Cozy spot. Definitely a nice place to meet up with friends or a casual date. Several big plasmas were showing baseball games (not too loud) and apparently there's drink specials during Nationals home games. There's also late night specials (11pm - 1am), which helps for people like me who's happy hour is closer to 9 than 5. Sam Adams drops to $3 instead of $5, and a host of foods drop in price significantly. Speaking of the food, I got the black and bleu burger. Very good, with a roll that held everything together, yet was soft and tasty. Plenty of bleu cheese, no holding back there. Fries were good. Add to all this an outdoor patio for those sunny days, or warmer nights and you've got a relaxed place to grab a bite and a pint. (I am, like so many others, completely heartbroken about Eastern Market.) I was just at Tunnicliff's the day before the fire. I had been there several times before.... brunch at Tunnicliff's was a great way to start at day at the market. I particularly enjoy the crab omelet. Rich - plenty of crab and hollandaise sauce. The omelets are big - on my last visit my girlfriend and I split the Mediterranean omelet. Unless you into wildly weird bloody mary's, don't order theirs. It seems to me that the bartender got a little too experimental. (There's a strange aftertaste of jasmine?) I had to send mine back, it was just "yech!" This was a great place to have the Yelp Elite after-party. The wait staff was really patient with us as we rolled in with quite a few more people than we told them in the beginning. They did an excellent job gaging when to come and check in for new beer and food. They knew not to hover over us and just let us be (you know you don't like that server that constantly interrupts all of your conversations with the fifteen people at your table). They had a mean, spicy buffalo chicken sandwich that I truly enjoyed. The whole meal was thoroughly delectable. The beer selection was pretty good and they had some nice late night specials. DC makes me want to die. In all sorts of bad ways and Tunnicliff's just added to that long death list. Was at Eastern Market craving some pub style food and parents said they had tried Tunnicliff's before. So, unsuspectingly I took their advice. We were seated in the way back at a table that wreaked of cleaning disinfectant. At that point I said in my head "this place already lost half a Yelp star." I'm such a bitch. 5 minutes go by and no one has given us menus or offered to take our drink requests. This place was full of bus boys but no waiters or waitresses. WTF. I marched over to the pre pubescent crowd of waiters milling about by the bar and relayed my frustration. Another few minutes later a waitress came by to take our orders. Now, the food was surprisingly good. I had the turkey melt and split the pigs in the blanket with dad. Not too bad. The bathrooms smell like a barn and the clientele was boring. I've always liked this place for weekend brunch. The eggs are tasty, the pancakes are really good, and its usually not too crowded. However . . . . there are 2 things that are really annoying me about Tunnicliffs and I refuse to go there now because of them. 1. Smoking on the patio. Seriously? It's not like this is Virginia or North Carolina. End the patio smoking; and 2. The loud music on the weekends. What's up with that? Why subject your patrons, and now people outside walking on the street, to loud music at 10:30 AM? I can live with one, but not both. read more

Upon arriving in DC this summer, my landlady provided me with a list of places that she thought worthwhile to visit in the area. Besides the usual tourist sites and general information about the metro, she had included a list of restaurants - Tunnicliff's was one of them, and she claims they have the best burger in the city. While I'm no burger connoisseur (sushi and cupcakes, only) I can't say she was completely off the mark. I've only been to Tunnicliff's on weekday nights and Sunday afternoons - not exactly high times for a tavern, however business has always been brisk when I've been and the waitstaff is attentive and food is served rather quickly. Both times I've been I've had a burger of some variation - mushroom and cheese, or cheese burger - both run about $10-11 and include a side of fries. They've always come as I order them (medium-rare) and seem to hit the spot. I've never actually had a beer at Tunnicliff's, which is kind of absurd, but I was a little miffed at their general lack of happy hour or specials in general. At best they have specials (cheaper beer) on days of baseball games, and have a smaller late night menu (11pm-close) that seems more reasonable in price ($5 burgers and other things) - I keep meaning to come by at the end of a night out but so far haven't made it. Ultimately, a place I'd recommend for a meal on the relatively quick, perhaps to grab beer after work when you want to avoid massive crowding and noise. read more

Oh, Tunni's, why haven't I reviewed you yet? I've been going here for years, since I first moved to the Hill (back before there were brunch spots on H St...). Tunni's is a Hill staple, and always a great bet for HH or brunch. There isn't anything particularly special about this place- it's not the best of the best, but sometimes you just want brunch, and to sit outside in the winter (heated patio FTW!), and to not be surrounded by obnoxious Virginians who come to DC for brunch... This is the place to be when you want to have brunch before shopping in Eastern Market. I always get the Poached Eggs over Crab Cakes on English Muffins. Now that I'm in Berkeley ... I day dream about those oh so thick Crab Cakes and perfectly Poached Eggs * sigh *. They make a mean Bloody Mary too, a nice way to start up the day and end it wondering why you bought such useless items from the market. This isn't the best place to bring kids since there is a bar up front and it is DC so smoke travels nicely to the back. Went in there for a glass of ice cold beer. The host was very nice and friendly, we told him we wanted to sit at the bar. The bartender was busy researching a recipe for Chase Lounge? He was not paying attention to us, he apologized for that. I ordered a Stella and my friend a Starhill, the bartender gave us both Starhill. It was a beautiful crisp fall day and I was meeting a friend for brunch. We decided to give Tunnicliff's a try since we were in the area and had heard good things. I must say, I don't get it. Thank goodness we sat outside, but even then loud pop/rap/dance music surged through the brick wall. No one wants to hear Ridin' Dirty before noon on a Sunday. No one. I ordered the Western omelet after asking the server what he preferred. My college cafeteria had better omelets, hands down. The egg was rubbery, the contents were sub par, and there was no seasoning. With a little help from my friends salt, pepper and Heinz 57, I made it through the meal (barely). I agree with the other reviewers, this is an okay place to go if you are in the neighborhood. I used to live about a block away from Tunnicliff's, so I would go there with my roommate if we just couldn't face cooking dinner. They have generally decent sandwiches, but the service was always a little spotty. On several different times some of our orders were messed up, or the check was wrong, or they forgot our table existed...but I still kept coming back because hey, it was food and it was close to my house. Sundays are generally packed around brunch time, but since the other option is the overpriced craphole called Bread and Chocolate, I would wait in line. The omelets are very big and pretty good. I have always wondered about the peanut butter and jelly pizza that is on the menu. Anyone ever tried this? I think it sounds absolutely horrible! If you ever feel like you need a meal that's delicious and will put you right to sleep, go to Tunnicliff's and order a beer and the Chipotle Pesto Penne pasta with steak. It will taste wonderfully rich, hearty, and yummy and afterwards you'll likely need assistance to exit the edifice. I've been going to Tunnicliff's for about 6 years. It's a block or so from my apartment. The pizzas are great, they've recently upped the number of beers on tap, and their weekend brunch is nothing to sniff at. Great burgers and sandwiches and a pretty stellar draft selection as well. I had the chicken melt and it was FANTASTIC! Warm, melty, fresh and never got soggy as oh so many melts tend to do. The chicken was fresh of the bone good and you could tell that all was fresh including the fresh thick hunks of melting cheddar cheese. The fries too were a thing of beauty and perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. I washed my meal down with a tasty and hoppy IPA (the name is alluding me right now) and it was well worth the $20 for what I would normally consider an overpriced and mundane DC meal. I was out in DC for business. It was late and this pub is just around the corner from our office. I was walking down the street I mobile yelped and it came back with some good reviews so we headed in. My colleague had the black and bleu burger, which he thought was great. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and fell in love. It was spicy, it was huge and it was juicy. I cannot wait until my next trip out to DC...just to get another one of these bad boys. A RELIABLE NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITE. FOOD: Lots of great standards well-prepared and reasonably priced. Particular favorites include the black and bleu burger (substitute mashed potatoes for the fries - delicious!), spinach salad, and brie cheese fruit plate. Brunch is also wonderful. The eggs Benedict dishes are always tasty (bonus - they are all priced the same, even if you get eggs Benedict with crab meat or smoked salmon instead of traditional ham), as is the corned beef hash. Even the coffee is great! (The only misstep on the entire menu is the peanut butter and jelly "pizza," and I'm not sure they even offer it anymore). STAFF: Consistently prompt, friendly, and responsive service AMBIENCE: Relaxed atmosphere with great outdoor seating options that offer fun people-watching opportunities. Staff is also laid-back about letting you sit wherever you want (e.g., they don't mind if a two-person party sits at a four-person table). DC Trip: Chapter two. Waking up after a night of extreme margarita inhalation (see chapter one) is never easy, but somehow, coffee and the Post always make me ready for the day ahead. My friend had some errands to run in the nieghborhood, and I was happy to tag along and explore. Welp, the combination of walking a lot after being hungover left us in need of a good burger and many cokes. There was a rendezvous planned later around Eastern Market, so Tunnicliff's fit the bill. Burgers were meh. I got the Tunnicliff Burger that had some sort of special sauce on it (um, tomato-pickle relish), and my adventurous friend got the Texas Burger. Really, food was a solid three stars. Our server was good (and kinda cute). We had some fun guessing where her accent was from, and in the end settled on Poland (I think) before our friends showed up and we went to the Spy Museum. read more

Tunnicliff's is a good neighborhood restaurant and bar that we tend to overlook for some reason, given that we generally like it when we go. Here's the rundown: Cost - Compared to Boxcar right next door, Tunnicliff's is a bit cheaper and I don't think it loses anything in quality. There's also less of a wait at Tunnicliff's, which is nice. Service - We've had minor issues with the service, but everything was fine today and we've never had any major problems. They're very accommodating with where you want to sit - in the bar with high-top tables, the restaurant area with regular tables and booths, or outside on the patio. Everyone is friendly and they do a pretty good job refilling drinks, addressing issues, etc. Food - Admittedly, the food at Tunnicliff's isn't very unique. But...it's a bar and it does a good job at what it offers. For brunch today, my boyfriend and I split two eggs with side of meat and hash browns (about $9) and chocolate chip pancakes (about $8). The scrambled eggs were cooked well (not overdone like most) and the breakfast potatoes were tasty (spiced very well). We got fruit instead of the side of meat, which they had no issues substituting. The pancakes were cooked well and had the perfect amount of chocolate chips! In the past we've gotten the margherita pizza ($13), which was a bigger portion size than we were expecting, the lamb gyro ($11), which is unexpectedly good, and Tunnicliff's grilled cheese ($13), which is unique (it includes braised short rib and carmelized onion) but might not be worth ordering again. Tunnicliff's is a good, stable option in Eastern Market that shouldn't be forgotten when you're looking for food options in the area (and don't want to wait in the long lines at some of the other restaurants). read more

I know it is BUSCH LEAGUE to condemn a place after one bad experience, but I'm doing it anyway. I used to hit the Tunny a ton for lunch; I really like the bartenders, most of the staff was always very helpful, but -- I had one of the grossest experiences of my recent life here. And no, it wasn't because I picked up some cougar at the bar after 10 PM (which there'll be plenty of). It was because I was sitting there, relaxing all cool, outside of my school, when I took one little sip of my Iced Tea and said: "What the eff' is this tickling feeling? Is it a piece of pulp from my lemon wedge?" No. No no no. What it was was a gigantic, three-foot long, piece of hair that had gestated at the bottom of my drink all meal, worked its way UP my straw, and was tickling my tongue. And as I proceeded to pull it up the straw, and pull and pull for a solid two minutes until the entire 3 feet of hair was sitting in my hand, my server comes on over and predictably says, "The hell is that?!" "You tell me?" I fire back. "Looks like a hair." "Yeah. It came out of my /iced tea/." "Gross." "Yes." Several minutes later after a quick chat with the boss, my server helpfully returns and says, "I removed the Iced Tea from your bill. Sorry 'bout that mate!" THE ICED TEA?! You just nearly choked me to death with a disgusting three foot long hair that came from the bottom of your giant Iced Tea barrel along with who knows what the hell else and you comp me my $2.25 iced tea? Thanks! I don't feel like vomiting all over my table because I just got myself a free iced tea. Sorry Tunnicliffs, I hate to just rip a restaurant like this after having been there maybe 20 times without incident, but this was too disgusting. I can never go back and I recommend anyone else only go here for a cocktail or beer -- stay clear of the Tea. read more

It is pretty standard pub breakfast. If you're looking for some non-memorable food before or after you wander through the oh-so memorable Eastern Market, it works. What does stand out is how ridiculously loud the TV's are. Granted, football was on, which I am always very distracted by, regardless of company. So if you want to ignore the people you went to eat with and watch Red Zone on a sunday afternoon, come here. A bit of mismatch from the pace and attitude of the market next to it, but still manages just fine. I imagine eating outside would be a more enjoyable experience. read more

I have been coming here for years. The food is solid, even if it's a bit overpriced. I have never had a bad meal here - but something happened this weekend that made me never want to step foot in there again. The customer service SUCKED. It was over 100 degrees out and I had made the hour-long journey from the Franconia Metro stop to meet my family here for brunch. I had my 3 year-old in tow, too - which made me even more excited to just sit down, relax, and order a crisp Bloody Mary (don't worry folks - I said I wasn't driving) and a tall glass of water. I ordered the drinks, but when the waitress came back (we'll call her M) with my drinks a few minutes later and I still needed a minute to decide what to eat, I got a HUGE sigh and eye-roll - BAD SERVICE #1. M asked if my son wanted anything and I said no, I had him covered. I had packed him a sandwich because he is a VERY picky eater and wouldn't eat anything on their menu. M saw this, went to her manager, then came back and said nobody could bring food into Tunacliff's because if he got sick the restaurant would be liable. I didn't understand how THEY could be liable for MY food and when I asked for a little clarification - without any attitude, mind you - and M got defensive and dismissive. THey didn't know if he's allergic or has other food problems. She could have just let him eat his friggin' sandwich, or could have asked me why he wasnt able to eat the food there. - BAD SERVICE #2. Mind you, I really didn't care and let my son finish his sandwich. M told my Aunt she had to "wait a minute" for a few napkins (without even looking at her), but another waiter kindly gave her a handful. - BAD SERVICE #3. Multiple other eye rolls and irritated faces came my way. Bottom line is, M had a table with enough people to automatically put a tip on the bill - at 20%, no less! She knew she could treat us like shit but would still get paid. Yes, it was a very busy day, but the other waiters seemed to be treating their customers with respect - why didn't I deserve the same? read more

If you like this place (or have gotten drunk in it more times than you liked to admit) you simply call this place "Tunni's." Over the years the decor has changed, the food has gotten better (and a bit more frou frou), the prices have been raised (sometimes unjustifiably so), but one thing has stayed the same. This is where you can come to find drunk actors from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, the Maryland suburbs around DC, and even some from Baltimore, bitching about the local live theatre scene. My stars, the gossip you can hear in this joint. If you want to make a quick buck make an investment to buy a local actor a drink, and then listen to all of his/her problems with the politics of the local arts scene. Get their phone numbers and emails, or just their webpage addresses. Then, the next day, contact that person and blackmail him or her with all the information you wrote down (taking notes is important) for twice (maybe more) the amount you used to buy that person drinks. You don't have to do this. It's just an idea I used to suggest to friends who hung out here with me. I even suggested they used it on me a few times. Thankfully they never did. There's plenty of beer on tap, and some "ok" wines served here. The servers are always very nice and professional. And, again, the gossip cannot be beat. read more

The food was satisfying but not great. Not memorable. Half underdone, half crisped hash browns. The Eggs Chesapeake barely had any crab meat (surprise surprise). I live about two blocks from Tunnicliff's, and I've been here three times. once for brunch, once for late night dinner and once for drinks. It has always been ok, but not ever good enough to get me back regularly. The atmosphere itself is actually really friendly, and there tend to be a ton of regulars there. The patio often has people, and is closed in during the winter. It is also the smoking section and so uninhabitable by people like me who can't stand the smell of cigarettes. The smoke actually seeps into the front of the bar section as well so I found I need to sit a good bit away from that. Drinks are not cheap but they are not horribly expensive either. Brunch is just the standard brunch fair. It's relatively cheap for the area, but not particularly cheap either. I would much rather go to Montmartre or something right near bye for a similar price point. For drinks they have an ok beer list, but it tends towards the low end of the spectrum. I generally don't have a ton of stuff that I actually want to drink, but you can get fat tire. I like that they serve food until 1, but the food itself isn't so good. We each had a burger with fries. The bun was too big and a bit stale, the toppings were not worth the extra price and the fries were ho hum. Box car next door is significantly better for food, as is the Tune Inn down the street. I don't hate Tunnicliff's but there is also nothing that draws me into it either. Too bad, because it is really close for me. read more

Bad cocktails make me sad. So do bottled salad dressings. My lunch At Tunnicliff's yesterday featured both. My Margarita was not only very weak, but was made with sickly sweet store-bought Margarita Mix instead of real lime juice. The Asian-esque dressing for my Sesame-crusted Tuna Salad was also way too sweet, and came from a plastic pouch or bottle instead of being freshly house-made. What a sad fall from grace for Tunnicliff's, whose previous owners used to pay attention to details like this. I might be tempted to go back if Tunnicliff's put some effort into hiring a real bartender and creating a good cocktail menu... but I doubt they'll do it. So, if you sit at their long bar, be satisfied with mediocre well drinks, because that's all you'll get. In a cocktail-crazy town like DC, this is a waste of real estate. Sad, but true. read more

I am in search of good brunch spots in town. This is definitely one of them. The Bloody Mary's are great - on the spicy side which I love. We sat outside (and the heaters seemed to do fine) but inside looked cozy as well. I ordered my standard brunch dish of 2 sunny side up eggs, home fries, sausage and toast. The home fries had good flavor, the sausage was tasty and the toast was a nice thick cut of whole grain bread. I ordered wheat toast, but this is all I saw on the plates so I think that its their standard. Its good bread though, and that's a plus. I saw a number of dishes coming out that all looked quite tasty. My friend had eggs Benedict, which did look pretty straightforward. So it's its not a fancy brunch place - you want great, try Mie N Yu in Georgetown for brunch. But this is a good place and the prices are reasonable. ($9 for my plate and $11 for the eggs Benedict). The location is great, right amidst the Eastern Market strip. We had a nice wander afterward. Shops, markets, a few good looking coffee shops. Espresso, mmmm. And, lo and behold a Hot Sauce Emporium (Uncle Brutha's)...who knew there was such a thing as a tasting bar for hot sauces? I'm happy now. read more

I came here about a week ago for brunch at 12:30 with a party of 5. We got seated immediately, which was surprising. Our waiter was clearly stoned, which was OK, but he didn't write anything down, which wasn't. Fortunately, when he forgot to bring us something he generally also forgot to add it to the bill. I had the farmer's omelet, which contains mashed potatoes, bacon, cheddar cheese, and sour cream. Holy shit, that's a great combination. My boyfriend said the bacon was overcooked, which is probably true, but it didn't detract from my omelet experience. I also had half an order of pancakes. They were unspectacular but still tasted like pancakes. All in all, this is one of my favorite mediocre but reliable brunch spots in DC. read more
