I've walked past Tunicliff's Tavern about a thousand times and decided to come in with a friend for lunch the other day. The inside decor is themed like a tavern with a dose of classic American paintings and furniture. I ordered the breakfast burger, which comes with L&T and a sunny-side up egg (sunny-side up is not my ministry, but I went with it), cooked medium well. It was cooked properly and, while a tad on the dry side, was fine. The fries were typical fries. My friend had the breakfast burrito, which he thought was fine. Service was also OK. This is my first review for Tunnicliff's, even though I thought I sung their praises in the past on here. I have been a customer for YEEEEEARS and while there were some quarantine/pandemic-related setbacks/delays, today was the first day I was over it. I do not eat beef/pork, so I was drawn to Tunnicliff's back in the day because they have always made a turkey burger from ground meat. Today, I had a patty. A frozen patty. Not thrilled at all. The food still hit the spot because I was hungry and I understand the economy is karate chopping businesses, but I want the original turkey burger back! read more

It was a beautiful morning in Washington DC and a few Yelper friends and I sat outside and enjoyed a nice breakfast here in DC. The location was the DC's Eastern Market and the crowd I was with was Yelp Elites from Bellingham and Spokane, Washington. Columbia, SC and myself. Tough crowd we are. But this place did an okay job, but it was not amazing like I had wanted it to be. They offer $5 Bloody Mary's and they were good but not the best. The worst part of this place is the service. They are slow! We first started inside because we did not know if we just wanted a drink. Then we moved outside after a while. When we asked if we could be moved outside. We got an awful rude response from the hostess. We had already settled up at the bar and were ready to go outside, but wow, Rude people are just bad. When we got outside we waited to take our order, and waited, and waited some more. Finally our server came by. I ordered the breakfast burrito and the ladies I was with got a breakfast pizza. The burrito was okay at best. Their pizza was a disgrace. It was just a normal pizza with 2 sunny side eggs on it. Overall this was a nice place to sit outside, but that was about it. Strolled in after the street market since they had a sign outside for $5 Bloody Mary's. They offer indoor and outdoor covered seating during coivd. The outdoor seating is covered and almost like an extension of inside. They do have heaters offered for outside seated guests. We did not need to make a reservation there was plenty of room inside we were there around 1 pm on a Saturday. They have no options for vegans here except for fries so my mom and I ordered that. My veg boyfriend ordered a pizza. Their Bloody Mary's are premixed so they were not able to make them vegan since it included Worcestershire sauce. Overall was a good experience. read more

My office is next door to this spot but I've never checked it out until today. Soon as I set foot on their side of the sidewalk, the server told me I could not bring in the acai bowl that I bought at the farmers market going on right in front of them. I explained that I would be ordering food for two other people as well and that the bowl was almost done amd that I would sit outside by the people walking the market. She nodded and told me she would seat me. Immediately after she went inside, a woman in her senior age was loud and told me the same thing about my farmers market treat. I was almost done with the bowl and at that point was just waiting for my orders to be taken. Within 1 minute after the bidder sounding woman left, the busboy comes out and tells me the same thing very loud embarrassing me amongst other patrons. At that point I decided to leave and go across the street inside and spend my funds at the delicious crab cake stand. From other recent reviews looks like I wasn't going to miss much in terms of elevated eats. We had such an amazing experience here! We were visiting from Florida but were staying close to this location. my daughter (8) loved it so much that we ended up going there 3 times our whole trip! (she is very picky FYI) The staff was amazing and we even had the same waiter two of the three times. He was one of the best servers we've ever had and we are so grateful for his suggestions and patience. Definitely recommend this place for kids or just a night/day out! read more

Was recommended this place by a fellow elite yelper, and one hell of a model American. Reviews seemed meh but I've never been one to shy away from a place based on reviews. I called ahead Bc the stiffs I traveled with are totally frozen in the city. There was no need for reservations so we used an Uber and headed over. When you walk in the bar is upfront. No real hostess station so I grabbed three menus and we sat down. First glance at menu the prices are on the higher end for what the food is- but we pressed on. There are a good amount of seats and tables in the back - which is where we sat and put out the vibe. Ordered a spinach and artichoke dip for an app to share- large bowl of it with flat bread points to dip. Overall it was tasty. The dip was well mixed and there wasn't any big chunks of artichoke to negotiate. Solid. For a meal I was between the fish and chips and the meatloaf. Opted for the fish and ordered a water. Seems like the beer prices are a little high but being from PGH who knows. Fish and chips were good- the batter didn't really stick to the fish that much and the batter in places was very soggy. Let them babies fry a little longer next time. Fries were good and the cole slaw was a spicy mayo version that came in a little cup. Overall I think it was a good meal. I would return. read more

Tunnicliff's Tavern is an escape from DC right in Eastern Market. Close to a few of DC's best restaurants and bars, Tunnicliff's Tavern is more of a dark, dive bar attracting the outliers of DC. In the evenings, the bar is filled with rougher men wanting a cheap beer. Despite this, there is table seating and they even have a kids menu so you can bring your kids/baby. They have a superb draft beer list and even have a cider on tap for just over $6 per glass. My wife and I ordered the Texas Burger and it was just okay. Not amazing, but decent. The service is really slow and not friendly. Expect to order at the bar. It's faster and don't think you'll get a smile with your check. read more

I know this place isn't fancy, but I give it 5-stars based on my own personal experience. I got to my DC hotel at 9:30 PM, and then I went to two highly-rated nearby restaurants around 10:00 PM. The first one had just closed, whereas the second already turned off their grill. The hostesses at BOTH of these restaurants strongly recommended that I go to Tunnicliff's Tavern and order the chicken wings. With a reputation like that, I couldn't turn down the suggestion. And they were right! I got to Tunnicliff's Tavern at around 10:40, was immediately seated by a polite waitress, and given buffalo wings around 15 minutes later. They were hot, satisfying, and - most importantly at the time - able to be served after 10:00 PM. I will certainly return to Tunnicliff's Tavern during my future late-night business trips! read more

Tunnicliffs is just the best. I have eaten there hundreds of times over many years and have never had a bad meal. Favorites are the Tunnicliffs pizza which is a white pizza with garlic, bacon, goat cheese and red peppers. The burgers and sandwiches are terrific. French onion soup is beyond amazing. Also the mashed potatoes are homemade and ridiculously good. The wings are legendary and practically a food group. But it is the staff that is Tunnicliffs truest asset! Oscar, Krista, Steph, Anthony, Mike and everyone else provides the best customer service! I use a wheelchair to get around, and the staff goes out of there to accommodate me moving chairs and tables as needed. You would think this would be typical at any place for someone in a wheelchair. That is simply not the case. Tunnicliffs excels in customer service! There is a covered tent with heaters/fans/ removable walls as the weather dictates. I've totally been on a weekend brunching kick lately, and I had the fortune of joining some lovely friends for an early* bite to eat at Tunnicliff's this past Sunday. It was miserable, cold, dreary, and wet out and I'd arrived at the Eastern Market Metro a good half hour ahead of our 1000 meeting time, so I briefly wandered Eastern Market before heading across the street to Tunnicliff's. I'm not sure if it was because of the weather or if it's a regular setup, but they have a tarpaulined enclosure just outside their door with seating for maybe 20 people with mounted heaters to ward away the chill. I think I would have enjoyed dining out here, listening to the rain patter off the tarps, but there were number of smokers, which I wasn't so thrilled about. Like many other Yelpers have indicated, the crab omelet is absolutely the way to go here. It's gigantic and could readily feed two not-so-hungry people, or one starving person (say, me). The egg was fluffy, the crab meat was large and chunky, the Hollandaise was creamy, and the cheese was -just- melting. I couldn't ask for a better way to have a late breakfast! I downed a couple cups of coffee, but some of my dining companions got an early start to the day with various beers on tap. It is a tavern, after all. My one beef was that service was noticeably sparse. I don't know where our server would wander off to, or if she was also working a number of tables up front, but she was barely around at all. Definitely plan for an easy hour-and-a-half to two-hour brunch here. Either the kitchen is absolutely tiny and can't handle the throngs of people, or the servers are off taking naps. Good thing the food here was superb... Conveniently, one can wander around and explore Eastern Market after a totally satisfying meal at Tunnicliff's to burn off some of the calories, too! *You won't want to arrive any later than 1030 on a Sunday. Strolling around the Eastern Market on a lovely summer afternoon is one of my favorite things to do in DC. Only doing so builds up quite an appetite and walking by the various food stands never helps the hunger pangs, so my first time here it was off to Tunnicliff's we went. A multi-floored Irish bar packed with people was already a good sign, even it if meant the wait was to be a little long. Though the outside tables were perfect for people watching, the humid weather forced us to get a table inside near the bar. The place was hoppin - groups upon groups of semi-drunkards were wolfing down heaps of brunch grub, with all of the fixins any comfort foodie would want. After waiting for a good bit, the food finally arrived. What was presented was a good sampling of some of the best brunch variety on the menu: the infamous crab cake benedicts, breakfast burrito, potato and cheese stuffed omelette, and breakfast sandwich. For the most part, everything was decent but hardly impressionable for the experienced bruncher. The breakfast burrito was a tad on the small side, the stuffed omelette was hearty, but the crab cake benedict stole the show. They were moist, flavorful, and delicious. It will be my go-to dish for all future visits. What was off about the place was the service. Long waits were endured for drink refills, food orders, and check requests, even after a semi-long wait to get seated. They certainly weren't the friendly bunch of wait staff, presumably too busy considering this was the ever-popular weekend brunch service. Since locals swear by this place, I'd probably give this place a shot again down the line - be it for brunch or as a neighborhood bar. But the next time, I'll spend a little more time in the market. read more

This is a bar in Eastern Market with great food. I have been going there for several years now and have never had a bad experience. It is open early for brunch on the weekends (very good) and for dinner (excellent). Their cheeseburgers cannot be beat. Their Reubens are a close second. For breakfast/brunch, they have omelettes; eggs benedict. It is not much to look at from the front, but it is very nice inside. On the waitstaff - they are unusually nice for DC. Tunnicliff's has the food quality of Old Ebbitt but with nicer waitstaff. read more

Honestly it was an okay experience. It was a Saturday morning when we came and they did have $5 bloody mary's. Although mine was almost too spicy to drink and the celery was rotten, it is a good deal for a bloody mary for sure. I thought that the hostess was a little less pleasant, not very enjoyable. We were seated inside at first and then moved out to the patio where the people watching was on point. There was a nice breeze and the hustle and bustle was quite interesting to watch, right by the market. Our service was slow, I am not sure if it was because they were busy or if our server was overwhelmed but we did take some time to order too. We had shared the breakfast pizza and I was a little underimpressed. The description included bacon, sausage, marinara, cheese and an egg. We were a large, international group. The restaurant were expecting us and had a perfect table for the group. The waiter and everyone else was just terrific about taking orders and figuring out what food went to whom in a group which was not paying much attention! Warning: this is a racist establishment. I went here after a wedding at Eastern Market. Staff was extremely rude and threatened the only person of color in our party for eating a outside pizza inside We were never even shown a menu and didn't know they served food. Multiple people of party were eating leftover pizza from the wedding we attended, but they only targeted one person of party for being a "smart ass" even though we were willing to comply once informed of their policies. I was rudely bullied here. I've lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. Haven't been in for a while, but I popped in to grab a drink on my way back from getting a sandwich. The waiter objected when they saw me eating my sandwich on the patio. I said politely no problem, why don't I just pay and leave. I was hungrier than thirsty. I took one more bite while wrapping up and responded to a nice lady talking to me in the table next to mine. The manager rushed out to rudely scream at me. Nothing nice in his tone. No request. Just rude screaming about how I took another bite and needed to leave. It's very sad that they feel the need to scream at patrons, especially when it's a neighborhood place you've been patronizing for a while and you've been nothing but polite to them. read more

Tunnicliff's is one of my favorite DC spots. Whether I'm grabbing brunch with friends, going to drinks with a big group of coworkers or grabbing a low key Sunday night dinner, this is my go-to spot. It is your classic bar food, but it is consistently flavorful, hot and plentiful. I suggest the cheesesteak and always getting tots as a side! I came to Tunnicliff's for a wedding afterparty in December. I don't have the most detailed memory of the place, to be honest, but I enjoyed our visit. We got very drunk with friends, which was nice; we all needed that. The space was simple and cozy, about the atmosphere you'd expect of a self-proclaimed tavern (but of the older tavern variety, rather than the trendy fancy New American variety). There were several tables, and we claimed one eventually, though I clashed with a terrible woman in the process. It was the coldest weekend of the year, and I was visibly sick in addition to being a bit tipsy (the very drunk came later), and I sat down at a stool at what I thought was a communal table. One of the women at the table straight up yelled at me like I was a child. I hope someone spits in her drink sometime. The beer list was pretty good, though heavy on California beers so nothing I can't get at home. I think I had like Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPAs all night, but I can't be sure. I had a good time at Tunnicliff's, despite the near bar fight and finding out that one of my old classmates wrote in Paul Ryan for president but is glad Trump won because he stuck it to the liberals (I want to follow up on this so bad). I work in this area as beauty stylist and have had my share of disrespect dealing with these white people.. but to come into a restaurant and sit at the bar right in front of the bartender and watch him walk from one end of the bar to the other and not even acknowledge my presence was the worst..I been here plenty of times with family and friends and the waiters gave customers service but for the gentleman at 1pm to be running the show on his own just show a major line of disrespect when there's only a handful of people in the restaurant.. read more
