Had a terrific traditional Italian sub here recently. Prego lists it as "famous Italian cold cut". Okay, that's their prerogative. Prego also offers "jumbo famous Italian cold cut". Jumbo means more toppings come with it. Capisce?! I've also enjoyed their grilled pannini selections and can attest to the tastiness of the smoked turkey panini. Staff is responsive; sammies are made right in front of you. It's somewhat easy to miss this place. From the outside, the deli appears to be rather narrow, but it's pretty deep inside. Now that I've returned here numerous times over the past year, I think it's worth updating my review. After ordering the Italian Cold Cut here numerous times, it's become perhaps my favorite sub in the city. Although I rarely crave it, when I do it hits the spot and is perfection. In terms of what really makes it stand out, I've come to the conclusion that it's really the fresh, soft sub rolls that they use that help to make their subs utterly delicious. Additionally, the meat to bread ratio is just the way I like it which has become more clear to me after ordering subs elsewhere with a ratio that can be sometimes out of control. Overall, Prego has really grown on me and will continue to visit whenever the craving hits! read more

Repeat customer over the last couple of years. They have outstanding customer service and are always quick with their orders, including those ordered online. My favorite sandwiches, in which they don't spare adding the protein, include the Club Sandwich, Steak & Cheese, and the Chicken Parmigiana. All a great value. I've been a regular at Prego the past 25 years. I worked at a Chiropractor's office next door and was blessed to have their tuna and Italian subs for lunch at least 3 times a week! While attending a business meeting in the bowels of DC, I had the opportunity to order a quick lunch to go from Prego Deli. I chose the grilled cheese panini with a large iced tea. Simple, easy. And when it arrived, I was surprised at how much gooey cheese was in the sandwich. And the best thing about it, there were grill marks on the bread with a nice taste of char. A unique grilled cheese for sure. Best of all, the large iced tea wasn't just large, it was officially "big-assed"! These folks knew exactly what I needed! Wanted something slight but filling and this place definitely had exactly that. Menu is extensive with breakfast, lunch and dinner if you like. Walking it was clean and friendly. The sandwich I got was a chicken pesto panini, the bread used for the panini absolutely amazing ! Tasted freshly baked and as If I was eating a pizza with perfect crust and grill marks. The problem i had with the sandwich was that the pesto wasn't really present as I really looked forward to that the most and the chicken although a good portion was dry and kind of bland. I loved the fresh ingredients which clearly shines threw through taste and sight but I would love to try other menu items as they serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches and having a sandwich that's flavorful and filling with a good price point is my kind of place. Will be coming back and maybe ask for more pesto next time but also try the other options available. read more

While I can only speak to my delivered sandwich, I can attest that they make a tasty, albeit non-traditional, Cuban that is easily 2 meals in one order. I added hot peppers which was a nice addition in order to balance out some of the saltiness from the pork and ham. My only complaint would be the bread that sandwich came on. It was much more like a hoagie roll so it would have been nice to be pressed just like a traditional Cuban. Otherwise, though, I enjoyed the sandwich (which was well-kept in it's package, hot, and not soggy) and would happily order from here again when I'm in the workplace. read more

Timing is important for these things and on this cold day we were greeted by the cheesiest, crispiest, most magnificent breakfast sandwiches ever. Located in such cute little area of the city. It was such a nice day out and I walked all the way here. So many people were out or working at the coffee shops near by; it was lovely. They made my sandwich super fast. I walked in and told them what I wanted and they got right to work. The only other people in the store were school kids who had gotten off the bus and were getting an after school snack. I built my own sandwich. The bread was fresh and all the veggies were too. I don't get any meat on my sandwich, and sometimes that makes for a sad sandwich at other places. Not here! They had a good amount of cheese and loaded the veggies on. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had. The only thing to note is I did get vinegar on my sandwich and during my 10 minute walk back home the bread got slightly soggy. That's obviously not Prego's fault. That's the nature of putting a liquid on bread. But if that does bother you maybe eat it there! Each time I come to D.C. I'll definitely be grabbing a lunch from here. read more

I go to Prego about once a year and always think I need to go more often until my visit here today. There are always people in the store getting their sandwiches and some of them are good (like the #4). However, today I ordered the Spicy Chicken panini and some of the chicken I could not chew because the skin was still on the chicken and was too much like rubber. Meat already grosses me out and this put me over the edge. It will be a LONG time until I can go back here as much as I want to support a local Capitol Hill deli shop. read more

If the words on the sign are not taken literally then you will not be disappointed because Italian delicatessen is a bit of a reach. Example, I saw Stoffers in the freezer section and Classico sauce in a jar. That said the service, price point, and solid sandwiches won me over for a "need a quick, under $10, lunch" type situation when I don't wanna battled the crowds ate the Eastern Market. read more

OMG!! This is my first time ordering from here. I have been craving for a corned beef sandwich for about a week. Not to many places in this area know much about corned beef. Prego deli lays out an excellent Italian sub. The jumbo Italian sub rings up around $7 and it's money well spent. When they call it jumbo I expect them to jack the price up but they don't. Jumbo size at an average price, now that's value. It's fully loaded with Mortadella, Bologna, Genoa Salami, Capicolla, Provolone Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Hot pepper, Oil & Vinegar, Prosciutto, Pepperoni, green Olives, and Sweet Peppers. The cuts of meat are well sliced and have a good thickness. Lots of awesome fully loaded deli meats! The green olives are a nice salty touch I don't see very often on Italian subs. The caramelized onions were weird (I ended up taking them off) and the bread was lackluster. It was very similar the turkey and Brie at Cosi-- only not as good. They go overboard on stuffing as much as they can into the sandwich though, which is a good thing, until your sandwich completely falls apart when you pick it up. Prego is a small deli located in Capitol Hill. While it seems to market itself as an Italian deli, that is a stretch. It is a bit too random. The owner, whose name seems to be Mr. Kim, is very warm and pleasant when you walk into the store and deli counter. We ordered a Turkey Bacon Panini, Italian, and Veal Parm to go. The sandwiches travelled well and stayed warm all of the way back to Brookland. At the end of the day, there is nothing special about the subs here, but the meats are good quality. The sauce on the veal was very bland, and the condiments also very mild. If you just need a quick sub that is better than a fast food version, this is a good place. read more

I have been coming here for breakfast sandwiches for the past 2.5 years, most recently this morning with my dad. I will say this Deli has consistently made fantastic breakfast sandwiches and they seem to just keep getting better and better! I will also say the owner is super warm & friendly- great customer service. I typically get the egg & cheese on an everything bagel with spinach and tomato added. My go-to spot for lunch sandwiches. I have yet to find an over the counter BLT that stands up to Prego's; especially for $5.00! The egg salad- really delicious but messy to eat. The steak and cheese- good but not great. also messy to eat. The tuna salad- too flavor-safe for my liking. Most would be content with it. When you think about an Italian Deli, you think about A Litteri's and - possibly - Taylor's Deli. The idea is to have great slices of cured meat (ideally imported) and a small selection of hard to find imported food items (pasta, sauces, etc.). Sadly, Prego falls short on both characteristics. First, the pre-sliced sandwich meat is probably from Costco. Unlike "real" Italian deli's, Prego doesn't even display the slabs of meat. Second, the store is hardly an Italian market. It's stocked with ice cream, chips, and junk food. Sure, there are a few cans of tomato sauce and boxes of pasta but you could find them just as easily at the 14th Safeway. We've been going here pretty consistently for their breakfast sandwiches on weekends. Prego's a decent place. They have a grocery type pasta section of noodles and sauces towards the back of the store and also have a deli counter up front. The only stuff I've gotten from the deli counter have been sandwiches which were average. The best part of this place (for me anyway) is that they sell sweet tea! This place is nice if you're shopping at Eastern Market and want somewhere quieter to eat than the lunch counter but this isn't the sort of place you'd come out of your way for. read more

For one they had on sale Panera Bread balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing for $5.49. Then right beside that, they offered Organicville gluten free dressings. I don't know -- it was just really random what they had on their shelves for sale. Some of them were gathering dust. This is a small space with limited table seating, so I was literally sitting next to the salad dressing within arm reach of me. My sandwich I got is a huge portion with all varying pricings from $5-$6.50. Soup was varying pricing too depending on what size you got and what kind it was. I settled up with the tomato basil. I can't say I enjoyed the after taste of that soup.... sandwich I got was ok and had a lot of deli meat on it. Overall thought of the place -- come in here if you want a sandwich or a quick drink to go. It isn't fantastic, and it is far from anything special.
