This deli has a little bit of everything. They have coffee, soup, chips, pastries, and sandwiches. There is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance from the deli, but it may be difficult to find a spot during peak hours. The deli has a small dining area for patrons. My interaction with the staff was limited, but they were friendly enough. I ordered a steak and cheese sub. It was ready pretty quickly, in less than 5 minutes. The sub was ok. I felt that it had less meat than other steak-and-cheese sandwiches I had. It was also cooler than I expected. The meat was lukewarm. It had a little spice, which I liked. But outside of that, I did not like the flavor. The sub came with a pickle, which looked very sick. It tasted even sicker. I could not even finish it. My experience with this deli was ok. I may eat here again and try something different, but it will not be my first choice. read more

Jack's is a circus and with that, welcome to the big top and enjoy the show. I have been expanding my reach for lunch while in the office. Most people I work with don't like to venture out too much, but for me, I will put in the footwork to find a new place that I can throw into my rotation. After a quick walk I was here and thrown into the madness with everyone else. I purposefully showed up after what I though was going to be the lunch rush and was surprised by the amount of people still piling in to grab themselves some lunch like me. I'm going to be honest here, I had no idea what I was doing in here as it was my first visit. I had no idea how things worked in this circus, but I was going to try my best to fit in. When I got inside I stood in a line that I though was the place to be. I had no clue if this is how this place flowed, but I went with it. Luckily for me it was the right thing to do. That line had constant movement and before I knew it I was at the front and placing my order. I ordered two sandwiches and fries (they were on special that day). Then this is where you get to sit back and enjoy the show. After you order you are given your number for your order and you kind of just get pushed off to the sides and are able to take it all in. This is where I realized that there really isn't any one particular way to go about getting food in here. In the middle of it all is the hot/cold bar where you can order salads, sides and soups. I was wondering how some people were getting out of here so fast and that was it, some knew they wanted to just have some soup or nosh on a salad and that was the way for them. As I am watching the show in front of me, I keep getting pushed back further and further to what I am assuming is a corridor that connects to the main building or the restrooms. I kept seeing people getting their orders as I stood there. Finally they called my number and told me I still had to wait for the fries. If I would have known it was going to take that long I probably wouldn't have ordered them. But that also let me look over the coolers for a drink and then eventually get a dessert, even though I didn't need one. My fries were finally done and I got in line to pay. The circus continues here as there are multiple lines, but no one knows which one they should be getting into. With my food in hand and having paid, I was finally able to get out the door and back to my office. I ordered two sandwiches here because I knew I was going to be in the office late that evening and it was like killing two birds with one stone type of situation. For my lunchtime sandwich I went with a BLT as I have been on that kick for a minute now. It was delicious and I was happy to have that pickle wrapped up in there with it. For my later meal I went with an egg salad sandwich which I knew would hold better in a fridge for later. Also paired with a pickle. My soda choice matched perfectly and that, my friends, is how you get a show with your meal. Go to a vibrantly busy business and watch the mishmash of people buzz about. My go to spot when I'm around the judiciary square area for breakfast. NY style deli but also has grits and biscuits. Corned beef always hits the spot. They also make fresh sandwiches. I would recommend the sausage, egg, and cheese, on a croissant. Can't go wrong with a bagel either. read more

The food was delicious but the cooks really need to learn the English Language better for taking orders. They ended up getting my order wrong to the point another worker had to tell them in Spanish what I wanted. That was frustrating but they ended up getting the order correct & it was very good. Came through to try this place out for lunch. Noticed from the window that this place was pretty popular, and their seemed to be regulars. Noticed that there are specials, I believe daily specials. I saw a sandwich, chips, and soda for less than $10. Not a bad deal. On this date I got a California club, that had turkey, bacon, cheese, and avocado. The sandwich comes on a croissant, but on this date, I got it on a sub roll. I must admit, I was quite pleased with the sandwich. It was a healthy sized sandwich and everything was fresh. It was a fair amount. I think it would have been a better deal if I would have gotten it on special. They also have chips/sodas; they have varying sizes and prices. Additionally, they have a hot bar, but I swear, that stuff did not look very appetizing. Concern the staff that took my order at the sandwich bar was a wee bit rude, barely acknowledged you, barely wanted to answer any questions. Decent lunch, not knocking the review for the quality of the food, I got a New Yorker, with Swiss cheese. The New Yorker comes with pastrami and corned beef. Got it also with a sub roll and it comes with a pickle. Total came out to $12. Where I am disappointed is that the sandwich felt small (you could almost count the amount of slices of meat). I guess maybe I'd give it the benefit of the doubt because they have a nice selection of drinks, and their breakfast is indeed really good. It's a nice place to get something quick, but that's about it. I would return here for future visits because of the good quality of food. The meats were not fatty and the Swiss cheese was layered well. And the pickle was good too. That's good enough for me. read more

Service is a bit brusque, but the turkey Reuben I typically order is delicious, and they're flexible about modifications. The meat is high-quality, and portions are generous, which justifies the $9.50 the sandwich costs after tax. Salad bar offerings are varied in quality (I saw a dubious-looking stew the other day, but my coworkers swear by the tuna salad), and there are both hot and cold options. There are no places to eat in the National Mall area unless you walk through the side streets into the parallel streets. A few of us were feeling the hot weather, thirsty, hungry and tired from walking all those long blocks, even I usually do not like deli sandwiches, I was looking for a cooling spot. I have absolutely no idea how this place has received 4 stars. Okay, well maybe I can see the charm in a 6-7 dollar lunch in Judiciary/Archives area, but at what cost?! First a little background, you walk into the place and it's a subway-deli counter type of deal on the left and a Chinese Buffet thing on the right (yes actual Chinese buffet items). The smell is something I'll remember for quite some while, as it had that NY Chinatown funk. Being that all you Yelpers and Jack's itself blew its spot up on the Corned beef there I went for a Jumbo Rubin. Now it may be because I'm Jewish, or the fact that I just went to NY and ate at Katz's, or the fact that I got pulled in by their hot corned beef sign ... but i was UPHAULED by the sandwich I got. They really can't be serious pulling a brick of frozen corned beef out and then throwing it on the mini griddle in the back (which was FILTHY btw). The corned beef was like shoe leather and the bread was soggy. This is a signature sandwich and something they are proud of? The restaurant could have been much cleaner as well. So why 2 stars instead of 1? I feel that if you are in a rush and absolutely have to eat something then it's not the end of the world. However, there is a salad place and an au bon pi 100 ft away. I visited this particular deli about a week ago and wasn't impressed but totally surprised at the attitudes behind the deli counter and register. This place has mediocre food that sits around for quite some time in the buffet area. I remember asking one of the preparers if I could have hotter potatoes and she replied, "We're not cooking anymore today." I was surprised because when I looked at my watch, it was 1:12 p.m. As I approached the register, the cashier said absolutely nothing. I gave her my money and as she returned my change, I received an expression not of gratitude, rather of 'what else do you want'. Needless to say, I will never eat at this rat-hole again. read more

Solid place. More low key than Potbelly's which I would say is the closest comparison in the area. I had the Reuben which was pretty good. It was about $8 which was maybe a little pricy, but there was a good amount of meat on it and it was enough food that I didn't need any sides. They have a salad bar here that looked like it had some good side salads (potato salad, coleslaw, etc.) on it. The hot bar looked like it had fresh food on it, but it was an odd mix of breaded meat, lo mein, etc. I wouldn't say that this would necessarily be my first choice in the neighborhood, but it was good and the service was fast so I'll probably go back sometime soon. read more

Great sandwiches for lunch. I usually go twice a week for coffee and a breakfast sandwich though. Bagel with egg and cheese is less than $3 (lunch sandwiches will run you close to $10). The food at the breakfast bar isn't so great (eggs are a bit runny and the sausage is overcooked; the grits were ok though). But I haven't tried the sweet breakfast options yet. I'll definitely try some of the soups after reading these reviews. Remember that it's cash only though. Kind of annoying, but not enough to deter me from this place. read more

Famous for corned beef. This Capitol Hill neighborhood Deli is a good place for lunch. Sandwiches made to order. Six months ago, I was a little disappointed they don't serve chicken breast, but the counter staff recommended tuna melt on rye. It was great! I've been back twice a week ever since. Sandwich specials practically everyday, including occasional steak n cheese... Hit the salad bar if you want to graze, only beware, the price for the buffet is by the pound. Dirty Potato Chips or fried potato wedges. Chicken Soup, Chowder and just-right Chili available. Family style seating at lunch. Coffee in the style of Seattle's Best. Street parking or the Oh-so-expensive Central Park garage around the corner. Take Metro-Rail to the Judiciary Square station, take the 4th Street Courthouse exit and walk one and a half blocks to save the hassle and expense of parking. Primarily Lunch. read more

I walk here every day as it is one block away from where I work. The coffee is great and they have a great selection of food and drink. The DC lottery addicts make a presence every day by playing scratch-offs and the numbers. Hint...don't get in their way! I've been coming here for lunch for 5 years, & I always get the same thing: the Cloak & Dagger (corned beef, coleslaw) on toasted rye + a Dr Brown's Diet Cream soda. The fact that I've never felt the need to explore the menu further should speak to the quality of the sandwich! The Cloak & Dagger itself is deceptively simple: approximately 1/2 lb of corned beef + coleslaw (house-made?). It comes with a spear of dill pickle rolled into its foil. But oh! is it GOOD! Don't write me off as naive, either. I've eaten many corned beef & coleslaw sandwiches at many different delis/cafes. NONE of them were as remotely good as the C&D. They all tended to be more expensive as well, which seems counter-intuitive to me; LESS meat for MORE money???? The drink selection is quite good as well. Not only do they sell Dr Brown Cream/ diet Cream/ Black Cherry/ diet Black Cherry, but there are many varieties of fruit drink, bottled waters (both still & sparkling) & the usual Coke/Pepsi products. I usually stock up on the Dr B's, & then find myself drinking all of them the same day! *blushes* The people making the food are primarily Hispanic, but the women who (apparently) run the place are Korean who have a good command of English. The seating is limited; I try to avoid the lunch rush, & eat either around 11 or after 1, as there wouldn't be available seating around 12. In a nutshell: Jack's Famous Deli is a fairly well-kept Capitol Hill secret. Those who are in on the secret tend to guard it well; it's just too small for large groups of hungry tourists or inquisitive foodies. VEGETARIANS: You can get a veggie sandwich (no cheese, no avo) for $3.84 INCLUDING TAX. And it's good, too - my no-frills veggie came piled high with tomatoes (none of that "one tomato for show" business), plus cucumber, mushrooms, bell pepper, sprouts, and the expected lettuce and red onion. Totally delicious. Pickle on the side. The salad bar looks good (especially the Greek salad) but I haven't tried it. Service is fast - I was in and out at 12 pm in 5-6 minutes. I had the pastrami on rye with russian and cole slaw for around $6 + tax. I'm a sucker for any pastrami, but this pastrami was solid: thin-sliced, warm, tender, and had a good ratio of fat:meat. This place obviously doesn't compare to Katz's (NYC) or Langer's (LA), but it's solid for a cheap work or tourist lunch. I say, for pastrami (and maybe corned beef--haven't tried it) go here; for fresh sliced turkey, ham, and roast beef go across the street to New Course. The salad bar here looked ok, but doubt I'll try it for the price/quality. read more
