I had the most bizarre experience here the other night. I have continued to dine at Matchbox throughout the years, it's usually my go-to spot for out of towners that aren't super adventurous eaters and provides some good meal options for everyone. After trying to get a table at another Barracks Row restaurant on a slow Tuesday night, we ended up at Matchbox where we were sat immediately. The restaurant didn't seem overly busy since we were sat right away and the bar looked to be only about half full (we were at a bar high top table). And yet, we waited. We waited so long that the hostess kept coming over asking if our server had been over yet. Nope, not at all - we hadn't seen any server even in the general area. Finally after about 20min, he stopped over and said he'd be right back. Cue another 15 minutes and he's nowhere to be found. Finally, the hostess starts to take our order because we have literally been waiting for over a half hour to even place a drink order. The hostess starts to take our order and then gets pulled over to the hostess stand because that's her actual job, not a server. Server comes back and completes the order. We placed drinks and food all at once since we had ample amount of time to decide. Server disappears afterwards not to be seen again for another lengthy amount of time. We waited probably another 15minutes for our drinks. During this wait, someone (a manager maybe?) randomly brought over some risotto balls. I thought it was a mistake and said we didn't order them. He said they were on the house. That was a nice gesture, but he didn't even tell us who he was, apologize for the wait, nothing. He literally just came over, dropped off the apps, and left. I asked him to check on our drink order since we had been waiting for so long. Finally the drinks arrive and eventually the food. I had ordered shrimp and grits and when they came out, I immediately realized they were the appetizer portion, not the dinner portion I wanted. That was both my fault and the server's - he didn't ask and I didn't clarify, and at that point I wasn't going to ask for it to be fixed because I didn't want to sit there for another hour waiting. Server maybe stopped over one more time to check on us but was basically nonexistent our entire visit. I kept commenting to my dining partners how I have been here so much and have never experienced this before. Our food was fine, but the service was just not good at all. Not sure if he was having an off night or what the deal was, but I will definitely not run back here after that experience. read more

So, we went to experience the brunch that walls just introduced a few weeks ago. This is one of the best brunches for the money!! Me and my brunch beasties have been to several over the past few years! The food, cocktails and service was great!! We had Tiffany as our server and Shameek was the manager on duty. They were both great to work with. I will definitely come back and encourage you all to try it...you won't be disappointed!! read more

First visit to this Matchbox. We stopped in for brunch before a Nats game. The brunch box is a bit pricier than other bottomless brunches, but totally worth it if you can put down the food. We both got it and we failed to get our money's worth. Now we know for next time. Their food is all good, but it's pretty heavy stuff and we hit a wall after only sharing about 6 small plates. As always, the service was friendly, unobtrusive and efficient. It was a great meal to get us into game mode. read more

Was a great place for an impromptu Trump rally prior to the inauguration. Great food also.

Today I ordered 9 mini burgers and a salad for pick up. When I got home, I discovered the staff forgot to include the salad. No big deal, I know mistakes can happen. When I called to get a credit, I was put on hold for 15 minutes and gave up waiting. I have since called back but no one picks up. I simply want a refund for my salad. Matchbox is totally blowing it by making this so hard. I won't be back. read more

First of all I just want to personally thank the manager Kevin and the other manager (I'm sorry I don't remember his name) for their exceptional service yesterday! Three separate times I've ordered pizza from here on uber eats with extra Basil and every single time it was wrong. This last time I had had enough because not only am I paying for the extra Basil but I called after placing my order and asked who ever I spoke to to please MAKE SURE they do not forget the Basil on my order. I gave her my name and everything. She said she would double check and make sure BUT of course my pizza gets delivered and there is NO BASIL! So at this point I am LIVID. I called matchbox and asked to speak to the manager and I explained my frustration with their inability to follow directions correctly especially when I am paying extra for the Basil and how this is the 3rd time this has happened and honestly it's unacceptable. How is no one ever listening or reading orders correctly in the kitchen for such a simple pizza?! Pepperoni pizza with basil!!! He apologized and acknowledged my frustration and explained they have new people in the kitchen and that he would work with them and the people handing off the delivery items to stop and double check the items. He then asked if I was able to pick up a new pizza and I explained my reason for why that wasn't an option. Kevin then asked me to hold on for a few minutes before asking my address. Kevin and the other manager (again my apologizes for not knowing your name) made me a brand new pizza AND DELIVERED in to my house (10 mins away) with a complementary cheese cake! That is excellent customer service. That is how you fix a problem. I went from being frustrated and beyond annoyed with this establishment to thankful and grateful. I appreciate anyone who acknowledges an issues and then does what they need to do to correct it because trust me I am very aware that they did not have to go above and beyond like they did. They already had my money so I genuinely appreciate it. And again Thank you so much! read more

Visited yesterday around 1:30/2pm and sat at the bar after being told the wait for a table was 10mins. Pros: -Amazing bartenders -Decent food for the most part (the pepperoni pizza was good & the pepperoni itself had a little kick, and the mini burgers were tasty, although I'm not a huge fan of onion straws) Cons: -None of the food came out hot, especially the pizza - it was lukewarm -"The Classic" brownie sundae didn't satisfy my chocolate cravings, and frustratingly enough it was my cheat day. The top of the brownie was crunchy but tasted very stale, while the whole of the brownie was indistinguishable from boxed brownie mix. -I ordered the mini burgers without pickles and they came with pickles -Food took longer than normal to come out of the kitchen Overall, all of the problems that occurred stemmed from the food, not the actual establishment or its staff. I think the pizza is decent, but certainly not the best I've ever had. There's so many restaurants in DC and I feel like this one is not very memorable. read more

Rachel was my bartender today she was amazing had great energy, drinks and food were also great! I will definitely be coming back!!

Went for brunch, big mistake. This place is known for pizza and mini burgers. Service - had to ask for silverware and water. Had to stop someone to take my order, then he yelled everything to the person that was supposed to take our order. Then the waiter came over and said I'm not remembering any of that can I get y'all order again. Food - Breakfast potatoes are the only that taste like something. I ordered a pancake, I received a crepe that was supposed to pass as a pancake. Never again. read more

Stopped by here for lunch before going to the nearby museums - and so glad I did! It was super busy, but got sat very quickly and chose a small table outside. Stopped by to get a beer and food before I headed home from my Juneteenth celebrations. Sat at the bar and watched the bartender stack glass. I saw her see me, but she continued stocking glassware. Cool. She finally comes by to get my order, but it was clear she wasn't interested in my needs. But I'm still hungry tho . She disappeared and I'm still waiting here at the end of the bar hoping for food. Obviously, I'm not gonna spend my money here. Still sitting here drinking my beer and she has yet to offer me a menu. read more

Among the worst restaurant experiences I've had. It took nearly 45 minutes to get a Stella and it was flat. The entrees arrived 30 minutes apart. One of us ordered a bean burger and fries. The fries were luke-warn. Thirty minutes later (an hour after it was ordered) the small pizza arrived. It too was nearly cold when it got to the table. I had to go up twice to the bar to check on the drink and food. On top of that, the restaurant was ridiculously loud. I wish there were zero stars. read more

Went here on a laid-back Tuesday evening in the way home from work. Nice bar area and seating. I was only going to have a quick glass of wine but thought I better eat something. I ordered a small pizza. When it came I thought it was a little larger than I could eat but I ate most of it. It was pretty good and I didn't have anything bad to say about it. I really loved the food and ambiance highly recommend and server Rachel made ordering easier by informing us about menu options

Great experience! Love the waitress Rachel so down to earth!I would love for her to be my waitress again!

I'll start with the pros: the server was friendly and the food that we DID receive was good. But that's it. The cons: service was awful. We were there with 4 adults and 3 kids. They have a specialty old fashioned on the menu and two of us ordered a regular old fashioned. We had to explain a few times to the server what it was - the special one with a different syrup. That's it. We said the bartender should know what an old fashioned was. We also ordered a fig and prosciutto pizza, among other items. The drinks took forever to come out but were very good. Our pizza never made it. We were told it got delivered to the wrong table and a new one would be out asap. It never came out. By the end, the others had shared their food and we told her not to worry about the pizza. She said it was on its way out and they'd box it up and not charge us. That never happened. Then we got the bill - $28 per old fashioned. We had ordered two rounds. The special one on the menu was $14. We asked her why it was $28 and she said because it was a double. We never asked for a double. She said she'd talk to her manager and ended up taking the second ones off the bill With 3 kids in tow, we were there for a really long time due to slow service and left with no pizza and not once did the manager come over to apologize. Would not recommend this place again. If you so go, make sure you scan over the bill so you're not ridiculously overcharged. read more

Tucked neatly along Barracks Row, not unlike a match in the titular Matchbox, sits Matchbox. The perfect spot to sit down with friends at the end of a long week. The menu isn't overly creative, but it doesn't need to be. For me, the crispy chicken cobb salad. For her, the full rack of BBQ baby back ribs. Simple, yet well-executed, American food with smooth service, nestled in the heart of Capitol Hill -- now that would put a wooden smile on old George's face. Matchbox isn't going to change the world, but it might just change your night. read more

I'm done with Matchbox for a while. There was an issue with my last three delivery orders. Today I ordered the shrimp and turkey pasta. Look at what I ordered versus what I got. The pasta was blend with very little sauce and I was given breakfast sausage versus what's depicted in the photo on the website. I was starting to order from The Uncaged Chef and now I wish I had. I was given a refund, but that besides the point. Please do better. My order was $62 and I deserve good quality food. read more

Ahh Matchbox...the place we frequent when we want some delicious wood-fired brick oven pizza. My favorite is the Fire and Smoke Pizza which has onions and red peppers on it. The menu list it as "very spicy" but I beg to differ as I load crushed peppers on top of it. Back during my carnivore days I used to get the matchbox meat pizza...which I can still taste...all the meats creating magic in my mouth as I enjoyed every bite...mmmm. Anyway, moving on...the crab cake sandwich (to include the toasty bun it's served on) is also tasty as well as the crab soup. Both crab options though I found myself removing shells which can be annoying, especially when you are really getting down on your food. Back to Pizza...the pepperoni pizza is a star too. Those mini, spicy, circles of joy called pepperoni layered on top of the thin pizza crust ...need I say more? Ok, drinks. The matchbox punch is good...but not always consistent. The sangria (its seasonal) is good...served in a mason jar...I'd prefer a wine glass but meh...does it really matter? Last thing to note...as much as I love their food, I mentally have to prepare for the seating. They have booths, tables and half booth half table style seating...the half and half seems to be the majority, which means I'm sitting within half arms length from the stranger beside me. Ugh...this bothers me because you don't always get good neighbors. That's all I'll say to that because I can truly go on and on about it. Yes, you can ask for a full booth or your "own" table...and you'd be lucky to get one. I digress. read more

Firstly, let me say that this visit was proof that if you're in a good mood to start with, then nothing can change that. My old co-workers and I had a reunion lunch together. We sort of thought it was funny that the (nameless because I don't want trouble for a waitress) waitress needed linguistic help retrieving the word lemon. It was the first source of our quiet giggling. Well we were served two of our three meals and I kept pointing out that we could see the third meal waiting to be picked up. I walked over to the bar and offered to take it over (still laughing). The gentleman politely said he'd have someone bring it over. Meals were finally all there, but no napkins and cutlery. More laughter, no side sweet potato fries because,"Oh yeah, we don't have them". The Bloody Mary that arrived we were calling a Bloody Scary. No frills--olive or whatever drinks usually have, just a small glass of mixed drink for $11!! It was a table of salad, pizza, burgers, fries, etc.. no ketchup. We asked , because we had multiple burgers orders. She brought one tiny metal shot glass with ketchup in it. That's when we lost it and couldn't stop laughing. Then because I knew they served fish n chips, I was sure they had malt vinegar back there somewhere.. I made the mistake of asking, to which the reply was, "No , we don't have that." And there was a clear look of "please stop asking me hard questions " on her face. We stopped asking, but couldn't stop laughing. We didn't undertip because, as stated, we were in a good mood. We couldn't figure out if it was just a bad day or someone had a toot of a bong before work. What I will say is that the food, once served, was absolutely delicious. There was even a walk through New Orleans style horns band which livened up the place. There were so many things done right, that I didn't just give one star, assuming it was more related to our one individual host . If this were the norm then her position would have been in jeopardy--so for now, I'll just assume. Otherwise, it has a feel that is a bit upper middle class youthful folks of all walks needing a trusted place to chat and have nice food--with a flavor that is distinctly Capital Hill vibe, the sort of loud conversation place one has meetups with work colleagues. That aside, I will surmise that as the place has a good formula...they have likely started to not cross their T's and dot their I's and probably started coasting on their reputation. I think that is fair to say. read more

Food and service were both great. Antonio was attentive and efficient. Everyone loved their meals.

I'm usually not a fan of chains, but this place gets a pass from me for it's consistency. I know that with a group everyone will find something they like, and I'll get good service in a casual, relaxed environment. I love love love experimental, fancy, creative dinners... But sometimes you just need straightforward and simple. Perfect for happy hour, after work events, casual dinners, all of it. Especially if you have a fussy eater in your group, this is a good spot. Only docking one star as you won't get anything super creative here that will wow you, but you'll definitely clear your plate. read more

I have been here twice and each time I had a great meal. Matchbox is conveniently located on 8th Street in Capitol Hill, nestled away in the row of restaurants. Each time I've come in, I've been seated promptly and helped quickly. I started with the gigantic meatball and the tomato sauce is excellent and the meatball is always cooked perfectly! I ordered the veggie frittata with egg whites with a side of bacon the last time I came in and it was excellent. Plenty of spinach, an ample amount of cheese and the pesto sauce around the edges was to die for! I wish I would have gotten a side of it. The bacon here is kind of thin, so I'm not sure I would order it again. Prices are fair, service is friendly. I would come back to try their pizza! read more

~ I like matchbox... Always have. But am I satisfied with the food every time I leave there? .. Unfortunately, I'm not. Great atmosphere. Wonderful staff. They redid the menu & it's cute & all. I got chicken fettuccine Alfredo which I didn't like. I think I messed it up by trying to make it Cajun spice instead of going with the original. So I take partial blame wit that. The miso salmon dish. Came out very well. Perfect texture, nice looking plate. Okay, but not that great taste. All in all, I'll still go back, I would prob stick with the pizza tho. Always a nice place. Hope you enjoy. #TeamDiesel4Evaaaa read more

I ordered online on the website.. obvi choose the crab dip and extra bread, and the chose the ribs.. crab dip was absent of the order but not the extra bread.. easy mistake but it wasn't about that it was more about the attitude of the restaurant.. got home.. checked.. extra bread but no crab dip... called no answer.. called again lady picked up.. explained... placed me on hold then hung up.. waited a lil to calm down.. called back.. man answered.. as I was trying to explain he was literally talking while I was talking.. chucked it up to sum bullish excuse and refunded me the crab dip.. no remorse. This place was recommended to me by a couple of locals as a potential eating spot for an evening meal. It's the last night in town, and we decided to give it a try. We had such a fun time! The greeter was exceptional, and our server Chara was quite fun. She recommended a couple of items to try since it was our first visit, and we weren't disappointed. The gigantic meatball was a tasty way to begin the meal. We followed that up with a split pizza...one half Matchbox Meat and the other half Crispy Pork Belly...just to get a sample of flavors since pizza is their specialty. For dessert, we indulged ourselves with the Meyer Lemon Cake which was sinfully good (and what's not to like about macerated strawberries?)! All in all, the rumors were true...Matchbox served up a great dining experience with a very friendly staff that made the evening very enjoyable! read more
