Carvings is a small, local deli in Washington, DC, where I recently picked up lunch to-go. It has the feel of a mom-and-pop shop, and with roots going back to 2008, it clearly has staying power. That said, the pricing structure left me scratching my head. For instance, you can get a sandwich *with fries* for a set price--but ordering just a sandwich (no fries) will still run you about the same. In my case, I wanted a plain chicken sandwich--just chicken, cheese, and sauce (though there was less than I thought there'd be)--and was told it would cost the same as the full combo. I asked for chips instead of fries, and that was fine, but it didn't feel like a great value. To be fair, running a small business in DC is no cheap feat, and I understand that pricing likely reflects operating costs. Still, $17 for a basic chicken sandwich and a bag of chips feels steep--especially with minimal toppings and limited sauce. The menu might benefit from a more flexible or à la carte pricing model, especially for those who want just a sandwich without sides. Also, the selection of add-ons like chips, drinks, or snacks seemed fairly limited in store. I respect the effort to keep things going in a tough market--but a few tweaks to the menu and pricing structure could go a long way toward enhancing the customer experience. read more

This place is tiny tiny and very oriented towards the college crowd, but that's kind of what you'd expect from something right near GW. That said they had a great selection of sandwiches and other items. Also good selection of vegetarian options. The service was super quick and the sandwich was delightful. The staff were very friendly. The description if you search for it says it's in the dorm, but it has its own store front, so don't be deterred and think you have to randomly wander through a dorm to find the place. Definitely check it out if you have the chance! read more

Nah, never again. The photos look pretty good. Jog on, you poor soul. I got a hot pepper turkey sub with a side salad. The sandwich itself was light as a feather. Yes, lots of bread, but very little in between it. Hot pepper turkey. Hmm. Did I see any hot, sweet peppers at all? I don't think so. Pepperjack cheese, ok. But that's not how it was described! Also, the cheese was nasty. Legitimately smelled like vomit. It was a struggle to eat this sandwich. And the salad? Well, I had to pick through it and throw away roughly a third of it because it was so wilted and nasty. Did I come here to get e coli? Zero reason to ever visit this place. read more

A great no-frills deli. Had the chicken sandwich and fries. It was hot, fresh, a little spicy and delicious. Served with a large portion of hot fries. I'll come back. read more

The employees also dissed my friend in Spanish thinking we didn't know what they were saying. Watered down coffee.

Carvings has comfort food, like chicken tenders, fries, & quesadillas, and they are open really late! They cater to the college crowd in Foggy Bottom. They have a vast selection of different sodas and kombuchas. They also have a variety of grab and go packaged snacks. I had a chicken Caesar wrap; it was so yummy! The chicken tenders and fries are solid, too! The prices are reasonable. The late hours are what make this place great! read more

Carvings - Wings and fries with buffalo sauce and blue cheese. Do you see any of the two sauces? Then they have the nerve if I'd like any sauce? - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Stopped in for a late night meal (1am) had the cheeseburger & fries.. made to order, very fresh!

This was our first time I got the chicken pesto and mozzarella sticks and my girlfriend got the burger. I loved the crispy chicken and pesto on ciabatta and the mozzarella sticks were nothing to complain about good fry and not caked in oil. The burger was delicious and the fry's(lacking just a hair of salt) were super crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside. Overall first impressions 5/5 read more

Rude cashier. Coffee tasted watered down. Food was 2/5. Not a good atmosphere. Would not recommend.

The breakfast burrito is warm, soft and yummy!!!!!!! The service was amazing I felt like I was appreciated just for being there and accepted for who I am. I loved the music choice!! read more

This place is located at Foggybottom and it's perfect for me because I live like five minutes away. The prices are cheap and their food is good. Would recommend hands down read more

Steak and cheese sandwich is awesome! This is a twist on Philly cheesesteak with a few extras. They are also well priced for the area.

Breakfast here is really good and quick. Their breakfast burrito is my favorite thing. Not a huge fan of the late night options but it's the best thing for the students in the area to get really late at night. Overall not my favorite place in the area for food but good for a quick bite and reliable. read more

How do you make a breakfast burrito and throw a whole pepper in it? Like are you joking? All I tasted was pepper. Horrible place, 10/10 do not recommend to your friends. Food was bland and not enjoyable. read more

Carvings is your pretty standard lunch/dinner, carry-out, quick order place. They serve hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, soups, and some salads. I have never had their breakfast but I've heard that's also pretty good. Everything at Carvings is pretty standard. I don't think you're in danger of anything "blowing you away" here, but what they do offer is reliably good. My recommendation would be the Cowboy Burger, because if there's one thing I love in this world it is flavoring meat with other meats! The fries are good as well. The prices are pretty reasonable for the area, and the serving and portion size are plenty generous. Plus there's the added bonus that you aren't just going to Subway, or Au-bon-pan (of which, I am not a fan). Be warned, this is a popular stop for George Washington students, so expect to see several college-types at any given time at the restaurant, or in line. I'll be 100% totally transparent in this review. Part of the appeal of Carvings to me was that I lived right across the street. But, I also knew that whenever I went here I wouldn't pay to much, and the burger was going to be good. Maybe not great, but solidly above average. If you're really looking for an AMAZING burger that will KNOCK your socks off, I'd recommend Burger, Taps, and Shakes (BTS) just up the street. If you're just looking for a quick bite, or something simple and not super expensive, Carvings won't disappoint. read more

Great customer service and delicious food! Always enjoy coming here for a late night treat.

Ordered breakfast to go: The ham, egg and cheese sandwich was okay - nothing spectacular to rave about but also nothing bad either. Ordered it on an English muffin but it looked more like a roll. The BLT my boyfriend ordered came on untoasted white bread - he describes the sandwich as basic. Overall it was okay, good for a quick grab-and-go. read more

Loved Carvings until 2 seconds ago, when the woman behind the counter told me I couldn't have any hot sauce to accompany my order. I ordered a breakfast burrito and hash browns, she gave me a salsa for the burrito, ketchup for the hash browns, and refused to give a packet of hot sauce. She said "you can only have 2", so I told her "I want to buy some then, because I want hot sauce with my order". There's no minimum amount for condiments listed on the menu. Seems made up, lost a frequent customer behind being cheap, after charging $10 for a burrito. She actually rang the hot sauce up for $.55 read more

A good basic place to get fast food. The staff was very nice with smiles all around and the food was made on the grill in front of you. No heat lamps needed. Bagel, egg and Meat (bacon, ham, turkey sausage, turkey bacon or regular sausage) was very tasty for under $4. Compared to $12 @ my hotel well worth the walk. Not a lot of seating inside but I was taking it to go. I will back. read more

A+ for convenience. If you need a breakfast sandwich or granola bar stat & can't bear the thought of spending an extra two minutes trekking to Dunkin Donuts, Subway, or even CVS, then Carvings will do. But otherwise, probably best to avoid the place if you're searching for something one step above soggy French fries, greasy quesadillas, & bitter iced coffee housed directly below a freshman dorm. read more

Customer service far exceeded my expectations. I come here often for food. The food is good and very reasonably priced. Today I came for an ice latte and had to wait a couple minutes. It wasn't a bad wait maybe 5 minutes but the person managing the operations apologized and gave me a great discount. Definitely coming back and recommending to others. read more

Regular stop for my son, who attends George Washington University. We enjoyed lunch here while packing up his dorm room for the end of the year. Great local atmosphere and quite an extensive menu. Everything is reasonably priced and cooked to order. My son ordered a Tuna Melt and I selected the Gyro. While I've never actually had a gyro with sliced cucumbers and cheese in a pocket-pita, it was a pretty good sandwich. Just not a traditional gyro that I expected. Overall a great local stop for a quick bite and I'm sure we'll be back again in the future. read more

I'm a GWU freshmen and I come to this place quite a few time because I dorm right next door. To sum it up this place serves a lot of different food at average levels of quality. It has some standout items like their burgers, but their food is generally nothing special. I usually eat here for convenience. Not to say the food isn't good, but there is nothing that truly stands out and worth putting on a to-do list. read more

I've been going to carvings ever since I was a freshman at GW, and I've always viewed it as convenient solid food. However, there has been a change of management and that has absolutely ruined carvings. The food still tastes the same, but the prices are ridiculous now and they even charge you extra for small ketchup packets (wtf?) I don't know what the new owner is thinking but my friends and I will not be back, and I'm pretty sure most GW kids will stop coming. Know your market, it is not fancy food or coffee and it will never be that, so the prices should reflect. But paying close to $20 for some chicken tenders, soggy fries, and a coke? No sir, The hospital dining hall even makes better food than carvings. Also if you want to charge higher prices maybe actually clean the restaurant and put some care into the design, carvings is a laughing stock now. read more

Okay - YUM! I love this place. I think that their quality has declined slightly after being reopened by new owners. But I still love their quesadilla and fries! read more

So since the previous owners retired the place isn't the same. All my favorites were removed from the menu, the quality is not the same, and they never have anything (drinks, snacks) in stock. It makes me really sad. I've been going there for years. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Carvings used to be the spot to go for average tasting, cheap food. Now carvings is wildly expensive and the food has even gone down in quality. I will not be back and I will advise others to not go as well. It seems all the staff has changed as well, so I'm assuming there has been a change of management. The location has a lot of potential but sadly, the price, horrible cleanliness, and horrible food ruins any potential they had. I understand needing to pay rent, but you are losing more customers than gaining with all these changes. read more

The service is amazing! Workers are extremely nice & patient. The food is incredible. Definitely going back.

Came here for lunch today. Ordered fried shrimp and fries. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the fries were not greasy and very tasty. This was a pleasant find... the restaurant located on F street does not a lot on atmosphere as it is really just a take out place so I encourage you to order from here but go outside to enjoy the meal as there is not a lot of personal space inside the cafe. read more

I used to come here a lot last year, but they have fallen off. I walked in, to be ignored by three women working behind the counter. They finally asked me what I want, I asked for the Italian sandwich with a scooped out sub roll. Last year they had no issue doing this for me. Never and issue, before but I get the sandwich, it's soggy with dressing because they poured a vat of it on there. I said, to hell with it and ate. I eat the first bite and towards the end of the first half my sandwich starts giving me a certain tang. I put it down, open the other half and see that my lettuce is rotting, and the meat has a sticky film over it. It was old meat, and it was starting to get bad, I sniff it and it smelled horrible. I don't think I'll be back for their food. read more

Carvings - I kept tasting something wierd they aren't using super fresh toppings. - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

It's kind of a secret. But not really. Carvings is tenderly nestled away within a large residential building along F Street in Foggy Bottom. You can access it from the outside so no need to worry about elbowing past college students returning to their dorm rooms. It serves pretty standard grill fare - burgers and sandwiches to order, with breakfast items as well. There are plenty of pre-made items as well and a bountiful selection of snacks and beverages. The colorful array of Asian candies and other items add some unique zest to the locale. Personally, I think they planned to call it "Cravings" in an attempt to attract the late-night college crowd and simply misspelled the restaurant. They don't do a whole lot of carving in general - the sandwiches are decent but not the freshest ingredients. Fries, that typically come with the burgers, are the thick 'n crispy kind of goodness and should leave you happy. Carvings is actually similar, if not an exact replica, of the "Gallery Market" grill that is located on 23rd street - also in a college residence building. Clearly the same ownership and many of the same items. It's not a bad option for a quick lunch at typical DC prices. Enjoy. read more

Food is decent and not too expensive but I don't think there's been a single time when I've came here and they didn't leave an ingredient out of my food. Just got a veggie omelette today and it was missing tomatoes. I also got mozzarella sticks and the marinara sauce they served with it was sour and obviously long expired. They also need to update their menu because they no longer have home fries but don't tell you, they'll just put a hash brown, which I'm not a fan of. Nice staff is all they have going. read more

I love Carvings. Their prices are reasonable, they give you a ton of food, and the Korean couple that owns it is extremely nice. The chicken quesadilla is big enough for 2 meals (in my opinion), the turkey burger is solid, and the bulgolgi comes with enough rice to feed a family of four. Oh and the fries? Get them. There are a few booths and tables at the front for you to sit if you so choose. They also carry single packets of medicine (Aleve, Tylenol, etc), a large assortment of teas/juices/flavored water, and European and Asian chocolates and candies. read more

This would have been a five-star review, and usually I love this place, but when I bit into my club sandwich today it was missing bacon. Since the inclusion of bacon was the entire reason I ordered this sandwich, this made me very sad. Unfortunately I didn't have time to go back and ask them to fix the situation and ate my bacon-less sandwich in a cloud of despair. At least the toasted bread was nice and crispy. And the deli meat portions are nice and generous here. It's just that when you have your heart set on bacon.... read more

I was really excited to try out this place. I've been trying new places in DC since I'm new to the area. The staff is extremely nice. As soon as you walk in you're greeted. I ordered a chicken sandwich with fries. Unfortunately the chicken felt like it definitely needed more cooking.. I think it might've been because I went during a rush time. I ended up just eating my fries with their spicy Mayo on the side. Those were really good. read more

Cons/Warning first: Make sure you keep track of the cost! They sometimes overcharge! They have also given me rotten marinara sauce for my mozzarella sticks, watch out for that But otherwise- the sandwiches are always good here, no matter what I get. Smothered in mayo tho, fyi I get the st asaph - with artichoke hearts, avocado, turkey, among other things- its alwayssss delicious. Tuna melt is a rip off- tell them to put it n toasted rye with tomatoes if you want it to be good Heard good things about the new york something, cowboy is GREAT and so it the steak and cheese (or chicken and cheese f you want) The balsamic vinaigrette, tomato, and mozzarella is NOT good or worth the $$ so dont bother Those fries are perfect when you are craving greasey - double fried to perfection read more
