customer service was phenomenal. However, the food was super disappointing. We got two burgers which if you had their loyalty program was free. One makers burger and the bbq burger. Both were meh. We also ordered the chicken nachos, fries, and some drinks. I had to knock off the stars for the food being so mid. I feel like this always seems to be the case with makers union, it's always hit or miss no matter the location. For me, the food being good is one of the most important parts of a restaurant. Hubby ordered the flat iron steak with fries, while I ordered the burger. The fries were perfection! Hubby actually liked mine better than his Parmesan fries. He also enjoyed his steak and ordered a Blood Orange Mule, which he thought was refreshing. Our server was great and attentive throughout our visit. For our last night in DC, my daughter and I decided to go to the Wharf, have a stroll and get dinner. The Wharf is a historic area with the oldest fish market in America. It's mostly restaurants and hotels though there's a cute book store at the far end as well. Bc of my daughter's dietary restrictions, we chose Makers Union bc she had more options available. We ordered nachos for our appetizer, I got a cocktail , she got a mocktail and upon recommendation of the server I got the steak salad and my daughter got the vegetarian kebabs. My salad was too salty but the steak itself, while not the medium well I wanted (it was more of a medium rare) was tender and delicious. My daughter mentioned her entree was too salty too but otherwise she enjoyed it. My cocktail was good - stronger than I initially thought it would be. Great brunch restaurant! Had the opportunity to check out Makers Union with a group of friends on a Saturday. We made sure to make a reservation since this is a popular spot on the wharf. When we got there, we did have to wait until 10 minutes for a seat but it was a quick wait. Their brunch menu is absolutely great! We had their bottomless option in which we were able to choose from a number of options for the table. I absolutely loved the French toast and their fried chicken. My friends and I went to this Makers Union location in DC while on a little girls for the weekend. We went for lunch on a Friday afternoon. While the restaurant was pretty full when we got there, we were able to get a table fairly quickly for the three of us. The staff was really nice and helpful with walking us through the menu and answering our questions. I ordered the BBQ Burger. It comes with fries and is so good! I'd definitely recommend getting it if you're looking for a burger at the restaurant. Pleasantly surprised at this establishment. It was very lively on a Thursday night. The inside is a little tight but the food and service makes up for it. Loved their pre-theatre 2 course price fix. Came here for a little solo dinner and sat at the bar. Kevin was the only bartender and he did an amazing job. Service was attentive and the drinks were delicious. The ambience was cute and welcoming and the prices are reasonable comparatively speaking. I had the dragonfruit martini, delicious! The steak and fries were both good! I don't like broccoli and they were out of green beans so I tried their Mac and cheese-not a fan but I'm picky with my Mac and cheese and prefer a more southern, cheesy style. Finished the night with desert-brownie and ice cream. Both were yummy! I needed a touch more ice cream for the ratio to be perfect. All and all a great experience. read more

We wanted to try a new place near the Wharf. We were seated immediately (no reservations). Our server, Kevin gave absolutely A plus services the whole night. Very attentive, checked on us frequently and even allowed us to use an empty table to give us more room for our food. The food was very good. New Zealand lamb chops, cous cous and salad were very good. I also really enjoyed their drinks. I had the Bourbon Club, which was a smoked drink. The atmosphere wasn't overly noisy, so it did allow for conversation. Definitely looking forward to dining there again! read more

Whenever I'm headed to a show at Arena Stage, I usually grab dinner at one of the restaurants at The Wharf first. I've been to most of the spots over there, and this time I just wasn't in the mood for Mi Vida, Limani, La Vie, or Pink Tiger. I even considered Milk & Honey but didn't want such a heavy meal before the play. Since I already enjoy the Makers Union location in Arlington near my office, I figured I'd give this one a try. One thing I love is that they offer happy hour every day--including Sundays! I started with the Spicy Pineapple Margarita , which was refreshing with just the right amount of heat. We shared the wings to kick things off, and they disappeared pretty quickly. For my entrée, I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Salad, which was fresh, flavorful, and had a nice kick. My dad had the salmon, and my mom ordered the lamb chops from the happy hour menu. I was pleasantly surprised that the happy hour portion was still generous and even came with quinoa just like the full-size entrée. We all really enjoyed our meals! The only downside was the service. Our server was very kind, but unfortunately he wasn't very attentive and seemed to forget quite a few things. We had to ask for straws three separate times, and when I needed extra salad dressing, I eventually walked over to the kitchen to get it myself because he stopped at several other tables before heading in that direction. I didn't want my salad sitting there getting warm while I waited. ‍ Price-wise, it's comparable to the Arlington location, which I appreciate. The earlier "Power Hour" specials are an even better value than the regular happy hour prices. The restaurant isn't as massive as some of its Wharf neighbors, but it's still a comfortable space with a really nice bar area that's perfect for grabbing drinks or a casual meal. Overall, I'd definitely return before another show at Arena Stage. Great food, solid happy hour, and a convenient location. If the service becomes a little more consistent, this location could easily earn that fifth star. read more

My friend recently visited DC and I showed her around. We came to the Wharf, and were looking for a restaurant to eat dinner in. Most were surprisingly closed or very empty. We were about to give up and go to another neighborhood, but then we saw Makers Union and decided to give them a try. Their prices were pretty reasonable, and they had a decent menu. I ordered the impossible Kebab meal, but asked to sub it out for chicken and my friend got the Thai soup with a side of sweet potatoes. We both enjoyed the meals, but did find that each dish was too salty. My friend had to add water to her soup to cut the salt, and I didn't finish my entire plate because of the saltiness. Minus the salt, it was a full plate of protein. There was chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, avocado, picked red onions, and white rice with a tangy sauce drizzled over it. All healthy options and very filling dish, but it didn't need that much salt. Aesthetically, it's a large open space restaurant with bar seating and floor seating. It was pretty dead in there, so I think it was just a slow night at the Wharf this past Sunday. read more

We were here on a Sunday for brunch. We got seated outside immediately as we had our dog with us. Staff is friendly and very welcoming. Really cool vibes of the place. On Sundays, they only offer their bottomless brunch which has a selection of appetizers, entrée and deserts. Fried chicken a bit too oily and some what bland. Maryland crab cakes missed the mark. Deserts were small portions of ice-cream with brownie and cake. Makers Union has a sports bar feel with a slightly more upscale bar food menu, so we were hoping it would be a solid casual spot for drinks and dinner. We started with the steak nachos, and while the steak itself was really good, the nachos overall were a little below average. They just didn't have the flavor or balance I was hoping for. We also ordered the fish and chips, but they were very heavy and greasy, to the point where we decided not to finish them. For drinks, I had a margarita that was overly sour and not very enjoyable. My husband had an IPA on draft and said that was really good, so the beer selection may be the better route here. Unfortunately, the service was also not great, which made the overall experience feel a bit underwhelming. I could see this being an okay place to watch a game or grab a beer, but based on our visit, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back for the food or cocktails. read more

Our bartender even hand crafted a birthday drink for my besti. Their prices were awesome. Although we didn't have a reservation as needed the bar was first come first serve and we were able to get seated and have great service. We were eyeing this place for a while and were able to snag same day reservations. We went during brunch and didn't even realize we would be walking into a bottomless brunch. I loved how they portion the food based on the number of people at the table, and if you have any food preferences or allergies they are accommodating with removing those ingredients. The Soccer Mom Sangria hit the spot. I was famished and the indulgent French fry tower was the gift and curse meant for me in that moment. I have only ever been to brunch here before this visit. I now know that the happy hour menu is just as pleasing. Unfortunately our first server was inattentive and unavailable most of our visit. I suspect she was trying to wait us out of happy hour pricing. That frustrated me to say the least. However, we had already received a pleasant greeting and assistance from MJ as we entered the restaurant. Our experience greatly improved with her as our server. It's a cute spot with good eats. We arrived at 5:10 for a 5 PM reservation for 4. A party of three had a reservation and was seated right away. We indicated we had a reservation, and then we waited about 15 minutes while they were clearing a table where the waitstaff sit behind a pillar. The entire dining room was empty except for 3 tables which were 2 tops. I had reserved specifically mentioning. I have a wheelchair. we kept saying we had a reservation. They were ignoring us. When we asked about the other four tops in the dining room, all of which were empty they said they were reserved. My husband, my son and myself we kept saying we have a reservation too. Why can't we sit at one of those tables because sitting behind a pillar in front of a staff station and kitchen entrance would be difficult for me. They kept saying those tables are reserved in 30 minutes and we have to push them together. There was a table along the side of the dining area with a bench and they said that was reserved. So we left. OpenTable sent me a message this morning saying they wanted to know why we had not honored our reservation. I would not have written this review if I did not get that message. But it actually really made me realize the staff at the front were not listening to us. Not communicating well and actually dismissive. Probably the first restaurant we've been to in D.C. where there were absolutely NO negatives in our dining experience. First off, a huge shoutout to this place for serving us COLD water and CLEAN water glasses! Every other place we've been to has somehow managed to give us dirty glasses and room-temperature water, so honestly, the little things matter. Our waiter was fantastic. She kept our water glasses full, gave us some genuinely delicious recommendations, and, most importantly, was incredibly kind and welcoming. She recommended the Southwest Bowl, and even though I wasn't really in the mood for Mexican food, that dish definitely put me in the mood for it. The proportions of the ingredients were spot on, and the chicken was some of the best-blackened chicken I've ever had. You could tell the dish was actually thought through rather than just thrown together. We noticed the little details, like the corn being shaved directly off the cob, the use of real Mexican cheese, and the way everything came together. Everything was seasoned perfectly, with an appropriate amount of spice hidden throughout without overpowering the dish. Absolutely delicious. Even the table across from us seemed to be having a great time -- they absolutely DEVOURed their burgers and chicken. They must've loved it! The restaurant also appears to be Black-owned, which I absolutely love supporting. The older Black lady who checked on us during the meal was incredibly sweet, friendly, and welcoming as well. Overall, this was easily one of our best dining experiences in D.C. Great food, great service, clean glasses, cold water, thoughtful dishes, and genuinely friendly people. Typically I don't expect much from salads ordered from restaurants, but I loved every addition to my meal. I ordered the Mediterranean bowl & added salmon. While the salmon was a little over cooked & VERY salty, I really enjoyed this salad. We also got the lamb kabobs which are a hit every time. We also ordered the pitcher of sangria which was delicious. Overall, the restaurant has a great vibe & the service was excellent.
