While visiting DC I decided to look for black-owned restaurants that were close to my hotel, and this was suggested to me. I ended up ordering the fried wings with mambo sauce and I was delighted. This was some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. I got fries on the side and a golden margarita to drink which came with a 4 oz pour. Let me tell you that one drink has me feeling nice as I walked back to my hotel. The fact that the restaurant is fashioned into a basement with super dope as well. Ambiance on 10. Overall I'll give it a 9 out of 10 and highly recommend if you're planning to visit
Stan's was absolutely delicious and a vibe. I got a Cadillac Margarita that was strong and so good. My baked wings were 10/10. Caesar Salad was good as well. Wait was about 25 mins. But service was great once seated. No complaints and would recommend.
The chicken wings are huge and fried very well. If they had better sauce options that would be nice. Drinks are questionable, very strong but didn't taste like what we ordered so they went to waste. It's very loud and the vibe gives off "after hours spot".
Friday evening around 6:30, party of four, dining in. We waited maybe five minutes to be seated. The host was great -- super accommodating and even let us switch from a table to a booth so we could be more comfortable and out of the way. That small gesture set a good tone right off the bat. Service is where things got a little bumpy. Our server wasn't rude, but she had very low energy and honestly looked like she'd rather be anywhere else. As first-time visitors, that dulled the experience a bit. When we switched seats, we ended up crossing into another server's section, which caused some confusion since both servers were helping us for a short time. The guy whose area we moved into had great energy and was really friendly -- things probably would've gone smoother if he had taken over completely. We still planned on tipping the original server because of the confusion, but we did have to ask multiple times for things, and she would disappear at times. I also noticed her on her phone or just standing around with a blank expression, which made things feel a little awkward. The atmosphere, though? Loud -- in a good way. So loud we actually mistook the bassline of Kehlani's "Folded" for "Hay" by Crucial Conflict at one point. They play a solid mix of music, but it's mostly drowned out by laughter and conversation. This is a no-frills, old-school bar. I once saw someone call Stan's "Black Cheers," and that description really fits. Good mix of people, definitely well represented, mostly 35 and up with a sprinkle of younger folks. Very much an everybody's-welcome vibe. Clean spot, typical bar lighting, neighborhood feel -- but it's clear the word is out. Social media has made it hard to keep local gems a secret. Now the food -- that's where Stan's really shines. The catfish nuggets were fire. Perfectly fried, well-seasoned, and honestly reminded me of a church fish fry. I could come back just for those. The potato skins were another banger -- loaded with cheese and bacon, no shortcuts taken. The stuffed mushrooms were covered in cheese and packed with crabmeat. Solid dish I'd order again without hesitation. The fried wings with mumbo sauce? Off the hook. Fried perfectly, and that mumbo sauce absolutely smacked -- sweet, tangy, with a little kick. I wouldn't have minded if the wings came fully doused in it. People argue all day about the best mumbo sauce in the city, but whatever they're serving here deserves to be in that conversation. The drinks live up to the hype. They're strong -- very strong. You're looking at around $20 a drink, but it makes sense when they're pouring about four ounces per drink. If you order something like a rum and coke, don't be surprised if you get a cup full of rum and a smaller cup with coke to mix. The ratios might be a little wild, but you could easily make two drinks out of one... though where's the fun in that? My favorite of the night was the Ciroc Obama. I'm usually an Old Fashioned guy, and while it was strong, it wasn't my favorite. Lemon drops were also solid and one of the few drinks that came fully mixed. As someone who constantly complains about weak drinks, this place delivered. Despite a few service hiccups, we were in good company and still had a great night. I'd definitely return -- just make sure when you're ready to call it a night, you do it while you can still walk up the stairs to leave.
We dined at Stan's for lunch on a Wednesday. We arrived around 11:45 and there was no wait. It's a bar/restaurant vibe. It was clean and chill. The service was great! And the food was really good! The best fried wings EVER! We thoroughly enjoyed our food and will be back. I love that the food was piping hot when it came out. No complaints.
Stan's is a D.C. staple and easily a 5-star experience. Friendly staff, GREAT food, and if you're looking for a spot to indulge in spirits, Stan's definitely has the strongest drinks in town! I highly suggest getting an order of either the fried or the baked wings - the order is huge and they're so good. The wings also come with mumbo sauce on the side which takes them to the next level. Their Happy Hour is kind-of early (2pm-5pm), but they have great deals on rail cocktails ($10), draft beer ($5.99), and selected appetizers ($4 - $7.99). Stan's doesn't take reservations and the restaurant and bar area aren't big, so during popular dining hours it might be a bit tough finding seating, but it's well worth the wait if you decide to pay them a visit.
My husband and I went to Stans in DC for happy hour, and wow, the drinks lived up to the hype! They were the strongest cocktails I've ever had at a restaurant -- I mean, seriously impressive. This place has great happy hour times and specials. It's on the lower level so it's dark in the bar area but the tables/eating areas are well lit. Service is friendly but busy. They are all very approachable still. They are known for their wings. I got the fried version but I think their baked ones are better. Their mozzarella sticks are good too. Their portions are generous and easily shareable. We love going here when we're in the area

Whewww, let me tell y'all, going to Stan's after brunch was a mistake... but also the best idea ever . Stans is famous for their four-ounce pours, and they do not play about it. I swear they don't skimp on a single drop. I ordered a tequila-based drink (can't even remember what exactly because I was already brunch-drunk lol), but it came out strong. Like, whole-cup-of-tequila strong. You'll feel it quick, so honestly, make Stan's your first stop if you're trying to pregame or have a litt night. We also ordered food and everything hit: * Whole Fried Chicken Wings with Mambo sauce - 10/10. That was my first time trying Mambo sauce (I'm from the South, we don't have it down here), and let me just say...WOW. Sweet, tangy, savory, and the perfect pairing with the crispy wings. * Quesadillas - 10/10. Huge, stuffed with meat, and super flavorful. * Onion Rings - 7/10. Not the freshest batch, but still decent. The vibe at Stan's is chill, classic, and definitely a DC gem. If you know, you know. I went to Stan's to test out their infamous drinks because everyone says they're super strong and let me tell you, they do not skimp on the alcohol! I didn't have a full meal, but I did try their chicken wings and they were amazing. The drink was good, definitely strong, but in a good way. I sat at the bar and the lady behind the bar was just fantastic! she was so lit, had an awesome vibe, and really took great care of us. Overall, the bar vibes were on point, and I even met some cool people just hanging out there. Everything was just good energy and a lot of fun.
Ok whew where to start there is a parking garage right behind the spot and if you get lucky enough there is some street parking as well. When I walked in every member of the staff had a smile, it was a nice vibe the colors and the seating was comfortble. NOW!! Onto the drinks you might want to have a DD or take an Uber because they were nice and strong without being over powering, I had a Margarita a Tequila shot, my friend had a rum punch and a shot also, I must say they were amazing so we doubled it up. The food portions were huge and came out piping hot and seasoned well. I think my servers name was Jauquin big salute to him!!! Met a Friend here on a Tuesday night @ 6p. We were able to be seated promptly. I had the Gold Margarita....tasty. $22. There are no prices on the cocktail menu, so beware. I had the chicken and waffles. I want some more this now!!!!!!!!!!!!1 The waffles had a bit of a sweet taste to them. This also comes with 3 full chicken wings. I recommend this! Stan's was recommended by a few locals for late night eats. The staff and owners were particularly friendly and accommodating. I upped my rating for that alone. We ordered from the night menu and kept it simple with an order of whole wings and catfish medallions. Everything was fresh and made to order. These are jumbo wings which aren't my preference, but they were cooked well. As others have noted, there is virtually no seasoning on the wings or catfish. Don't let the color fool you, it must be paprika. I appreciate subtle flavor of quality ingredients more than most, but everything desperately needed salt and spice. I was surprised because I believe the owners are from India and that cuisine tends to be spice forward. Their Mumbo sauce wasn't much help and is different from others I've tried. Theirs is watery instead of the almost ketchup-like consistently I'm accustomed to. Everyone was having a good time and enjoying the heavy pours. Out of respect for the nearly 50 year OG, I'll rate 3.5 stars. read more

Sunday Brunch I didn't realize Stan's has Brunch. I have been to Stan's plenty times (dinner) and they are known for their fried wings and heavy pours (if you're a drinker) well, their Brunch isn't very popular and I can see why... There is no bottomless mimosa option. This isn't a terrible thing since they are known for heavy pours but a personal (mini) bottle of la Marca for $14+ USD is asinine. I stuck with the usual golden margarita. - I don't know what happened this visit because it was disgusting. Tasted heavily based in OJ I struggled to get through it. In fact, I didn't finish it and ordered a tequila neat. The service was great since no one else was there. Literally there was only one person sitting at the bar and then us at the table. We arrived at noon. People started coming around 1:30 PM EST but it still wasn't as packed as I'm accustomed to Stan's being. We had space to spread out and that's never happened before. Music was playing- so the vibe was there. Food: the food looks better than it tasted. I ordered an omelet and it was jam packed with veggies but still bland. I thought it could have been cheesier. My friend ordered waffles (again they look amazing) but she said they were just "ok" and "look better in the picture" we split a half order of wings (again they were the best thing on the menu). I ordered a side of bacon thinking it would be four pieces for $6 USD as stated on the menu but there were near seven pieces of bacon. This would have been great if they were delicious and crispy but they were chewy and just ok. I ended up only eating two pieces. They do have all day happy hour on Sundays, I imagine to draw people in but they will have to amplify their options and the taste to get me back there for brunch. How have I not reviewed Stan's yet?! I go there religiously whenever I'm in DC. As a wing connoisseur and an appreciator of strong yet delicious cocktails, Stan's is sacred ground. Well, more like a restaurant in the basement but very sacred still. The wings are amazingly crisp and delicious and pair well with a rum punch (emphasis on punch). This is the one place I consistently tell friends to go to if they're in DC and it's where I will continue to go. Service has always been quick, effective and welcoming. The vibe is chill and you have a wide variety of patrons - all seeking, finding and enjoying good wings, strong drinks and happy times. read more

What a fun atmosphere! We stopped by here around 9pm and it was hopping! We loved how loud and lively it was! The service was slow and the waiter had a hard time understanding the drink I wanted, but it all worked out. He was kind and tried to be helpful. The drinks were fine. My margarita wasn't the best I'd ever had, but also not the worst. My friend loved his wine. We also got chicken wings. They were crispy on the outside and juicy and delicious on the inside. The sauce they are served with was different, but good. It was tangy with a bit of a kick. We would probably go back if we were in town again and looking for a casual place to grab a late night drink. read more

Wings were good quality perfectly seasoned and cooked. I do wish they were sauced or offered a dry rub like lemon pepper. Hennessy side car was strong. I didn't like how congested it was with only 1 means of exit - given the crowd it honestly seemed unsafe. There was a wait and table was sticky. Randomly ended up here on a Fri night and had so much fun. If you're not looking for the place it's easy to miss, especially since it's down a couple of levels. Upon walking in the door it looks small but It's deceptively bigger than you think it is Depending on what time you get here depends on how fast of service you'll get. Since we came later in the evening, we didn't get seated for a few. We got two orders of the full wings, a catfish plate, and a few drinks. The drinks were surprising. I ordered a jack and coke, and what came was a glass with ice and jack that was 3/4 full, then a glass half the size of the other with coke. I initially thought they brought me the wrong drink but was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't wrong. The wings were good. Like, good good. I don't know if that's because I had the drink first or if they're just that good, but whatever. I'd go back to get them again. Only had part was the bill came out to just about 200. Ouch. By far, the best chicken wings I have ever had. No other restaurant that I have visited to enjoy chicken wings comes close. Located on the corner of Vermont and L in City Center down a winding flight of stairs in the basement, Stan's is a superb local hangout spot with great vibes, food, and drinks to go around. My server Jacks Jacks (or Jackie) was awesome, and made me feel at home as I quickly determined my drink order and my food order. Throughout the evening, she made sure I had what I needed for water, extra napkins, additional cocktails. She was superb. And as I said at the beginning... THE BEST CHICKEN WINGS I HAVE EVER ATE. I ordered a full portion of uncut wings that were deep fried and battered with a mixture that was simply divine. I am a flats person systematically removing the bones and cartilage to enjoy the perfectly crispy skin and piping hot meat was a joy. Pure joy. Technically, you didn't need the buffalo sauce from the serving bowl in the middle. Because the wings were sooooooo good by themselves. I devoured the drums while some of the flats needed to cool down, using these to dip into sauce. I couldn't get over how delicious the fried battered skin was on the wings. Perfectly cooked, juicy, the skin just magic in your mouth. Also I enjoyed a couple of cocktails: the sidecar was solid, but the deconstructed Paloma was quite a trip. At Stan's, they prepare the cocktail by pouring your choice of tequila (I did Don Julio) in a tall glass 3/4th full with a side of pink grapefruit juice. You determine how much grapefruit juice you want in the tequila glass. I am pretty sure there was at least two shots, maybe three of tequila. I was feeling footloose and fancy free after that drink, let me tell you. I had the grin and was feeling thin. I also enjoy the joys of lemon cake with a side of vanilla ice cream that was the perfect compliment for a good evening out. And you. Can't go wrong having a good evening out at Stan's. The restaurant and bar crackles with energy after work especially as the drinks flow and the food is noshed. People discussing all things politics and more, taking it all in and feeling the vibrations and togetherness. read more
Wow... all I can say... I am so full. Awesome food. Unique atmosphere. Friendly and accommodating service. I am so glad I found this place on Yelp. This place is known as a staple of DC and it's the truth. We got there and it was packed but they got us a table quick. Let's talk about the food. My burger was big and delicious and I ordered the slaw to see how they make it here. It was just how I like it... not too creamy, it was crunchy and I loved every bite. Let's put it this way about my burger... it was so good that my wife took a piece of it away from me!!! My wife ordered the tenders and a baked potato. The potato was a good size and came with bacon and sour cream and butter. She loved it. My daughter ordered the half wings with mashed potatoes. Wings have a great rub on them and the masked potatoes came as a huge portion and were a good garlicky flavor. All in all... great experience!!!! read more

I've heard for awhile that Stan's is a staple in DC for its strong drinks and it's wings so once I started craving wings I knew I had to go. When I went the timing lined up perfectly because it was still happy hour and I found a parking spot right in front of the restaurant (winning lol). The bar was pretty full when we got there around 4:15 pm and the dining room only had a couple of people there. The chairs were super comfortable and the bar gives a very homey neighborhood vibe. We had the best server, Joaquin. He was so friendly and kind, popping in at the right time to check in on us and he was so laid back. We ordered their mozzarella sticks, fries and some wings. On top of that we got a tequila sour and a beer. The drink was strong and the wings were fried to perfection. They could've had a little more seasoning in my opinion but still delicious and paired well with the mumbo sauce. Everything else was your average bar food. We ended up leaving with left over wings and paying about $50 which I think is not bad for drinking and eating in the city and leaving full. Current HH hours? Site says until 5pm (seems super early) but I saw a recent (today recent) comment on another DC based blog that HH ends at 8pm.

No, Stan's is not family friendly. Neither you nor your 7 year-old would be comfortable with a child in that environment. Stan's is a bar. Most people go for strong drinks and wings.
What are the prices?
The prices were in the range of $10 for an appetizer to $25.00 for an entree.
