OK, so I'm looking for a spot that's gonna be super delicious but not burnt a hole in my pockets and I don't really wanna sit down. And I drive past this spot I said OK let me try it. I go inside and I decide to get some sort of big breakfast platter... it came with pancakes, eggs I got scrambled with cheese, scrapple, sausage and a side of cheese grits. This is more like a mom and pop type shop, nothing really appealing. I guess they more so let their food do the promoting which is cool, some places don't need a grass wall. The service was basic carryout in the hood type of service. A loud Asian lady with a couple of cooks in the back. And the ambience was just carryout in the hood status. Nothing really special. Now the prices were pretty decent no complaints there, but the food was not great to me, but the grits were really creamy. Even after they had sat for a little while they didn't thicken up. They remained creamy the entire time so I guess that was a plus but I didn't eat them because they didn't taste that good and I would have to do too much seasoning to get them to have any flavor. Dinner: fried whiting was good; collard greens were not bad; mac and cheese was not edible due to unpleasant taste. Pickup service was fine. The portion to price ratio is good. These is something about these DC soul food restaurants. The food carries an odor of wastewater. I assume it's because the water used to cook the food is not filtered. This morning was the first time ordering from this establishment after having heard about it for years. My first issue was to call on the price of an item not listed amongst menu items. The female answering the call was not pleasant at all. Order notes were detailed. However, upon receipt of my order, none of the instructions were followed. I telephoned the establishment around 6 PM later today. The female who answered at this time was very rude and harsh and cut me off and was argumentative I terminated the call. Tony's has always been known for their stewed gizzards. Even had an amazing write up one time in the Washington Post. I myself was a walking bill board advertisement for Tony's. Often making sure patrons did not go into the wrong Tony's which was directly across the street. But, my trip to Tony's this pass Saturday for those famous gizzards was my last time they were hard, dry and chewy I wouldn't even give them to my small dog London. The gravy was sooo thick. Walking to this place was a bit spooky. Looks unappealing outside, okay on the inside. The price of these items are lower than I expected, coming from a local place. The amount of food you get is worth the price. I wish they could season the fries and cheesesteak more. Other than that, the cheesesteak was delicious and not skimped. I'd skip on the fries. Ordered the "monte cristo" and the chicken and waffle. The service was quick. The sandwich was actually French toast and whatever else you wanted served with a container of syrup. Mine had bacon, egg, and cheese. The chicken wings were smallish and the waffle was thick. The food was pretty good. There's no place to sit and I found it similar to a carry out. I've been coming here for years. Always good food and prices were always pretty good to me. Service isn't the best, but avg. Service is better when they are not busy. Not a sit down spot, they have a very small counter maybe 7 feet, but the place is small. Some menu items aren't worth it to me anymore, like the big breakfast. 2 eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage and pancakes. Substitutes are an additional charge. I get turkey bacon and turkeys sausage. That platter after tax is $16.55. I think that's high for a takeout only breakfast spot. I was surprised when they told me the price. No substitutes w/o tax is $13. I think that's okay if you eat pork. I'll stick to regular breakfast platters, breakfast sandwiches and wings and wedges. When you think about breakfast on the go, when I have to go to work it's Tony's. Located in the H street corridor lies this spot. I typically get one of these sandwiches or French toast. Both are decent, you won't get any 4 star Michelin meals, but you'll get a more home style type of breakfast. Even though there's usually a crowd, I call my order in ahead of time and it's done by the time I get there. This is a food counter. There is no interior seating. They make egg sandwiches with white or wheat bread. They are the best egg sandwiches 15 minutes walking distance from my house, so I eat them regularly. Only real issue is they don't police the inside, so no one is sure who's ordering, who's waiting, or who's looking at the menu. They also do not enforce waiting outside so if its crowded, you could be waiting 20 plus minutes to order/get your food.
