I dined for the 1st time at this restaurant at the suggestion of a Friend. While the food I selected was good, the service was awful, and the representation of the drinks was disingenuous. The bartender was our waitress and we were ignored most of our dinner stay. Also when I asked the price of the cocktail I ordered I was told by 3 AA women one price but yet my bill reflected a $5.00 increase in the price of the cocktail and the ingredients of the cocktail was parcel out on my bill. Who does that?? Service was not attentive, actually we were never asked if we were OK while those around us were asked constantly if they were Ok by our waitress. After we were hit with unexpected pounding rain we had to find a place of refuge. Luckily for us, Matchbox was only a block away. No reservations but we were seated immediately. FOOD: - Spicy Meatball (12 inch) - We were worried that it wouldn't be large enough to share between 2 people but it was. Nice thin crust with huge pieces of meat on top and the right amount of cheese. If you're worried it'll be too spicy, it's not. - 3 sliders - Yum! They let you customize the type of cheese you want on them. The meat is cooked to perfection and they're the perfect item for sharing. They add a load of fried onion strings on top that make a great addition to the burger or for snacking while you're waiting for your other dishes. - Moscow mules - Can't go wrong with these. Even though we were soaked from the rain these babies made us feel so much better. SERVICE: Our server was friendly and quick to bring us anything we needed. We didn't need to wait that long to get our food from the moment we ordered. Overall, it's a great location with tons of seating and a variety of options. All options are great things to share and you won't be disappointed. Literally, within 10 minutes of finishing my food I got sick as a dog. My stomach started bubbling and I was feeling so nauseous. My husband drove to his sisters house (which is only 8 minutes away). Thank good she lives so close because I was not going to make it. I mean, good lord... it was coming from both ends! I'm thinking it was the crab cakes because I was the only one who had it. My husband got the pizza to share with my 1 and 4 year old. No one could eat it because it was spicy! I like spice, so I tried it and it was borderline too spicy for me. I think the server could have told us it had a kick to it eat since the kids were going to eat it. The only saving grace was the calamari. But, it's not worth going there just for that. 8th Street Southeast location by the Navy barracks if it's around happy hour the crowd was pretty light service was decent a food came fast and was to order the matchbox Pizza was actually delicious with a little kick spicy wise because of the hot Italian sausage the six mini burgers were medium well and they were delicious of course they come plain so you will have to add condiments ketchup Mayo. I have been coming to Matchbox since they opened their first location in DC. There were so many good items on the menu, but the mini burgers were a must. I don't know what has happened, but he burgers were dry And flavorless, salads were decent, and the pizza was pretty good. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest and our server was ok. Update: They cared so much that they offered the same stock reply they offer to all negative reviews. There is a reason the restaurant was empty at 6pm on a Saturday. My wife and I made reservations yesterday for 5.30 pm. We showed up at 5.15, and the restaurant was mostly empty, so we asked if we could be seated. The rude/pants down around his posterior host seated us outside as we asked. After 15 minutes of sitting at our table while the restaurant was mostly empty (no waters, drinks, greetings), I walked in to ask if they forgot about us. As I walked in the door to talk to the host, I see servers leaning on the bar chatting with one another. I asked the host if they forgot about us, and the response I received? "You didn't have reservations until 5.30, so what did you expect?" You could tell he was irritated with me. I returned to my seat. Not 1 minute before 5.30 our server finally greeted us. We gave our orders for drinks, appetizers, and meal all at once. 20 minutes later we received our drinks. A mixed drink and a coke. Waiter said bartender was busy sorry about the wait. Same bartender leaning on the bar chatting with wait staff. There were 2 customers sitting at the bar. Around 6 we were given the risotto appetizer (30 minutes after ordering), and the waiter offer to refill my coke. He returned 5 minutes later with an ice cold coke, and proceeded to drop it in my lap. He covered me in soda, and didn't seem too upset about it. We waited for our food for an hour, before finally giving up and leaving. We sat at your empty restaurant for 1 hr and 15 minutes, the recipients of 1 mixed drink, 1 coke, 1 appetizer, and one coke in my lap. I wasn't even checked on by a manager after getting an ice cold coke bath. No one seemed to care. My wife thought the coke in my lap looked intentional. I saw/heard 1 other table of customers complaining about service issues too. This was the worst dining experience of my life. Service was awful. An empty restaurant had a kitchen that was "backed up." Easily the worst restaurant I've ever experienced. They should be ashamed that I paid $34 for an hour plus of waiting with soaked pants and leaving hungry. read more

How much do you love @matchbox369? Well, let's just say between the food and the drinks I could eat here probably more often than I should. I don't think they can do any wrong when it comes to this well-rounded menu that offers something for everyone! I recently went for brunch to find they have a whole new menu. Although they no longer offer the steak and eggs as an entree the manager was accommodating as the menu had just changed. It was exactly what I needed after a fun night out on the town. When not eating brunch here my other favorite go-to dishes are the pepperoni pizza, wings, and the amazing apple and pear salad. I planned to go to this spot some time ago, I herd about the delicious, artisan food being made in there. Well...I went there and found out that the aforementioned is TRUE!! @matchboxdc is the place to be!! Without gassing this place, their food is truly delicious. Let's start with their All Day Brunch...a couple of those items include their signature Hangover Burrito (grilled chicken, cilantro, rice, black beans, and ranchero sauce on a flour tortilla $17), their Monte Cristo Sandwich (bacon, smoked Turkey, scrambled eggs, & strawberry jam between powdered French toast slices served with ample salad $19). They have a started called "The Ginormous Meatball" (a beef, veal, and pork, meatball in a pepperoni sauce, with pecorino Romano cheese served with fire roasted bread $15), that looks and sounds mouthwatering!! So look, they have a colorful menu filled with specialty soups and salads, entree's like Chimichurri Steak Frites (grilled flat ironed Felipe's chimicurri, which is a steak condiment, and garlic fries $31), pizzas, Deserts, craft beers, and mixed drinks. On this day I pre-ordered their 14 inch Fire and Smoke pizza with chipotle purée, basil, Spanish onions, roasted garlic purée, toasted red peppers and smoked Gouda...this joint was FIRE ...literally (spicy) and figuratively. This pizza was good the next day in the microwave...it's that good. Next...I ordered their side brunch potatoes, however, after I went inside their establishment, grabbed the pizza and stapled bag and went home...the bag had a burger in it!?! A well done Bistro Burger (Angus Beef, pickles, tomatoes, Tillamook cheddar, and their Comeback sauce $17) according to the receipt. Well...I was too far to take back, so I indulged. WOW!! I mean look, I can tell they mean well. Everyone was so nice. There's so much potential here. But... They're slow on service no way around it. Probably they can fix that. Went in with four two orders: Steak Frites and Pepperoni Pizza came out right (although the pepperoni was ... meh.) But I ordered the crispy half chicken and got a crispy chicken sandwich. I noticed they'd added a hearty salmon salad and I felt like FINALLY there was an option that was more up my alley. They accommodated me with switching the salad dressing that comes with the salad AND allowing me to add even more toppings to my salad that I saw on other salads on the menu. I obviously tried a piece of everyones pizza and it was still as tasty as I remembered. My biggest critique is the sweetness in our cocktails, the sweetness on my salmon glaze, and then the sweetness in the salad vinaigrette was all a little much. They could cut down the added sweetness in ALL of those items and actually get more bold flavor profiles of spice / heat / sour / tang. Brunch Review: Surprisingly, a great alternative should you find yourself with an hour and a half wait at Ted's on the weekend. In fact, lots of restaurants are pretty busy during brunch in this area, so should you find yourself unsure of your options you can feel confident that Matchbox will deliver. Since the space is rather large, there was no wait an plenty of seating when we rolled up around 11:30am on a Sunday without reservations. Although the brunch menu is limited, there are more than enough traditional (with a twist) breakfast/brunch items to choose from as well as a plethora of options from their all day menu. We ordered the Brunch Pizza which looked a little busy for my taste topped with eggs, sausage, onion, pico de gallo and drizzled with chipotle sour cream. We ordered the smaller of the two sizes which was still more than enough for one person to share, although not as nearly daunting as it looks. The crust is thin and crisp with a marinara base, so it's still very much pizza-like and not as heavy as I anticipated. My mother ordered the Banana Bread French Toast which is much more like a delicious dessert in my opinion but it was plentiful and filling. I don't really have an intense sweet tooth so after a few bites I was more than satisfied, but beware that this will more than satisfy those sweets lovers out there. Mediocre food, even worse service. Was here recently on a not-too-busy Wednesday evening. After we ordered, our server was nowhere to be found - I had to get up to ask another server for plates, napkins, and utensils after the food arrived, then had to ask the host for ketchup, and even had to walk up to the bar to ask for waters for the table. We all wanted refills on our drinks too, but at that point were glad just to flag down our server to ask for the bill. Having only experienced the Chinatown location in the past, we can both agree that this newer location is as close to perfect as a restaurant can get. (and the Chinatown location has been our fave for years)...this one is slightly roomier than Chinatown...certainly the bathroom is bigger with two stalls instead of one for women. but ANY Matchbox is dining out perfection! Sliders...PERFECT...medium, juicy, piled high onions...yum! Pizza perfection! These Matchbox folks are not afraid of flavor! Spicy meatball pizza could easily be simple pizza sauce with a few meatballs, but NO, Matchbox elevates that with roasted garlic and bacon. None of which you actually see, but it's all there, subtly creating pizza perfection. Even simple pepperoni is DOUBLE pepperoni here, and not cheap pepperoni, but really really GOOD pepperoni. sigh...am sadly many miles away at the moment. Service...top notch...we truly love everything about Matchbox...from the hours (open at 10am on the weekends with a full menu AND a brunch menu), to ALL the food, and even the reasonable prices...this would indeed be my drop dead, one and only, if I had to choose just ONE. Matchbox is truly overrated. I visited this location twice, and both times, I felt underwhelmed. The first time, I ordered shrimp and grits, and it was salty. I ate it anyway. On the second occasion, against my intuition, I ordered the shrimp and grits again. I decided to try it again 1) because I love shrimp and grits, 2) because I thought my dish wouldn't be as salty as the first time. Well, the second go-round was just as salty, and I was disappointed. When I found this place, I was overjoyed. First and foremost- something that may concern out of towners who are driving- Parking. It was not a problem at all- I was able to find a spot on 8th Street, without having to drive around in circles, which was great. 8th street has a ton of restaurants and businesses, so parking can definitely be found in the area. The place itself is adorable- we were sat in a booth that overlooked the bar area, which was pretty cool. Our service was decent- it didn't blow me away, but it wasn't bad. We started off with the shrimp & grits as our appetizer. It was delicious- fresh shrimp, tasty grits- we really liked it. I had the black mission fig pizza, after reading countless reviews raving about it. It was really unique and really, really good. I highly recommend it. Everyone else ordered the club sandwich, and they really liked it as well. The sauce was super tasty.
