***Bar Review Only*** After putting our name on the waitlist at another Barrack's Row establishment, we meandered over to Matchbox to wait it out at the bar. It was around 7:30 on a weekend night, and I was surprised at how it was not crowded at all-at the bar or otherwise. With so many other unique non-chains, I really wouldn't blame others for not choosing to dine here, but I digress. I had a Lagunitas and my boyfriend had a sparkling wine. Service was friendly and prompt. I appreciated us receiving our bill immediately when we asked for it. The tap list is craft-focused and the wine list is a good mix of red, whites, and a couple of sparkling options. I've eaten at other Matchbox locations and wasn't a huge fan, however, I do endorse stopping in at this particular location if you are waiting for a table anywhere along this strip. read more

Been to matchbox on 14th st and at Pentagon City and loved both locations. Matchbox at Easter Market is a disgrace to the matchbox family. I will tell you why! 1. They were out of their famous grilled Salmon-the server told us they are out of Salmon. who says that? 2. We asked for miller light and guess what? They didn't have. She said they have bud light so we had that instead 3. Service was poor and the place is not even crowded 4. We were given incorrect bill twice and we refused to pay. Matchbox (specifically Corran) to the rescue! They are always solid and my go to comfort food on the hill is the ginormous meatball on the appetizer menu. Due to recent surgery I am home bound and ordered through Grubhub. Grubhub forgot part of the order, including the meatball. After waiting/negotiating for hours - during which the grubhub driver refused to go back, then said they would, then DID NOT bother (on top of grubhub not refunding us fully for the missing item or delivery fees) - Corran brought my food as soon as he could get away from his hosting duties. He provided fresh bread and a gift card. I will never use grubhub again- but I will be back to my neighborhood Matchbox! Great customer service! read more

The original destination during a "destination nowhere" trip with 2 gals was Banana Cafe BUT as we looked across the street we saw Matchbox and said screw it, lets give it a shot and boy am I glad we did. We'll start with our waitress Ms. Brittany. She was AWESOME and dealt with my corny Brittany Spears jokes all night. Now lets talk about the drinks. We started with 2 boxcars and a really horrible drink. I'd like to say it was called "'something fruity" but I could be wrong. Either way, if Kip is your bartender, he wont let you order it anyway. After returning aforementioned horrible drink, we moved on to a "Gingersnap" which was so good but very mild. Now onto appetizers: we had the mini trio platter which consisted of 2 pan seared scallops, 2 mini burgers served medium/rare with blue cheese and onion straws and 2 mini crab cakes. Out of everything, this was the ONLY disappointing part of our meal which the manager kindly took off the bill. The other 2 appetizers were the crab and avocado salad (served with crostinis) and the shrimp and grits. In one simple word: AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! The entrees selected were the house made ravioli, spinach salad with seared ahi tuna (served medium/rare) and a pizza half sopresatta & wild mushroom and the other half chicken and pesto. Again all I can say is AMAZING. Every single bite was like a mouth orgasm, each one better than the last. We finished off the night with with 2 more rounds of drinks (lets add in a matchbox punch) and dessert. I had 2 scoops of gelato - passion fruit and coconut. It was so smooth and creamy and overall delicious. Another star of the night was the pecan pie. Now I cannot STAND pecan pie but this deliciously decadent dessert left me panting for more. OH FYI - the little glass on the side is an accompanying bourbon butter sauce, NOT a shot. All in all the experience was absolutely wonderful and I cannot wait to return (which may be this evening!) The context for this dining experience is a long journey that has stretched from the hamlet of New Carrollton to the monuments on the fringes of the National Mall, past The Wharf, to an Uber ride here. It was a journey that tested the bloodties that bind generations, from the blissful reunion to the frustration of hunger. What eatery could measure up to such a challenge? Upon entering on this humid day, we bypassed the tables lining the entrance for the cooler climates of the restaurant's interior. The interior appears massive, various stairs of varying height leading to sections of the restaurant, maybe six in total. The interior is all polished wood, soft lighting, and leather. Service was unimpressive. The waiter demonstrated the ADHD of a millennial, great for chilling with other noncommittal friends, murder on a tip. We finally got our drink orders in, and when it came to food, he vainly tried to upsell us on another pizza. We commented on such when he left with our orders. It was a valiant attempt at that. While my family decided to share a large pie, I went my own way thankfully. The pepperoni pie was unimpressive from the sight as well as grumblings around the table. Match Box has always been a good go to and with this one being so close to my house it makes for great meet ups. Friday night I visit with a friend and almost didn't go because for some reason open-table stated the restaurant had no availability and I didn't want to chance it on a Friday night. I ended up driving by and parking to find the restaurant was basically empty. Walked in and got seated right away........short story, don't believe the reservation app. For dinner we both ordered started out with drinks. I had a gin cocktails but it taste like juice. Family Friday night out in DC and popped into this place for dinner. Offers indoor or outdoor dining. Ordered the double pepperoni brick oven pizza, crispy chicken sandwich with deviled egg spread, and apple pear salad. For drinks we had the Hibiscus Lemon Drop, Strawberry Rose Margarita with sugar rim, and an Irish Coffee. Dessert was freshly made powder donut bites with chocolate and raspberry dips. Everything was delicious! Note: You can get fresh bread as well, but you have to request it (come with 3 dips - garlic, marinara, and pesto)...even the bread was awesome. Service was friendly/exceptional and enjoyed the ambiance. Would certainly go back! Only drawback I noticed was limited parking. However, our situation may have been out of the norm as there was a high profile Marine Corps event occurring at the nearby the Marine Corps Barracks which likely resulted in normally unused street-parking spots to be taken. I've been to Matchbox several times, and with good reason. They produce one of the most amazing brunches in the district. Really. The menu is very strong, but there is one standout in particular - the stuffed French Toast is so amazingly delicious it is almost ineffable. Great service, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Absolutely worth the wait for weekend brunch. My friend took me here for brunch. We shared a large brunch pizza, and i also ordered the Bloody Mary # 9. The brunch pizza came with onion / sausage / smoked gouda / scrambled eggs / pico di gallo / chipotle sour cream It was yummy, but the crust was a bit soggy. I wish it was crisper. Also the bloody mary was supposed to be spicy but tasted pretty water down. Even my friend commented how dilute it looked. Def wasn't one of my fave bloody mary's out there. Although i've had worse. The eats/drinks: Mini Trio (PERFECTLY cooked scallops, yummy little crabcakes, and 2 of the mini burgers - i added cheese) My god, all of it was perfectly cooked, full of flavor (and i tend to be picky) Was almost disappointed at the size of it but it DID say mini and it WAS an appetizer - i was ordering it as my meal and was actually satisfied - not stuffed, but surprisingly satisfied! Also tried the Veggie pizza with pepperoni added, which was also deeelicious. This place is cool, but ironically, I never go for the pizza. There are so many other awesome things on the menu to be limited by just pizza. Every time I go there is something new, so I would encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone; you will NOT be disappointed. Contrary to the snooty vibe given off by this neighborhood, the staff is very unpretentious and they give great service! Treat them nice and tip them well because they definitely work hard to give you what you want! My boyfriend LOVES the mantinis; he's thrilled about the concept (and execution!) of a masculine cocktail. I think the drinks are pretty damn awesome too, but not as great at the desserts.. save room! I like to go during holidays, (Easter, Mothers Day, etc.) when most people are packing the more "conventional" restaurants for brunch, and what not. I liked the ambience, and the restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside, but the food wasn't impressive. The cinnamon rolls were good for splitting, since 6 come in an order. The brunch pizza, huevos rancheros, and grilled chicken sandwich were all standard. The salad I got had salami and chickpeas in it and was pretty good but I don't know if it was a $15 plate. If I came back, I'd try some of their other pizzas. Service was good. The place was packed for brunch, so make reservations, especially if in a group. Quick walk to Eastern market. Parking situation is typical for DC; on weekends, may be best to find parking down the side streets in the residential areas. read more

I hesitated to go in at first; the whole world seemed to be in there. But I have grown to like this Matchbox location over the past couple of years and now enjoy its hubbub. The pizza is--most importantly--pretty darn good. I think theirs is a competitor with 2 Amys and Menomale to a certain extent. Yes, yes, I know, Matchbox is not serving an authentic Neapolitan-style pizza that precisely follows a certification, but, hey, it's right in there. My go-tos: fire and smoke; prosciutto and black mission fig; and matchbox meat. Also, an incredible beef short rib soup is served here as a rotating special, and the dessert menu can offer some decadent indulgences, so don't neglect to check out the non-pizza items. I find the layout encourages a certain jovial atmosphere. As you enter, there is long bar that can accommodate a lot of folks with TVs nicely placed about. If counter-seating is undesirable, there are several dining rooms, on various levels, that can handle all manner of groupings quite easily. Anybody and everybody can be accommodated, and the wait staff is very hospitable. I see young and old in here; both are comfortable in this milieu. This speaks volumes. This place USED to be our favorite spot on 8th street, but something big has changed for the worse! One of our favorite appetizers (muscles) is no longer on the menu so instead we ordered the calamari. The size of the portion was so small that at first we thought it was a joke or mistake. After asking the waitress about it she assured us that it was the real appetizer. Ok fine, we'll never get that again. When picking the main course we decided to keep it safe and ordered our favorite LARGE pizza, half chicken pesto half meatball. When the pizza came out it was noticeably smaller than the LARGE we usually get here and had to ask if she put in for a SMALL by accident. Again the waitress notified us that this was the correct order. WTF is going on here we thought?!? Since we had already questioned the waitress on a couple things we didn't really feel like commenting on the fact the appetizer and main course came out at the EXACT same time. Really?!? To really top it off we were never asked for a refill of our beverages (Manhattan and pineapple crush/fizz?). I used to recommend this place to anyone asking for a place to go in this area, but it has taken a real nose dive. So much so that I don't think we'll be back. Such a shame! read more

After the Run or Dye 5k, my friends and I came here for brunch completely covered in crazy dye. The staff at Matchbox was very kind to us despite our condition. We were quickly seated upstairs and the host was very helpful and attentive. My group and I ordered a round of mimosas to celebrate finishing the 5k and had some yummy cast iron baked cinnamon rolls with homemade cream cheese icing. It was so sweet that I had to take water breaks in between bites because it was so darn good! My husband and I ordered the brunch pizza which was reallyyyyy good! No complaints on this chain's SE location! Came here for brunch without a reservation on a Sunday (at 130!) and surprisingly got the last table on the patio without an issue. Already loving this! Our server was fast, attentive and extremely pleasant. She made sure our drinks were never lacking and that we enjoyed everything we ordered. I had the breakfast pizza with the bloody #6- it was everything I needed to cure my hangover (and a Diet Coke, and aspirin AND all the water). My mom ordered the club sandwich with onion rings. She was pleasantly surprised to see that they season the outside of the rings with a fresh Parmesan dusting, "I can't believe I've never thought of that before!" Were her exact words. Me and my family came here for brunch. I love coming with family because I get to try everyone's dishes. I ordered the banana bread french toast. OMG. This is a meal! The banana bread was perfect. I normally don't like banana anything, but this bread was just a hint and it wasn't over-powering. The bread was thick and moist. It came with little raspberries and banana slices that were caramelized. I would order it again and again. My mother ordered the applewood smoked bacon and eggs. This dish came with 4 eggs and bacon. The salsa or sauce they put on top of the entire skillet is really yummy. It pulls all the flavors together. The service was amazing. Very friendly and inviting. They also had some live music playing, which was really nice especially the day after Christmas. Whenever I come back to VA, I definitely want to come back here. For a beef slider it was good. The meat was well seasoned and cooked perfectly at medium well. The halibut dish my bff ordered was bland. It was my first time trying halibut and it was a bit too "fishy" for me. I ordered a pizza which was half this/ half that. one side was "one of the popular" meatlovers and the other half was Mike's favorite, proschuttio (sp), fig, etc... (reference my photos for description). The first bite of both was like an explosion of flavor to my tastebuds! The fig pepper honey slice was sweet and slightly salty from the ham. The meatlovers tasted to fresh! After the first slice of both though was a bit too much. One was too sweet and the other was too salty. Mike suggested less pepper honey on the fig pizza next time. Would I go back... yes! Probably only to sample the other pizza selections and get the tea-lemonade mixture that tasted like kool-aid lol! My friends were in town visiting for an Anthropology conference. They were exhausted and had to adjust to the time zone change from Pacific Standard to Eastern Standard. We took a Lyft to the Eastern Market area in hopes of finding a restaurant without a long wait time but apparently, this area is popular, not only during weekends , but weekdays too. Fortunately, the host at Matchbox made it her duty to combine 2 tables to accommodate a party of 5. We ordered crab cakes, chicken tenders, and a cheese pizza. All tables were occupied, so we got seats at the bar - fine with me. They still had the brunch menu available, so I ordered the veggie frittata and my friend had a flatbread with salmon. I found that the food took quite some time to arrive, but since the place was busy that was to be expected, I guess. When we finally got our orders, my veggie frittata was disappointing. It tasted pretty bland and uninspiring. I had ordered it mainly because I love goat cheese, but there was very little to be found. My friend on the other hand really enjoyed her salmon flatbread, so maybe it was just an unfortunate order on my part. I left unsatisfied, but I'd be willing to give Matchbox another try to see if I have more luck next time. read more
