We had limited time prior to heading to the airport, and this cafe was also in proximity to our hotel. Two good reasons to try a place, but what sold us was the high Yelp rating. The cafe is perfect for grab and go but also has roughly dozen seats available if you prefer to dine in. There's two ordering areas, breakfast and lunch with both having plethora of choices. The service was great with the owner at the registers greeting everyone by name that walked in, supposedly recurring patrons. If I lived or worked in the area I would become one of them. The Tuscano specialty sandwich is quite delicious, especially the baguette version I had. It has sliced chicken breast, provolone cheese, field greens, tomatoes, red onion, balsamic vinaigrette and pesto mayo. Yummy! I always say, the bread is the driving force behind an exquisite sandwich. The daily soup was also delicious and quite large. I'm visiting the DC area on vacation and stopped here for a quick lunch. We arrived around 2:45 PM, just before their 3:00 PM closing time. The person who appeared to be the owner or manager still allowed us to order, which we appreciated--but never mentioned that dine-in was no longer allowed. After we paid (about $18 for a panini and chips) and had already started eating, kept saying they're closed and if they stay open the landlord will terminate their lease. The way it was handled felt rude and uncomfortable, especially since this wasn't communicated upfront. If we had known, we would have taken the food to go or chosen somewhere else. I completely understand closing procedures, but basic communication goes a long way. I have been a loyal customer at City Place Cafe for over 8 years and it's just as good now as it was when I first visited. I have gotten a variety of items over the years for lunch and breakfast and everything is always so good. Some favorites are: the napoli panini, the Italian panini, the rustic sandwich, San Franciscan, and the buffalo chicken wrap. Their breakfast sandwiches are also very tasty. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You order at one desk and pay at the front, and can select any drinks or chips to go along with your meal. They also have a decent amount of outdoor seating, and there are also stools inside. read more

It's always a good sign when locals are going in and don't need to order. I ordered a coffee and the Za'atar Avocado Toast. Coffee was good, made with Lavazza beans and the Za'ater Avocado toast was delicious and also inexpensive. We loved this little sandwich shop so much we went back for a second time on our week-long trip to DC. It was my last day in DC after a 18 month stint project. I took a Project Manager here for a late breakfast and it was generally quite exceptional. We both ordered omelets with sausage and apparently they had 5 different kinds of slighted bread options (toasted with butter). Had I known, I woulda gone for that seeded rye! This is great for a quick lunch. It got very busy about 12:45 on a Wednesday but they seemed to move very quickly. The setup was a little confusing because you go to the back to order and they give you a ticket then you go to the register in the middle of the store to pay. But the cashier was very helpful and offered assistance when I was lost. I ordered the Mediterranean bowl and my name was called pretty quickly. The bowl was delicious and very filling. Worst experience ever. Disrespectful attitude toward Asian customers. We arrived early in the morning when there were almost no other customers. As we were taking a moment to look at the menu, the cashier rudely told us to move aside if we weren't ready to order--despite there being no line behind us. After we placed our order and sat down, the same cashier came over again and told us we couldn't sit there because the chair was too close to the coffee machine. That made no sense--the chair was clearly placed at a customer table and was not obstructing anything. If you don't want customers to sit there, don't put tables and chairs in that area! This place honestly doesn't need to spend a cent on marketing -- their friendly but speedy service, delicious food, and consistent quality have made enough promoters that word of City Place Cafe can travel naturally across any Golden Triangle office. One of my coworkers has a deep-rooted love for this place -- she's honestly one of the strongest enthusiasts for a fast-casual lunch spot that I've ever met -- and, after paying them a visit myself, I can 100% see why. The owner is remarkably kind and has such an impressive memory -- if you're a regular, he'll most likely recognize you and be super happy to welcome you back. Sometimes he'll even be able to pick you out from a crowd even if it's only been your second or third time visiting, which is honestly shocking considering how insanely busy this spot can get during the weekday lunch rush. Each interaction is also so short, considering how efficient they are at churning out orders. City Place offers all the classic cafe and deli favorites, with sandwiches, wraps, and salads, as well as a rotating selection of soups and chilis of the day that they post on their Facebook page (honestly one of the few reasons I have to keep my Facebook account active). I admit that I'm not the world's biggest fan of sandwiches, so my eyes are usually drawn straight to the two bowls they have, tucked away in the bottom left corner of their menu. Their hippie bowl is genuinely one of the best salads / grain bowls / whatever that I've ever had in my life -- it's loaded up with all of the best salad toppings to give the bowl the perfect harmony of flavors, textures, temperatures...it's truly the gold standard of bowls, and it's even vegan too! It comes with a base of kale and shredded brussels sprouts, which gives the salad a great heartiness and serves the perfect vehicle for their flavor-packed, rich lemon tahini dressing. The roasted red beets and sweet potatoes are slightly warm and add a wonderful, comforting earthiness to the bowl, alongside their quinoa. For a bit of crunch, they've also included chickpeas that are toasted to a perfect golden brown, as well as roasted sunflower seeds. The fresh avocado adds a great creaminess to the bowl, and the golden raisins provide little pops of sweetness to break up the otherwise very savory salad. It's a classic bowl -- none of the ingredients are surprising or ultra unique, but everything is super fresh, executed to perfection, and sings in perfect harmony together. They run the place very efficiently- best to come with some who had been there before or just follow what other folks are doing and be ready to order quick otherwise you will be in the way, It kind of reminds me of the soup place from Seinfeld without being jerks about it. Seating is very limited to a few tables and a counter area- most people take to go. I went with the Havana panini, which was a version of a cubano and actually quite good. The staff was friendly and service was efficiently fast. The food was freshly cooked to order, piping hot and delicious. The place was clean and comfortable. The prices were reasonable. Handmade soup. I never had lentil curry soup before and it was really good and really feeling. The Panini was excellent as well. The menu offers vegetarian options as well as substitutions. The first day I ordered just a bagel with egg and cheese, along with a double shot espresso ( they serve Lavazza here, so it was great!). The serving was extremely generous for a bagel and ended up being pretty filling! My colleagues ordered the daily special on a bagel: 3 eggs, avocado and bacon. It was huge, extremely flavorful, and they absolutely finished the whole thing! Some of them even ordered a second one! The second day I ordered the daily special as well but had them substitute the bacon for mushrooms, it was exceptionally delicious! I have been visiting this location for lunch for several years now. This business is guaranteed my business at least every third workday. The Harvest salad, while pricy, is a low-carb veggie dream. The sandwiches and paninis are second to none. I also enjoy the value-prices beef chili in the winter months.
