During crab season this place has my favorite crab and cheese omelette. The crab is always fresh without any shells and plentiful in the omelette. It's also a solid option for late night drinks and bar food at reasonable prices. The service sometimes can be spotty, meaning that you may have to flag down a server or a bartender, even if the place isn't crazy busy. The staff is friendly and the regulars are too if you are alone and you sit at the bar, you will not feel weird about it. Definitely stay outside on spring or summer days when the farmers market is all set up. It's definitely a favorite Neighbourhood hang! I've ordered from Tunnicliff's Tavern multiple times and overall it's a solid spot for classic American bar food. They have a great assortment of options, and the food is consistently satisfying. I'll be honest, I'm not a huge sports fan, and they usually have a lot of games on, so I tend to stick with pickup or delivery to avoid the wait and the crowd haha. That said, the pickup experience can be a bit confusing. You actually have to walk into the black tent and into the building before entering the first door on the right, which isn't very clear if you're new. The first few times I picked up an order, I waited at the podium for about 10 minutes with no assistance. When I finally asked a server, I was told, "I don't have any order in my hand," which wasn't very helpful. After another wait, someone from the back came out and recognized I was there for a delivery order. I think this place would really benefit from clearer instructions for pickup and better communication with customers. The food itself is good, but the process could definitely be smoother. read more

I order a crispy chick sandwich one time and it was great but then I had a bad experience since then that first crispy chicken sandwich has been the ONLY time my order was correct and tasty! It's like whoever's cooking doesn't read or know how to read because there's no way you don't under stand simple order request! I don't know the vibe in person but I can't imagine going to dine in at this point! The crab cake sandwich meal was missing things that it was said to come with, the crab cake itself was dry AF, small as hell, and flavorless... Also the sweet potato fries were BURNT smh! I tried Tunnicliff's Tavern on a whim while in Eastern Market on a Friday evening. Many of the surrounding restaurants were already closed, so options were slim. I'd visited Tunnicliff's Tavern several years ago (pre-COVID), but never got a chance to eat anything because our waitress gave us water and never returned to take our order. We left after waiting about 15 minutes. After my last experience, I was hesitant, but years had passed, so I figured things would be different. Patrons seat themselves and we given water right away. Our waitress returned to take our orders, so all seemed great. The food arrived and it was pretty good. Not the greatest, but definitely not bad. What was odd was that our waitress never came to check on me and my dining partner. She didn't ask how our meals were, she didn't refill our water glasses, nothing. It got to the point where I thought we'd have to go to the bar to pay our bill because we hadn't seen our waitress inside the restaurant in good 30 minutes. Somehow we caught her attention and paid our bill. As we left, I noticed that she tended to patrons on the patio. I wondered why she even had tables inside the restaurant - there was at least one other waitress - if she spent all of her time outside. Don't get me wrong, out waitress was extremely nice, but her ability to check on her customers inside the restaurant was severely lacking. It was an overall odd experience, but I don't think I'll be returning to Tunnicliff's Tavern again. I've learned my lesson. read more

I don't usually go out of my way to write reviews like this, but this one is warranted. Tunnicliff's at Eastern Market has a reputation problem--and it's not new. I recently saw a couple speak out about being treated differently because of their race. Let's be clear--that's racial discrimination. Plain and simple. And unfortunately, it didn't surprise me. I'm old DC. I've been around long enough to know how people are supposed to be treated in this city, and I had my own experience at this place years ago that made it clear I wasn't welcome the same way others were. I left and never came back. Seeing the same type of situation happening again tells me nothing has changed. On top of that, the food is nothing to write home about. Very average, and the atmosphere leans heavily into "bar regulars only" energy. Not exactly a place where everyone feels comfortable walking in. DC is far too diverse--and has too many great options--for anyone to spend their money somewhere that doesn't treat people with basic respect. I'm sharing this to support those who spoke up and to make others aware. Do better. It's long overdue. read more

Tunnicliffs is reliable, I often order delivery for sandwiches at lunchtime or wings and they're always pretty good and transport well. This was a late night pizza and it wasn't the best, but still good enough for an 11pm snack. It was delivered so would have been better out hot. read more

I really enjoyed my chili. It had the perfect amount of heat for me and the cornbread was so fresh. If you don't like much spice, I'd recommend having a different soup. The Greek salad was fresh but either lacking dressing or it just didn't have any flavor. Great atmosphere here! It's a cozy neighborhood restaurant with a feeling of tradition. The front is a little more standard pub vibes with barstools and tv's playing sports. Towards the back, is a little bit more quiet with ample tables for families or get togethers. If you're looking for a quick bite or a friendly outdoor meal on their patio, they aim to please. They're located in a convenient location across from Eastern Market. I came here on a Saturday at 1 with 3 friends. The inside is very much a sports bar and people were drinking and watching sports. They also do a $4 irish coffee/margarita special. I got the blueberry pancake and it tasted homemade. It seemed like they used real blueberries. Pancake wasn't overly sweet which I liked. My roommate got the margarita pizza and rated it a 8/10. It's a lot for one person so you might be able to make two servings out of it. Seemed like a standard pizza. Their breakfast pizza with eggs seemed good, too. But...one of my burger criteria to measure is, does the bun stay together for the whole burger. In this case, it didn't. So, that's probably why this was a 3*. Tasty burger patty with nice veggies and bacon. Overall, it was a solid, beefy looking handheld. Can substitute the fries for other options. It was a hard choice between the sweet potato fries and tater tots. Give them a try especially on a nice, sunny day. read more

Unfortunately, they brought me out a perfectly cooked cheese pizza, and just took it back and added pepperoni and cooked it more so it was a bit over cooked in my opinion and my partner had his food and I had to wait. First time back at Tunnicliffs after being away since May 2018 due to relocating outside DC. Better than I remember hence upgrading my review from a 4 to a solid 5! Scott the manager / bar tender was still on scene and a class act. Sound beer selection, wine for my guest, clean / cold glasses. Cheeseburger was perfectly cooked to medium as requested, side salad fresh (no wilted lettuce) - all condiments clean (to include lid caps). Fish and chips could not have been better....crispy batter, not oily, clean fryer oil, slaw fresh, not too much mayo. Strong wifi. As stated, it was already really good, but this visit took it up a notch. We had an OK lunch here today. I ordered the sesame tuna salad. It wasn't great, but it was definitely better than the fish & chips I had the last time I was here. I wish the tuna had been more flavorful. My husband had the turkey club. He thought it was OK. His sandwich came with French fries, & I had some of them--again. they weren't great. read more

Again, I wish I could do a 3.5. Please don't let this 3 keep you from trying this place out. A group of five of us wanted a Capitol Hill experience so we decided to try this tavern. It was pretty dead at 6 pm when we arrived so we quickly got a table. The highlight of our entire visit was the waitress, very personable and helpful with drink suggestions and food suggestions. Probably of all of our food, the Ruben was the highlight. I personally tried the crab cakes---good flavor but I would have preferred them to be a bit crispier. They had at least three local beers on tap which is always a plus for me. Just remember, this is a tavern in the true sense of the word. (That's a compliment.) By the time we left (around 10 PM--so you see we did enjoy our time there!), the place was getting a little more crowded. I would like to visit here for lunch. read more

It's a nice tavern we decided to go into to try and leave the heat on a hot day. We were able to grab a couple drinks and watch the baseball game that was on. There's plenty of beers on tap and they even had a cider which we decided to go for. The tavern has a pretty cool atmosphere and looks like it would be a nice place for dinner. Unfortunately, we had just eaten so didn't have a chance to try the food. It's a chill place to watch the game during the day. It's also located right near the Eastern Market. I seemed to have almost no phone service while I was here. You'll have to ask for the wifi code as it's not written anywhere. read more

It's a pub! Busy with plenty of seats all the way through. Efficient service. Margarita pizza was lovely and fresh with plenty of tomatoes. Turkey burger was tasty and not too large to overface. Lots of choice in drinks too, with some nice beers available. read more

I meandered into Tunnicliff's on a September Saturday visit to DC's Eastern Market, where I had gone to find The World's Best Pancakes (read my separate reviews for all the news). Some co-workers were coming to join me for brunch and I was drawn in by Tunnicliff's promise of $5 Bloody Marys. Coming from a place where the $5 cocktail is pretty much a thing of the past, I was more than happy to drink one (or was it two) of these bad boys while waiting for my friends. Soon they arrived and, after a bit of a wait, we were seated outside. They ordered breakfast and I shared a breakfast pizza, which was mighty tasty, though since I'd already eaten pancakes I wasn't super hungry. 9 years later and I'm back! The food at Tunnicliff's is the best tavern food I've had in a very long time. There's a comfort in coming back to a place you enjoyed and a reason it's always packed! Happy Hour is from 3-7 daily, offering a variety of drinks on specials. The last few visits we tried a few new menu items. The mozzarella sticks are really good! The breading is homemade and the cheese is the stringiest I've experienced in long time! Next on our taste test was the Buffalo chicken salad. It was crisp and refreshing, something that's been a staple for a while, and it tastes so good. There's a hint of blue cheese mixed into the mozzarella and marinara- an instant hit! It's clear that the Buffalo sauce they create here is unmatched; it's a bit sweet and a bit spicy all at the same time. The artichoke and spinach dip is so tasty, it's thick and creamy, with lots of chunky veggies and served with homemade flatbread sprinkled with cheese. Micah has been the bartender we've seen the most, he has a great sense of humor and is always sharing random facts, from music to sports to rules of the road. Best comfort food ever! Last year when beef stroganoff was added to the Sunday dine in menu, I asked if it could be added to Ubereats because it's my granny's favorite meal, but due to Alzheimer's she was to the point of being unable to dine in, and I cannot always get to the restaurant to pickup our to-go dinner, and my hamburger helper version is not acceptable to her They very kindly agreed meaning granny was able to enjoy her favorite until she passed this week. A very special thank you to the owner and entire staff for going above and beyond. It may not seem like much to many, but this meant the world to me in her last few months.
