Solid brunch spot on Capitol Hill, and better than the average DC brunch option by a meaningful margin. We split the DL's Egg Drop (the bulgogi breakfast sandwich) and the Hatch Green Chili sandwich. Both were well executed. The bulgogi brought some real depth to what could have easily been a gimmick, and the hatch green chili edged it out for me personally. The heat was there without being obnoxious, and everything held together the way a good sandwich should. Friends went with the shrimp and grits and had nothing but good things to say. The team behind this place (Scott Drewno and Danny Lee, also of Anju and ChiKo) knows what they're doing, and it shows. We were seated immediately with a 6 person party, so that was nice. Service was "okay". Our waitress was very friendly. However, when I asked for certain things, she did not disclose up front extra costs. For example, they have a kids' scrambled eggs and toast. Because I asked for the eggs to not be on top of the toast, they served the bread plain. So of course my kids wanted jam. It was $1 for just enough jam for one (maybe two) slices of toast. She didn't tell me this up front, so I found out when the bill came. It's more of an annoyance than anything. I also ordered turkey sausage because it's "healthier". Nowhere on the menu does it mention an upcharge and of course my server did not mention the upcharge. Had I known, I would have made a different choice for the meat. Not disclosing information seems very dishonest and a sly way to squeeze money out of each person. The food itself was pretty good. Just expect to be nickel and dimed for EVERYTHING. No problem though--I landed on the Croque Madame, and let me tell you... yeah, this is the one. Toasted ham sandwich on soft milk bread, covered in a rich fontina mornay and topped with a fried egg? Baby... DELICIOUS. I'd come back for that alone. And as someone who loves fontina, seeing it show up throughout the menu felt very intentional and very correct. Amazing service and amazing food. Allen and Victoria were especially friendly and had a great conversation with my wife and I regarding the many business that have came and went along that 8th Street corridor over the years. The food: we shared the shrimp and grits (the star of show) very hearty and an amazing texture with the perfect mix of cheese. Then around 3:20 our food isn't out yet and another server drops off our check thinking we are waiting to leave. He did later apologize and he was not our waiter, so I don't wanna put him down because he was actually the sweetest ever!!! I was so so excited to try this and came away a little lackluster, I've been following their opening, I'm a huge fan of Danny Lee so was glad to see a breakfast/brunch spot pop up. In true DC fashion, they boast a CRAZY drink and food menu, every inch of that menu is filled to the brim and it's a little overwhelming. We went during the cherry blossom season so there was SO much pollen and we did opt to sit outside. I will say, still thinking about the restrooms of that place grosses me out. It's so filthy. It was really hard to enjoy the space when the bathrooms are that bad. Our server was lovely, a little slow after we got our service but super friendly. We actually ordered the most decent amount of food, I tend to over order, the menu is HEAVY so be prepared but I did love their dishes. There were a large variety of dishes, egg and non-related. I ended up getting the cereal French toast, scotch egg, and lox toast. Everything was lovely and tasted as expected. The French toast was sweet enough, I didn't use any of the syrup. Scotch egg was nice and meaty with a soft yolk--perfection! The lox toast had great flavor, BUT the bread tasted a tad stale. Despite 2 individuals in our party ordering the same dish, one was missing their side and the dishes didn't even look the same. The sandwich I had was dry. While it's a solid and delicious brunch spot (and would be satisfying after a night out), DC has so many great brunch spots to compete with. I ordered all the hits I'd read so much about. The DL's egg drop was a satisfying breakfast sandwich for sure thanks to the flakey, buttery milk bread, tender bulgogi and spicy aioli. I think they could make the sandwich even better by making it a tad smaller and more compact. The cereal killer French toast was a bit underwhelming to be honest (and I'm a sweet over savory breakfast person always). The custard filing was extremely hot and didn't add much to the dish. It was basically a piece of mid French toast with Cinnamon Toast Crunch on it. Do get the breakfast potatoes though, they are seasoned to perfection and topped with the most craveable sauce! I got the dalgona coffee which was just okay for $8, I've had better versions. I would for sure come back if I was in the area but with more managed expectations. read more
