This is definitely one of my favorite bars in DC. I like it because it has great beer on about 6-12 taps, and I like just about every food item on the menu. The televisions are great, too. This is one of the bars in DC where everyone is friendly. It's easy to show up and just hang out, whether you are with a group or by yourself. It's also a great place to work because they have free wifi. In the afternoons it's pretty common to see guys come in and open up their laptop to crank on some work while slowly drinking some beer and eating fries. Well, at least that's what I do...and I'm not alone! Tunnies has a great local following, a solid group of regulars. Parking is on the street or wherever you can find it. But it's pretty easy to park nearby on weeknights. read more

Good fallback spot to grab lunch when you're out shopping Eastern Market! I keep trying to go other places and then fruitlessly ending up back at Tunnicliff's because it doesn't have a wait. Not that it's empty, but it's a pretty big place and there's always a table somewhere. It's average in a lot of ways and not very interesting or exciting, but the food's good enough (brunch stuff, burgers, etc.), the beer selection's more interesting than you'd think, and other restaurants nearby have long lines when the market's hopping. The most notable thing here is definitely the peanut butter and jelly pizza, which is just what it sounds like - peanut butter and jelly served on a round pizza crust with a sprinkling of mozzarella. It's hot, and weird - better as a novelty than as a meal. I definitely prefer my old standby, the bacon cheeseburger! Not only does it have bacon on it (win!), the bacon is actually crispy (double win!). No thrills here, but not a bad spot to have in your back pocket. read more

Well I finally sated my craving for Tunnicliff's Tavern's "infamous" crab omelet this past Sunday. It was every bit as good as all the other reviewers mentioned. It definitely was choc-o-bloc full of chunks of succulent white crab meat. So it should be for $12.00 (and two bucks extra for toast). I'm not sure if mine had the hollandaise sauce, unless it was inside the omelet. I did not eat every bite, but I made sure to find every last piece of crab! My friend had the Farmer's omelet which her colleague who lives on the Hill highly recommended. It contained mash potatoes, melted cheddar, bacon and sour cream (Her toast was included). It was $10 and I think she'd recommend it to non-crab lovers. Service was top-notch, or if I may, mimic our server and call it "brilliant". He checked in on us frequently, even though business was not quite bustling at the time. Do what we did and arrive when they open at 10:00am. The place was starting to fill up as we left to stroll the Market right outside the front door. This is a great place to dine if you're planning to shop around at Eastern Market, however if you are a serious antique shopper you may want to do the market first. Thursday night was my first time dining at this establishment in the capital hill area. My partner and I came in for late night food and immediately we felt like outsiders. The pm bartender was alittle rude when we first came in from start to finish. I asked for a soft drink he rolled his eyes because im assuming soft drinks are frowned upon at the bar but when ordering our drinks my partner wasnt even able to tell him her drink he just bought me 2 cokes and it wasnt what she wanted but shes not confrontational so she drank it. When it came time to take our food order he tended to the entire bar including the server coming back and forth for drinks and THEN took our order. As time went on and the food arrived he didn't ask if everything was alright with the food or if anything was needed with our meals just continued to work the bar around us. We did not receive refills on our drinks and mine had been empty before i had finished eating. Because of the neglect my partner had to yell to get his attention for a ranch cup and even then still didnt even acknowledge that he heard her just came and slid it on the bar. The only time he checked on us was the end and the question wasnt "are you guys ready for your check" it was "you done?" I would hate to pull this card but being only 1 of 2 black couples in there I felt VERY VERY uncomfortable watching as all the other patrons around me were being serviced properly . The food however was great! I haven't had a fulfilling burger in a while and it was perfect just wish I had great service as a side order instead of fries. I will be speaking to management to see if theres a way this can be corrected so until then... p.s. i have neverrr downloaded yelp and Ive definitely had some experiences but THIS situation was definitely post worthy. read more

I was elated yesterday when Kevin L. contacted me yesterday to share that he was in town from NYC, and would I like to grab lunch. Yes! Since it was too short of notice for Tabard Inn or Blue Duck Tavern (still have yet to try), we came here, upon KL's previous recollection of the crab omelette. Not to mention its great Eastern Market location, and to a part of the city which I had yet to visit since moving back. (I try to avoid the debacles and shenanigans of Capitol Hill - fiscal cliff??? debt ceiling??? sequestration??? drones??? Due Process??? Curveball??? Epic fails of incompetence and a lack of accountability.) Politics aside... Tunnicliff's reminded me a lot of East Side West in San Francisco's Marina district: http://www.yelp.com/biz/eastside-west-restaurant-and-bar-san-francisco-2. Very similar ambiance. Food selection at both looked just enough appetizing to find two or three items of interest, but not enough so that I'd add them to my favorites list. Not to mention the fact that the thing East Side West has going for it is its Bloody Mary's. Though I did not try one today, the presentation of them here did not look nearly as appealing. That's one point for East Side West. But this is not a competition, just a reminder of a memory triggered... The crab omelette was good - I got a few bites of shells. Maybe that's normal for a crab omelette? This was my first. Not sure the origin of the crab - yes, I considered if it was from the Gulf, and hoped it did not have three eyes. It had a sort of weird cheese sauce on top, which I think was actually orange hollandaise. The home fries were not too my liking - too oily and over-cooked. And our server seemed uninterested in us once it was clear we weren't ordering drinks (i.e. revenue enhancers). Meh. I've had better brunch in both San Francisco and New York. read more

Service was good, brunch food was good, atmosphere was good. If the weather had been nicer, it would have been a great place to sit and people watch at Eastern Market. In fact, there were actually people sitting outside under their awning with heat lamps, but they were still shivering. If you join their mailing list online I hear you can get a coupon for free dessert. I felt the menu was a bit limited in terms of brunch items, but coming from a Midwestern background, there may be staples I'm used to that just aren't usual on the East Coast (like hash browns and waffles). For students, it's expensive in a standard way, (only been for brunch thus far), but a nice place to splurge with friends. I got the farmer's omelette with mashed potatoes and bacon in it, and although surprised with the combination, it was very good. We ordered the chocolate cake dessert, and one would have been enough to feed a family of five, so you've been warned that the portions are generous. Too many times I have gone here for lunch only to have a similar experience to what I had today. My patience with Tunnicliff Tavern has now ended. I shouldn't have to plead to the hostess for a lunch menu just because I don't feel like eating eggs. I wanted a salad. How difficult is that? I don't need the hostess to give me a sigh, eye rolling, and a lousy attitude. I don't need awful service. All of this isn't worth the mediocre food. We headed there for brunch on Saturday. There aren't many options for brunch near Eastern Market that can seat 8 or so people in a group. The brunch menu was pretty standard. Eggs benedict, western omelette, eggs chesapeake (benedict with crab instead of Canadian bacon), etc. It was decent, nothing spectacular. By far the most memorable dish was the mac n cheese. I think it was gouda? It came in a little cast iron loaf pan with a piece of cornbread. Simply delicious, and the orecchiette was cooked perfectly, but a little more liquidy than I like my mac n cheese. The prices are reasonable, the food is good pub food; their burgers are consistently pretty good and I really enjoy the buffalo chicken sandwich. The black and blue burger is particularly good, when it comes to burgers. My roommate organized a happy hour/fundraiser here. Everyone who donated got to enjoy an extended happy hour menu with food. We were allowed to take over any tables we wanted or just stand by the bar... That is until a waitress with a nasty attitude told me I couldn't stand at the end of bar. She didn't give me a reason at all, just shooed me away to the other side of the bar. At first, I assumed I was in her way somehow, but over time more members of our group gravitated to that exact same spot but she didn't say anything to them! As the evening went on, some of us ordered dinner. When my soup came out, I saw it was served by the unfriendly waitress and I prayed she didn't spit in my food. I asked her to set it down at a table and thanked her to which she replied with just "Uh-huh." Um, I don't always expect service with a smile, but I do appreciate manners. Good thing I'm not obligated to leave you a tip, honey. I have NO idea what I did to offend this waitress but aside from this one person, everyone else was great, especially the bartender who was a pro at juggling the busy Tuesday night crowd. This durable tavern has been a presence on Cap Hill since forever. About 2 years back, it changed the colors of its interior so that it's less dark, but other than that, I find it to be the same joint I walked into 2 decades ago. The regulars are very much entrenched here; am not one of them, but I (or anyone else) can still have a good time. As for the food? Well, it's just alright. Their Happy Hour has no food specials (at least I've never experienced it). The bar is full service and offers a wide selection of drinks as well as decently reduced prices for HH. The best thing about Tunnicliff's is the staff. They treat you like family. This is why folks return again and again. I am always made to feel like a VIP here, and stop in only occasionally per year. It's often been stated ad nauseam in reviews that some watering hole is a "Cheers" bar. While I hate to employ such a hackneyed comparison yet again, must admit that if forced to name just one place in all of the DMV that is like the well-beloved TV show, I'd say Tunnicliff's wins hands down. read more

My new bar I'll go there after i drive uber all night. Kitchen stays open late and drinks are solid and not too expensive. The manager (Scott) is an authentic DC guy from the 90's...if you have been in DC since the 90's you AUTOMATICALLY get points in my book! I'll definitely keep coming here. If you're a police officer, your opinion of this place would likely vary from mine - it seems to be a hang-out for off-duty cops. I had a couple Widmers and some appetizers (wings, quesadillas, and calamari split among the table) here, but rather than tasting those, I just couldn't dodge a strong smell of old dishwashing detergent, and it ruined the experience. That's a pity, because there's potential. The location seemed good (near Eastern Market), and there were beautiful televisions around the place - they even had Wii, which people were enjoying. The music was cheesy, but that's easily overlooked. Service was par, but mostly, I really couldn't get over the smell as I was trying to eat. Hopefully that was an exception, and not the norm. Decent food. The server couldn't have been less friendly if she tried. Two of us had planned to share two entrees, so they did split both between the two of us, which they didn't have to do nor did we ask... Though they probably charged us anyway to do it though, even though we weren't technically splitting a single meal even. They too were still only serving brunch in the afternoon on a Saturday... wtf... luckily their brunch menu included sandwiches and burgers at the end. I had a cheeseburger with bacon, and a greek salad... the greek salad was "ehh" in my book... OK, not great, not bad. The cheeseburger I really liked... on a nice egg washed bun. I nearly ordered the peanut butter and jelly pizza (with a "light" helping of mozzarella on top). I think I'll have to go back for that. Bad happy hour experience. The service, food, and drinks were underwhelming. I visited Tunnicliff's with my wife and several colleagues for a happy hour. Our party included about a dozen folks. We ordered food and several rounds of drinks. The chicken tenders were awful. They seemed like maybe that had been in the freezer for far too long and we didn't even finish the order. Surprisingly, the calamari was okay. Spinach dip was also at least average. Our waiter was withholding of drink specials. We never received happy hour menus and it felt like pulling teeth to get him to acknowledge what was on special. Both mine and my wife's rail drinks had extremely light pours. The lime I squeezed into my whiskey and coke was stronger than the whiskey. We also felt like we were causing the waiter an inconvenience. We did have to reorganize some tables to accommodate everyone, but there was plenty of open space at the bar. Not planning on returning. read more

Not something worthy of the hallowed halls of new york but as a post work, grab a few beers and hang out, spot it does the trick. This restaurant is just okay. Located in the heart of Capital Hill and next to the Eastern Market, I was expecting more. The food was nothing special. I ordered the mac and cheese, which was tasteless. The Irish coffee is way too strong and comes in a non-coffee cup. Weird, but okay. According to some, one of the oldest running eating places in the district, this place certainly has the look and feel of an old pub. My wife had the crab cakes which she said were delicious. My daughter had a pasta dish which she had made vegetarian, and enjoyed it as well. Honestly I can't recall what I had--I guess that's not a great sign, but it wasn't so bad as to be memorable, but also not interesting enough to be remembered. My fiancé and I stopped in just to get a quick bite. Everything was fine until the food came. First problem is that a side of bacon is $3 and it's only three little pieces. The other problem with the bacon is that it was tan. I ate half a strip. It tasted very odd and I ended up having gas for the next 2 hours. I don't think this place cares whether it has a good rating or not. It's been around for a long time and will continue to be patronized as a local spot with decent space to watch a game on their screens while you grab a beer. The food and the service are what drag this place down, though. Both are subpar, mediocre, never really good. Again, I don't think they care, judging by all the recent reviews that are three stars or fewer. In the 11 years I've lived in DC, I've been to this place 1-2 times each year and nothing has changed. It's the perfect spot to go to when you hit Eastern Market on the early side of the day, given its location. I fully believe Eastern Market crowds might be Tunnicliff's only saving grace at this point. read more

A favorite neighborhood spot; our go-to place for late night carry out buffalo wings!

We really wanted to like this place and I really can't hold the managers 100% at fault but a few policy changes would go a long way. My fiancé and I have eaten here once a week for the past five months. The service is on par with the reasonably priced menu. The food is not bad either and the tavern environment is great in upscale Eastern Market. The problem is the influx of poorly behaved children and inattentive parents. The first few times we are in the main dining room and every other table had three or four small children, many wandering around freely annoying other patrons. One evening three boys came in in full rough-house, plowed into our table wrestling, spilling our drinks and one landed in my lap. The next week we decided to stay in the bar and found three unsupervised boys around five years old sitting in the bar area while their parents ate in the dining room. Again roughhousing and spilled drinks ensued with one boy returning to the parents table crying. He was promptly marched back to the bar by his mother and admonished to stay here! Not the venues fault but continuously overlooking this behavior is driving out patrons who prefer not to have to deal with other patrons' children. Unsupervised young children should never be permitted to sit in a bar. Simple suggestion- make the bar area adult only and ask parents to keep their children with them in the dining room. Otherwise a great venue...what a shame! read more

This is definitely the place to go if you need a late night bar. They also have an outdoor smoking section if that's your thing. It's a great spot for people looking to unwind. The atmosphere is chill and there's lots of space. The bar staff is friendly. I wouldn't recommend the late night menu but they do have food until 2 am unlike almost anywhere else. Instead of complying with Facebook's ridiculously obnoxious doppelganger week (seriously girl? you REALLY think someone mistakes you for Vanessa Hudgins? did that same person convince you to a naked photo shoot as well?), I had my own doppelganger moment when I visited Tunnicliff's Tavern and ordered a Starr Hill IPA. Immediately, I was no longer in DC but rather in gorgeous Charlottesville, VA throwing back beers with a bunch of other idiotic dudes, caps on backwards, relishing in my life of gainful opportunity at the expense of everyone around me. Now that I think about it, maybe believing you are Vanessa Hudgins isn't so bad. It might be a better fate than temporarily resembling a UVA frat boy. Doppelgangers aside, Tunnicliff's is a chill place in Eastern Market to have a couple of beers with your friends. A nice, long wooden bar with ample space complements the myriad of tables in this unsuspectingly large building. Like Stoney's in Logan Circle (same group owns that bar), they have a small but interesting rotation of beers. While I would love to tell you that the super grilled cheese is the same as the one at Stoney's, it simply isn't executed the same. There appears to be less butter, less cheese, and less bacon. Having said that, the 2 Pigs in a Blanket appetizer was awesome. Melted swiss cheese is buried deep in bacon wrapped mini-hot dogs all served in potato buns with a generic mustard dipping sauce. I would definitely order that again on a subsequent visit. This is a good weekday spot. So long as you understand that this is not a destination spot, but rather a happy neighborhood bar, then you are most likely going to have a good time. If you don't temporarily have an out-of-character experience as a result of drinking a Charlottesville-based IPA, life is even better. Go here if you are in the Eastern Market and you are looking to hang out with your friends in a comfortable setting for a couple of hours. read more

So... I should first disclose that my visit here came about only after quite some time beforehand at the Yelp event at Sonoma Wine Bar. Let me repeat: WINE bar. Yelp event. Many generous glasses of WINE were consumed by yours truly before I hit up Tunnicliff's. Where I ordered yet another glass of WINE. Needless to say, my memories of this night are less than razor sharp. But I wasn't drunk, mind you, just a little fuzzy around the edges. That being said, I remember yummy burgers, with even yummier fries, and a good group of folks who were willing to accommodate our large, rowdy crowd. It's not fancy, but it's the kind of spot every neighborhood needs. If this were in my neighborhood, I'd visit often. Sometimes fuzzy, sometimes not. I suspect they're consistent in their goodness.
