The Q Special pizza has grilled marinated chicken, portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, zesty tomato sauce, & mozzarella. This is the 2nd time I have ordered the Q and it was okay but missing something...Cheese was very scarce too. It's strange because I love all the individual elements. I am convinced that if we were told we had to pick one restaurant to enjoy for the rest of our lives, both my Husband and I would pick Matchbox. (and the Chinatown location has been our fave for years)...this one is slightly roomier than Chinatown...certainly the bathroom is bigger with two stalls instead of one for women. but ANY Matchbox is dining out perfection! Sliders...PERFECT...medium, juicy, piled high onions...yum! Pizza perfection! These Matchbox folks are not afraid of flavor! Spicy meatball pizza could easily be simple pizza sauce with a few meatballs, but NO, Matchbox elevates that with roasted garlic and bacon. None of which you actually see, but it's all there, subtly creating pizza perfection. Even simple pepperoni is DOUBLE pepperoni here, and not cheap pepperoni, but really really GOOD pepperoni. sigh...am sadly many miles away at the moment. Service...top notch...we truly love everything about Matchbox...from the hours (open at 10am on the weekends with a full menu AND a brunch menu), to ALL the food, and even the reasonable prices...this would indeed be my drop dead, one and only, if I had to choose just ONE. We were here two years ago for brunch and couldn't wait to come back for brunch again. We were back for Memorial Day, we made reservation and waited outside for them to open at 11am. To our surprise, you can no longer order individual items on their brunch menu. According to our waiter, we must order all you can eat for $31.50 to get any brunch items. Fine, I ordered my special Bloody Mary (extra hot). Not only it wasn't hot at all, it also came without the fire roasted peppers. I asked my waiter and he said I didn't order the special Bloody Mary and if I would like to change that. I said no. Thx. When the check came, I was in fact charged for the special one for $10.50. Matchbox is truly overrated. I visited this location twice, and both times, I felt underwhelmed. The first time, I ordered shrimp and grits, and it was salty. I ate it anyway. On the second occasion, against my intuition, I ordered the shrimp and grits again. I decided to try it again 1) because I love shrimp and grits, 2) because I thought my dish wouldn't be as salty as the first time. Well, the second go-round was just as salty, and I was disappointed. I came at happy hour and they did not honor happy hour prices, but we just wanted to get the hell out of there so we paid regular price. Dinner after the marathon.. After my children ran the DC Rock & Roll Marathon for St. Jude's we wanted somewhere relaxing to eat. My daughter actually recommended this place. Staff was great & service was good. There were 7 of us so we ordered several appetizers: calamari, spinach dip, and sliders. The spinach dip was rich & creamy, the calamari crisp & fresh, and the sliders were great! I had a grilled chicken sandwich for my entree. The sandwich was creative and tasty. We were too full for dessert. I actually would have given this restaurant 4 stars for it's pretty good as a casual spot however.... the restroom cleanliness left a lot to be desired. read more

Disclaimer up front, I'm not a big "brunch" guy and don't eat eggs, so many times places advertise cheap specials that include eggs while I end up paying $12 for medicore pancakes/waffles and a side of bacon with potatoes or grits (ahem, IHOP). Having said that, I enjoyed breakfast here. The cinnamon rolls are tasty and I'd recommend getting them as an appetizer and sharing them with your dining companions as they give you 6 of them. They're tasty without being too heavy/greasy and come with a icing with a slight cream cheese flavor. I also had the waffle with fruit, which was banana, strawberry, and blackberry. It was enjoyable and the fruit gave it flavor without requiring me to douse it in 5 gallons of syrup. My side of bacon was a tasty, crispy, large serving of bacon. My friends and I stopped by Matchbox Sunday around 8pm. We were seated in front by a window (great view of 8th St) and received the BEST SERVICE EVER from Q! He was funny, knowledgeable, helpful, attentive, and he made our experience that much better. We started with a special drink that had vodka and muddled blackberries, it was super refreshing. We also had an assortment of pizzas: Margherita, Banana Pepper and Pepperoni +bacon, and Prosciutto and Fig (try it!). All pizzas were devoured, no one had leftovers. This is my second time at this particular location and though I cannot speak for others...take the time and come to the Capital Hill location because both of my experiences so far have been incredible. This is actually the first Yelp review I have ever taken the time to write. They are featuring a menu from milk & honey which is why I am here. I was in DC visiting 3 weeks ago and me and my mom happened to stop in since another spot had a pretty long wait. We decided to order a few different things and share. I was super happy to hear milk & honey was having a pop up menu because I have heard many of times people mention them. Especially folks I run into that are from the area of the DMV. All the food we received the first time was good but one dish in particular is the reason I wrote this review along with the incredible service from the staff. The Deep Fried Salmon Hash that is on the milk & honey menu is one of the best meals I have had. So we shared the first time and I knew I was coming back to DC 3 weeks later. The day we shared it was on my mind...and every day after until 3 weeks later I get off my flight and in my Uber that brings my right back to matchbox- Capitol Hill. Where I am greeted by Lorna (my server) and have the most incredible experience. So if you leave with anything from this review. Get the Deep Fried Salmon Hash off the milk & honey menu (not sure how long it will be available but I hope forever). ASK FOR LORNA. The meat was high quality, beefy, and juicy. The brioche buns that house the beef were buttery and soft. The tangle of crispy fried onion straws covering the burgers had been dusted with parmesan and parsley. Perfect combination with a nice brew. The pizza was also solid although quite expensive considering the size. The medium thick crust had a nice crunch and chewiness, with just right amount of sauce, sausage, and onion. I've always been a fan of Matchbox! Great food and great ambiance always makes for a great time :) I've been to the Chinatown and Merrifield locations, but last week was the first time I dined at this location. Given that it's close to where I work, we came here for an employee lunch with my coworkers. I ordered the sliders (6), medium, with two of every cheese (gorgonzola, mozzarella, and gouda) and comes with delicious parmesan onion straws-- Highly recommended dish! It's delicious, filling, and great to share. The onion straws are divineee. Although this time they were a bit on the salty side, but it was forgivable given that the tasty sliders came out just right. I also ordered the tuna tartare served with taro chips. It was had a great texture and worked well with the wasabi sauce that it came with. They are especially known for their pizza, all house-made and unique and comes in two sizes (10" and 14"). Prosciutto white pizza (sans olives) is a favorite of mine, but their Matchbox Meat (pepperoni, spicy sausage, crispy bacon) is also a big hit. It's pretty smart (and convenient) having your sister restaurant down the street because then when your original brunch location (Ted's Bulletin) is crazy busy, they can direct you here, where there was no wait at all. There's a more upscale feel here and I was a little worried their price point would be a lot higher than Ted's, but it turned out to be reasonable. I could've ordered everything, but went with the crab cake benedict with bacon, a perfectly poached egg, greens and a side of potatoes all resting on a chipotle hollandaise. I don't think the photo does justice on the size of the crab cake. It was really satisfying. Sometimes on weekends, there's a long wait. Not much you can do about that, but now you know. Matchbox is my fallback pizza place. This is the case for three reasons: 1. The space is nice. I appreciate a nice atmosphere and attractive decor. 2. The beverage list is diverse enough to suit most of my friends and out-of-town visitors (without being overwhelming or too "hipster"). 3. Last, but definitely not least, the Prosciutto and Black Mission Fig. It's one of my favorite pizza (ever) and it's the only one I get nowadays. Plus, I've yet to have a friend not like it too. Googled this spot for some good local flatbread. We walked down from Ford's theater after our tour. The place was pretty dead with only 6 other customers being served inside and a table of 4 outside. We waited 20 mins to be greeted by our server who said he was the only one working that day. We were more than ready to place our orders as we were now starving. We tried taking advantage of their "social hour" food and drink specials but then were notified by the server that those were only available to the patrons seated AT the bar. Not around the bar or anywhere else in the restaurant. Who does this?!? We had children in our party; they can not legally sit at a bar. There was no documentation anywhere of these extremely limited restrictions for their social hour specials. We left and won't be back. read more

This time the bar tender tried to tell me that it was an up charge if I wanted to get a different side. So pretty much she was saying no substitutes. It does not say that on the menu nor it says upcharge. I though. I go to other locations and never heard them say upcharge. I am not going to put the bartender's name just don't come on a Thursday. Great options for different palates and a good variety of cocktails to partake in as well. And for our environmentally conscious friends, they have paper straws. We ordered a customized veggie pizza with cauliflower, bell peppers, onions, and some other things I don't remember. The pizza was pretty cheesy with a thin crust, but my friend pointed out that it was "the fancy type of pizza, not the type you eat on the couch while watching Netflix", and I 100% agree.
